Happened upon a USA Today article about decreasing maternal deaths. The article focused on bleeding and high blood pressure and said hospitals who have adopted suggested protocol regarding these complications have reduced further complications and deaths significantly.

The article briefly mentioned older and/or heavier women, saying those factors should mean providers need to up their game and that blaming patients is basically a defense mechanism.

Glad I'm past my birthing years because the article is a bit alarming. It left me even more concerned for the Duggar women and their seemingly haphazard approach to childbirth.

The discussion on maternal mortality in the US reminded me of this article I read some time ago. Very interesting, but also quite alarming and infuriating - not to mention incredibly sad. It broke my heart.

To get back on topic - I like the name they chose. Classic yet not too common (just like my name :D ). I wasn't expecting anything weird or overly religious from those two anyway.

I wonder how the bland, sterile nursery for Felicity will compare to Garrett’s and Giddyup’s?  I’m guessing Garrett’s will be trendy too, but probably with more personality, and Giddyup’s will be the typical wilderness or outdoor theme.

I may have to skim through recordings this season so I can rank and critique them.  Yeah, it’s official.  I have no life.

OMG I love the name Felicity.

Re: Ultrasounds.  I posted more in the Kendra thread (which one is she married to?) But in my first pregnancy I had ultrasounds at 5-, 6-, 8-, 12-, 16-, and 20-weeks.  Every single one was normal (5 weeks didn't show a heartbeat, but that's not abnormal, hence the 6-week one). All showed small fetal growth, but apparently the OB didn't think that was a flag. My integrated screen (serum/blood) was "low risk".  My 24-week ultrasound follow up showed a cleft lip and no nasal bone, so I got sent for a level II ultrasound.  My 25-week showed an extraordinary laundry list of abnormalities (see Kendra thread for list of specialists we were then referred to).  Early ultrasounds completely missed that my son had severe genetic mutations (confirmed by amnio) and was incompatible with life.

With my daughter I got a CVS early on. It showed a fairly rare chromosomal mosacisim, of a trisomy that is incompatible with life when non-mosaic. The amnio confirmed it was confined to the placenta (yay!).  Confined placental mosaicism can cause interuterine growth restrictions though, so I had frequent scans to check for that up until 28 weeks (every 4 weeks) when they decided she was fine.  Those ultrasounds took about half an hour each; her anatomy scan took nearly 90 minutes.

If you check out the US rates of postpartum depression, postpartum PTSD, and incidence of obstetric abuse during birth, you’ll be even more heartbroken. And those numbers are vastly under reported. The situation is not good, esp for women of color.

GiddyUp would have to actually have to house to live in to have a nursery.

Finally a Duggar dad who looks like he's old enough to be a dad. This is a really great picture!

She is the least Duggar-looking spawn since the first of the Smugger children. I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the infant photos of Spurge, Henry, Izzy, Samuel, Garrett (okay, Gideon had the nostrils that made him stand out). Felicity doesn't look like ANY of the other Duggar daughter children and I am fascinated. The Vuolo genes might actually overpower JimBoob DNA.

She is very sweet.

I almost bought that dress for my soon to arrive granddaughter.  It comes with a little sweater.  My daughter-in-law preferred the solid pink that came with a unicorn patterned sweater.  I have a feeling that a lot of little Felicity's clothes are going to look familiar to me.

Is Felicity's dress a Gymboree?  My daughter is 29, but I used to love buying her Gymboree clothes, on sale.

No, it was Carter's.  I admit I have been going a little crazy- my son has forbidden me from buying anything else until Christmas.  But it's my first newborn grandchild- how can I not?

I am very happy for Jeremy and Jinger with the birth of Felicity (and with the fact that she was born in a hospital) but I must admit to taking perverse pleasure in the name they picked for her, seeing as how Jeremy is so anti-Catholic.  Felicity is the name of a saint and martyr in the early church and her name is mentioned in one of the Eucharistic prayers that can be used at mass.  He may think the Catholic religion  is misguided/ evil but he will always have a little bit of  Catholicism in his life.

I love this.

I know most of Jeremy’s extended family is Catholic (or at least culturally Catholic), but I can’t remember if his parents were Catholic in his lifetime. I just have to admit as someone who is non-religious but culturally Catholic (New Orleans Culturally Catholic, which is its own variety of “party” Catholic culture), it gives me all the feels...Because St. Felicity - Well, Jeremy....You know what they say, “Once a Catholic, always a Catholic...”

(It’s a lovely name and an actual name. I hope they don’t try to avoid saints names in the future or anything because so many traditional names are also saints names and all.)

I also LOVE that they used Jinger’s middle name (Nicole) as Felicity’s middle name INSTEAD of going without Felicity Michelle. That’s right, Jinger! You name your baby after you and be the best mama you can be! (I also am just really partial to the name Nicole as a fan of Nicole Kidman. I named my favorite chihuahua Mia Nicole after Mia Farrow & Nicole Kidman. Ha.)

Actually even I noticed it seemed to be Felicity in honor of St. Felicity, I don't think it's really once Catholic, always Catholic. Some as smart and/or as educated as Jeremy probably knows that the early church was the foundations of all Christainity. A lot of fundie Christians and/or evangelicals like stories about the early church. I'm positive they meant the early church martyr Felicitas (Felicity) and not the more recent St. Felicity.

