Virtually all hospitals provide ‘rating’ for people without insurance, though. They take a look at income and assets and give discounted or free care based on that. Derick and Jill don’t own a home and their TLC income stream ended before Samuel’s birth. They may well have gotten all thei hospital care for free. if you’re not insured and end up in the hospital, ask to see a social worker or go down to the business office and ask. Them that don’t ask, don’t get. All four of my kids were full term NICU babies. The two who were discharged healthy after a week did not get any additional assistance, but the two who stayed longer - four weeks and two weeks - and had long term medical needs like feeding tubes and oxygen, both qualified for Medicaid. If Sam came home with am apnea monitor and oxygen for night, as some pictures have indicated, then he might have qualified. I hope Joy, like most of the young and unprepared mothers I have known, has an uneventful birth and healthy baby. NICU stays are brutal, even for an older mom like me. By the time my 4th was born, I figured the NICU was a foregone conclusion considering our history, but it still sucked. I often felt like my experiences scared other expectant mom' around me, too. I wonder if Jill's birth stories and possible health problems for her youngest have made Joy and Kendra more fearful of giving birth. 7 Link to comment
GeeGolly February 4, 2018 Share February 4, 2018 I was in my early to mid 20s when I had my kids. They were all delivered by the same obstetrician. I felt great comfort in knowing that when push came to shove (lol) the person helping to bring by kids into the world had good understanding of my body and my baby(s). I can't imagine planning on having no plan at all. I get that emergencies happen, but what the Duggars do is crazy to me. A vanity sonogram is not prenatal care. 23 Link to comment

Full-term NICU babies like Sam usually don't stay long, thus they don't qualify for automatic or secondary medicaid (if you have insurance) unless they have special needs. There are other programs available on a state-by-state basis to help defray NICU costs, but I have no idea what programs Arkansas has. I wonder if Cathy paid it. She is quite the enabler! 3 Link to comment

Most hospitals have financial aid you can apply for. My husband and I had twins who were in the NICU for a month. Eventually, after making it through the application and approval, they wrote off 90% of our bill. And we actually have an income and insurance and stuff like that. 8 Link to comment
bigskygirl February 5, 2018 Share February 5, 2018 (edited) My husband and I have applied for assistance with hospital bills and hospital doctor clinic bills, and we have gotten approved. I hate applying for it, but I needed blood tests, appointments, sleep study test, and other medical tests/procedures done in order to find out what the heck was going on. My husband does have employer insurance, but his deductibles keep going up before the insurance pays on anything. I do find it ironic how the Duggar clan go on and on about people willing to be on assistance, but I bet dollars to donuts they do not mind hospitals writing off their medical bills especially when it comes to having a baby. I guess getting a job and having employer insurance and setting up a payment schedule on what they owe after having a kid because they were not bright enough to get proper medical care during a pregnancy (no I do not mean Jill's medical expert care or the lack there of,) in their mind is not the right thing to do. Yeah, Joy was extremely clear that she wasn't interested in marriage--that and dresses are the only things she expressed an ability for original thought. But I don't think she was acting with Austin--she is too dull and uninspiring to pull that off. I think Jill simply experienced her first crush/lust, Austin wanted to get married and, oh look , a girl he knew well and liked well enough was interested and her father wants to marry her off asap, and they got married before Joy had time to get over it. 11 Link to comment

I agree. We have all said that the Duggars are emotionally delayed in their development. So when Joy said she wasn't interested in a husband, that was like a young girl thinking boys are kinda gross and marriage looked kinda yucky. Then Joy moved into the next phase of development which is she found a "cute boy" and doodled his name all over her books (one of the sisters actually said that) and she got all silly and excited. In Duggar world, this indicates true love and they got married. Joy was around 17-19 when these phases took place. Typically we see this in younger girls, but this is Delayed Duggar Development. 22 Link to comment

GeeGolly February 7, 2018 Share February 7, 2018 I think I'm the only one who thinks these girls put more work into getting married than JB & M did. Other than JB introducing Derick to Jill, I think the getting-to-know-yous and courtships were heavily pursued by the girls. JB kept delaying Jessa & Ben to the point she threatened to elope, and I don't think they had anything to do with any part of Jin & Jer. Tomboys still like relationships and sex. I think for Joy it was a combo of everyone getting married and seeing Austin in a new light. Other than the TV show, I think JB & M would be fine having all their kids unmarried and living at home. But I don't think JB could pull off finding mates for ratings. That would take brains, networking and energy. 10 Link to comment

Barb23 February 8, 2018 Share February 8, 2018 I was skimming over the Forsyth website. On the subject of modesty, it was Austin's father who said "my girls wear dresses" or something similar. This was before Joy so I'm taking " his girls" are his wife & daughter. How possessive & CREEPY. (I would think the women's modesty rules would be discussed by the mom.) Following in his father's footsteps, there's no way Austin will allow Joy to wear anything but the Fundy Frumpwear. I think outdoorsy Joy fit in Austin's marriage plan & the deal was sealed. Like we've said before, Joy did seem happy helping Austin work on the house. But with babies coming non-stop, that won't be happening. While I'm on a roll, I wonder if they've cleaned up the house & taken care of the pile of tools& other stuff esp in the baby's room. Somehow I don't think so. There's nothing like stepping on a nail or splinter taking care of the baby in the middle of the night. 5 Link to comment
