I was confused by what the judges wanted this week too. I thought Blake's dress was weird looking and poorly put together.

And how did the guy who made the short, sparkly number dress squeak by to safe? In fact I actually liked a lot of the designs that got safe.

The right person did go home though, that little Miss Muffett coat and white dress were awful.

I am confused as to how Nina has kept her job at Marie Claire, since she has the most ridiculous ideas about what is "innovative" and "fresh". Blake's dress was laughable compared to Swapnil's and Candace's beautiful creations.

That girl really did need to go home; what she sent down the runway was inexcusable.

Clearly Nina's word was the most important since this was the Marie Claire challenge, and Zac's word that Blake's look was poorly made meant nothing! I just wish they had to shoot it for the magazine exactly as it is -- badly made and all -- so that Nina had to pay for that travesty that was Blake's look that she thought was so wonderful. Ugh.

By the way, Nina, get up off your skinny, old ass and actually look at something up close!

I got...nothing.  Not yet anyway.  The construction on Blake's dress was just so so awful.  Painfully awful.  And that said nothing to me about New York.  Sky diving maybe, but not New York.  Swapnil was totally robbed.

Another designer goes home, and I never really got her name.

Anybody else sick of the Architecture Designer's stuff?  I know I am.  It's getting old.

Blake's poorly sewn tortured parachute won? I don't think this was an especially exciting runway. I found most of clothing to be fairly underwhelming. But just because most of the clothes were ho hum, doesn't mean the judges should up the WTFery and just pick nonsense to create future drama because that's what Blake's win will do. Blake is going to produce something tasteless, hideous, and vomitous next week, someone actually talented will be in danger of going home, and Tim is going use his save.

Hey guys, I'm stuck at work (damn job) and won't get to watch until tomorrow. Who went home?

Also, MOOD!!!!! Finally.

ETA:

Oh, it must have been Gabrielle that went? Was she the one that was partnered with Amanda last week?

The whole concept of this challenge was a mess. We want you to make an outfit inspired by New York city and you must put your own twist on a fashion staple and it should be for the Mary Kay woman (whoever the hell that is.) I laughed out loud when Candace said that her outfit was so Mary Kay. When I think of Mary Kay I automatically think of a tight black faux leather dress.

Anyway, Gabrielle's white dress was a disaster but I was still hoping that Amanda would be sent home.

Just as I was coming around to liking Candace she reminded me why I disliked her so much on the Road to the Runway. When Joseph asked her if she won and she answered not yet I wanted to slap her conceited face. Blake's dress was horrible but I'm glad that he won because the look of confusion on Candace's face was awesome. I figure she seems rich anyway and Blake could use the $5000 more than her. I did like her design though.

She shouldn't have needed to look too closely at Blake's dress to see how bad it was. I could see the puckering on my not-large TV from across the room, and I need new glasses, too. Also, I love Dior's New Look, and to me, his dress did not reference it at all. I heard Zac say something about a wedge going on. Did he mean a wedgie? Because it did remind me of that.

I kind of liked Lindsey's look, so I knew they'd hate it. I would have been more extreme with the coat, though, if I were her and make it longer and more voluminous and swingier. They would probably still have hated it, but if you're going to go for something in a runway show, really go for it. Make it extreme. Of course, you should also have your model take off any jacket she's wearing, too, unless of course the dress is as poorly made as the one that went home.

Something about Amanda is starting to bug me. It's something about the way she shapes her words with her mouth when she talks. It's probably something she's not aware of and can't help, but it still bugs me. Maybe it's the bright lipstick.

I totally agree. It was a huge mess of concepts. Maybe it's just because I'm pushing 40, but to me, Mary Kay reminds me of middle-aged suburban housewives in blazers with extra shoulder pads.

ETA: The end of the episode tells me that Kelly Osbourne is the guest judge next week. My prediction: she very cattily and dramatically tells the contestants that they're being dramatic.

Poor Swapnil, always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Candace's was good too, considering the time frame, and for them to lose to Blake's poorly made mess? Ugh. I knew as soon as they were featuring him during the episode that he would either win or go home. I was just hoping it was go home. He bugs.

Can't say they were wrong about the auf, though. That was terrible.

