It's good news they shrunk more than expected, but his prognosis is still terrible. I think that's getting a bit lost in the shuffle of the announcement. This is like...when he originally announced it was very doom and gloom...and now it's just bad.

That's true, but why live your life dreading the worst? I'm sure Alex just wants to focus on the positive, and IMO (as long as he's prepared for the worst) that's what he should be doing.

Actually, even a doctor will tell you that a positive attitude can make a difference.

I thought that particular myth had been debunked. Kudos to Alex for having a positive attitude but I hope other cancer patients aren't pressured into "having a good attitude." It must suck to have cancer and have people telling you all the time to be positive. Be however you need to be to get through it, I say. It's a terrible thing to deal with as it is.

I'm surprised no one got "raising Cain" even after James guessed "raising whatever."

I wonder if people who are going to be in the Tournament of Champions with James are now thinking I guess I'll be competing for second place.

I think the speculation now is that they'll have to do ToC without him because he'll still be playing.

Alex's news comes on the heels of my learning that a dear friend has had to place her adult daughter in hospice because her cancer has been declared incurable. Doctors brushed off her symptoms for 2 years because her insurance sucks. So I'm in a cynical mood and thinking that Trebek owes much of his progress to the top-of-the-line medical care that the rich and famous get.

It's an uplifting attitude to express more love in this world. Totally agree with Bliss on this point. However, as Calpurnia said, many cancer patients who are loved and keep a positive, "I will beat this" attitude do, in fact, die. I would never want to imagine someone on his or her deathbed feeling that they just weren't loved enough to survive. Cancer has its own will.

I'm ecstatic that Alex' tumors have shrunk by 50%, because that hopefully will buy him some time and perhaps lessen his physical pain for now. That still leaves tumors of half the previous size. All of us know that to be cancer-free, every single cancer cell must be eliminated, because it only takes one cell to replicate and kill.

I have two members of my immediate family who have survived breast cancer. One for three years, and one for 30 years (she was very young when she was diagnosed). I would have given them all my body parts to keep them alive and well, but they are alive and well for a multiplicity of reasons, and I thank God that they are.

Abstract, so sorry for your friend's daughter.

I'm saying what about all the people with a positive attitude that die? Many many millions with positive attitudes die. 1 in 4 die of breast cancer no matter how hard they fight or how early it is diagnosed or how hard they plan to beat it. If the cancer cell escapes from the breast, and it often does before any treatment, no matter what you do, you will die.  No matter how much of a good positive attitude you have. Talking about survivors and how hard they fought just makes those who lost love ones, through no less fight and no less positive attitude, feel awful. Doctors will tell you a good attitude helps, and I'm sure it does on a spiritual and emotional level. But as far as curing you, it doesn't account for the cure.

Oh, I wish he had actually said "raising whatever" - LOL. (I think he said "raising the dead"?)

I think James is going to be gone sooner than everyone is imagining. This is not based on any inside info. I just feel that, like Ken Jennings, he will have a bad bit of luck at some point. Maybe betting big on a DD, being wrong, and then not being able to catch up because someone else gets the other DDs.

I was trying not to respond to @Bliss because I’m sure her heart is true and her feelings are genuine and I didn’t want to make her feel badly.  However, now that I’ve seen so many respond in comments which are similar to my thoughts, I’m going to jump in.

I'm a very, very grateful long-term survivor. I credit my survival to the fact that I called the doctor the day I felt the lump (instead of waiting for it to go away) and to the hard work, dedication and big brains of those in the medical and science professions that preceded my diagnosis.  And to a tremendous amount of great luck

Like all of you, I’ve known many survivors and many who didn’t make it.  I don't think any of them were less loved than I was.  They had varying degrees of positivity, depending upon their prognoses, their pain levels, who and what they were leaving behind, their ages and their varied personality types.  They all fought hard to win the war, but not all of them were able to.

