The Bartensen's ad almost made me choke on my cheesecake. Which I was eating because I couldn't get half the items on my grocery list so I thought I'd compensate by buying 3 different kinds of cheesecake because fuck it.

I laughed more during this episode than I've laughed during most of the regular episodes of this season.

I needed more Alex though. Only heard his voice as OJ's neighbor. Perhaps more 'sports' commentary?

SoulCycle was pretty funny. "Robert, like Julia Robert"

Damn it Paul Rudd, why do you look good even in quarantine?

Lol at Dr. Anthony Meow-ci. One of my local shelters had a cat up for adoption this week named Fauci. Hope that helps him get a home sooner!

Who was playing Big Papi’s cousin?

Soulcycle: “I’m hot and religious. Yeah, it’s a trap.” I died at that one!

LOVE Kate and her cat, especially the loud purring picked up by the mic.

Good hair: so glad Pete’s blond is grown out and gone. Bad hair: Colin’s has gotten too long to style properly. Hot hair: Beck’s beard. ROWR!

Michael has gotten Colin so many times with the jokes he’s written for him. It was pretty funny seeing Colin trap him back.

Hello The Solution. Saturday Night Live Was Hilarious Around Two Weeks Ago I Think When They Had John Mulaney ! I Laughed When I Saw That Episode When IT First Came On And Then I Was Going To See The Repeat, But My TV Did Not Work So I Saw This Episode Again On The Internet So I Laughed Both Times ! Also, Kate McKinnon Was NOT On In 1983 ! Robin Duke Was On Then ! Then, They Had Mary Gross And After That They Had Julia Louis Dreyfuss ! Then, They Had Jan Hooks, Victoria Jackson And Nora Dunn ! Then, They Had Molly Shannon, Cherie O'teri And Ana Gasteyer ! Then, They Had Tina Fey, Ratchel  Dratch And Amy Poeler ! Then, They Had Maya Rudolph And Then Vanessa Bayer And Then They Had Kristen Wiig ! Kate McKinnon Came After That Because AT First, She Was Mugging A Lot And I Thought She Was Another Kristen Wigg And I Did Not Like Her And I Wanted Her To Not Come Back ! I Did Not Know How Versatile She Is ! Jody

My verdict: Better than the first. The first at-home episode was good, but it was still a little awkward. This one showed the cast is starting to get used to the new "normal" in some ways, but won't in others. Like Pete said, "It's better with an audience."

As Dr. Fauci, Brad Pitt was perfect. Like Kate McKinnon's Hillary playing "Hallelujah" post the 2016 election Cold Open, Pitt made me laugh one moment and cry the next. I'd even rank it with Alex Baldwin's Trump and Melissa McCarthy's Sean Spicer. Pitt hasn't impressed me this much without taking off his shirt in years.

Pete Davidson & Adam Sandler's "Stuck In the House" was another highlight. Not even Rob Schneider could ruin it. Loved the supermarket sketch way more than the customers love Dasani water, for whatever reason. "Big Dominican Lunch" was not only funny, it made me crave chicken pot pie.

I ❤️ Paul Rudd.

Because it can never be said enough:

"Cocaine's not gonna cut itself."

Thank goodness they ditched the WU laugh track. Overall, a pretty good show. Highlights for me were the supermarket and PornHub commercials and Big Papi. I do love Kate’s cat. Poor guy, I hope he got some treats at least for his trouble. I did keep wondering where Kyle lives. Everyone else seemed to be in a typical New York apartment or house but his looked more like California with big windows and lots of green space. I do think that this format showcases some of the newer cast members’ talents, especially Melissa and Chloe.

Not only was this episode more polished, I think the writing better captured the "moment" so to speak with things like the grocery store skit, the underwear mask, the porn hub commercial...etc.

Pete's song was okay but I think without Adam Sandler's hilarious contribution, it would have been a bit of a dud.

