Galileo908 October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 (edited) Cold Open: "Let's get this nightmare over with." Yeah, they couldn't avoid the trainwreck that was the debate. And next week will (thankfully) be the last one. Once again, this was a really succinct tl;dr of the actual debate. And of course their inevitable take on Ken Bone was great (Bobby playing him was perfect). Monologue: Another goddamn song, but this one had puppies. Escorts: Silly. Melaniade: Apparently this was a parody of a video from Lemonade. This was an interesting one, loved it when Mike Pence showed up. I wonder if this is the culmination of the Melania Moments runner? Qua: This had to be written from experience. At first I laughed that everyone got up to leave...and then everyone in the room worked on the movie except Vanessa Bayer. CHONK: I have a feeling that CHONK's logo being in the same font as Kohl's was intentional. Gotta love the "normal clothes" bit with the men. WU: Once again, the SNL writers can do nothing more than show Trump's actual words to show how ridiculous he is. "This election is like Up: It got sad really fast." Vanessa's kid actor character is kinda wearing thin, until she said this: "Billy Bush said some bad things, and my mom said he might get $10 million! FROM THIS NETWORK!" Now formally apologize for having Trump host and you'll be all set, show. Burger King: This one was weird. Good weird. Once again Bobby was the best part. Not enough Bobby, show. The Sink: Funny, weird, and short. Robots: Silly and weird. Don't know if the robot voices dropping at points was intentional, but even if it wasn't it helped pull the bit off. I wish they went violent, though. (EDIT: Major points for Emily almost making KATE break) Melania Moments: "The Housemaid": Weird, and too short. The Great British Bake Off: Meh. This was a little tough to sit through. You'd think a spoof of this show would be...better. And not saved for the 12:50 slot. Hamsters: A very weird, silly one act play. (EDIT: I was thinking that this was a good spoof of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and I'm glad that everyone else thought so.) It's not all that odd to say that the writers tend to treat a Hot Female Host as a bye week...and this time was no exception. Watch next week's ep with Tom Hanks be amazing. vb68 October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 (edited) I really enjoyed the episode. I think maybe like Emily said right upfront in the monologue, I was ready for some fun and silliness. Loved the Jaws theme in the debate sketch, That was perfect. And I know I'm a minority on this, but singing monologues don't bother me. It was fun and over fast. Sue me. ( Just kidding, please don't.) I thought Emily was a good host. I'm not sure she had a lot of stand out moments, but she really blended in well with the cast. She was pretty versatile and fit like a glove. New guys Charlie and Alex Moffat were all over the place. I think they are breaking the new guy curse. Play all the utility roles you can. That video with the Trump women was awesome , especially all the Tiffany jokes. I thought it would had been even more accurate if Donald couldn't remember her name, though. Update was fantastic. Che's Michael Jackson joke reminded me of Norm. That's a good thing. And Laura Parsons was on fire auditioning for Mary Poppins with Emily ( great indirect use of your host) and calling out NBC for the Billy Bush payout. Laura is actually pretty hip and well informed. Anthony Crispino should get his news from her. Heh. Gen X reference alert- the Robot sketch reminded me of a Sid and Marty Krofft Saturday morning show with Jim Nabors and Ruth Buzzi playing malfunctioning robots called The Lost Saucer. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf with hamsters? Heh. Wonder how much alcohol and projection went into that. I'm just happy there was no storm and I saw the show straight through. And oh yeah, epic entrance for Bruno Mars. You can tell he has Friend of the Show status. Not just any music guest would get that. They like him. They really like him. MerBearHou October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 I adore Emily Blunt AND Bruno Mars so was pumped for this show. Nothing knocked my socks off but I did giggle at Cronk -- the voice and their disturbed reactions were very funny to me -- and all of the characters in the Burger King limo. Really loved Bruno's entrance and first song. Emily looked incredible in the monologue -- wow. This is an unpopular statement but I just don't see that Leslie Jones has any range at all in her acting/comedy ability. 3 Link to comment
AdorkableSars October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 Yay for more Vanessa this episode! She's the bomb! Thought she was super funny as the only audience member for that short film. Her exasperation with each question she had to ask had me cracking up. "Dammit." I thought Emily Blunt did a great job tonight. She was game for anything - and there were a lot of weird sketches tonight! I especially liked her in the escort sketch. And the Burger King sketch, which was kind of dumb, but I laughed a lot anyways. The newbies are getting alot of airtime, and I ain't even mad. Mikey, Alex, and Melissa, have all impressed me a lot so far...almost lessening the blow of missing Taran and Jay. Almost. WU was pretty good. At this point, they could probably just roll tape of Trump saying anything, and just film Jost and Che's reaction shots, and it would be funny. The guests tonight were great too. Always love Olya. So happy for her and the dog! ;) And Laura Parsons is one of my favorite recurring Update guests, and tonight was no exception. Quote Laura is actually pretty hip and well informed. Anthony Crispino should get his news from her. Heh. Wow...I never knew I wanted this until now. Laura Parsons and Anthony Crispino should appear on Update together at some point. Make it happen, show! Bruno Mars...was perfection. Didn't expect anything less. I adore him. Glad he showed up in a sketch too! SOOOO flippin' excited for Tom Hanks next week. 3 Link to comment

