Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

Message added by Scarlett45

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

While we understand the frustration (change is never easy), please keep in mind that not everyone feels the same way and that for those members who don't, the ongoing conversation about other forums and chat options can equally be a cause of frustration.

Out of respect for your fellow posters, we kindly ask that you continue any discussion about alternatives via PM or the Technically Speaking: Bugs, Questions, & Suggestions area.

I had read the comments from the person claiming to be a TA in Derrick's law school who may be a total fake. One thing they mentioned was Derrick's belief that the Death Penalty would be an appropriate punishment for abortion and then I see this out of Texas:

of course Kim is rich and can buy her diploma.

I heard about Kim this morning and from what I saw Kim has a tough road ahead of her.  Apparently California has one of the most difficult bar exams and the pass rate for people in her position(no law school, just a 4 year internship)  is 3%.  She is most likely going to fail and I applaud her efforts.

Honestly, I'd rather see some sort of settlement that has Lori donating a shit ton of money to scholarships for needy kids. I really don't want my tax dollars going towards her upkeep in a Federal prison.

Part of me agrees, but then I read that  many poor, and/or minority, parents are in jail for years for falsifying their address to get their children in better schools. It doesn’t seem fair that they go to prison while the rich parents can buy their way out. It’s a quandary.

In CA one doesn't have to go to law school, you can apprentice and take some tests and then you have to take the bar.  The bar here is pretty hard from what I heard.  I am NOT a Kardashian fan but I have no beef with this.  If she is putting in the time and taking the same tests as those that went to law school I say good for her.  I find it a better use of her time than taking photos of her ass.  Her actual ass, not her husband.

I want jail time.  Lots of jail time.  At least more than the folks who do as you say to get their kids into better schools.  With all of their resources they still have to cheat their way in lets me know college should have never been in their future.  Then I want a HUGE fine that will set up scholarships.

Okay, here's my beef with "Primetimer..."

It's absolutely ten minutes ago, and while it would have worked up until about 2015 or so, it's absolutely what we should want to stay away from, because the way people are watching TV is changing so rapidly! Twenty years ago, people mostly watched Primetime, as there wasn't much else on throughout the day. Now, for the first time ever, Primetime isn't really a draw anymore. We have shows coming out completely on Netflix, new shows airing at 10 or 11 pm, and SO many people opting to watch movies, or binge watch old shows, on streaming platforms. Even people who DO watch traditional prime time shows often use things like on demand, DVR, or apps to do so.

It's like naming a site about cell phones "The Blackberry." It's SO far from being cutting edge, and in fact what we are moving away from. It's so dated that it shouldn't have made it past round one.

So. Stupid.

Haha yes. I’ve been into a show that airs every Wednesday at midnight on Hulu.

Exactly.  Right now I am  playing an episode of Railroad Alaska from 2013, which is in my Amazon Prime cloud,  via Roku which I've been using forever,  just because.  While I am going from multiple websites online, on a tablet, checking on weather, scores, news and other whatnot.  And I am 66, not some millennial.

Clueless decision.

Weight update: this morning I went to my gynecologist for my annual exam, and I talked to him about my weight. That doctor I saw back in October just did the same thing they always do...tested my thyroid and sent me a letter saying it was normal, with no other course of action. I have a good relationship with my gyno, so I figured I'd mention it to him. He pulled up my weight history, and was horrified!!! It was a steep curve up, but has leveled off...I have fluctuated between the same pound for a year! He said he has never seen anyone gain like this except for steroid or antidepressant patients! He suggested going to the doctor I grew up with, who has more experience than the new doctor I was going to, and see if he can refer me to a specialist, either a nutritionist or an endocrinologist, whichever he thinks is best. He said he would love to see how I did on a metabolic test, and to see if my metabolism was normal for my age. He said most of his patients find it a little harder to maintain their weight at 30, but nothing like this! It's like my metabolism aged 20-30 years overnight!

i feel vindicated that he was so shocked and horrified. Obviously it's not normal! I think that the doctor I had seen, who was right out of medical school, and also happened to be a really skinny woman, ran the tests, but just didn't know what to do beyond that, or realize how unusual it was. I'm glad someone with more experience, and who knows me better, was able to take a look at that.

he said worst case scenario, my metabolism just died, and I'll have to figure out (with doctors) what to eat to lose weight. That sounds terrifying! I already eat really clean, so I can totally see it being, like, one leaf of lettuce a day. Ugh. I wish that I could lose it as fast as I gained, and I really hope I have some condition that can be treated!

