Post-Election Fears & Anxieties

Well, yeah, lol, but what I mean is, threads here will updates people may want to avoid. Even the show threads might. I assume people who want a news blackout wants a news blackout.  The friend I'm texting later is avoiding everything but Netflix and books. No radio, no social media, nothing. I was thinking if people were checking threads to see if it was safe yet, they'd find out it wasn't and learn more than they wanted. Am I being dense? I'm exhausted today.

I'm confused by what "safe" means in this context. Does that mean after a winner is declared? Like, they don't want to know anything until the election is called nationwide?

If things stay on the "anti-anxiety" theme here, this thread should help with avoidance. I hope so--as even with good poll numbers, my anxiety is high. I tried to set up a new thread, but forgot that it would just make another thing to mod--and on an Election Day! Oops. Sorry about that!

This is nice from c-Span, the Bruce Springsteen set yesterday: https://www.c-span.org/video/?417997-102/bruce-springsteen-hillary-clinton-campaign-rally

For all of the people who have a Republican friend on Facebook: one of my high school FB friends just voted and made the statement that we shouldn't hear anything about the 2020 election for at least two years!  I liked her post and told her Canada's elections were only seven weeks.  To my surprise she responded and said we should get on board with that!  The moral of this story is even if we disagree politically,  we can find common ground.

Callmebetty, I can't say for sure what lurks in the hearts of the Trump voters I know or what motivates them to want terrible things. Fear of losing privilege, anxiety over social progress, fundamentalist brainwashing, etc. might be part of it. A couple of Trumpers I know are just honestly malicious people who swoon to the siren song of the orange bully. I asked a co-worker why he wanted to say the N word so badly, and after hemming and hawing, he could only come up with "black people get to say it!"

Around here, guns are damn near treated like fetish objects. A couple of co-workers peruse gun mags once a week with the excitement of a horny teenager seeing their first porno. They have sad, hilarious fantasies of being bad ass, sharpshooting heroes who turn robbers into Swiss cheese with their mad skillz. For years they've been promised that freedom-hating libs are going to confiscate their armories, yet they still have them. Gun manufacturers must be making a buttload of money off my small town. Oh yeah, some of these gun nuts truly, earnestly believe that they will be called upon to overthrow the government and water the tree of liberty and that all their fellow Americans will rise up with them instead of pointing and laughing. My co-worker acted like I was the nutbar when I told them the government would kick their ass; they really think their plucky patriotic selves will defeat armored vehicles and missiles.

Sorry that turned into a rant! It probably doesn't explain much about why Trumpers want what they want. A lot of it seems to come down to fear.

I admire you NP. I worked for many years with people (men) who were avid hunters and were sure the libs, the one-worlders and the black helicopters would be showing up at their doors to confiscate their precious guns any day now. They wanted to put anti-lgbt stuff on the company website until I pointed out that "those" people have money too. They said things like "America was doing great until we "gave" women the right to vote. Called me a tree hugger for no discernible reason (I never mentioned any particular green leanings). But when I went home, was around my neighbors, family or friends I was among sane, reasonable humans. I can't imagine not only hearing that crap at work, but in my community as well. Tip of the hat for keeping your great sense of humor, humanity and your sanity.

Since I don't have anything really purple, I wore white and lavender when I went to vote and gave silent thanks to all of the women who fought for this day.

I didn't hear anything about purple, so I wore white, for suffrage, and blue for democrats.

I don't know how to post a picture from twitter (is it simply copy and paste?), but there's a picture of a really long line and it says "This isn't a line for voting--it's a line to view Susan B. Anthony's grave site."  Awesome.

I was shaking today when I was voting.  I'm so nervous and anxious right now, that I feel sick to my stomach.  I think going to a long movie was the right call.  It starts in about an hour.  I'll check back in (regularly) later this afternoon.  Hang in there everyone!