I thought there had initially been a run on bottled water but I guess that backed off?  Still, ways to sell that water killed me "30% less salt" "it's vegetarian now."

I suspect we'll get at least one more episode as a season finale.

Cecily and Bowen did this fun bit (which is basically a sketch in of itself) for SNL's social media. I guess it tells you the amount of complaints the show got for the two of them being MIA in the last episode (Cecily in particular as I don't know if she's missed a show in all her seasons - as it turns out she has been going through a lot though).

Pete also had a brief clip.

There was one political piece that was cut, starring Cecily. It was fine. I actually prefer her political material to Kate's, but Cecily's may be a bit too blunt for the show as this is the second time it's been cut (she had a great Dianne Feinstein pre-tape last season).

My thoughts on the episode:

Cold open - SNL's usual lags means that they missed the Fauci love by a few weeks (now we seem to be more in "Gates/Clinton/you know the rest if you've been in any comment section or on Twitter" territory), but Brad Pitt was in good form and the kind words at the end were nice.

What's Up With That? - Never thought this would return unless it was for Kenan's last show, but it was a perfect idea to bring back for a quarantine format as you can't say, "This wasn't like the others." I have to laugh at Bill Hader still not bothering to make a public appearance even in this. I'm glad Sudeikis returned as it would have felt odd without him. The new twist worked, as did Cecily's...character. Kenan magic as always. Charles Barkley - perfect.

Facetime News - If you hadn't seen the Adam Sandler version then this would seem fresh. I actually kind of like this version better, with the "it's OK to use silly Facetime" end for Kenan. Mikey Day was a solid lead as always, and Ego Nwodim was fine in the straight role.

Song - What was a fine, familiar Pete Davidson jam is a blast with Adam Sandler joining in, and a Rob Schneider cameo (only in 2020 could that happen). Rob was a great cast member so for nostalgia I was glad to see him. For some reason Sandler always fits this era like a glove - I think because his whole tenure was in oversized casts with a very incoherent tone.

Store - Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon and Anna Drezen. I got tired of these during the season, but the lack of physical interaction added a new vibe, and it was the perfect format for namecheck absurdity. The Dasani mentions were amusing.

Big Papi - Never really that into these on Update, but Kenan's charisma shines through more in this format. I don't really know Bad Bunny but he was alright. My favorite part was when they asked how Papi was looking so good and he said he'd gotten shot.

Ooli AirBNB - A character I never thought would recur (is this the first time a deleted sketch has recurred?). I would have trimmed a little, but Chloe Fineman was in good form. She reminded me a lot of Tina Fey (who always had so much life in sketches) in this one.

Hookup - Chris Redd never quite gets the sketches he deserves; this one was a strong exception. Few combine ease with goofiness in a sketch the way he can. Ego/Aidy/Cecily were at their best - Aidy's "cheeks clapped" line was the most fun she's been all season.

Update #1 - Che was right that it's deadly without a studio audience, but I prefer the silent approach to last week. A big step up from last week - Jost in particular seemed much more comfortable. I think my favorite joke was Land of Lakes pipeline.

Update #2 - Pete's routine was really weird without an audience (I laughed when he said as much), but the aimlessness was charming enough. Even via quarantine he and Jost have a good connection.

Soul Cycle - Didn't think this would return (a third appearance no less), but it worked well in this format. Nice to finally see Bowen. Heidi stole this for me with her brain dead character, boasting about how she's too young to get COVID.

OJ - Third Kenan piece of the night, competently performed as always. Some surprisingly vicious digs in there (albeit vicious for 1994 - Norm would have approved), especially the one about having to go back a second time. I wonder if Steven Castillo wrote this.

Mandy - Paul Rudd, looking gorgeous and playing straight man on SNL as always. And he and Heidi are both from Kansas City, so it's a nice tip of the hat to have them together. This was decent enough - the end where he left after she reminded him of the time they kissed was the most amusing for me. Heidi truly does shine in this format compared to live - her awkward characters thrive without the generally confused or quiet audience reaction.