Wow, that is depressing for sure.  You have a journey ahead of you finding the right doctor - back when, I had thyroid issues that no one took seriously enough to consider any but the one treatment and I lucked into an endocrinologist who took my hand in his, looked me in the eye (I was crying because I felt so bad and no one was helping me) and said "There are a lot of things to try and we will try all of them til we find one that works for you". And he did.  So, just like kissing a lot of frogs to find the handsome prince, you will have to kiss a lot of doctors until you find the right prince or princess.  Wishing you luck on your journey and please keep us posted.

Awwwww thanks Lookeyloo!!! He suggested that an endocrinologist might be the way to go, and he couldn't decide whether he would send me there or to a nutritionist first, so he said he'd let a general practitioner make that call.  I'm thinking an endo would be more useful! It seems so likely to have something to do with hormones, and it's just so weird!

The craziest thing was that after I told him about it, he pulled up my weight chart, which had my visits with him and other doctors. You could literally see it...it was steady until it basically shot up in a vertical line, and then stayed steady!!!

And get this...between October 2016 and February 2017, I gained 30 pounds! But...I had another appointment TWO WEEKS LATER, in March 2017. I GAINED TEN POUNDS BETWEEN THE APPOINTMENTS!!!! Then he had no more data until March 2018, when I had gained 10 more pounds (though I suspect those were gained pretty quickly after march 2017; since about may or June 2017, I have worn the same size). TEN POUNDS IN TWO WEEKS! I'm so glad I have that documented! There is absolutely nothing I could have eaten in that time to gain almost a pound a day! He was literally bowled over, and said, "I have never, ever seen rapid weight gain like this outside of people taking steroid meds!" He said it was even more extreme than antidepressants usually are!

i just want to get back to my old self so badly! Right after it happened, I dreaded seeing myself in mirrors, because I didn't look like myself. For a long time, I was skinny in my mind, and it was a hard reality to face. It was like whiplash, because my brain never had time to adjust to my new reality! Now, it's kind of the opposite. I purposely avoid pictures of myself back then, because it's too depressing to see how I looked before the weight gain! At least now, it's been two and a half years. Imagine how it felt to look back at pictures taken six months ago, when you were skinny, and now you're obese! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

And thankfully I only look overweight, but medically, I am obese. Yikes!

What kind of insurance do you have? most will let you make appointments directly with a specialist so you wouldn’t necessarily have to see your GP. I am unemployed myself so have crappy insurance, so the hardest part is finding a doctor with openings who will take my insurance

i get it. i am SO grossly overweight after having spent my life on the thin side. i have gained 100 pounds over a two year span approximately. during that time my health took a dump, exercise was not possible...not even walking very far. now, i cant breath when i exercise but they keep telling me to lose weight. i eat gluten free and although i do eat too many carbs, i feel like i walk enough to compensate. i bought a fitbit and i am now following my steps and also working at physical therapy two days a week. GAH!!!!

I can empathize with this and with @Christina87.  For me it was over about 5 years, but I also gained about 100 lbs. I finally started to lose a little weight and then got a terrible upper respiratory infection and had to go on several rounds of steroids and gained the weight back. Of course it doesn’t want to come back off. It doesn’t help that I have arthritis and can barely walk these days. I need to see an endocrinologist and start swimming.