I am a native South Floridian who helplessly watched (in horror)  as the 2000 election results unraveled as  17 year old girl. That election possibly changed the entire course of my young adulthood.16 years later, I live in the same county that fumbled that election and I am terrified. If I didn't have to work tonight, I definitely would be imbibing in a glass of wine or two. I am so, so nervous.

Please for the love of God, can Florida just be blue (and stay blue)! I feel hopeless between our Gov. Rick Skeletor trying to stop mail-in ballots being counted, and our inadequate Sup. of Elections in this county, Brenda Snipes, whose ballots were found multiple mistakes during early voting. I don't even want to get started on the people reporting glitches in the computer system. Hoping and praying that this election really isn't left up to us.

I'm more nervous than ever after reading Trump supporters have said today, they can't wait to celebrate Trump's win so they can "start building ovens," for all those Blacks, Jews, Hispanics, Asians, Muslims, Catholics.......sickening!  After "The View," I'm tuning back into classic tv reruns & classical music radio until the polls close.  G-d Hear Our Prayers!

who said that?   where?

God I hope I'm not getting Strep Throat! FUCKING sore throat woke me up around the wee hours and now I can barely swallow without feeling like someone's trying to ram their hand down my throat.

What does this mean? It means I can't drink tonight and will have to watch the results sober! I am not happy.

Get yourself some cough syrup, you can get pretty fucked up on that! Godspeed!!

Usually Chlorasepting my throat usually numbs the pain, but this time it burns.

I made some traditional chai and added cloves and fresh ginger, and it helped a little.

Think I'll have some mint tea now. I think it's the hot that is most easing.

Thanks for the tip on cough syrup! I have both Robitissum AND NyQuil, so they should do the trick!?

Ok, for those who want to avoid the news, but want to know when it's safe to come out, do you have a plan for that (good grief, I spent hours yesterday asking people to support Hillary, Hassan and blue down the ticket and asking if they had a plan to vote. I think I am stuck)? Like a friend or relative or anyone who can alert you by phone or text or PM? I'm being serious, because if you really want to be on blackout, you should be able to. I'm doing that for a friend (texting her to let her know when it's safe to get back online or turn on TV. I don't have that kind of willpower for this, but if you do, I hope it works. It won't be easy.

I'm waiting for a call from my Mum's hospice doctor in Canada, eh.  Then at 4:30 in the p.m. (left coast time) I'll be at my vet's office getting an insulin update on my last living indoor kitty.  And even if they legalize pot, I can't afford it (nor can I grow it without nasty fucking bud-eating worms!!!).  I'm fucked no matter what happens today.  :-(

If you feel well enough get out and buy some Throat Coat tea .  Singers use this to take care of their voices and it's always worked for me.  Also if you want the option of drinking, a good old fashioned hot toddy (hot lemon with rum or brandy) will give your throat some relief and you will definitely get a buzz on.  Just go slow or you'll sleep through the whole election results commentary.

I am somewhat heartened by a segment from HBO's Vice news last night.  Three guys traveling the country talking to Trump supporters in an attempt to ensure a peaceful aftermath.  They recognize that these folks will need a voice, that the voice should be calm, that the "deplorables" might want to work toward a third party, and that a third party need not be extreme.

Don't be a wuss - chain smoking & hard drinking is an antidote to other EEEEVILS, including bad election results.  :-)

Shoot, I don't have brandy, but I have whiskey! I'm sure replacing Johnnie for the hot toddy should be okay ?

I don't feel like going out. Plus I have my Halls to suck on.

Took the Robitussum- though it expired six months ago!? It should still work though not as effectively.

despite an antibiotic prescription I laid in some good vodka

I asked a physician about this long ago.  Here's what she said:   Drinking alcohol while on an antibiotic will not hurt you, with the exception of one powerful antibiotic that shouldn't be combined with alcohol or it will kill you.  If you are on this drug, you are already at death's door.  Otherwise, drink up.  At worst, it may reduce the efficacy of the antibiotic. A risk you're probably prepared to take.

You're just lucky my brother and his wife lured me to Philly last night.  And yes it was orgasmic especially since we were some of the last ones let inside the barriers.