VCRTracking October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 (edited) Wow, that episode was like a whole show full of "12:55 sketches"! I have to give credit to Emily Blunt. Not only was she relaxed live, has a good singing voice, made Kate McKinnon BREAK, but she obviously had to OK those skits she was in. She had to be like "Sure, I'll play a robot waitress" and "I'll do the voice of a sink having an existential crisis" and "You want me to play a hamster reenacting Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? No problem!" She has to have a weird sense of humor and I love that. The Lemonade parody with Trump's women was amazing. I admit to not keeping up with current pop but somebody forwarded me Bruno Mars' latest "24K Magic" video and I thought it was great. Very retro sounding and fun. The Trump stalking was funny too. I wondered how they were going to handle red sweater guy turning out to be a twisted fuck. The pay off was more in Update than in the cold opening, but they still addressed it. I like Laura Parsons. Peace 47 October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 Melaniade was amazing! They had the Beyoncé video look down stone cold, and the lyrics were perfect. I've rewatched that 2x this morning already. I thought the debate sketch was better than the first and really, really solid. They did a particularly good job of sending up the inane undecided voter questions, like Kyle's question modeled on the real question of "Say something nice about the other candidate." When they played the Jaws theme, I have to say that I half-expected also to hear Tic-Tacs shaking in light of their Weekend Update joke last week about how when women hear Tic Tacs shaking now, it's going to sound like the Jaws theme to them. 8 Link to comment

Ms Blue Jay October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 I really liked it. I thought Emily did a really great job and the "Sorry" video using the Trump women was fantastic. "Sorry" by Beyonce is one of my favourite songs and videos of the year so I thought that was great. I only got bored towards the last two sketches of the night. The monologue was fine and I was already laughing at Emily and Leslie being the two escorts -- Leslie calling the show THE Family Guy and imitating Stewie Griffin. LOL! 6 Link to comment
SeanC October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 The video of all the Trump ladies (and Mike Pence) reminded me: Hillary doesn't really have much of a supporting cast on this show. Emily Blunt was an excellent host. She reminds me of Chris Hemsworth in a way - an actor/actress who's not necessarily known as a comedian who completely embraces the most absurd sketches and gives them their all. I loved the running gag that all the weird monologues and short films were starring actual Emily Blunt. She fit right in AND she made Kate break? Kudos Emily Blunt. I know it's early in the season, but the new cast members are fantastic. This might be the best new class of featured players since Aidy and Cecily joined in 2012 (I also liked Tim Robinson, but I was in the minority on that). They also must really trust Mikey and Alex, because they have them anchoring a lot of sketches. WU was great once again. Loved "that wouldn't be my first choice for a defense. The problem was that you weren't her choice period" and Che's "...And the worst place for young girls to live is on your hard drive. I said worst!!" And Vanessa's Laura Parsons was hysterical to me. I lost my shit at "BEST CASE SCENARIO: YOURE MOLESTED!" and "HE SAID HE LIKED HER BUTTHOLE!!" Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe by way of drunk hamsters was one of the strangest things I've ever seen, but for some reason, it struck me as absolutely hilarious. Alec is just so spot on as Trump. Mumbles October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 Really loved this episode. IMO the weakest sketch was the escort sketch early on, but I watched the show out of order so I knew there was good stuff coming up. But that said it was great to see Leslie doing something other than screaming lady. Quote Burger King: This one was weird. Good weird. Once again Bobby was the best part. Not enough Bobby, show. This was my favorite of the night because it was so absurd. Tacky stretch limo full of pretentious downtown art types, each getting weirder and weirder, getting fast food. I have no idea how they came up with it but I applaud whoever did. I loved the British Bake-off because they got Sue, Mel and Mary spot-on, and it gently parodied the show in that the show usually has such sweet, mild-mannered contestants you could forget that the U.K. does have its share of mean and tacky people. I think Vanessa Bayer is one of the most valuable players on this show. She can do anything - lead, supporting, straight woman. Hated the WU joke about rednecks fighting wars. At first I appreciated that they were calling out Clinton for using the classist term, and then they just made it worse by implying that rednecks are good fighters because they're mean and ignorant. But I hate these two doing WU anyway. Bruno Mars was awesome and I'm not even a fan. 3 Link to comment