@zoomama and @EVS, thanks for sharing your stories! I hate that it happened to you, though. It's so crazy, because peoples' weight usually stays pretty steady, and maybe creeps up over a lifetime unless you stop it. We have all gained enough for a lifetime! I totally understand about thinking your diet and activity level are reasonable, too. I've been eating the same way I always have (which is pretty healthy just due to my migraines, with very little processed food), and exercising regularly. It sucks to hear society scream that obesity is your fault, because you have no self-control!

@DangerousMinds I'm in the exact same position as you, unfortunately. Since I don't have a job right now, I also have crappy insurance, and I feel like the process of finding a doctor is going to be nerve wracking!

Glad you're getting some answers, Christina! I remember you posting about the sudden weight gain. I'm certainly no medical professional, but it sure did sound like something was going on.

Personally, I gained about 80 pounds over the course of a couple of years due to depression, injuries, sickness, and stress. I've always eaten my feelings since childhood, but all that prevented me from walking it off like I had in the past. I've lost 20-30 pounds of it over the past couple of years but still have a long way to go.

I guess the one silver lining is I am already built a bit like a tank--my brother always told me I had linebacker shoulders, and it's true; I have sturdier shoulders than most men I know 😂--so even though I'm clearly overweight, it's not really obvious how overweight I am until people find out my weight.

I had told myself this was the year I was going to lose that last 50-60 pounds, but that ain't happening. I have actually exercised a few times this week, so baby steps, I guess. 🙂

I have been listening to podcasts of people who are allegedly in "the know" and also reading, and apparently we have to get our food intake correct before exercise will work to lose weight.  Eat less, then move more.  Exercise alone won't do it, so they say, which has also been my experience, sadly.  I am still contending with the ring of fat around my midsection as a result of breast cancer drugs, which according to every blog and piece of information I find, since it suppresses estrogen, most women are left with it, no matter what.  I guess starvation, literally, would be the only thing to work.  I go to the gym 5 times a week and do weights and cardio and watch carbs and eat healthy.  So, I feel good, but still have that ring of fat.  Discouraging for sure.  I am also hypothyroid, controlled with meds, but, even then, the weight does not just fall off.

I also had to sign back in yesterday.  The site just went down for me for several minutes.  It did that yesterday, too.

I keep having to sign back in as well, almost every time, and again whenever I go to the home page. It's getting annoying.

As far as this being a "snark" site, now that I think of it, this is the only show of the ones I follow here (the others are Supernatural and The Magicians) which really deals in snark anyway. I guess it's because the Duggars are so eminently snarkable, but it had just never really occurred to me that while we tend to have some fun at their expense, the pages for those other shows seem to consist of earnest conversation about them. And even we have at least as much serious discussion as snark - analysis of what goes on in these families and whatnot. It's just that none of us seem to be actual fans of the Duggars and their way of life.

I suppose there may have been the occasional person here who might have wanted to defend them, but they don't seem to stick around.

YES!!!! You hit the nail on the head here. And not even just the doctors, but society. When I found out I was obese, I realized I was now one of those hated people who are accused of being so unhealthy and running up medical bills for everyone. I realized that some people were going to look at me and sneer, thinking I eat a solid diet of McDonald's and cakes. I realized that if I talked about my actual eating habits, instead of getting admiration, I would get skepticism. And I realized that although I eat way better now than I did while skinny, people thought that girl was healthy and hot, but not me! It's so depressing. My most unhealthy period was right before I gained the weight, where I was at my lowest weight but having daily migraines (along with constant dizziness, fatigue, and eye distortions), losing 25% of my hair, had an iron deficiency that left me unable to stand for a decent period, and was getting sick all the time. THAT person was frail and sickly. Now I'm healthy as a horse, but just can't lose this damn weight!

I've started doing low carb during the week (I still eat carbs on the weekend because life without pasta and cake is not worth living). Ive lost 11 pounds in about a month, but I can't tell a difference. My clothes are just slightly looser. I would probably lose more if I went total low carb but that wouldn't be fun for me.