Blake's dress looked like a black and blue termite - that "design" was idiotic.  It was ugly, terribly made and bizarre. I would have liked either Candace or Swapnil to win.  Whoever made the mini-glitter dress should have gone home for making something so boring and unoriginal.

Yes, that is my perception too!  lol

I only started watching last week, so I don't know the names nor much of the backstory on anyone.  I liked all of the top 3.  Candace seems pretty stuck on herself and sure she would win, which annoyed me.  I really liked Swapnil's dress AND his attitude!!    I just did not want Candace to win because she was so sure of the win.

Yes! A termite is exactly what it looked like. i truly loathe Blake, so I'm probably not being totally objective, but I thought that dress was ridiculous. And he should be embarrassed at how bad the construction was.

I didn't like Candace's look either, though it was well made. I just don't like leather garments that aren't jackets. Swapnil's wasn't exactly innovative (none of the outfits were, really) but it was beautiful, and deserved the win.

Poor Gabrielle. I liked what we saw of her and her work, but she just lost the plot with this challenge.. She deserved to go, sorry to say.

I like Kiernan S. , she tried hard to make the horrible designers feel better lol, very sweet. And she has good taste in her own clothing.

This episode was a mess as far as judging. I am so disgusted by the outcome, I feel sick, lol. Honestly, he makes me sick and I was looking forward to seeing him get ripped for that wreck of a look.

How was Jake's ultra-tacky, garish, worst-Vegas-show-ever-about-a-basketball-team outfit not in the bottom three?  The only thing I can think of is maybe the judges took the "it's New York City" thing to its extreme and figured it looked like something those topless sleazebags or Z-grade knock-off Disney mascots might wear while they're money-begging in Times Square.

That being said, they still did send the right person home tonight.  There really wasn't any suspense, as Gabrielle's outfit had about a million things wrong with it.  If anything, they were nicer about the jacket she made than it deserved.  That look was terrible.

I was hoping they would send Both Amanda and Gabrielle home. Amanda has no creativity or design sense.  She's bumpkin. Although Gabrielle's dress was a horror, she at least showed a glimmer of creativity in the jacket. It would have looked cute with slim ankle-length black pants.  Amanda's wrap dress was worthless.  it seemed G was pushed over the edge by poor execution, yet Blake was excused.

Does anyone else hate that the peplum is back?  Joe's dress was a yawn plus extra low points for the peplum.  It hasn't been gone long enough to come back as fashion (if ever).  There's probably plenty just like that  in the 'dress for success" donation bin.   And Jake's sparkley dress.. How is that inspired with a twist.?  These "yawns' got a pass.  Feel like the judges are getting lazy.

When anything is supposed to be photographed the win is usually something with odd lines despite execution.  I hear Nina.. "Well it's very Edi TOR ial"  .

I liked Candace's dress, but wasn't crazy about the top she put with it.  It looked thick at the shoulders and I didn't like the back of it with the dress..

I also liked Laurie's look a lot...  the longer pencil skirt with the flouncy top.  I thought it was very sophisticated and NYC.

I, too, hated the parachute/hot air balloon dress. I'm mystified as to what it had to do with the NYC skyline. Blake can't go home soon enough to suit me. Maybe then he can learn to tell time on an analog clock. When he masters that, he might want to tackle how to make change with various US coins. Arg. He's not funny! Candace & Swapnil were robbed.

I bet you anything Heidi rated Jake's short, sequined dress a high number. Her face lit up when the model came around the corner. Jake talked about how a "very specific woman" would be daring and wear his dress, and all I could think of was that he was talking about Heidi. She likes the short short skirts that show off her legs. She would've worn it.

It kills me that Blake's look was picked for the win over Swapnil's or Candace's. They were both way better constructed, showed more design talent, and had chic looks to die for.

If I had been drinking something when they announced that win, I would have done the classic spit take, because that call was so VERY WRONG. Blake's dress looked like he tacked a parachute to it. I thought for sure it would be in the bottom, especially after Heidi even called it out for being a parachute and not well made. I understand they want designers to be innovative, I could see them letting him be safe for that, but I can't believe they chose that ugly dress over Candice or Swapnil's creations. Either one of theirs should have won.

