Josiah and Lauren: He Has To Marry Somebody

I just watched some new wedding show where the upcoming bride and groom attend 3 weddings and try to guess the cost.  One of the weddings served a plated dinner: fast food chicken and mashed potatoes (think KFC).  The wedding couple apparently ordered enough dinners for everyone, and then plated the food very attractively.  The wedding planner was saying how that was one way to cut down reception costs, and, apparently, the guests were happy with the food.

New to posting but I’ve been lurking since Ashely Madison on and off..(Waves)

The dress isn’t my cup of tea but the cake is just...what I wanted when I was 10.  I think it just drums home how young she is.

Josiah looks just how I thought he’d look!

@ramble--how do you handle eating out with your wheat allergy?  I have a few friends with diagnosed celiac, and they have learned what to eat (and more importantly, what not to eat), but it was a rough road.

I totally agree with those who said you just can't account for everyone's allergies/likes/dislikes when you're inviting the whole town.  If I were to get married now, I wouldn't have dishes of nuts laying around at the reception or have nut-laden dishes.  Mainly for anyone with a server allergy, but also because I literally hate any kind of nut ;)  Those cupcakes just look sad.  They scream Sierra too!

If you have an allergy, let them know in advance. It's pretty unreasonable imo to expect people to cater to any potential allergies that they haven't even been told about.

I'd have to say (as someone with allergies) with a 1000 person crowd, I wouldn't bother mentioning any of my allergies.  Unless I was positive something was safe, I'd just abstain especially at a typical Baptist Duggar reception.  For my kids' weddings, I'm the one with the restaurant staff or caterers going through the lists of things that can't be included and all guests were directed to let me know.  We ordered special plates for two guests at older daughter's wedding due to gluten issues and just an absurdly picky eater, but she's the SIL of the groom so we dealt.  I ended up asking a top tier restaurant to prepare chicken fingers and fries.  ;)

I think Josiah looks more unhappy than Josh did, and what is with those t-shirt wedding dress sleeves?

Clingy and a look of shoot me now didn't work out well for Smugger and Anna, hopefully Josiah and Lauren work out better.

I understand that not everyone has an unlimited wedding budget, and I respect any bride who wants to keep with their modesty standards during their wedding but the T-shirt sleeves look good on no one for a WEDDING. It screams “casual”. Cap sleeves (like Jessa had) or 3/4 (like Jinger) would elevate the dress.

Josh and Anna do look young. I forgot how big Josh’s suit was. At least Josiah’s suit fit him. I don’t know how Josiah feels about Lauren or this marriage quite yet, but I want them to at least LIKE each other, and yes get to know each other these next few months.

I get with 1000 folks invited you can't please everyone, or take everyone's allergies into account.  I have an odd one, although the allergist told me I wasn't allergic via the tests, I was just intolerant of the substance.  Dude, when you're puking your guts out and having dry heaves for hours, semantics are the least of the worries.  And mine is onions.  Yea, that's right, onions.  Onion powder and onion salt are fine, and for some crazy reason dried onions in like a spaghetti sauce are ok, but cook something with fresh onions - like many soups and dishes that start with the holy trinity and I'm sick as a dog.  So I always assume when I go to events like this, I might need to shove a protein bar or 2 in my purse.  I once went to a wedding around 15 years ago and it turned out the entire menu was vegetarian and vegan.  I poked my head in to the kitchen to ask about onions and they were horrified.  I was able to eat the pita bread that was for the hummus and other dip and the cake and that was it.  Everything else on the buffet had fresh onions.  We stopped at the first fast food restaurant we saw on the way home. LOL

I don't get sick but my throat gets itchy, but for me this is fresh coconut. Coconut water, coconut milk, coconut oil ... they all seem to be okay, but fresh coconut makes me want to rip out my throat. I'm not sure about any cooked or dried coconut though, because I'm too afraid to try.

Best I can figure is there's something in the protein structure of the coconut flesh itself that isn't in the other parts. Maybe it's similar for you and onions; when they're dried or pulverized the protein structure is destroyed.

That picture of Smuggar and Ofsmuggar was taken the day after their wedding (they were married at 7 at night in central Florida, and he's wearing a wedding ring here). I've always thought of that expression as his "look at me, I've had sex" face. In all the other post-wedding pictures, he positioned his left hand to show his wedding ring.

They took their photos with attendants before the ceremony, but sans rings.