Song - Ah, James Anderson and Cecily Strong, together again. These don't really do much for me, although it was alright. The highlight was Beck Bennett hitting his peak of dirty hotness.

Hub - Pretty obvious, but nothing wrong with that. It was nice to see Melissa get a moment to shine. Mikey Day's son continues to be a scene-stealer - this is his third cameo this season. Maybe he'll be a cast member someday...

Whiskers R We - One of Kate McKinnon's best recurring characters, unseen for a few years now. This was a fun return, making good use of a stripped-back setting and Kate's natural charm. I guiltily laughed when her character said Steak Shack took her small business loan.

Kyle Mooney Song - Works as both an '80s homage and a genuine music video, with great production values no less. Kyle has his moments as a sketch player but he's at his best when he gets to do his own thing, like here.

ONS - Melissa Villasenor finally gets her showcase. And it's a beauty - inventive, fitting her quirkiness to a tee without trying too hard, just the right length. Fun use of stock footage. A great piece. (and what was that song?)

Diary - An old Aidy Bryant standup bit repurposed. Not a criticism - it works here, with Aidy managing to edit down her material and adding a dark ending about losing it in quarantine. A perfect way to the end night, as it's how many are feeling right now.

As for the episode, I sort of preferred the last one as it felt rougher and that meant more experimental material you'd never get on most of the time in modern SNL (like Alex's sports reporter bit and also the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon), but the more streamlined approach was probably the best use of the season 45 cast - the pre-tape format meant a lot of the awkwardness and deadness some of them have in live performance was not there this time, and it was a solid 90 minutes of entertainment. I also liked that they moved further away from politics, other than the cold open, and the topical material was there with some focus on being sick of quarantine. It felt like a very current (by SNL standards) show, overall. I hope we will get at least one more of these as it helped brighten my night and reminded me of just how much I get out of SNL when it lets me.

Ok, why is the NY Dept of Health saying you have to wash up before showing some self love?  I mean I get you'd want to wash Cheetos (any variety of Cheetos) and such off your hands, but from a corona perspective, like why?   And hell, while I'm puzzling things out.....it's not in semen but it's in crap?

Why is Mircoban still running commercials?  I mean, that shit would sell itself....if you could, you know, actually find any.   At this point it's kind of a sick tease.

My take, the  penis urethra and the vagina/urethra  are openings  than  could possibly  allow  C-19  into the body  if you have the virus on your hand(s)

Yeah, this was definitely better, more put-together than the first At Home.

Loved that we got more Kenan and a revival of What's Up With That, which actually worked really well in this format!

Who knew they'd be able to get so many cameos during quarantine??

I thought everything was pretty strong before WU; after that, I think I only laughed at Whiskers R We.

Whiskers R We: Yay! Kate managed to make this work with only using a single cat.

Yes, props to Kate, and the writers/editors.

So do we think they're FedEx-ing wigs/props to the cast?

I liked Cecily's Whitmer impression.  It was very raw, which was probably why it didn't make the show, but it felt like she captured it. And of course she nails the voice. Cecily never gets enough credit for her impressions. My favorite is still her Susan Collins, though.

I was just thinking what luck that Kenan had the "What Up With That" wig in quarantine. Hee.

Didn't notice the first time, but John Mulaney was waving on Pete's zoom during the song.

Still wrapping my brain around mint Pringles. Sadly the pepto bismol oreos I can actually imagine.

I also want to put Ego on the list that really shines in this format.

I know it's been awhile now, but I still miss Leslie. I wonder how she's doing in quarantine. I can picture her yelling at Colin about it. Sigh.

A few days ago I saw that Leslie was mad because some people were talking trash about her, or something - I wish that wasn't the only real updates we had on her, as she was such a bright spark on SNL. I was hoping she might have done a cameo when Eddie Murphy hosted. Hopefully she's doing alright.

