Wow, I can totally see Jessa there.  I think it's the eyes.

I went to the site and clicked through these pics of Michelle.  You see a normal teenage girl of the times and then as you are clicking and there are more and more kids, you see the crazy in her eyes.

Why is Josie's hair still so thin and sparse? I'd expect that on a young toddler who's hair hasn't filled in yet, but she's seven. I know she can't help it, but the poor kid doesn't look to be in good health at all.

I don't think her hair is really that sparse. It's just that her hair is almost the same color as her skin. If you look at her forehead, her hairline is at a normal level.

Maybe because her mother puts baby lotion on it?  She does have the super high Duggar forehead.  Give the poor girl some bangs.

Some people just have thin hair.  I have to wonder if they cut it because it does seem quite short compared to what Jennifer and Jordyn's hair looked like when they were 7.

I have thin hair and it was totally duckfeathery and unruly until I was around seven or eight. Since you don't have that much hair to begin with, a few mats and tangles can pretty much occupy all the hairs on your head, making it appear sparse. Mom pro tip for Jana: combing alleviates this condition.

I tend to see the covenant marriage as a form of pre-nup since it creates legal boundaries for how the marriage ends.

If the covenant marriage isn't a pre-nup it's in lieu of a pre-nup.

Basically I don't think it out and out says you can't divorce (as that would seem legally impossible), but it would set up heavy penalties for the person ending the marriage, which is one of the things a pre-nup does.

Actually no a covenant marriage does not set penalties for the person ending the marriage.  It requires things like a longer separation before a divorce and specific grounds for a divorce.  It also only applies if they made a covenant marriage in one of the three states permitting it and also got divorced in one of those three states.

My hair was not long enough to put into a ponytail until I was eight because it took all grow in and was kept short. It was easier to deal with the curly hair if it was short. My mom eventually started to let me grow it out more when she knew I could care for it on my own and I wanted to french braid it like all the girls with long, straight hair. Unfortunately, while my hair did grow it out, it also entered into a bushy, young Hermione-esque phase that it did not emerge from until sophomore year of high school.

My younger cousin is the same age as Josie, and she has similar hair—strawberry blonde, curly, and pretty thin. It looks about the same as Josie's most of the time, but better combed;)

I think when push comes to shove, the males can get out these fundy marriages easier than the women can.  If the woman doesn't conceive (and we know in fundy circles it's always the woman's fault) the men get to pass go & collect $200.

And if you get caught with porn, you go directly to Jesus Jail and you do not collect $200.

More likely she's the one who's going to custody of the five or so kids they've popped out so far, have little to no job experience/education or way to support them and rely on a very minimal child support (based on his income and assets).

Seriously, YES about the bangs. Among the many unfortunate gifts my father gave me, one was his Klingon fivehead (because it's waaaay more than a four!) I also have similar natural coloring like Josie, so my skin and hair up until about age 8 could be described as "Elmers school glue" or "skim milk" lol.  Bangs and a hair brush will do wonders for that pasty little feral miracle.

Are the Radfords Gothardites or heathens? Since I can't picture an English Gothardite, I assume they are heathens. Does God favor HEATHENS over the Duggars? According to their own philosophy, it would seem so. Michelle, why did God give Sue Radford's womb another precious blessing and not yours? Hmmmm? Think about it. Looooooong and hard. Never stop thinking about it. Think about it all day and all night. Does it burn? Good. Because pregnancy and birth is a biological condition that has been a part of all carbon-based life since the beginning of carbon-based life and has fuck-all to do with Bastardized Abusive-Boyfriend Jesus and how much he approves of you. Blind, willful, appalling, disgusting, insulting, dangerous, hateful ignorance can cut both ways, Meeemeee.

Plus, in my opinion Jizm Boob and Meeechelle are the kind of people who truly don't see any other humans as actually being human. They're completely self-absorbed. The mere fact that other people even have points of view is largely lost on them, and to the extent they know that other points of view exist they simply discount them. That's their nature. And it's been confirmed over the years by their great good luck -- in having 19 kids with only one sad disaster, in getting these damn tv shows to pay the bills, in living near people who are kind -- and stupid -- enough to leave them groceries when JB's throwing his money away on senate races. Etc. When you take a self-centered person and add a whole lot of good luck, a self-centered monster is created. Never would cross their damn minds that it would be nice for guests to have a private, clean place to sleep. Or that their kids are actual individual humans.