It’s great to have a positive attitude if you can, but it’s not easy.  All my doctors wanted all their patients to have a great attitude, not because it prolonged life but because it made the experience less miserable for all involved, most importantly the patient.  And for the loved ones of the patient, as well.  I love my family more than anything and it was horrific to put them through it.  My good attitude helped them feel better, helped them believe there could be a positive outcome, helped them cope. But there is no medical claim that it can actually be effective as a treatment

If being the recipient of the love of others and having a positive attitude towards being so ill were a cure, no would would ever die.  I grieve the thought that those who didn’t make it are perceived by some as having not fought hard enough, or having not been loved enough.  They were no less loved than I was.  But they were less lucky.

That is great news about Alex but I hope he attributed it to modern science, his doctors and his treatment facility. Many, many people who die from cancer have goodwill and love and think positive thoughts. The power of love didn't help them to beat cancer.

Note that I worded my post carefully to include the word "partially". This isn't an either/or situation - Alex needs both medicine and healing energy - and I'm positive Alex is grateful for every person involved in his healing process, be they top-notch specialists or J!-fans who send him love via the internet.

Science is fantastic. I'm a huge fan of science. I just happen to be a huger fan of love and its power.

I do not profess to state that love heals all... and yet think about the absence of love and its implications: if there's no love, why bother living in the first place? Heavy question.

"The power of love didn't help them to beat cancer"... interesting comment. The power of love may not have helped those who have died to beat cancer... and how do we know that for sure? Love may have made their extremely difficult journey less so. (Given the harsh reality that we are all going to die eventually, seems a no-brainer to leave having given and received as much love as possible.)

My point is that if we ALL adopted a kinder, more loving attitude, who knows what changes in our world might happen?! Give peace a chance... imagine... etc.

Thank you for the bolded comments - I strive to be a better person today than I was yesterday... sometimes I win.

I put in italics your comment about making me feel badly. There is nothing in your post making me feel badly; in fact, I agree with you completely, until I read "those who didn't make it are perceived by some as having not fought hard enough... not been loved enough." Those words made me feel ill. I don't know a soul who's ever voiced such a vile opinion. Who has the right to judge another's fight? Who's to judge love? Nobody I know.

I belong to the "Will you march against war? No. However, I will march for peace." club. I guess my thoughts never go into certain places (I cannot see photos of abuse).

My apologies if my post was misinterpreted in any way - it's so obvious to me that we all need to step up our act in the LOVE category if we want this planet to survive. To me, Alex's comments were words of gratitude, a noble attribute. Just because there's no scientific model full of data doesn't mean 'it' doesn't exist... just means it hasn't been experienced by some. Talking about it doesn't make it happen. Doing it does.

Bottom line: LOVE one another.

Bonus: Watch what happens.

Go Alex! Go James!

When I saw the category for FJ, I thought for sure I'd miss it -- I don't know much about national anthems!  But then when the clue was revealed, I thought for a second, discarding Germany as too obvious, plus I have absolutely no idea when Germany split into East and West, and randomly chose Austria.  I'm going to thank The Sound of Music for that one.

So very tired of James.

I got the TS of captain and am pretty shocked that Mr. Sports guy James missed that.

I also got FJ while second guessing myself the entire time.  Thankfully I didn't have another answer to put in its place. I just thought it was wrong because it seemed to obvious.  I have to stop worrying about that.

I did horribly in double jeopardy.  Just awful.  I know nothing about tea. Probably because I don't like it.  I hit myself over th eMLK date category. But, I think by that time I was just frustrated. And I was a year off on Anne Frank's death date.  Which I knew, because I've always thought how close she was to making it to the end of the war. Now, I'm crying as I always do whenever anyone brings up Anne Frank.

Can I just ask if anybody else knew the date of Shakespeare's birth/death? I got it immediately because it is also my mom's birthday, but if not for that, I can't imagine how in the world I would ever have remembered that bit of trivia.

