Joy and Austin: This One Time At Family Camp

To me cold is cold and hot is hot. When I go to FL my FL family complains about the heat because its hot, just as they complain about the heat back home in New England. When I go to Buffalo, NY my NY family complains about the cold and snow because the cold and snow are pains in the ass, just like the cold and snow are pains in the ass in New England. Just because they're used to it doesn't mean they like it any more than someone who is not used to it.

Joy, along with her sisters, are known for making poor parenting decisions so to me it isn't a leap to say they're dressing their kids wrong for the elements. Its not like we see just that one kid always underdressed. Its random kids at random times. We've seen Giddy and Evy bundled up, we've seen Izzy and Sammy bundled up and we've seen the Seewald kids bundled up. But we've also seen these kids underdressed and freezing, whether at the beach with no towels, being forced to bathe in an ice cold creek or being kept too long at an outdoor light festival in the winter.

Temperature isn't the only factor. If it was sunny and not windy the kids would be feeling warm running around in a hoodie and long sleeved top.

Time of season also matters. When it first gets cool in the fall 60 degree weather feels colder than it does in late winter when the body has acclimated itself. I walk out now in calm 40 degree weather and think "it's warm today."

If Joy had a short sleeved top on, and was not running around (likely), yes a jacket was called for.

Gideon probably started out with shoes, got some pebbles in them, and yanked them off. He could scrape himself with the shovel, but the chance of cutting toe off is minimal 🩹.

I'm not so worried about whether he is hot or cold.  He's old enough to speak up if he's uncomfortable and can probably remove his own hoodie, maybe even put it on without help. The kid should not be outside, standing on gravel and using a shovel while barefoot.  That should be a rule and Joy should enforce it and stress safety first.  Just more evidence that she doesn't do this ever.

Joy had disgusting, filthy dirty feet when she went on her first (maybe) date with Austin.  She dug some horrible looking, well-worn shoes out of the communal closet, and I was surprised that they would allow showing the dirt-black soles of her feet.  Just ick.

That scene is marked in my head, same as Jessa and her diaper mountain.

Look we are all human beings, we all get dirty and have bodily functions- but Joy with those FILTHY FEET made me cringe. It wasn’t as if she was barefoot doing chores, running back and forth outside (I don’t know why you wouldn’t wear slippers but I digress) and was about to hop in the shower to get ready. She was going to leave her house on a DATE with her feet PITCH BLACK. Like how do you not feel that scum on the bottom of your feet?? How are you going out in public like that?

I mean, this is a woman who has shared pictures of their home with loaded guns sitting out within kids’ reach multiple times . . . 🥲

When Joy was flailing about looking for a certain shoe, the Duggar shoe bin was filled dirty shoes - probably from putting dirty feet in them. I'm gagging as I type this because I can't imagine putting my bare feet into dirty shoes period, but in someone else's - EWW.

I'm gagging right there with you! I imagine every Duggar household smelling like gross dirty feet. It seems the bottom of their feet are never clean, adults and kids.

Did you ever watch where they "cleaned" the floors with that swiffer wet jet?  I think those things just push the dirt around and give the illusion of clean. Can't change the pad after one pass over an area so dirt collects and spreads.  Imagine if they wore socks - those would be black too.  Compounded with their ahem, hygiene.

Joy's latest video.  Pay no attention to the title.  They don't even discuss moving to L.A.  It's just clickbait.

As soon as I saw the title I knew they wouldn’t even discuss the possibility in this video. She’s trying so hard to copy Carlin’s ridiculous click-baity style.

To be fair, a lot of Youtube videos have click-bait titles. It might even be recommended by YT as a way to increase views.

Is putting a rug over a carpet a thing?

Sure, why not? I have a patterened area rug in my living room that goes over the boring tan carpet (i rent the hosue so I can't change the carpet). It breaks up the room and adds character. I've seen lots of people do that.

I had large area rugs on top of the carpet in the dining room and living room at my old house.  But mine were thick, heavy wool rugs that did not wrinkle or turn up at the corners.  Actually, I loved the wool rugs, and have them on hard floor now.  If my cat had to throw up, I always hoped she would do it on the wool rug.  Wool rugs clean up so easily with no staining.  Synthetic fiber carpet stains.  But this rug that Joy has on carpet is very thin and wrinkled.  It is a tripping hazard.