Negritude October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 Loved the reveal that Emily was playing herself in the short fim sketch. Melaniade was awesome. Laura Parsons on WU had me guffawing as always and yes Vanessa is one of the MVP's of the show. The sink thing caught me off guard and had me rolling as I too think those sinks are kind of ridiculous. Oh and I also covet that leather dress Sasheer had on in the Chonk commercial (another highlight). I'm digging this retro 90s R&B vibe Bruno Mars is coming with. 2 Link to comment

Update was funny, except for Laura Parsons, who is just too repetitive for me to like. Apparently Trump wants SNL cancelled because they're rigging the election with Alec Baldwin's lousy impression of him. So the show is doing something right at least. It only took 1 year to go from "I can't believe I get to host" to "off with their heads!" But overall this was a meh episode to me. It's because the movie trailer starts out with a screen that says something like "Are you having trouble dealing with the stress of this election?" which thematically fit right into what Emily Blunt just said. I assumed they were interrupting the monologue for a breaking news type sketch, sort of like what they did in the VP debate sketch last week. But it was only halfway through the movie trailer that I realized there was no audience laughter in the background and it was an actual commercial, not a commercial/monologue sketch. possibilities October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 I absolutely loved this episode! I thought almost everything was funny! This almost never happens. Might be one of my favorite episodes of SNL ever. I guess I like "the weird stuff". Didn't like the Michael Jackson joke on WU, and wasn't really a fan of the escorts sketch. WU in general was kind of a mixed bag this week, and it's rare that I don't think it's one of the best parts of the show, but this time not only was the rest of the show very much to my tastes, but I thought some of WU really missed the mark. LOOOOOVED WAoVW/Hamster edition, sink with an identity crisis (especially the gurgle/choke she did as the water went down and she resumed speaking), Chonk (featuring normal clothes for guys), the cold open debate, Melaniade, Melania looking for a body double so she can escape and "feel sand," Laura Parsons calling out NBC-- all of these were great. I also enjoyed Qua, Honda robots, and Burger King, though they weren't my faves-- though Emily breaking Kate was awesome, even though I usually don't like it when cast members break. On the fence about the Bake-off spoof (I've watched the show a few times but the sketch was just kind of so-so for me). I almost always ff the musical guest but I stuck around for Bruno Mars and had a great time doing so. I don't mind musical monologues at all and I really liked this one. Of course the Cold Open was fantastic. Once again Trump doesn't know what he's talking about because Alec Baldwin is excellent as Drumpf. Turning his lurking into the Jaws shark was just perfect. So so funny. And the Hillary jokes were very good too. "I'm made of steel. This is nothing. Hi, girls!" "I love how generous he is. Just last Friday he handed me this election." Bobby was just right as Ken Bone. Hee. The monologue was fine. The escorts skit was ok. I thought the guys were going to turn out to be Donald Jr and Eric Trump. I think what I enjoyed most here was Emily cracking herself up. Melaniade was so so good. I'll have to rewatch. The ending was great with all the women once again eagerly following him. The short film festival skit was also good, esp for Vanessa's performance. CHONK was great. I'm laughing now just thinking about it. Aidy was the best in it. Burger King was weird. I loved all the weird characters. Hard to say who my favorite was. Maybe Beck the ventriloquist. The Sink was weird and wonderful. I wonder who pitched that. I wanted to like the Great British Bake Off skit more than I did. Cecily and Emily did great voices, but sometimes I couldn't understand them. Melissa was perfect as Sue. The hamsters a la Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf was another one where they must have been smoking when they came up with it. I enjoyed it, but for some reason it was more interesting than funny. Maybe next week will be stronger. 1 Link to comment
ruby24 October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 (edited) Hillary actually has quite a lot of high profile surrogates that are out there campaigning for her. There's Bill of course, but also Obama, Michelle, Bernie, Biden. They could do a sketch with all those people if they wanted, but they'd have to bring a lot of former cast members back. I think they should do that though- it'd be kind of cool to see all of them on the stage at once. Kate as Hillary, Darrell as Bill, Jay as Obama, Larry David as Bernie, Jason Sudeikis as Biden, and probably Sasheer as Michelle I guess (they never bothered to make a character for Michelle all these years). They could be having some sort of group meeting where everyone's trying to help make Hillary more likable or giving her all their own separate advice and she keeps getting irritated, etc. Something like that. catrox14 October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 I liked all of it. I have a mad girl-crush on Emily Blunt so she can do no wrong in my eyes. I laughed at least once or twice during every skit and Weekend Update so that's a good episode for me. I don't care for the Disney newscaster but it still made me laugh. I think Bruno Mars is a ton of fun and I love funk so it was good for me! 1 Link to comment
Kromm October 16, 2016 Share October 16, 2016 Kate McKinnon's Mary Berry was SO good it almost made up for how bad everything else in that Bake Off sketch was. 2 Link to comment