Got FJ today for the first time in a while because I somehow remembered that Haydn is Austrian 🙂

I've been reading the Ring of Fire book series by Eric Flint. Short intro - a sphere, centered on a small town in West Virginia in 2000, six miles in diameter, is scooped up in time and space and deposited in the middle of Germany in the middle of the Thirty Years War.  The West Virginians decide to start the American Revolution 150 years early.

At any rate, this week's book mentions the 1797 hymn that the Americans brought back, the tune Austria by Joseph Haydn, that became of a favorite of the Holy Roman Emperor in 1633.

Bingo! Instant Final Jeopardy!

I got FJ because, quite frankly, I associate Austria with Hitler. I thought for sure I was wrong.

I think others have said it, and I kind of couldn’t believe it’s true, but it really does seem like James eases up sometimes when he’s really far ahead to give the other contestants some confidence and sense of accomplishment.

Megan was over on the Jeopardy subreddit and gave some interesting tidbits:

This was the first episode filmed after Alex’s announcement.

On the shuttle over, someone made a joke about hoping they weren’t about to play another Ken Jennings.  LOL

Megan is a huge tea drinker/fan and was thrilled tea was a category

Her impression of James was that he is an introvert having to act extroverted and this stressed him.   But when they chatted one on one he was very nice.

I had a dream last night that a contestant beat James by $1 and he was not very excited/happy about it.  the scores were $52,000, $52,001, and $0.  The girl on the end bet it all on FJ and got it wrong.  We'll see if I'm psychic. Spoiler alert: I'm not.

I think I'm in the minority here now but I'm still a James fan, and continue to be impressed with the depth and breadth of his knowledge. I guess if you know a little German (I don't) this question might have been easy - "This African country is known in German as Elfenbeinküste" - but I didn't have a clue and was blown away that he knew it was Ivory Coast  (among all the other answers that he knew!). I thought it interesting that, when he got the DD in the Fill in Their Dates category, he said it was a hard category and so he bet a mere $5,000.

The fill in category was hard.  I didn't know Shakespeares birth/death date.  But then they love Shakespeare on this show, that is one category if you are going to compete, you should just binge everything about him.  Or the year that Queen Elizabeth died, think that was one too.  I guessed 1600

For some reason I knew Shakespeare's birthday.  It's one of those interesting trivia facts that he died on his birthday, and somehow I remembered that it was April 23.

Fun fact: Germany's national anthem also has music by Haydn--the same music, in fact!  But I knew the answer couldn't be Germany, because they actually didn't change the music.  They still use the same music as Deutschland Uber Alles.  They call it the Deutschlandlied (Song of Germany) now, and use different lyrics, but the music is the same.  And of course, Haydn's music never had anything to do with Nazis, anyway.

This is the impression I've always gotten in the interview sections, and the awkward lingering-camera moments when they announce the x-day champion, with x-dollars. I think this is why he does the miming ... it's a long time to stand there and smile, trying to look pleased but not smug, or to look serious but not ungrateful. I enjoyed that he said he couldn't top Megan's story and they should just skip him - and Alex did!

Even when they're just announcing your name, town and profession, it's a long time to stand there smiling unnaturally.

@Booney we've got a James thread on this page so the fans and the haters don't drive each other crazy.

So they played the Dates thread from the bottom up, and the first 3 were TS. Then James hit the DD on the $800 clue and bet low because he had struggled with the category, only to find a cupcake clue. If he had played the $400 clue first, he would have had an easy clue first and then had the confidence to wager more for the DD.

I am most kicking myself for missing the "Alexander and the..." clue. That book title is used as a thread title on the Duggars forum, I'm there every day almost as often as I am here, and I still forgot to add "very bad" when I answered.

I did guess correctly on Haydn being Austrian.  Was more just educated guess though.  Vienna was a huge cultural center, I didn't think he was german, knew he was not French, Italian or English.  seemed based on his name Austria was most likely.

I think the show is messing with our minds. They showed James standing there looking puzzled and concerned and then Megan looking the same and suddenly starting to write something, but too late. It made me think James was stumped by FJ. Instead, James had written down the correct answer before the camera was on him.  Of course, it wouldn't have made any difference in the outcome, since it was a runaway, but it would show a crack in James' armor.