My vote was for Candice. I thought her design was unique and had interesting layers -- the top was proper and slightly prim, with a badass dress hidden underneath. I thought it was sexy on the model and I liked the way the lines of the top flowed into the lines on the dress. The only thing that made me laugh about it was Candice saying it was a very "Mary Kay" outfit. Um... not unless Mary Kay is a cosmetologist by day and a dominatrix by night. LOL.

I loved Swapnil in this episode. He kept saying stuff that cracked me up. In the beginning he said something about looking forward to going to Mood... and then he paused and said almost apologetically, "That sounded like a musical." Heeee. And his comment to his model about not wanting to show her butt crack made me laugh: "I don't want to show any crack. Where is your crack?" LOL.

I thought Amanda had a really bad attitude. She kept whining about how people whose designs were sooooo much worse than hers had stayed and she kept ending up in the bottom three, blah blah blah, wah wah wahhh. And then she saw Candice doing something really cool and decided to trash talk her, saying her design was awful. Jealousy, thy name this week is Amanda.

???? Burning questions: how did Blake win? How was Jake safe??

Blake's was just a remake of his first challenge look, except the back was different. I thought he was in the bottom. And Jake's? So he cut out two pieces of fabric and sewed them together. Big deal. Even Amanda and Gabrielle did more than that. I'd rather have seen Laurie's or Medline's in the top instead of Blake's.

I wish Amanda would have gone home. She and Candace had side-by-side talking heads: Amanda was trashing the other designers and whining about being in the bottom while Candace was praising her competitors. I like Candace's positive attitude. She praises others and she refused to pity herself when the judges asked her about being away from her children.

Also Blake needs to get over that "I'm just a cute pwecious widdle boy" simpering fast!

How was Jake's ultra-tacky, garish, worst-Vegas-show-ever-about-a-basketball-team outfit not in the bottom three?

I think because the length, in my opinion, looked great on the model and was just the length and shinyness that Hedi loves. I knew as soon as I saw it that she would love it and then her eyes lit up when it went down the runway. Whatever she scored it I'm thinking was enough to save it. Or what skinwriter said, beating me to it.

So much this. And then when one of the judges said a similar thing about it being "Mary Kay", I was like "What? No it isn't. At all." I thought it looked more like something inspired by a dominatrix, but okay.

And now I'm gonna be weird here and say that my favorite wasn't in the top 3. I liked that cool shirt or jacket that the guy from Atlanta made (I think it was either the second to last or last one shown). I thought that the play with the lie of the pattern was brilliant.

That being said, I didn't have much problem with Blake winning. They thought it was innovative, and so... fine. I didn't think it was as bad as the first dress that won that they thought was innovative - the one where they were praising the "curves and lines" of it and I was thinking "ew" the whole time. The curve above the hip of that one made me think that the dress was showing off the model's flank like she was a choice piece of beef or a prized horse, so to me, at least parachute dress looked sort of cute on the model and didn't remind me of horses or cows.

Besides they didn't show it long, but I think the back of Candace's top had an unfinished hem, so I'm not sure the construction was entirely finished there either. And I may be being influenced by the fact that I don't like Candace much - I agree with grumpypanda, Candace's conceit annoys me - but her design looked a bit tortured to me (pun referencing a dominatrix intended). And I can't imagine how hot it must have been to wear (and I'm "cool blooded") or how potentially chafing? (I don't wear much faux leather, so I might be wrong about that).

Does anyone else hate that the peplum is back?  Joe's dress was a yawn plus extra low points for the peplum.  It hasn't been gone long enough to come back as fashion (if ever).  There's probably plenty just like that  in the 'dress for success" donation bin.

...

When anything is supposed to be photographed the win is usually something with odd lines despite execution.  I hear Nina.. "Well it's very Edi TOR ial"  .

To the first: oh hell yes. I groan whenever one of the designers says that they are going to make one. Even worse when the peplum is high on the waist so that it hangs weirdly and obscures and/or falls oddly over the hip.

To the second: also yes, and in addition unusual color combinations that "pop" I think are also often chosen when the show is considering photo shoots. Sometimes the winning color combinations actually made me go "ew" if I'm remembering correctly.