(Off topic but related to rugs on carpet.  In my old house I had new carpet put in.  The carpet guys were not even out of my driveway, and both cats had thrown up on the new carpet.  I wish they were on the wool rugs, because I had stains on the brand new carpet that never really came out completely.)

She looks cute. Looks like she borrowed some maternity jeans from a taller person. Not that I blame her, maternity clothing is expensive. Of the women I know that didn’t need nice suits for court (or other professional appearances), they got 2-3 pairs of maternity pants and did oversized tops/leggings, or if they were lucky and visibly pregnant in the summer, dresses.

Joy leads a pretty casual life, so in her outfit is ideal.

The same woman who went through how many hours? of at-home labor and attempted at-home delivery, without actual medical supervision, before going to the hospital, where she had an immediate emergency Caesarean.

Thinking isn't her strong suit. Neither is the most basic level of common sense.

She's being seen by a high risk doctor now, so no more stupid laboring for a day before realizing your kid is breech.

Maternity clothes would almost always be an expense since they don't accrue value no matter how many pregnancies they are worn.  I'd guess the cheap ones make it through only one or two pregnancies and the mid range through possibly three depending on how often they're worn.

Joy is likely buying a few midrange pieces but most are from Walmart and resale shops.  As often as she may be pregnant, this is one area where maybe buying a few Walmart tops and some medium price maternity jeans works.  She's going to be so sick of the same few tops at the end of the pregnancy she may never want to see them again or as large as she gets they may be stretched out and only good for the last couple of months on reuse.

Sorry to say that it doesn't sound like Joy and Austin are giving little Gideon any speech therapy. I could hardly understand him. He sounded 2 years behind to me. Evie should also be lined up for this as she has a pronounced lisp. Henry Seewald also needs to be brought up to par on his situation. It seems to me that these parents don't really care about their childrens' needs. Makes me sad for them. I hope Gideon enjoyed his birthday celebrations.

I work with kids who have just turned 5. Gideon is far behind them verbally.

As I have posted before, our local public school system did wonders with my son from age 3 to age 5....all services were free to us, thank God. My son, now 31, gives great motivational speeches in front of hundreds of people with excellent diction. It's such a shame that Joy and Jessa don't help their sons excel. Their potential will never be realized, as for all of the children in this family.

I had speech therapy as a child and it’s the best thing that ever happened to me.
On the minus side, I always missed my math class on therapy days so even though I speak clearly and have worked in radio, I can’t do math worth a damn!

My son had it. He said d for th, so like dese, dem, dose...... he sounded like he should be in a gangster movie.

He liked it because the speech teacher always gave him candy. I met her once and she looked just like Kristin Davis from Sex and the City. I even told her. She had no idea who I was talking about (and this was about 20 years ago!).

I don't know if these people would consider speech therapy. They probably think that Jesus will cure it. No, Jesus gives us intelligent people who can help us with out problems.

No structure with these people whatsoever. The only one I can see having structure are Jeremy and Jinger. I don't know why but I can see him having their day planned out.

Jessa took Henry to a speech therapist on the show. Who knows if she followed up, but Henry's speech still seems delayed. She might have taken him a few times, saw some initial results, and decided he was cured.

I hope someone can get through to Joy. No clue how close she is with Jessa these days.

I'm really surprised that speech issues are something that aren't getting dealt with. I don't like, but I can see how math, reading, science, social studies etc aren't a priority because dad or their fathers in laws will give them stuff to do in exchange for money (either actual money or dad pays the bills, it's still not clear) and as for the rest, Jesus and KJV take care of it. But being a preacher is the pinnacle of Funny achievement. So why aren't they making sure the boys can actually talk?

Giddy was also seen by a specialist. IIRC, he has some type of auditory processing disorder in addition to speech issues. I wouldn't be surprised if he had ADHD too.

I don't think Joy understands the enormity of the problem.

I've wondered about ADHD myself after seeing how often he's running around and being very disruptive in videos.

I think JB & Meech are content enough with the daughters marrying preachers, but it doesn't seem they're interested in that as a career for the sons.  They appear to steer them to hands-on jobs.

They really aren't capable of doing anything that requires commitment or consistency (see the endless string of disappearing kittens and puppies).

It's possible that Joy has some sort of exercises she's supposed to practice with Gideon, but they just never get done. It's far more important for her to create more children than it is to care for the ones she already has.

IDK, but look at the Rodrigues boys

And travel cross country during a pandemic while heavily pregnant.
