I was a regular reader of Celebritology back when it existed (RIP, sniff, sniff).   Britney was covered on the regular, until she went into full on meltdown.   Then it was deemed cruel to cover her mental health issues in a fluff column where we (gently) snarked on celebs.

I think especially when it came to Janet Jackson, Les Moonves is CLEARLY the villain. But I don't think it's too much to ask JT to look over a timeline like the one above and come up with more than an apology for "missteps."

And yet he will always have the time and energy to capitalize from it.

Maybe I'm an asshole
Oops, did I take it too far?

Re: the whole revived "Free Britney" thing, and the accompanying reexamination of how she was treated in the first place...

People were reminded at least one comedian tried to make this point back in 2007:

That was a great speech. Great insight.

It needs to be repeated  he did this at the height of her public breakdown  and was asking for grace for someone that a lot of people didn’t.
Parts of the free Britney movement gets on Qanon levels, Craig does not.

Whenever someone complains about “cancel culture”, I respond with “That’s how a free market economy works.” Employment at will, non-unionization, well that means people can get fired from their jobs for no damn reason at all, or a reason with which they don’t agree.

I will use “don’t like, don’t watch/hire” against people as a cudgel.

Yep.

I also love how all these people who say they've been "cancelled" keep going out there and talking about it all over the place. Maybe I have a different definition of "cancelled", but if you're able to go out there and still keep talking about what happened, and found a new job rather quickly besides, that doesn't sound like you've been all that "cancelled" to me. But what do I know?

Yes.  If you say or do something that offends someone they have every right to not support your TV shows/movies/music/political career or whatever.  Nobody is under any obligation to blindly support someone and overlook/forgive/agree with anything they find offensive.  People are always confusing freedom of speech with freedom of consequences.

Very few people are really cancelled.  Although Stephen Collins seems to be permanently cancelled.

I have my own Freedom of Speech rant. Freedom of speech, as protected by the First Amendment, states Congress shall make no law... The First Amendment relates to government prohibiting speech. That means any website not owned by or run by any form of US government can kick you off at any point in time. That's why they have user agreements and Terms of Service available for you to read and most platforms stick to the ToS to ensure fair use and to attract people to the site.

Dolly has to be one of the sweetest people on the planet. Country isn't even my fave, but I just adore this woman. She's such a great role model for everyone.

What a shame! She went full Joker.

I think she'd look fine if she didn't have that line across her face (giving the "Joker" look).

I don't like country and don't even like Dolly's corny humor - but I'm certainly a fan of Dolly as a person!

Dolly Parton’s nonprofit Imagination Library has distributed over 147 million free books to children.

Quote

Twenty-five years on, Imagination Library is more important than ever to Parton and the kids it serves, she said. That may explain the personal touch she’s been bringing to it.

“And now with people trapped in houses?” she said. “That’s why I’ve been reading books to children at night on YouTube.”

Perez Hilton continues to illustrate what a piece of utter garbage he is.

On one hand. he claims he 'regrets" how he hounded Britney Spears at the height of her crisis.

Perez Hilton has ‘regret’ for his treatment of Britney Spears in the 2000s

But out of the other side of his lying mouth, his last two videos posted are... about Britney.  And four of his videos in the past week.

And listen to what he's actually saying...

I'm not even saying for sure he's wrong with his conclusions.  But he has SOME nerve commenting on this.  He used her as a punchingbag for years to advance his own career, so the better part of discretion, if he really was sorry for his previous behavior would be to just shut his mouth and find something else to talk about.

Agree that Mr. Hilton DOES have the nerve of a canal horse to be commenting on this- considering his own past actions!

Of course it's also telling that he and his colleague are saying on the one hand that they claim that there's ZERO chance that someone could be placed under conservatorship in California due to  some very strict laws (as if there's never been any case in the history of the world of officials either ignoring said guidelines and/or having palms greased to have someone NOT fitting said guidelines to be forceably and needlessly put under them against their will) and, of course, seems to totally ignore the sad if not exploitative history 'her family and closest [alleged] friends' have had with her BUT then they say that it's wrong for folks to disbelieve her claims of 'being fine'.  OK, so WHY aren't they themselves willing to believe her OWN words when she has made the case for WHY she doesn't want to stay under this conservatorship for the rest of her life and, at the very least, if it MUST continue, she would have preferred the temporary person appointed to head it over her father ?  IOW, they themselves only want to believe her when it suits their OWN agenda (  in this case,  that she says she's okay)  but not when it contradicts their hypothesis that she MUST be under this conservatorship for the rest of her life and that there's zero chance that anyone wanting to keep her in this state  could be doing it for any reason other than for her own good) .BOO!!!!!!!!!!- to the both of them (not that I ever had any liking for  or trust in Mr. Hilton).