You can also see Tan France, Judd Apatow, Annamarie Tendler (John's wife) and Nathan Fillion on his video chat.

Much better, SNL!

Man I never thought they'd actually get Brad Pitt to play Fauci, but he freaking nailed it! And I never thought I'd see What's Up With That again, let alone Pete doing a song with Adam Sandler but they were both hilarious! Adam's girls are so big now!

As a Michigan resident who was beyond fed up with the covidiot protestors, I liked Cecily's Whitmer skit except we don't all sound like we're in Fargo.

Pitt is famously incredibly protective of his public persona. It's why he a oids do live interviews, why he hired writers for his award show speeches, and tends to do limited things where his team can ultimately veto them if it doesn't turn out well, like his Jim Jefferies weatherman bit.

I guess that's a reason he's never hosted SNL. If things go bad. There's nothing he can do to combat it. But I guess this revised format works to that with only one pre-recorded bit to do and introducing Miley.

I really enjoyed this episode. I wanted to say the show was telling on itself but I realise things like "more/shorter sketches and fewer sketches written around a host" won't translate as well to the normal format.

I laughed the hardest at Chloe, Kyle, and Melissa's sketches. I also actually enjoyed Kate's two sketches. Her character work has always been great, her impressions just wear on me. Kenan obviously had a bunch of ideas to get out after focusing on TMNT last week.

I'm really enjoying the "cast members as themselves at home bits," whether it's Pete's songs, Aidy's look inside her life, or Mikey's family

He appeared in the opening sketch when David Spade hosted in the late 90s. David is lying on a couch talking to his therapist who's offscreen. He's talking about the pressures of fame and celebrity and says something like you wouldn't understand and the camera reveals the therapist is played by Brad Pitt!

(Cecily in particular as I don't know if she's missed a show in all her seasons - as it turns out she has been going through a lot though).

OMG, I just read her April 21, 2020 essay in Page Six.  I had no idea.  She just lost her cousin (with whom she was apparently very close) to cancer.  Her new boyfriend has Covid 19 and he's no longer answering her calls, so she's worried about him.  Besides all that, she suffers from depression and is on Wellbutrin.  It was really a sad  essay.  Makes me feel bad for her.  Here's an excerpt:

Quote

“I’m scared about Jack. I’m really scared. He has had a bad fever for a week. He didn’t answer his phone yesterday. I text a doctor friend who suggests a police welfare check. I have had anxiety and depression since high school. I take Wellbutrin. I’ve gone to years of therapy. I take Xanax when needed. This is a really bad time for mental health,” she wrote. “Today I decide the anxiety is worse. I’d rather be depressed. I get really low. I wake up Friday and I turn my phone on airplane mode and I start drinking. I think it’s going to fall apart with Jack now.”

She continued, “I’m upset with him for not understanding why I constantly need to know he’s okay. I’m upset with myself for needing to constantly know he’s okay. I’m upset with friends talking about missing their f–king birthdays. What if Jack dies? What if I die? Owen just d—. I can’t say it or write it.”

Strong, 36, expressed how fear has taken over her life while she’s been in isolation.

“I’m so low and I’m so afraid. I’m afraid of the water coming out of my pipes. I’m afraid of outside. And I am so alone. I’ve never felt so alone,” she said.

ETA:  I see someone posted about this in the cast thread.

Great episode. Brad Pitt playing Fauci was a lot of fun although he was a little too hot. I mean, you couldn't forget that it was Brad Pitt. But a fun cold open.

My favorite sketches were the OJ Tiktok video, Pornhub and Pete Davidsen at home with the Adam Sandler appearance. First of all I follow OJ on twitter (yeah, yeah, don't ask me why) and the sketch really captures all of OJ's tics and mannerisms so well. Only thing it was missing was Kenan going "I'm just saying,"

The pornhub was very funny too. Great parody on ads nowadays. And Pete Davidsen and Adam Sandler at home is one of my favorite kind of SNL sketch: where they just let the cast members be themselves. One has a feeling Adam Sandler didn't really have to do much prep to jump into that song like that.