I think the name was chosen in part, because it's pretty, and it will really appeal to most of the fans.

my given first name is Zelma.  (Named for my 2 grandmothers).  Thank you sweet baby Jebus, I have a common middle name and have always been called by that one.  “Zelma” has, however, always been my get-out-of-jail-free card for snarking on other people for weird names.

When we first got married, we went to visit my husband's extended family in Texas.  One of the people we met was his mother's bff, Zelma somebody or other.   And he had an Aunt Thelma, a cousin named Delma and another called Delta.  To this day, I have trouble keeping the names straight.

I really haven't paid much attention to the Duggars recently so I guess I need to go check out the other threads;  I thought I saw them on tv recently but I didn't pause long enough to see if it  was a current episode.  I understand there have been more weddings and births since I watched last.   I like the name Felicity, my daughter had several American Girl dolls including Felicity.   She looks like a beautiful baby and I wish them well.   I also wish them a decent paycheck for him (is he Jeremy,  forget?) and that Jinger gets a cute haircut, and that they have 3-4 children and one or two pets that are treated with respect.   I hope all the children get a decent education, and that they go to Arkansas at most once a year.   A girl can dream.....

My older sister got both of our grandma's names as middle names.  I think my parents were hoping if they had another baby, it would be a boy.

Surprise!  Their next (me) was another girl.  I got a first name of mom's best friend, and a middle name from the bible.  Sorry to say, I've always hated my middle name, and don't disclose it unless I have to.  I had to grow into my first name.  To me, it sounded old-ladyish.

Nicole is a favorite name of mine.  One of my neighbor's daughters is Felicity.  It's a pretty name and I think it goes with their last name.

Do any of the grandkids yet have James, Robert or Michelle for middle names?  I hope they don't and won't.  I don't know what Ma's middle name is.

With each new photo posted, it seems Jeremy is growing into his role as a dad.  He is completely smitten with little Felicity and seems very comfortable with her.  She's a beautiful little girl.

I have my mom's middle name as my middle name, and it's part of my grandfather's name.  She wanted to name me Sarah.  I was almost Sarah Lee.  My dad shot down that idea pretty quick.  He ended up naming me, and while my first name is not made up or wacky, it's not common.  I've only met one other woman with it in my life with it.  It flowed well with my maiden name, but it's a mouthful with my married name.  At least I'm not walking around listening to "nobody does it like Sarah Lee".

I haven't really bought my first grandchild much at all yet (other than some 'Flying Spaghetti Monster" and 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" themed onesies), and she just turned 4 months...I feel kind of terrible about it, but my daughter's nursery closets are busting at the seams from all the gifts and hand-me-downs she got from her friends. She's just discovering that there are things the baby hasn't even worn yet that she can barely squeeze her into because while they were labeled 6 months, they are clearly much smaller in real life.

I figure I'll wait until Fall and the stash of "welcome baby" gifts is running low, then I'll find some cute cooler weather clothes.

To say nothing of all the stuff I find for Christmas! And hopefully I'll also get around to making a couple of the things I was going to knit before she was born...But given that she's grown so much already, those are going to take me much longer than the newborn sizes would have!

Ha! I trained my daughter well....she's 31, but has been a Hitchhiker's Guide fan since she was about 12..

I got the onesies from Cafe Press.

Don't even get me started on my middle name.  My mom had suggested it because she liked it and had a friend at some point with the name and thought it sounded well with the first name they FINALLY agreed on.  My dad was like, hmm, you know, I don't know why but I really, really like that name.  And thus it was chosen.

And then I was born.

And then my mother went to put my birth certificate in the safety deposit box at the bank.  And found my father's divorce papers from his first wife.  Anyone want to guess what her middle name was?  Yup.  My dad accidently named me after his ex-wife and almost got a 2nd ex-wife with that screw up.

Oh my God that is epic!

All I know about my name is that I was named after a popular porn star from the 80's who did underground stuff with my parents. I was supposed to be a Megan...I was not named Megan.

My real name (which is NOT Beckie), is a conglomeration of my mom's middle name with some letters added at the end because she hated her middle name. Needless, to say, I have a first name that is rarely pronounced correctly ( no matter how many times I say it) and hardly ever spelled correctly. So I go by Beckie. :)

Love Felicity's name. I was pleasantly surprised that they chose it, but I think it fits.

I have always disliked my name. It's Polish, and while I don't mind the sound of it with my middle name, spoken/pronounced in Polish, I just don't like the sound of it integrated into English, if that makes any sense. It just sounds too choppy. My middle name is Maria, which, in Polish, would be pronounced like MAR-ya, with a rolled "r", but that's almost impossible to insert if you are saying the rest of my name with your mouth set to English...So I don't try, and it just remains as Ma-REE-uh if anyone ever asks.

I think my mom's first/middle name is really pretty...even though it's also Polish, you can pronounce it in English without losing the basic essence of it; Kamila Halina.

I REALLY hope they named he Felicity because they like the name. If they were thinking of the "fans," that's just too sad and pathetic to contemplate.
