I was thinking more of the body lotion that has a little bit of bronzer (?) in it or even a couple sweeps of powder makeup to give her skin a healthy fresh glow, not a Mechelle type of tan. 4 Link to comment

Pale, untanned skin is lovely; no need to tan in the tanning bed, the spray tan, or under the sun. Thank you! As a super fair-skinned white girl who was ridiculed for it (sometimes still am) as a kid, I sometimes did spray tans in my early 20s (I only burn then freckle in the sun, so fake tanner was the only option). It did make me look thinner and made my teeth appear so much whiter (because of the contrast), but it also was expensive, time consuming, messy, a pain to upkeep, and in retrospect, really ridiculous. Many of my friends who could tan (or tan then burn) or who could/would tan in the tanning bed now have premature aging/skin damage in their 30s that has really taken a toll on their looks (not to mention that they've put themselves more at risk for skin cancer by tanning in tanning beds/in the sun). Criticizing fair skinned people's skin tone can lead them to do things that will hurt their skin & their health in pursuit of not being "so pale" or "so white" (especially teens & young adults whose long-term decision making brain part isn't completely formed yet). It's a dangerous criticism (not to mention hurtful). We don't all have the same skin tones/colors and every skin tone, from fairest fair to darkest dark, is beautiful and should be celebrated. Your skin is your largest organ. It's not like adding mascara to light eyelashes or curling straight hair since it's such a big part of your body. Love and embrace the way God/the Flying Spaghetti Monster/Genetic Variation in Your Ancestry/Etc has made your skin - dark, tan, able to tan, fair, etc. Fair skinned white people l shouldn't need to bronze or orange themselves any more than a dark skinned person should feel they need to bleach their skin to lighten it. No one would dare publicly suggest a dark skinned black woman should bleach their skin lighter. No one should suggest fair skinned people should attempt to make themselves bronzer/tanner/darker/etc. Skin tone variation is a thing and should be celebrated and accepted as beautiful no matter where on the varied spectrum of skin color ones falls. No matter what your skin tone is, you are beautiful. [And wearing fake tanner with a white/light colored wedding dress when you might sweat from nerves/camera lighting/etc is a recipe for disaster- like streaking bronzer from sweating and orange/bronze stains on the edges of the white dress. Not to mention that fake tanner/bronzer is notorious for leaving streaky, weird looking hands (especially since it isn't added to one's palms) and lots of people will be looking at the bride's hand at her reception because of the ring.] /rant over Edited April 11, 2019 by MyPeopleAreNordic 43 Link to comment
3 is enough April 12, 2019 Share April 12, 2019 (edited) Thank you, MyPeopleAreNordic. When my husband (olive skinned Italian) and I visited Ireland he told me “Look! Everyone here is pasty white like you!” 😂 I never tried a fake bake but I did my share of sunbathing as a teen. The legacy of those years is annual skin checks at the dermatologist, numerous pre-cancerous lesions frozen off, and to date, one basal cell cancer removed. I am an SPF 50 girl now. Agree about too much sunbathing as a teen. I keep telling teenage granddaughter that my best beauty advice to her is use sunscreen. We just came back from visiting and she told me she uses sunscreen every day. 10 Link to comment
Zella April 13, 2019 Share April 13, 2019 (edited) Yeah I honestly don't get why people rag folks for being naturally pale. I always thought people who have naturally pale skin have a lovely complexion that looks much better than fake tanner does. I'm naturally olive-skinned (and like my natural complexion), but when I look pale, I look like death warmed over. No natural glow there at all! Edited April 13, 2019 by Zella 7 Link to comment

That fake bake color is not a natural human skin tone- it looks good on NO ONE!!! I’m for adults doing what they want with their own bodies, but sun screen is important and skin cancer is a thing. I dont understand why people bake themselves in ovens to change color. A natural tan that occurs with the change of seasons is one thing (that happens to me although I wear sun screen every day), but orange isn’t natural. I think the evidence points to us humans pretty much always looking for something to rag someone about. (Just look at us right here. ; ) ) And skin color is a large, obvious, and unmistakable fact. No one's likely to challenge you by saying, No, that person is not pale/freckled/dark/whatever. Humans rag. Skin color's a very easy target (or metaphorical target for something more sinister you really mean to say but not say hint hint.) See: racism through history. I'm naturally olive-skinned (and like my natural complexion), but when I look pale, I look like death warmed over. No natural glow there at all! The “why” is because when the Industrial revolution forced the european and North American working class indoors, having lesiure time to sit outside (and a tan) was a sign of WEALTH. Before the industrial revolution having the palest skin possible was a sign of wealth because that meant you worked indoors (or not at all). For Black Americans our obsession with colorism is rooted in the signifier that lighter skin meant a closer relationship to white persons in authority (and lighter work in an agrigcultural society). (I don’t doubt that you know this, I’m just pointing out it’s all about status) The fake orange color is now a signifier that you have resources to spend on cosmetics and leisure time to apply them. I’m sure the Duggar girls have gotten into the fake bake thing because it was one of the few ways they were allowed to be creative with their appearance or express themselves. I’m less critical of teens doing this (that’s the developmentally appropriate time) but adult women should be a little more discerning. @Churchhoney Has pointed out despite all the girls being grown ass adults now (even Joy-Anna the youngest), they are mentally and socially stunted. Because it’s the JB& Abbie thread- I think Abbie’s cosmetic and hair routine looks nice. She may do fake tanning but it’s not too dark, and her makeup looks natural. I actually like her brows, some people have thicker brows. 2 16 Link to comment

It drives me nuts when Abbie is referred to as a "glitter girl." Like I've posted before, we've barely seen her wear anything sparkly or glittery.