I am also intolerant to fresh onions, but I can eat them cooked.  There are way too many recipes that use onions.  It took me forever to realize that onions were the cause of my heartburn.  Why should I be getting heartburn so bad I wanted out of my misery from a salad?

OK, I'm not sure this is an appropriate question but I just have to ask.  Now with Joe and Josiah married and JD courting, do the boys in this family even have an idea of what naked females look like?  I mean the girls were all changing diapers and giving baths so they had seen naked boy babies and young boys, but I don't think the boys in the family were changing diapers.  So, um, are they like frantically googling pictures of women or how to have sex with a woman from the bathroom on their wedding night or does JD keep a Playboy or Penthouse in a safe somewhere to show them the night before they get married?  I figure Josh was finding porn at an early age because, well, Josh.

I, too, break out in huge hives when I eat any wheat.  Wheat has not been too hard for me to avoid; I order hamburgers without the bun, skip the bread and any thing breaded.  I read labels, and don't eat any processed foods.  I make my own bread using a variety of rice flours.  It has become very easy for me to say "no, thank you" when in a group situation.  Unfortunately, I have the same "welty" reaction to asparagus, and I live in the asparagus capital of the world.  And I love it!  Every restaurant around here serves it when it is in season.  I have to remember to be very specific when I eat out.  What has been a surprise to me is how many restaurants just pick the croutons off the salad when I request that they leave them off.  Do they not realize that the bread crumbs have already contaminated the salad?  Again, I have to be very specific.

That's what Dr. Wheat's book is for. Smuganna listened to it as they drove off to their hotel on their wedding night. It apparently doesn't cover proper etiquette. Remember Anna struggling with the luggage?

I remember Ofsmuggar pulling one suitcase, but not "struggling" with it. Douchey husband aside.

Much like @CalicoKitty said it’s a lot of avoidance. It took some education for me to truly understand where all wheat can hide. (Chili, French fries & so many cosmetics, etc) I was allergic as a child and supposedly outgrew it only for it to return when I got older. Personally I think my body sort of suppressed it and finally the stress wore out my suppression ability. I don’t eat out a lot but when I’m do I lean toward salads or burgers sans bun. With low carb eating being popular it’s easier than it used to be to request bread free without an issue.

Back to the newly, hopefully happy, couple. I don’t mind her dress at all. I tend to like more simple designs after looking back at my 1980s fiasco. Imagine every stereotype of the 80s and that was my dress. I was in my twenties when I got married. I can only imagine what monstrosity I might have dreamed up as a completely sheltered from the world teen.

When Josiah mentioned "slowing down" for a year, I took that to mean that they've been under intense pressure to get married without really knowing each other.  How can you get to know each other when you're always been babysat by one or two of your younger siblings? How he's going to do that without the pressure of work is interesting.  I wonder if he'll take his share of show money and take a year off.  I think it also means they are going to wait to have kids for at least a year.

In the video his body language is completely off, granted they'd only been allowed to kiss for the past 5 minutes or so but when you compare it to the John David video where he and his girlfriend are glowing, it's just bizarre to see Lauren clinging to him while he keeps his hands clasped together.  They should be holding hands or he should have his arm around her and be able to crack a smile.

How sad.

As far as the reception goes, it is actually easier to accommodate guests with dietary restrictions if you ACTUALLY GIVE THEM A MEAL.  The reception venue for my daughter's wedding asked us if any guests had allergies or restrictions.  We were able to feed everyone and we were not charged extra for the special meals.

I am going to a wedding later this summer.  The mother of the bride is gluten-free, so the WHOLE MEAL will be gluten-free.  A bit extreme, but it's not my day...

Poor Josiah did not look happy and excited in those photos.  I wonder if, besides the reasons that have already been mentioned, the very real possibility of a honeymoon baby is weighing on his mind. He may not be ready to be a dad, but can't summon up the courage to do something to prevent it.

He's probably afraid of that very thing, after Joe and Kendra, Joy and Nostrils, and Jill and Derelict all had honeymoon babies, and Smuggar and Ofsmuggar and Jessa and Ben had within-a-few-months-of-marriage babies. I wonder if Josiah managed to have a conversation with his brother-in-law Jeremy sometime recently.

