And here we were, all the girls in class reading Clan of the Cave Bear in 5th grade and no one batted an eye. I may have gotten some slightly skewed ideas about human sexuality from that one lol. I dearly wish I could be a fly on the wall should Jill or any of the Duggar daughters ever get hold of that series and read it since even perfectly innocent romance novels are considered "porn for women" by their ilk. Didn't Jill go to a teenager's birthday party at one time to lecture the girls on the importance of avoiding even fictional romance lest they'd accidentally give away pieces of their heart to the hero or something?

OMGosh I had forgotten those books! I was a grown woman with five children when I read them and they made me blush. Here's an excerpt:

I'll put it in a spoiler..

Spoiler

"But for all the screaming and squealing, Whinney was not trying to reject her stallion, and, as she watched, Ayla felt strange stirrings within herself, sensations she could not explain. She could not tear her eyes away from the bay stallion, his front legs up on Whinney’s back, pumping, and straining, and screaming. She felt a warm wetness between her legs, a rhythmic pulsation in time to the stallion’s pounding, and an incomprehensible yearning." 🤤

Pretty much every guy I've known who was drawn to bitchy/snobby/drama-queen women always had major issues themselves, no matter how good they looked on paper. What's that saying? Water rises to its' own level?

I've also noticed that many of these guys don't have mothers, either. Dr. Abercrombie Model's mom died when he was a kid, and I really think that has something to do with it. I could see the dad being just like the son, and being like, "hot passionate chick you got there, son!" while a mother would see through a girl like that.

You should have seen her wedding website! Every word was like, "he spotted her, in all of her sumptuous glory, arching back her beautiful head and drinking her apple martini in the most sexy way. Their eyes met, as they stared at each other breathlessly, and his gaze went up and down her perfectly contoured body, lingering to appreciate the beautiful pink flowers on her blue dress." You KNOW he did not write a word of that! Who sits around and spends hours writing that crap on their wedding website, and who is that stuck on themselves (especially when they are clearly the less attractive member of the couple)? At least her self-esteem isn't low. She also CONSTANTLY humblebrags, like, "cuddle bear took me to a concert last night and we sat in the front row of the VIP section! We got waaaay too drunk, so poor me, I have to hit the stair master on this Monday morning with a hangover! Even worse, I also have to run to CVS. Suuuuuch a busy day!" Ughhhh.

Back to Jill, I'm so surprised that Deena works! I wonder what she does. It would be interesting for Jill to explain to her why she herself is incapable of working, although Derick is in school!

Jill posted a couple of videos of Derick reading Xmas stories to Israel. What a fucking disaster and total embarrassment they are.

Sam is clearly too young to understand and partake, but instead of having him do another activity appropriate to him elsewhere in the house, they let him sit in the same room and create a ruckus, making it hard for anyone to concentrate. Derick reads in a monotone, with no emotion whatsoever. It's like he's just going through the motions. I don't know what Israel could have possibly gotten from these stories. In the second video he doesn't even appear to be paying attention, probably because he can't help but be entirely distracted and his dad reads and interacts with him like a robot.

I have a new phone and can’t copy videos to post for some reason. There’s a new one up of Derick teaching Israel to play the trumpet. The first word out of Derick’s mouth, “Don’t “, and he says it repeatedly throughout.

This may be OT - but I saw it and immediately thought of Derick. 1 in 4 law grads can't pas the bar 2 years after graduation. I'd love to see what they'd do in this scenario.

The problem law schools in this situation are the bottom-feeders, who have lowered their admission standards to keep in business.

I looked up the ABA report on bar exam passage rates cited in the article.

Derick's law school, U of Arkansas, has about an 82% bar exam pass rate for its graduates, which is not fabulous but not the worst. It's not a premiere law school in national rankings, but it seems to be holding its own somewhere in the middle of the pack overall. (I looked up its overall rating back when Derick enrolled, which is not only based on bar exam passage rates.)

The people I really feel sorry for are the ones who went to the really low-rated schools and then struggle to pass the bar exam after graduation. And all too many of them, tragically, incurred huge student loan debt to get their JD degrees.

In the Sam helping Jill cook picture, he is probably trying to figure out how to poison Jill And Derick.

Along with the story telling videos, this could be Inspiration for a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Sammy & Yay.

Truly those videos aren’t the worst reading I PvZ ever heard and I’m boing go go out on a limb here and say at least they are getting read to ... being read to is a great thing for vocabulary development and early reading skills

I’ve heard some realllllllly bad readings in my time working in a library but the kids are hear books being read out loud and following the story with the illustrations

Israel was SO docile and quiet during both of those Xmas Eve reading videos, I wonder if he had “gotten in trouble” prior to the videos, or if he was sick. And Derick seemed like he was trying hard to keep his frustration over the whole thing under control. Why didn’t Jill just video Iz and Derick instead of following Sam with the camera?

The impression I get--just as someone who lives in the area and has absolutely no law background--is that it works out pretty well if you intend to practice law in Arkansas, especially due to the networking opportunities, but if you have higher ambitions outside the state, it's not really your best option. Which seems to jibe with what you're saying about the bar exam pass rate.

This was my ex from like 5 years ago. I was close with probably 10 of his friends, and only two of them passed the bar. One only passed after getting some sort of further certification at a real law school, so that's essentially a one in ten passing rate. They went to Charlotte law, the worst law school in the country, which had since been closed down because it was terrible. I feel bad for them because they worked so hard for basically nothing but crushing debt. At least Derick has better chances than that, but I can't wait to see him studying for the bar. You absolutely can't have any kind of social life, and Jill won't take that well!

In the first video, at least Derick didn't hold down Sam and force him to listen to the story.  Like he did months ago when he was just a baby.