So Blake maybe accidentally chose a very editorial color combination? In contrast,  I'm not sure how well Candace's or especially Swapnil's black outfits would have photographed since I'm thinking that the details on black outfits often don't photograph as well? And also if I'm remembering correctly, when the challenge includes a photo shoot, the judges rarely if ever choose a mostly black outfit for the win, but I'm also fine with saying that I could be remembering that incorrectly, too.

So when Joe was talking to Tim about getting his material in the "scuba" section of Mood, was he talking about Neoprene?  The very same fabric that oh, almost every designer on every show for the last 5 years has been using?  Especially Elena, the Neoprene queen!  He's an idiot.

And regarding Gabrielle and the serger: she must have been totally unaware that people were sewing knit fabric successfully for years before sergers were invented.  She deserved to go home for that stupidity alone. Idiot.

These people are making me feel stabby.  And not with a pair of Gingher 8 inch professional dressmakers shears, but with a rusty pair of hedge clippers with blunted edges. :(

And I think we all know by now that Sparkly+porno-short+tight = Heidi's favorite

Hi, PR people.  I just dropped in here to make sure there wasn't LSD in my Diet Pepsi while I was watching the show tonight.  Apparently not, and Blake really did win for that slapped-together foolishness.  I was surprised none of the judges thought it looked like what I thought it did--a huge deflated blue scrotal sac tacked on the back of a badly made dress.  I'm relieved to see the reactions here, and that I wasn't hallucinating.  It hardly pays to have skills anymore on this show.

Mary Kay challenge! C'mon designers, talk it up!  "sneak architecture"? Oh, sleek. Heh.

Announcing the MK MC magazine ad, Candice's "Yaaay" is so fake, it just makes me love her more. Also, the list of adjectives in her TH and the fire inside of her are endearing. I like her model's styling, too. *boards Candice love train*

Mood! Swaaaaatch! Fabric choices! Yay! We've *all* been waiting for this moment for a very long time.

Kelly's character (personality) is really growing on me, her crazy does work well for her, but her voice still bugs. The shirt looks cheezy on the mannequin. I like her Mary Kay strategy, but I love her Blake imitation.

Ashley, with the zingers! Love it.

Gabrielle's being ambitious when she draws. She's also getting more camera time than ever before - will she be on the top or the bottom? Yeah, maybe you shouldn't be waiting for Tim, right? If you're the one leaving, I won't be too sad. Seems like it may be your time. I'm all right with it.

I like Lindsey's MO and am interested in how her coat will look.  Red. Need to see it finished, 'cause in the middle it reminds me of little orphan Annie. Also, I say neato, so +500 for that.

Ew, Amanda. Candice-hater. The green fabric she chose was bad. I like what she's wearing in the work room, though. (Not the pink thing in the THs, the long gray dress/top w/the slits). Not crazy about the outfit on the mannequin, either. "Push yourself, friend" made me laugh. On the model fitting, her design looks a little better.

Merline = tasteful MK makeup, nice.

Blake: "Flopping his bait around"? Heh Clock reading. Meh. Ffs, don't give him so much camera time. He's not able to express his design ideas in words, and doesn't have a sketch to back himself up, either. Frustrating. I'm personally baffled as well. Too much side boob. You're describing my life when you talk about Lindsay's design (cats, books - except it's actually dogs). He got one of the best models, & I think it's great that she tried to give her input. [so glad they're switching models each week!]

Eek, Jake's fabric at first look. Eek. I love a good raspberry/hot pink color. But it's sequiny. I'm not feeling optimistic. Oh, no his look is baaad.

Swapnil, I'm not feeling optimistic. Ooooh. I dislike it, sadly.

I don't mind Edmond's desgin, what I see of it in the workroom.

Joseph, I don't care what you're concerned about.

Laurie - "A lot of people were talking to their dress forms". Heh.

Use the accessory wall very carefully, please. Use it cautiously. Use it with great weariness.

RUNWAY:
Yay, Kiernan!! 2 good judges in a row. Sweet, constructive words to the designers on the bottom.

This wasn't a great runway for me.