Jinger and Jeremy got pregnant very quickly after the first year of marriage = some type of family planning, plan some of us thought they were on so at first I thought it was a Duggar daughter thing to get pregnant quickly, but it happened to Joe and Kendra too. JD might not want to have babies so fast either; Josiah, JD, and Jeremy/Jinger should set up a conference call of some sort.

Josiah is the headship, presumably - isn't that how it works now that he is married? - so what's to stop him from doing something about it?

I saw some interesting posts on FJ that I think are particularly apt and am bringing over here to comment on.

Quote

For some reason I always had a bit of fondness for Josiah. I think it dates back to when he was very young, and he used to do talking heads in which he was quite articulate, observant, and even witty. He also had a fashion sense I didn't ever see in his older brothers.

So this wedding makes me a bit sad, because it probably represents his enmeshment in the cult and how hard it will be for him to have the kind of life I would have wanted for the young boy I watched years ago.

I know we can't necessarily read someone's state of mind from photos. But his words and his body language in the TLC video are very distressing. I noticed of course that Lauren is snuggled in to his body, leaning towards him, and (as everybody has commented) gripping his arm. But he just doesn't seem to reciprocate. At all. I would have thought he would be holding her hand, or have his arm around her. Or maybe just sort of lean into her.

Past footage of him has seemed to suggest he is not introverted or shy ordinarily. If he had been uncomfortable on camera in the past, I would understand. But he's had years of being filmed--practically grew up being filmed and talking to the camera.

When he turns to Lauren, I thought he was going to say how lucky he is to have married her, or how beautiful she is. But instead he says he is "thankful"--not for her, but "for family."

The other feature of the video that puzzles me is that he talks about "slowing down ... on as much work stuff as I can." But (other than maybe John-David) it has never seemed as if the Duggar men work all that hard. The way Josiah describes it, one would think he has been doing really stressful work and putting in 60-hour weeks. Has he??

In any case, while I don't doubt it's important for him to take the time to get to know the woman he has married, how many people outside of the Duggars can slow down their lives just because they got married?? Obviously there's the honeymoon, and that's a break from work. But everyone I know has to keep working, just as hard or even harder, after they marry, especially if they have career ambitions, or if they simply aspire (as in my own family) to a better life than they were raised with.

It just seems rather privileged to be able to be able to "slow down" because you're married. Shouldn't Josiah, who is now the sole provider, be expecting to work hard, to support all the blessings that they expect to come their way?

I wonder if we read between the lines, the "slowing down" Josiah mentions isn't so much about work (because, as above, what "work" does he have to speak of really?) but a subconscious reference to his entire relationship experience with Lauren?

Quote

Their engagement announcement video was off. As she gazed in scripted devotion to him, he used distancing language to describe how he knew she was the one:

"It came upon you, just like, she's the one. This is it. I could tell that we'd work well together, serve well together and yeah, just something that came upon you."

Im not seeing the warmth or excitement that John David shows toward his woman.

Josiah has indeed been shown in his talking heads to be one of the more articulate Duggars from an early age, so for this quote to have come out of him just signifies to me what little connection he actually feels to Lauren. The "this is it" is likely an accurate reflection of what he was thinking about the whole affair, though.

Another thing someone pointed out was that the color of Josiah's tie was more appropriate for a funeral than a wedding. I have no idea how accurate this is, but if it is true, this would be another unconscious indication of Josiah's true feelings toward the marriage.

In one of the articles about the wedding, PEOPLE, or TLC, it was stated Josiah wore a bow tie with his suit. I guess it was written up in advance, and then he switched to a regular tie.

I looked this up because I associate Milagro with bean field but I looked it up to find it is Miracle in Spanish but what was funny is it is associated with the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Miracles, and also the name of the little charms we wicked heathen ebil Catholics tend to use. Maybe Si should stock up on some of those.

I'd say Anna and Josh, and Kendra and Joe.  I also think Jinger is more enamored of Jeremy than he is to her. To me, it's like he chose Jinger because she feeds his ego, thinks he hung the moon and stars, and he feels he can mold her into what he wants. He made a calculated choice for someone like her, rather than educated co-eds he'd probably dated in college--that he'd slept with. He got himself, a subservient, and moldable virgin.

No, she's not. Milagros is actually the name Spanish speakers use, not Milagro. People named Milagros are named after the Virgin Mary (Nuestra Señora de los Milagros/ Our Lady of Miracles.) I think Lauren's parents tried to spice up her boring name with a Spanish middle name.