Also in the first video, Sam pulls down an Ariat boot box.  Four years ago, after I retired from a JOB, I took up line dancing.  I went to a huge Western store that had a whole wall of boots. Lots of Ariat boots, too.  I paid $200 for mine and they are gorgeous.  They all costed $200 plus, four years ago. But I have my pension from a JOB.  How's Jilly Muffin affording those Ariats?

In the second video, I noticed some really serious teething on Sam's crib rails.  I'm sure they don't use lead paint anymore, but still, that cannot be healthy.  It makes me to wonder if they leave Sam in his crib fussing for long periods.

I think it’s because Derick and Jill go out of their way to remind him that he’s not Rick Dillard.  No matter that he was Cathy’s main support when she had cancer while Derick was off playing  TV courtship, engagement, wedding, Christmas sing a long videos for a JB and Michelle video, and on and on. Rick Dillard  was their Dad, but he’s been gone 11 years. Have you ever seen Derick say 1 nice thing to or about Mr Byrum? Have you ever seem Derick spend any time with him that isn’t at one of their homes? Even out to dinner? I truly believe the Duggar’s and ther friends frown on second marriages, even for widows/widowers.

THIS!!!! This has always really bothered me. At first I thought maybe he was shy and didn't want to be on TV, but Derick NEVER says anything nice about him. Even if he vaguely mentioned that Mr. Byrum had done good things for his mom, that would be something, and wouldn't violate his privacy either. I definitely imagine dan and Deena treating him better.

Now that I know dan and Deena both work, it makes me even more curious. They seem to be more mainstream than Derick and Jill, in the same way that Cathy does. The Duggar vortex truly does suck 'em right in! You have:

Cathy, dan, and Deena:

believe women can work

Wear pants

Are okay with family members being separated during the day (Mom and Dad go to work, and baby goes to daycare)

can say something that doesn't have to do with jesus

aren't lazy

believe in paying their own way through life

believe in higher education, and using your degree

derick and Jill:

Don't believe in women working

didn't wear pants until recently

Feel like the family has to be together 24/7, even if it means bringing infants to inappropriate places or tagging along to law school classes

can't say anything that doesn't have to do with jesus

are incredibly lazy, and no one works

believe in grifting

derick wasted his accounting degree, and Jill never did anything with her dumb certificate (thank god). I still think law school was cathy's idea, and Derick went along with it because better school than work!

Derick does NOT look pleased to have his picture taken.  I wonder if last semester his grades weren't so great and now he knows he is going to actually have to buckle down and study this time around.  My first thought with Sam in the high chair was that someone yelled at him and he's trying to hide (like my dog used to when she would hide under the bed during thunderstorms, but you would still see her butt sticking out).

I think Derick would be fine if Jill worked. He bragged about her midwife studies, but she has proven to be lazy like him.

Oh yes! I 100% believe that Derick was led to think that Jill would work as a midwife while they were courting. He seems to have pushed her to do some sort of work the majority of their marriage...first midwifery, then language school, then missionary "work." He seems like the petty type who would think, "if I have to work, so does she!" Then when that failed, he just decided it would be better if neither of them worked. 😂

Count me in who also thinks that Derick is not the type of husband who would insist that Jill be a SAHM. In fact I could see Derick being resentful that Jill has not followed through on her goals (i.e., midwifery, missionary), since that is what he thought he was getting when he began courting Jill.

I don’t think the Duggars and their friends frown on a widow/widower remarrying. I think Derrick is probably such a DOUCHE he thinks his Mom should lie in a cold bed all alone for decades rather than taint the memory of his father. 🙄

He probably thinks she remarried too quickly (as in ever).

I can see Derrick resenting his mother remarrying, Mr Byrum thinking Derrick is ridiculous and him not wanting to rock the boat because he cares for his wife. Fact is both boys were out of the house when they got married, and Cathy still has good relationships with her sons- Mr Bynum is probably happy he doesn’t have to deal with Derrick any more than necessary. Not sure how he feels about Dan.

I think Derick would be fine with Jill working in a situation where he maintained control.  If the missionary thing had worked out, he'd have no problem with her standing alongside him passing out candy and tracts.  She could work as a midwife as part of the mission, too.  I don't think he'd be too thrilled if she wanted to work outside the home at something that didn't contribute to his goals.  If being a mission midwife means je looks better, then that's what Jesus wants and Derick could never argue against it.

My former, very intelligent husband, who actually went to law school for 3 years said law school was the hardest schooling he ever had. He had to study ALOT to pass and continue on. Then he had to pass the Florida Bar exam in 1982. I highly doubt that Derick has the environment to properly study at home. Jill needs to quit distracting him with her stupid picture taking. Leave the guy alone, with some quiet, to actually concentrate and absorb what he's doing. He also is NOT ALMOST a lawyer. He has just started. Will he make Law Review? How will he do in Moot Court? (I think I spelled that right.)

I agree! My ex (who did not pass the bar) told me right when we started dating that when he studied for the bar one day, I would basically not exist for like 6 months. In fact, their professors told them to tell their significant others that, so they wouldn't be surprised. Can't wait to see how Jill takes that!

I know this picture is dark, but his coloring looks off. I really doubt the guy is getting the nutrients he needs. I think his health has been off since he married Jill, with both the dietary habits and the jaw stuff and possible pain mess, and maybe he doesn't feel like himself anymore!

If Derick has been told that, he has probably dismissed it as just applying to ordinary students, not to someone as gifted as himself.

Seriously, though, I wonder if Derick has realized that there are students in his class who are much smarter, more articulate and with more academic ability than himself. Does he have enough humility to realize his weak points and work harder to overcome them? Or is he too steeped in the Duggar "God told us that we are better than everyone else, so we don't even have to try hard" mentality?