But thanks to trains planes and automobiles I am finally home but needed to hop online longer than I planned and got lured in to check on my support group here.  Thanks btw.

anyway.  Look I love the rest of you but medicine?  Fuck that.  Who wants to be lucid?

You want booze and you want relief. Easy peasy.   Boiling water, add lemon juice, honey and a shot of something dark.  Make sure the lemon is enough to give the drink a nice tartness and enough honey to sooth.  For  Jack or Jim, Rum, you can even go vodka if that is all you got.  Repeat as many times as necessary.  Or desired.  Or both.

Voted this morning.  Glad I got that done thought I  saw three vaguely looking celebrity types who wanted so much to be admired and seen but I have no idea who they were.  Nor did I care to.  A couple of tv reporters were showing up just as I left.  Perfect timing on my part. Several Republicans for Hillary who took off jackets to show their pins when they came out of the polls; white haired women dressed to the nines.  Very heartening to see.  A couple of cops came out and put on I Voted For Her which was really surprising and nice as well.  I hope they provided the media with some nice optics that refute the meme the Rancid Yam has tried to sell.

Off to the bottles and food and perfect feel good television for me: The Great Australian Bake Off and then Master Chef UK the Professionals.  Deep breaths everyone and I strongly urge any feeling panic with the advice already given.  Watch Full Frontal.  Watch last night's The Daily Show (Jonathan Capeheart was the perfect guest for election eve).

Tomorrow I hope all I have to bitch about is the determined but failed effort of that Orange Thing trying to keep the attention he so poorly did not deserve.  Here's to what I hope is the newest member to the Adams-Harrison -Johnson-Roosevelt - Bush Club.

Medicine.  Jeesh.

Alcohol can slow judgement and result in temporary memory loss regarding reduced efficacy of another medication. If that happens you'll be reminded about that for the rest of your life *weg*

I have never used rum or brandy in a toddy: it's always been whiskey for me (Jameson's to be specific).  But I'd be that either would be great.

I'm very tempted to see if my friend (tonight's dinner partner) would be willing to try to get into Javits Center.

LOL -- sorry, @random chance -- I KNOW NOTHING OTHER THAN WE HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF (and in my case, all that fear is floating in a forty ouncer of vodka so this might be the most cogent thing I say all day).

I burst into tears just telling someone about Hillary's rally in Philadelphia, and I only caught what MSNBC showed.  Yikes.   Between my election anxiety and the history making possibility of electing our first woman president I am almost overwhelmed.   This place is the only place I can say that without feeling crazy.   Thank you all.

I haven't smoked pot since college (30 years) but I'm stopping today to get something for my anxiety [I live in WA, it's legal.]   Plus, I have a new bottle of good gin, some good vodka, plenty of olives and hubby is making tacos.

Again - thanks so much for starting this thread, SpartanGirl!

I emailed my parents last night after watching Orange Thing speak in Michigan (yah, you go, "Bland" Rapids) and asked if they really wanted him to make good on his threat/promise to return to Michigan over and over and over again to "be with his people" if he won. They were hardcore Bernie supporters and I think my mom is going to vote HRC but my dad was still threatening to write in Bernie. Come on, my home state, don't open the door for that Cheeto-colored strange man promising you candy.

I don't have a pantsuit, but I'm in my best dyke power outfit and I'm about to take off early to go vote. This just had to be the day my morning was full of meetings, too. Gah!!! I think I signed up for a ton of work just to get people to stop talking.

Word of advice - do not stress eat kale. I ate an entire clamshell yesterday and...WTF was I thinking??? I'd better be recovered enough from that to drink the wine and champagne (I forgot what I bought, but it was French and it was recommended here!) and beer I stocked up on yesterday.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the live thread!

This is like one of the odd ball disclaimers that they give on pharmaceutical commercials.  If you experience headaches, upset stomach, backache, sudden loss of hearing, swelling of throat and tongue, increased kale consumption and/or erection that won't last, immediately cease all election exposure and see your doctor.