Yeah, I was also a bit slow to remember kuste = coast, which is actually one of the few German words I actually know (all the German I know, I learned from X Company). Of course, James was so quick that he had figured it out and moved on by the time I got there 😉

I don't see how he's ever going to lose because by the end of Double Jeopardy he's already ahead by 20 or 30 thousand dollars with the other two people with a thou or two apiece.  He never bets it all in final jeopardy, so I think this is going to NEVER STOP.......

I want my show back NOW and I want it back like it used to be with regular people competing against each other good-naturedly....

The only way he'll lose is if another contestant gets all 3 daily doubles, bets big and gets them right.  Maybe even if James gets the DD in the first round, that would still work.  Or, if James bets big on the last DD and gets it wrong.  Those are literally the only chances that anyone has to beat him.  There has been one game where he did not hit any DDs, so it can be done.

The first round DD does not matter as much.  You can overcome that one.  Typically that is $1-4K, not small change but also not enough to be a huge difference maker

Its really the second round DD.  Some combination of :

James gets them both and misses

Or

He gets one and misses, someone else gets the other and bets big, gets it correct

Or

Someone else gets both, bets big and gets them right

It was impressive, but his father is a 77- year old German immigrant (Juergen Klaus Holzhauer), and it's likely that James knows at least some German. I recall that when he responded to a clue with "what is Volkswagen?" he pronounced it in the German fashion.  He may also know Japanese, given his oft-told story about telling his Japanese grandmother that he'd be on Jeopardy someday, and she didn't speak much English.  I'm just speculating here,  but I do think he was able to immediately decipher Ivory Coast because of his background.

Exactly. At the time, there were 2 co-champions and a new contestant. The new contestant (who, of course, was first) told a very long story about how she almost got kicked out of a museum for taking pictures with a flash. After she finished, Alex said "we have no time for anyone one else" and promptly went back to Jeopardy, skipping the co-champs.

For all of you James "haters", I was struck by something that Pat McAfee said on his podcast. He stated that he could not understand the haters because if one goes on a game show, you go on to win! You don't just go on to say, "I was on Jeopardy"(or whatever show). They discussed hunting for DDs...how that is not illegal, just not normally done. To me, James is approaching the game to win and combined with his speed and knowledge, that is what he is doing. Runaway games have happened before, just not regularly but that is not James' fault. We have seen a couple games where he was challenged but there is the opportunity each and every day for someone else to win....they just don't because they are not fast enough, I won't say not smart enough because everyone has to pass stringent tests before appearing. So for me, I am glued to the television set each day at 2 just to see the phenomenon that James is!

When I saw the category for FJ, I thought for sure I'd miss it -- I don't know much about national anthems!  But then when the clue was revealed, I thought for a second, discarding Germany as too obvious, plus I have absolutely no idea when Germany split into East and West, and randomly chose Austria.  I'm going to thank The Sound of Music for that one,

As the child of an Austrian - who forced us to see Sound of Music way too many times (homesick parent), I hang my head in shame. I was absolutely certain it was Germany. I'll blame it on still having eyes dilated from a late afternoon eye exam. LOL.

I read that book eons ago - I remember loving it. I didn't know there were others.

I got FJ because, quite frankly, I associate Austria with Hitler. I thought for sure I was wrong.

It's funny, I know Hitler was actually an Austrian, but I don't ever associate him with Austria. Weird.

Yikes! Active shooter situation in our city municipal complex (apparently resolved, it appears),  then major storms coming through the area. Not looking good for Jeopardy!  Count my blessings, I guess 😞

As a city municipal worker, my hair rose on my neck reading that. I hope it was happily resolved. I often check out the entrances, exits, and potential hiding places in my work area, just to be sure (not a new habit, oddly enough).

Our DVR only recorded Double Jeopardy last night, but it was enough. First thing we did, though, was see how far James was ahead.

Resolved, but unfortunately not so happily.