Hearing typical results like this makes me realize even more how bad my problem is. I tried this about a year ago, but lost zero pounds. I stuck to a very strict diet during the week, with basically no carbs except what you naturally get in vegetables, and had one cheat day on the weekend. I still stayed gluten free on the cheat days, too! I liked how determined I felt, and how much willpower I was using, but got discouraged after about two or three months of losing...literally...nothing. I also think I do best with some carbs. I've tried to make them healthy carbs, like small servings of whole grain rice, or oatmeal, as opposed to pasta or chips (except as a treat!). But still, I'm losing nothing. I used to eat pasta almost nightly about five years ago. How can your body change that much so suddenly? I went through a phase of grilling chicken with Parmesan cheese, and eating it with ranch noodles, almost every day, as well as baking constantly. I was an ideal weight then, and "hot." I feel like I have aged thirty years in the last two, metabolism wise. I never thought that body would just be taken like that. If I can figure out what's wrong and get it back, I'll never take it for granted again!

I do not know why it bugs me when I watch The Price is Right, but I hate it when people take their time going down to bid by stopping to hug and shake hands. It drives me crazy! I think my sinuses are on their every two weeks I will act up trip and taking my allergies along for the ride. Throw in hypothyroid, and I will be not fun to be around. I see the endocrinologist Friday morning. I should ask him what over the counter med I can take for the allergies/sinuses along with the over the counter Claritin I take on a daily basis because I feel like crap.

I am suffering terribly this year with seasonal allergies.  Also hypothyroid. I tried claritin a month, zyrtec a month and have better luck with Allerest.  Also there is an over the counter drop for the eyes if you are able to take it, Zaditor, which my eye doctor recommended (but I'm not sure about what your eyes can take) which is like putting allergy drops right in your eyes and really does help me, so maybe you can ask and this could be an option for you.

  • Useful 1

I have to be careful what I can take because it can make me sleepy and can affect my eyes. My eye doctor recommended Refresh Optive Mega-3 lubricant eye drops and Refresh Repair. I also have to be careful with eye drops because certain eye drops can make my dry eyes worse. I also use my eye mask to help out. Best $25 I ever spent. I have the prescription eye ointment in case of a possible eye infection, and I use the eye lid cleaning foam my eye doctor suggested. A small bottle is $12 and last for a year. My eye doctor is the best and makes great suggestion.

That's tough Christina, I'd definitely find a GOOD endocrinologist.  Do you have a teaching hospital near by?  They tend to be up on things more, imo, and are more able to treat the whole person.  Many also have a nutritionist, who can assist.  Before your appointment, I would keep a food journal of all foods you eat and times, to take with you.  That way, you can show them why you think something is off with thyroid or other hormones.  I have hypothyroidism and meds work great for me. I got on the right dose immediately and it's worked great. I went from total exhaustion to feeling normal again, but, I can say that I didn't notice much in the way of weight loss.  (Also have you checked your blood sugar?( I see Endo for thyroid and Type I diabetes.

Does anyone know how to ENLARGE THE PRINT ON THIS SITE NOW? It's much smaller than it used to be.  I can't find a way to do do it.

Since you are so knowledgeable about eye drops, I need some advice!  I have never put any sort of eye drops in my eyes and now I have a prescription eye drop that I must put in nightly.

I just got diagnosed with glacouma, hence the drops.  And being so unused to it. I'm not doing it well.  Sometimes I even miss my eyeballs!

Do you have a hint on getting the drops into my eyes, and also, I feel it going down my throat and it really grosses me out.

Do you look it up on the internet for suggestions. I usually look at the directions and ask my eye doctor or pharmacist which way is the best way to do. I tilt my head back and use a finger to gently push down or lower the lower eye lid while looking up at the ceiling and gently tap on the eye drop bottle to put one or two drops in each eye. I am blind as a bat when I cannot see, so sometimes I do not tilt my head all the way back to put the drops in. And I could suggest washing your hands before and after using the drops and have a Kleenex close by in case you put in too much drops in either eye. You may want to ask your eye doctor about an eye mask or to use a eye lid cleanser because it can help with dirt, pollen or other things that can affect your eye lids leading to other eye problems.
