Regarding the ratings for the Emmys, alongside the excellent point that it's hard to keep up if you haven't seen a lot of the shows nominated, there's also the fact that people can pretty much just read the list of the winners online nowadays, and see video clips of whatever highlights or shocking moments took place. Why bother watching an entire awards show when you can just go online the next day and get the condensed version that allows you to focus more specifically on the awards/moments you care about most?

I feel like we are at some sort of crossroads, and I will be left behind pretty soon.  Most of the cable and internet shows I haven’t seen because I don’t like seeing violence porn and many shows now have it because they aren’t tied to broadcast standards.  I don’t want to see gratuitous nudity or graphic rape scenes or all the horrible language that cable/internet shows now use because they can.  I am tired of shows so focused on being shocking and edgy, yet I don’t see it going away anytime soon.  Sigh.

I mean, that was always the case. I think we are at the point where people that dont watch a lot of Emmy nominations garnering shows just skip and a lot of the people that do aren't invested in emmy's.

Most of the people and shows I want win either dont win or dont win when I think they should. See Atlanta which truly amazes me this season after a high quality first season. Shut out. And will honestly never give a damn about Amazon's tv output and Barry did nothing for me so I dont feel like I missed anything.

For those who might’ve missed it, here’s Matthew’s acceptance speech, from the point where the Queer Eye guys are introduced & remind everyone of the nominees then announce the winner, all the way through the end of Matthew’s speech. It was posted by the Television Academy (the group who also posts the Emmy Legends interviews online, if you’ve seen those).

And here is what’s supposed to be Matthew’s full backstage press conference after winning. It only runs 3 minutes, 32 seconds; the video was posted by Variety.

Thanks for the links. I missed the broadcast, and this is the only award presentation I regret not seeing live. I’ve been rooting for The Americans since it’s been on the air. I’m going to miss that show—even its less-than-stellar seasons were better than most shows on TV.

Agreed.

I have to say, my favorite parts of Matthew winning & his speech were his references to getting a son from the experience of being in The Americans (& hoping the little bugger—I guess Sam’s 3[?] now—was asleep); his calling Keri “Keri Lynn(sp?)” & promising more to come, & her adoring (& other) looks in response to Matthew’s comments.

Wait...Colin Firth is in the Mary Poppins remake? Crap. Now I have to see it. Unless Dick van Dyke does the alleged Cockney again; that's a dealbreaker. Have we finished paying the UK reparations for that?

Gwendolyn of GoT is also in a choir.

I think he's playing the son of the other character he played in the original, the old bank manager. To be fair his accent for that character was so good most people didn't know it was him.

Man, the best actress in a drama category was stacked, and since The Americans had won a couple other big ones, I thought maybe Keri Russell had a chance.  But, I basically thought there was a chance anyone could win, except for whatever reason, I thought "Claire Foy is the only one who is not going to win" and then she won!  I don't have anything against her (I just haven't watched The Crown), I just thought it was funny that the one nominee I thought was the one without a chance was the one that won.

I love award shows, so I thought this one was fine.  I think it's a fact of tv today that awards shows just aren't going to garner the viewers they used to.  Also, with teh rise of streaming services producing original content, I wonder when the "movie made for tv" will get hard.  I mean, at what point is a netflix movie a regular movie or a made for tv movie?

Is it only the Oscars where they announce if it is the winner's first win/nomination, or if she/he has had multiples? I thought the Emmys did this, and if they don't they should. Also when the winner was announced often they didn't say once again which show it was for, so unless I knew the show I had no clue. They showed a picture in the background but if the show name was on it as well, it was not visible.

I didn't mind the format of the nominees being named before the presenters, but since the format didn't do away with the insipid banter, it wasn't as big of an improvement as it could have been.

So wonderful to see the extended standing O for Betty White. It is hard to believe that Hot in Cleveland only went off the air 3 years ago as Betty seems to have gone downhill quite a bit. Understandable at 96, but still a bit jarring. When she passes I will feel as I did when Mary Tyler Moore passed - one of a kind and irreplaceable.

I think Betty White is worried she might end up like Florence Henderson did when she died unexpectedly when she was doing all those non-stop guest spots on talk shows, prior to her last ones with Dancing With The Stars while supporting  Maureen McCormick. Betty White is still doing guest spots today on shows, but not as much as she did prior to her stint on Hot In Cleveland. Age does play a factor as to how many times you could work, especially those approaching in their 80s or 90s. I am not saying you can't do it, but you have to have a limit somewhere.

Exactly!  Why sit through an extremely boring show.  I just realized that I mostly watch reno/decorating shows and old sitcoms, so I had no idea who most of the actors were.

I like Anthony Anderson and Blackish (not so much last season with the divorce arc), but man, he needs to develop a poker face. He looked seriously pissed whenever he or the show didn’t win.

Whenever I've heard him interviewed, he seems like he's a real jerk and that clip at the Emmys was really horrible--not funny and he was horrible in it.

I'd guess that she's had some pretty significant health problems in the past few years. Any time I see her make a public appearance lately, she needs to grab onto someone to be able to walk.