LOL

This. I think what bothers me is the lack of VARIETY. Sure, strawberry allergies aren't as common as, say, shellfish or nut allergies, and most people probably like them, but who literally serves one thing? As another poster said above, the best way to accommodate everyone is to serve a meal. Even if the caterers don't ask about dietary restrictions, there is simply a larger variety of food. For example, my sister was a picky eater as a kid, and I'll never forget when like 6 people gave her their rolls at my cousin's wedding! May not have been the most nutritious meal, but she ate. ? Likewise, someone with a food sensitivity might end up with an unbalanced meal, but could probably find something within a meal setting that would fill them up. Also, I don't have a ton of sympathy for these people nor being able to afford a meal, or at least some kind of decent snack like deli trays. Can't afford it? Don't invite 1,000 extraneous people. These weddings are an excuse for JB to show off in front of his friends, who are such famewhores and suck ups that they don't mind the fact that the duggars aren't hospitable.

@Lunera thank you for explaining the name.  As to whether Lauren is of hispanic/spanish descent, (I think that was what was being asked) it's hard to say for sure. It's possible she has/had a Spanish grandparent/great-grandparent.  America is a melting pot and people intermarry.

I think Josiah will feel the need to have a baby ASAP if to do nothing but prove he’s having sexual relations with his wife.

JESUS!  Could he try harder not to touch her?????!!!!!  That is one resigned fella.  He is not into that season of life.  Dude, just lay back and think of Giselle OR Tom, whichever gets your motor running.  We know it isn't Lauren.

That video of Josiah and Lauren was taken just a few minutes after the wedding.  What was Josiah thinking about?  Marjorie Jackson.  He says, "I've  made a priority years ago, just for my first year of marriage especially, [to] slow down on as much work stuff as I can and really focus on a relationship with each other."

Three years ago the 18-year-old Josiah was courting 17-year-old Marjorie.  That's when he "made a priority" for his first year of marriage.  Lauren knows that she is not Josiah's first choice for a wife, but she probably expected to be the sole focus of his thoughts on her wedding day.  I predict that these two are not going to live happily ever after.

I think Josiah will feel the need to have a baby ASAP if to do nothing but prove he’s having sexual relations with his wife.

This whole marriage feels like a show or something he’s supposed to do.   Having a baby is the next step to prove that he’s a man and following God *cough* JB’s plan!

Sure, lest L'Eden calls him out as a gender traitor and he ends up on The Wall back at Alert ahem at Jesus Jail ala Josh.

I think what the kidults that are dependent on JB & Michelle do or don't want is immaterial.  Most of us assume his courting of Marjorie crashed and burned on HER say so.  Could be Josiah just didn't care at this point.  As the title of this thread points out, he has to marry somebody.  Lauren was just a willing sacrifice.

I don't know anything about Marjorie or their breakup.  Does anyone have any details?  Was it abrupt?  A surprise?

Lauren is the oldest of 8 kids, her father, Dwain, is a minister who founded some sort of mens' ministry.  He also has a lawncare/landscaping business.  I think it is a safe bet that his income is not that high and they are financially 'uncomfortable'.

The breakup was sudden for those of us following here.  They announced the courtship and, then, a few months later, we heard that Marjorie had called it off.  It was right after Josh' scandal broke and there was speculation that she just didn't want to be associated with the Duggars; but we don't really know.

Pickles has new pictures of the "happy couple." The worst pictures I have ever seen. No love just pure awkward moments between two strangers.

Now that I'm home I searched for more pictures but had zero success. At least with the other weddings we have seen a small stream of pictures coming out. Josiah's wedding is just different on a whole new level of weird!

Noticed his suit/tie right away. Suit looks great and is tailored which is unlike the Duggars usually. But a long black tie? First I thought he’d go with a bow tie since he has the personality to pull it off. Second he’s the most fashion conscious of the brothers so you’d think he’d realize that even if the groomsmen are wearing black ties, the groom doesn’t. Usually grooms go with a white tie or a happy fun color (which the groomsmen match). He knew this. Was he in - I don’t care let’s just get it over with - mode when planning?

Yes cereality, I agree that the groom does not match his groomsmen, but most likely wears a white/ivory tie to 'match' the bride...or he wears a different color all together...popular choice: grey/silver ties for grooms. I think this sums up how Josiah felt about this whole marriage-right-now situation....and wore a black funeral tie.