I also loved Whiskers R We. Just because Kate McKinnon and her cat are awesome.

WU was much better without the laugh track. Although I found the delivery of the lines a bit flat.

No, we don't, but Governor Whitmer does and Cecily nailed it! I stand by That Woman from Michigan, BTW.  Loved most of this episode...mostly Brad Pitt as Dr. Fauci and the supermarket sketch.  Not so much the Whiskers thing (because of Kate's character... NOT the cat) and they could have kept the above-mentioned Whitmer sketch and ditched...anything with Heidi in it (just my unpopular opinion).

Wow.  Maybe you shouldn't watch. They're doing the best they can to try to entertain and amuse people during a pandemic....without a live audience, or costuming or makeup. Kate is I think in her mid-thirties. Most women don't look our best without makeup, and maybe off-set or offstage she doesn't use much.

I wasn't sure if Miley was in her real back yard with a bonfire or if she was in front of a green screen, but it was really funny when the smoke blew to the right and totally obscured her face. So I'm guessing real fire. She can now add being introduced by Brad Pitt to her resume!

I'm going to check for Dasani water if I ever go to the store again.

I can see what you're saying - but I think the laugh track they used for Weekend Update wasn't a good idea on the last show, and I'm curious to see how they approach it this time.

I may have misunderstood (or taken a joke too literally) but I thought the first WU was done literally on zoom, with other cast people/writers/friends of Che and Jost watching and the laughs were literally those people and the sound coming from Che and Jost's laptops, not a prerecorded laugh track. I thought Jost said as much when they started. I liked it better that they had the WU background this time, but kinda preferred the live reactions.

Melissa's sketch did not land for me at all. I loved everything Aidy did tho.

I am really enjoying these episodes, the are getting more creative with what kind of comedy they can do. Loved the grocery store sketch. Aidy and Kate must write these, they are becoming some of my favorites. The one they did about the wedding venue is classic, “I’m gonna slap my daughter in front of your entire family.”

They are also getting some star power, Tom Hanks, Paul Rudd, Brad Pitt. I was wondering before the show who the musical guest could be, and I actually thought Miley Cyrus.

  • Love 2

I actually don't mind excessive cameos in this format, because literally when else are they ever gonna get Brad Pitt on this show? I'm wondering if the positive reception to the first stay-at-home episode they did made people more eager to join in.

I've also really enjoyed all the participation from people's SOs, kids, pets (Kate's cat was the MVP this ep) and Honorary Cast Member Pete's Mom.

That Sopranos wall piece in Pete's house is gorgeous. It could so easily be tacky (and maybe it still kind of is) but I thought it was really cool.

Chloe is a champ, y'all. I hope when they get back into the studio, which will probably be fall at the earliest, they give her more to do. There's something so winsome about her that makes her fun to watch.

I was absolutely cackling at Aidy's journal. She could probably do a live on YouTube or Instagram just reading from them.

As for where everybody is: Melissa and Chloe definitely went back to California, and Kyle looks like he's there too. Cecily is upstate somewhere, Pete's at his mom's on Staten Island...Heidi, Ego, and Kate are the only ones I'm sure are still in their NY apartments.

I wonder if they would continue doing this throughout the summer? The networks are gonna be desperate for new content (especially NBC, who had been banking on the Olympics) and I'm sure any other jobs the cast had committed to in what's usually their off time have been postponed.

  • Love 8

If anything, this episode was proof-positive evidence of how an extremely talented group of video editors and graphic artists can elevate a production.

Don't get me wrong, the cast and writers appear to be more comfortable with the constraints they've been dealt, but that this episode worked as well as it did is all on the production staff.  I just hope Lorne opened up his sizable checkbook and financed the tools required so that the editors and graphics folks could do this at home rather than travel to 30 Rock.

Green-screens are truly a wonder of nature...