Everything I've ever heard about him has given me the impression that he's an insufferable nightmare in real life. And frankly, I'm sick of him playing over-the-top obnoxious loudmouths.

Yeah, he is often my least favorite part of Black-ish.  Even more importantly, he does seem like a nightmare, and he's been accused of sexual assault at least three times, so...there's that.

Barry did nothing for me

Same here! I love Henry Winkler and enjoyed Bill Hader in "Trainwreck," but that was such a clichéd, predictable show. How many times have we seen the gangster-out-of-water story? Oh, bumbling Russian con men are involved? Shocker. Well, I tried with like the first three episodes. What a waste of great actors. If it means HW gets his well-deserved lifetime achievement award, I'll take it, but I'm not watching any more.

The banter was awkward for most people, but the absolute worst was Larry David and Claire Foy (? I think that is who he presented with).

I’ve never seen Curb, but from what I gather is that is Larry’s schtick?  Regardless, it was patently unfunny and uncomfortable. It definitely did not make me want to check out his work.

Yay! to all the nominations for Chernobyl.  It's heartening to see excellent tv rewarded.

Also yay! to the nominations for Gwendoline Christie, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams.  Say what you will about GOT's final season, but all three turned in stellar performances which deserved to be recognized.

And a mini-yay! to Nicolaj Coster-Waldau's nomination.  It wasn't the season for which he truly deserved the nomination (that was Season 3), but the Great Hall scene with Gwendoline in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was insanely good.  I feel like that alone was worthy of the recognition.

Edited to note that I'm thrilled beyond words for Alfie Allen's nomination.

I'm very happy for the Fosse/Verdon nominations. Michelle Williams is in a tough category, but I'd love to see her win.

I'm very disappointed that two of my favorite shows were shut out, though. The second season of The Deuce is really good (perhaps not as good as the first but still head and shoulders above most shows) and it seems to have been shut out again. (Does the academy hate David Simon? He made arguably the best show ever--The Wire--and yet he gets no love.) Same for After Life, a really moving but also funny show by Ricky Gervais.

Bah, humbug.

Not a bad batch this year, very happy to see so many GOT actors (the writing was a hot mess, but the cast was doing amazing work), nods for Chernobyl and Fosse/Verdon, as well as rep from The Good Place and Fleabag. Of course plenty of great shows were left out (B99 where for are thou?!) but as far as Emmy nominations go, its a pretty solid list without a lot of "really?!?" nominations.

David Simon is VERY outspoken.  His Twitter posts rub a lot of people the wrong way, and I would imagine he's much the same in person.

I don't know, but if someone figures it out, maybe Andre Braugher could do it, too.   So disappointing.

Andre Braugher should receive Emmy Awards for individual lines in B99.  He is Da Bomb.

I have yet to see "When They See Us", but given how much I loved Vera Farmiga in "Bates Motel", I'm thrilled to see her getting an Emmy nomination. I'm also pleasantly surprised to see Kumali Nanjiani getting a nomination for "Twilight Zone". Well deserved :). Honestly, there's quite a few actors from that show worthy of a nod.

And I'm happy about the HTGAWM nominations, and John Oliver and Stephen Colbert's nominations as well (not surprised about those last two, mind, but still, yay).

This just in - no big awards for The Handmaid's Tale.  Maybe this'll be a wake up call for a new showrunner.

Striking Vipers should have been nominated.  It's had a better story, better acting, and I could related more to it given it's subject matter.

The Handmaid’s Tale wasn’t eligible for this year’s Emmys since the third season premiered after June 1.

Gotta be honest, I'm looking forward to when they can't be dominated by Game of Thrones. I'm happy for the actors but I hate how a season as awful as S8, according to both fans and critics, can still get all the love because it's just that 'big' of a show and was on its last season. They can get away with mediocrity that others can't and probably got chosen over shows that were more deserving.

Or maybe I'm just angry that the Starbucks cup and water bottles got snubbed.

Otherwise I'm thrilled for Chernobyl and am really pulling for Jared Harris. I'm also happy to see the love for Better Call Saul but I'm surprised at Rhea Seehorn getting left out when the rest of the core cast (not that I'm not happy for them) got recognition. Actually, it's the same surprise I have about Fleabag in that basically everyone except Andrew Scott got nominated.

THIS. I'm starting to get angry about the continued snubbing of Rhea Seehorn. Are they actually watching Saul or are these other actors still coasting off their Breaking Bad reputations? Because if they're watching it, they should have noticed by now how good she is and also how crucial to the show her character has become.

Some fans and some critics.  Plenty of us had no problem with it, although it wasn't the show's best season.

Best Supporting Performance by an Inanimate Object? ;-)  They really need to add that category.  Seriously.

Tonight’s my night! Emmy night! My name is actually Emmy and I’m a TV addict so it all works out! This year I actually had Netflix and Prime so I feel like I have a good grasp on all the nominees and have seen or at least heard of most of these shows. I’ll be flipping between this and football tonight when the speeches get too political or boring 🙂