From PeopleParis Hilton Engaged to Partner Carter Reum

They got engaged on her 40th birthday. He’s 40 too. She wants kids (she’s already considered a high risk pregnancy by most OB-GYNs & fertility specialists & anyone else who treats women looking to have babies) so if she wants her own I wish her luck!

This is at least the third time she’s been engaged. Anyone wanna start a pool on whether or not this 1 will last? She’s always said the same thing about her previous fiancés & none of the engagements sealed the deal.

Fourth.  It's hard to guess.  The first two happened over 15 years ago and I wouldn't necessarily hold those against her since she was quite young.  The third happened a few years ago and alone, I wouldn't really hold that against her because that happens sometimes.  But all together?  It could finally be the right time for her as a mature woman or it could be a mess of a pattern.

Hell, I give her credit for backing out of the relationships before the weddings. Three broken engagements could’ve easily been three divorces.

I would agree with you. However, I'm not entirely sure that all three engagements were broken by Miss Hilton alone instead  by mutual agreement and/or by  one or more of the intended grooms alone -despite whatever claims she may have been stated since it's not unknown for celebs and/or their intendeds to spin events to the public  differently from what  actually transpired.

My whole family loves Dolly, especially my mom. When my parents recently got their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, she was so excited that they got Moderna because it was the vaccine her money helped fund. As a result, my mom calls it the "Dolly vaccine". 😊

Not much more to add except she is indeed a national treasure. The fact that she is so humble is very refreshing!!

But it doesn’t matter who broke the engagement, it still means it didn’t lead to a life of multiple divorces for her.

Yeah, eight years is nothing when the younger party is almost 30.

Eh... I still think it's weird. As the original commenter said, not inherently skeevy. But personally, I think 30-40 is one of those time periods like 20-30 where depending on the numbers, if there's a significant age gap, you're in very different stages of your life. But I also don't care about Shailene Woodley or the sports guy.

It wasn’t the original article I found, but it does say Josh Duhamel is replacing Armie Hammer in a film, Shotgun Wedding, co-starring Jennifer Lopez & filming in Costa Rica for 4 months.

Not that it would have been a hit with Armie Hammer but I hear Josh Duhamel and think... yeah, that movie's definitely gonna be a flop. Also, why is she making two wedding movies back to back? I was getting this confused with Marry Me.

True and one didn't hear her do the 'always a bridesmaid but never a bride' lament!

Of course, one telling sign of whether it was she or her intended/s who broke the engagements would be if she had kept the ring/s. It used to be that if the intended groom broke it, he was supposed to 'magnanimously' permanently let the would-be bride keep the ring whereas if the intended bride broke the engagement, she was supposed to return the ring to the would-be groom.

However, not only would Miss Hilton have never needed to keep the rings to keep herself from starving, one can't say she has ever been a stickler for etiquette rules!

It strikes me that the bar to what we call celebritydom has been lowered in recent years. There are more people who are famous to less people and for less work.

I would push back on the "less work" part. Sure, there are some terrible people who get rewarded for being pretty and doing very little. But I'm actually not surprised at how many minor celebrities there are now because these people put in the work to engage with their audiences. Compare an old school celebrity who would, at most put out a handful of films in a year (if they happened to be released at the same time) and maybe do some red carpets and talk show appearances... with the kind of "whos" that post every day on Instagram and put out at least one video a week on youtube and reply to comments on social media and nowadays usually also have a weekly or biweekly podcast. These "amateurs" are pumping out content at a higher rate because they don't need to put out the same quality of work to get attention. And, of course, regular celebs are picking up on it. It seems like I hear about a new celeb podcast (that I refuse to listen to) every other day.

You're correct. Consider Greta Garbo  who walked away from Hollywood and stardom after her last movie released in 1941 at age 35 and declared 'I want to be LEFT alone' but she was trailed by paparazzi and fake friends eager to capitalize on her enduring fame  for almost the next half-century until her death in 1990. I mean, she made all the money she needed to live comfortably the rest of her life, wasn't doing anybody any harm so it made no sense why she just wasn't left alone to go on her solitary daily exercise walks even considering that she had an unforgettable face!