In a word, they are simply classic, textbook narcissists and inflict narcissistic abuse on their victims (including their own children) and who won't get help because, like all narcissists, they think they're perfect and all problems lie in others' behaviors and not their own.

Grandparenting conference? How long does it take to say "appreciate your grandkids for how many there are, not who they are, and only interact with them if it's for a photo op."

Naw, Gothard Grand-parenting is all about making sure you keep them in the cult. Gotta oversee what's happening in the Kidults' homes, now that you cant surveil them 24/7.  Lessons in guilting your kids and quickie indoctrination techniques for when babysitting.

Don't forget, there is that separate little apartment one of the outbuildings.  The one

Ben lived in.

Wasn't that just a room in a metal garage? "Apartment" seems overly generous. Maybe Benn seems dim from all the gasoline fumes he inhaled while sleeping there.

A funny thing just happened to me that reminded me of Blob. A neighbor just stopped by because she was going to the store and because one of the children is sick I can't go and because I was really not listening she said Rabbittron Hey Hey Hey and I started laughing because that reminds me that Blob. Now I need Brain Bleach.

I often try to imagine(I'm bored!)  the different ways Jim Bob manipulates his children.

"Jana, you've got to do it for the family!"

"Jill, it's what God wants!"

"Jessa, come over here and look at the bottom line.  That's your share."

"Joy, I am still your father and you will do as I say!"

"Jinger?  Jinger?"

I know you're joking around but I could see Boob & MEchelle's manipulation being far more subtle and passive-aggressive in nature. You know, mess with the kidults heads. Something like, "Jesus loves those who honor their father's wishes" and let the kidults stew for a while to contemplate whether their current behavior is 'pleasing to the Lord'.

Yes I grew up with a maddeningly passive-aggressive mother.

I am joking but I do think Jim Bob probably tailors his manipulation to fit the child.  I don't think "It pleases Jesus" would mean the same thing to Jessa that it would to Jill.

Oh gosh.  I was raised 180 degrees from fundy (Jewish) and my father always thought I should do what he wanted.  When my new husband had some suggestions (we were divorced after 11 years) my father was horrified and said why are you doing x,y and z I said "because my husband wants me to and you always said the husband rules".  Actually I didn't mind doing any of what it was, not much really, but, liked sticking it to my father.  So the Joy one made me laugh.  Unless Joy complies, then I will cry.

I don't see this as much  JB and Michelle, but I could see Kelly and Gil being like this (and other fundie families as well).

I think All the fundy families use this manipulation along with physical methods to control their children.  It's also common among non fundy families. It's just that fundy families use it to turn their children into mindless robots while non fundies just  want their children to be productive happy healthy adults.

Someone should be in jail for that.

Not to defend it, because I don't think a child that young should be sexually active, but you can't go to jail for statutory rape unless one party is over 18. It looks like they were a teenage couple. To their credit, the next child is 5 years younger.

I guess it's possible, if she was almost 14 (I didn't look into it more closely, so have no idea of her exact age), he could have been just over 18, but at this point it hardly matters in the major scheme of things.

I believe someone should be held responsible for it.if whoever fathered the baby was only 17 there should've been consequences. Also consequences to whoever HER parents are as they failed in not preventing a 14 year old becoming pregnant.

Im disgusted they mimicked the Duggars on top of it.

The age of consent in the U.K. Is lower than most states in the US.  20 kids out, it probably wasn't seen as criminal behavior back then, but more like 2 crazy kids who couldn't keep their pants on.

In The Godfather movie, the girl who played Michael Corleone's young bride was only 17 doing a near nude scene, as well as 13/14 year old Brooke Shields   That was in the 70's, and would be considered criminal today.

Even when I was in high school, it was not unheard of for 13 year olds to be having sex with boyfriends close to their age. Tragic, yes, but it happened in the early 80s, and they're starting even younger.

When we were stationed in Hawaii the first time (back in 1999), I think they had only just moved the age of consent up to 16 from 14. Even so, my daughter remembers when she was registering for high school, there was a girl behind her in line who was actually pregnant with her second baby!!

No, Gothard wouldn't, but I could see Jim Bob and Michelle doing it anyway, keeping it on the down low and rationalizing that it was okay because Jesus laid it on their hearts.