Blake - it doesn't stand out in a good way. ugly. oompa loompa silhouette.
Kelly - 'wicked high bun'; heh. I like the styling, don't like the shirt.
Joseph - fugly styling, again! between the peplum and the slit, it's too much.
Lindsay - I don't hate it, don't love it.
Ashley - keeps my interest.
Laurie, oh, no, that's not good. one idea too many.
Jake - I actually get what he's doing, but I don't like it.
Amanda - not a bad concept, but looks saggy boobed.
Swapnil - looks better on the runway. don't mind it.
Merline - the coat doesn't work for me.
Gabrielle - yawn.
Candice - I like it with the jacket on.
Edmond - I like it, it has a clear pov and clear elements of design/reference to city.

Blake, Swapnil, Candice. Ew, the only wrong choice won.

Lindsay, Gabrielle - getting reamed. Amanda - "miss muffet meh". LOL. Do you guys forget that Amanda's crazy is the loop dress?! Why are they surprised by Lindsay's look - it's so much like her. The right choice lost.

I gave Edmond extra points for his Annie Lennox reference. Yessssss. She is my queen.

Kelly seemed to be designing for herself. As she described her model walking down the runway (down to the "wicked high bun"), the camera cut to Kelly... and the wicked high bun in her own hair. Mm-hmmm. Okay, then.

LSD would be an improvement over the shitty aspartame replacement they introduced last week.   Diet Pepsi now tastes like original Diet Pepsi if you were to drink it a month after the expiration date.

But that seems to be the way of the world now, embrace crap and call it innovative -- hence Blake's win.

Nothing I saw tonight made me think of New York, so right away I thought the challenge was a bust. I like Kiernan Shipka as a judge, her opinions were informed, & she was nice about it, and Heidi hasn't worn anything that made me say WTF? yet, so that's always good.

As for the clothes, the only outfits I liked were Kelly & Joseph, & I thought Ashley, Laurie, & Candace were OK, everyone else I didn't like.

I especially didn't like Blake's outfit, & I don't understand what the judges are talking about. It was seriously fugly & poorly made, how is it possible that that piece of garbage won? I thought Jake, Swapnil, & Edmond's dresses were all too short, & kept waiting for a model to flash something, & I can't decide if it was the actual outfit or the styling that made me dislike Lindsay's outfit.

Yeah!   Is the fix in?   Blake's skills were pathetic and amateurish.  So, Nina doesn't care about how well Blake's garment is put together, finished, or sewn--but because Gabrielle's dress was so unfinished she's OUT?   I'm happy enough that she went home, but there is NO WAY Blake should have won over Candice. Actually, HE should have gone home.

This was a really strange week of Project Runway. I can't say I remember a time when they've been less clear about what the challenge is and have different interpretations of what the judges wanted and not even have Tim clarify that the designers misunderstood and headed in the wrong direction at the first consultation. It was really unfair that the judges clearly weighed the NY skyline heavier in the design more than anything else when they made it seem like a new take on a classic design was enough initially. I mean, there were quite a few designers that went different directions. I was right with Lauren on her confusion when she went off stage. It was a very, very confusing challenge and evaluation.

I've felt the fix was in the second they put that pink and purple junior prom dress in the top 4 and fronted like it wasn't made of muslin and glitter. And for this challenge, since when does execution get put aside when there are other pieces you love that are well executed? And this from Nina? Smells like Seasons 2 and 4 again to me. Guess we'll see if Blake falls in line enough for them to hand this to him, or if he botches it on the finish line like Daniel V. I would LOVE to be wrong about this.

The judging panel has lost any semblance of credibility now.

For me, that was obliterated after Gretchen's and Anya's wins. I was fully prepared for Blake's WTF victory and came to terms with it shortly after the decision.

The look was similar to what we've seen on the real runways many times. It was a haute couture look and whenever they encourage that, I'm happy, vs. something insultingly mall-girl basic like what Lindsay specializes in (and Gretchen and Anya but with good styling and taste).

I really loved Edmund's look and think it embodied the challenge best. It was an updated blazer-skirt combo that was super sexy, exciting, and sleek. He continues to impress after that disappointing first look.

Blake was one of those lil' boys told how wuvable and cute he is much too often.

Oh and I agree w/ Laurie that she should have been in the top.