This was such a fun ep. I think just about everything worked.

My favorite "sketch" was Whiskers R' We. It felt like Kate was improvising everything. It was funny and charming. Loved the cat names.

I also loved Aidy's bit with the journal. She went all in on turTELS.

I had been spoiled that Brad Pitt was playing Dr Fauci, but that's ok. It was excellent.

Loved seeing What Up With That? Just silly and fun.

Pete's song was good, particularly with what Adam Sandler added to it. Underwear mask made me LOL.

Bartenson's Grocery Store ad was hilarious. Everything they had too much of sounded awful and cracked me up. Impossible Lobster. Peeps soup. GAK!

Big Papi? Yes, please. More silliness. Don't we all need more silliness in our lives?

Loved when Ego said to Chris's ex-convict, "I thought you were doing 600 years."

This is the most I've enjoyed WU in a long long time. I really appreciated the quick cuts from one joke to the next. When I rewatched an old SNL ep (with Jane Curtin and... someone doing WU), I was amazed at how fast the pace was. I think WU would benefit from that. For me the best bit, the one that really made me laugh out loud, was when Colin was talking about the guy wearing only an American flag and a diaper, saying, "We need to reopen thee--grunt--eeeeeeeeconomy."

I always love Soul Cycle. No exception here.

The OJ bit was great.

For me the Paul Rudd bit was the weakest. I think I even liked the L&O thing a little better.

Agreed.  I've watched "What Up With That?" videos on YouTube more times than I care to admit, and I'm pretty sure that was taken from old footage.  As was Bill Hader's Lindsey Buckingham, I believe.  Jason's dancing has always been my favorite part of the skit.

Miley Cyrus singing Pink Floyd was a strange combination.  It worked on some level, but overall it felt weird, especially with that red lighting on Miley.

I kept wondering if those journals in Aidy's segment were real journals from her childhood or if they were made for the skit.  Turtels!

Nice to see Brad Pitt, especially since I had recently seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which I thought was awesome.  That doesn't count as a hosting, does it?  Does it?

I enjoyed the very different kinds of comedy on display here, setting up some interesting contrasts like going from the adorable and sweet (even if a little off-color) Whiskers R We with Kate's palpable love for her cat, to the more abstract, dark bits Kyle and Melissa did toward the end.

I was also amused that, even when doing their parts separately, Kate still seemed to be breaking a little during the grocery store commercial with Aidy.

I agree with all of this. I liked Cecily a lot. She's really good at a lot of different things, and she's not doing the same schtick every time. Plus, if you can't be raw during a pandemic, well... forget it, you're already dead.

The grocery store ad was awesome.  "Boy Scout cookies.  They're wet!"   "Pepto Bismol Oreos!"  (Don't laugh   Given the Oreo abominations they've created it's not that far fetched).

I did a "Hey!" when they said "Wine from Missouri", since that's where I live.

I love "What's Up With That?".

The “What’s Up With That” sketch cracked me up so much for some reason. The goofy graphics, DJ Khaled and Charles Barkley’s confused facial expressions, the dancing, and then when Jason popped out of the corner, I lost it! 🤣🤣🤣

A home tour Beck filmed that didn't air.

This was the perfect way to use Charles Barkley - he fit the absurdity of the whole thing to a tee.

I think the reason the cast is so good at this is they probably all grew up doing skits alone in their room to a pretend audience! It's like the Mothers Day episode with Reese Witherspoon from a few years ago where the cast members moms were on and they showed video from when they were kids and most of it was them already doing skits, performing and singing.

My take, the  penis urethra and the vagina/urethra  are openings  than  could possibly  allow  C-19  into the body  if you have the virus on your hand(s)

I get that,  it makes since.   And I'm taking covid pretty seriously.  But real talk,  my first thought upon waking up is never going to be let me go wash my hands before I deal with my morning wood.

Also unrelated,  I'm glad I'm not alone in my hatred of dasani water.
