Agree - all the girls' hair needs some serious trimming, shaping and conditioning - Jill's most of all. I'm sure even the little girls need trimming. Is there some rule about cutting the hair of females? I know some world cultures strictly prohibit it. Or is it just another creepy Gothard teaching?

IIRC, I think it was Gothard who said the feminine ideal includes long curly hair. Which is great if you have the right hair type for it and that's how you want your hair, not because some creepy old guy said that's what women should look like. Plus I doubt Jim Bob would pay for them to go to a salon, or good products for them to use at home.  *sigh*

I can't believe I looked this up, but I did.  "Gothard demanded that girls style their hair wavy—not straight or curly—because “wavy hair is attractive and becoming—it causes you to focus on the woman’s face instead of her body.” Gothard’s approved wavy hairstyle is meant, she said, “to attract men to your bright eyes, which will attract them to God, instead of your body.”

The guy's a perv and has a whole population of girls/women making their hair wavy to satisfy his aesthetic, which is a kind way of saying it.  He's sexually attracted to wavy hair, so his followers must have it.  That's beyond disgusting, IMO.

The good news is that I've seen the Duggar girls with perfectly straight hair.  Jana's wore hers straight as recently as the last episode in which we saw her and didn't see her.  Joy has straight hair.

I know Jessa uses Paul Mitchell hair spray which isn't cheap. I thought the Duggars were supposed to be frugal?

I was watching a couple of videos earlier on about them reminiscing about earlier years. I did notice how vain at least some of these girls (read, Jessa) have become. They/she were laughing about their admittedly hideous dresses and hairstyles.

So really, they are just like everybody else, perhaps more uneducated and somewhat bigoted, but they don't differentiate from normal people all that much, no matter how much their crazy Mother tries to pretend that they do

I think if the Duggar girls hacked off 6-8 inches of dead hair, added some layers and dimension, ditched the cheap bronzer and black eyeliner (way too harsh for daytime, Jinger) and obtained some decent footwear, they'd be good to go.

They're probably getting the counterfeit/expired stuff at a low end beauty supply.

Thanks for googling that, DamWrite. I guess someone needs to tell the Duggars that crunchy fried straggly curls are not the same thing as wavy. Unless their headship aka JimBob has decreed he likes it fried and straggly and crunchy...

I must be very sheltered. I did not know there was counterfeit Paul Mitchell hair spray. Purses, shoes, etc, yes. But hair spray???

I know they sell legit Paul Mitchell hair products at CVS & Wal Mart. They are still expensive though; close to $20 for shampoo/ hair spray. I guess for the millionaire Duggars, that's not alot of change. My issue with this is don't claim to be frugal and buy $20 name brand hair spray.

So because I have straight hair I'm inviting guys to look at my butt? Wow that guy is special.

I try not to judge the Duggars based on appearances, but I do not understand why the girls/women wear flip flops all the time. It's one thing if that's what is less expensive for them and it's what's comfy...but it makes me cringe when they wear them to places where their toes could get trampled. It should be common sense!

One thing I also don't get is the way Michelle does her hair. She could still be able to wear it down and wavy if that's what they prefer as far as femininity or personal preference, but do it more like how her daughters do. Granted, the older girls' hair can look scraggly or unhealthy at times, but at least it is flattering and modern enough. I remember when Michelle got that makeover, her hair was a breath of fresh air!! And Michelle actually is very pretty.

Well we all know what happened the last time Meechelle was considered pretty. We don't want a nation of men leaving their wives for her since now she is seen on teevee. So maybe it's for the best that she goes around looking as she does.

I guess I don't know that story. Someone actually left his wife in hopes of being with Mechelle? When was this? And more importantly, how have the Duggars kept it from the front pages?

Michelle tells a story of her youth that while wearing a bathing suit or short shorts and mowing/working in the front yard as an example or how she might have defrauded a married neighbor. I don't have a link to her actual words but its been repeated here many times and in some retellings the couple divorced. That's more or less the story.

So, if I'm getting the gist of this story, Mechelle thinks her teenage "immodesty" was too much for this married neighbor? That she and her hot little bod tempted this guy beyond all reason? And caused his marriage to breakup? Wow. If this truly is her thinking, she has A - a MIGHTY fine opinion of herself and B - a fertile imagination [no pun intended]. Good grief.

Not only has Michelle told this cautionary tale, she truly believes it even though I can guarantee that no neighbor came over to tell her what a hussy she was and how she broke up a marriage.

That's some strong delusion of hotness there.

That's how it came across to posters here and at TWOP. I never saw the exact quote or if I did I've forgotten but I'll give her the benefit of possibly just trying to come up with an example of how someone might be defrauded. I suspect she was a bit smug in her telling of the story which is why its been snarked on so many times.

Wow. Just - wow. She is one amazing piece of work...

Michelle in her own words:

I told my kids, (growing up) I mowed the lawn in a bikini and had no idea what I was doing to my neighbor's husband across the street. No wonder the woman hated our family — you know? And, I think I had no clue as far as the responsibility I had in that the way I dressed caused men to have struggles.

Speaking of Michelle's hair....  In the recent photos of her on the mission trip, she seems to be missing the hair pieces and her hair is much less thick.  It looks extremely dry and damaged in a couple of the photos and it isn't crispy.  That makes me think it's more her natural hair.  Does anyone know how she styles her hair for the super crispy look since it doesn't seem to be a perm.  Could the curls all be hair pieces?

Her hair in the pictures doesn't look as fluffy as usual. Others have mentioned hair pieces & I'm going with that.

I laugh every time I see the Kayak travel commercial where the lady is sitting in front of her computer with the 80's puffed up hair. During the commercial she keeps shaking it & it turns into a modern day style. I think of MEchelle every time I see it. They should have used her instead.

I would think that the insurance company for the church that sponsors those mission trips would require the participants to have proper clothing and footwear for the areas they will be in and for the work being done to avoid injury and liability. Having said that, if all the participants do as this family does on these missions, like Christmas parties, and trips to the beach,, well, I guess flairy skirts, long unrestrained hair and flip flops would do.

Yes I think of that toooooo! Jesus please lay it on your heart to show MEchelle a new way to live i.e. a modern haircut, newer clothes that don't scream I just got out of bed and new age appropriate shoes! Amen.

Someone wrote... "...The book is controversial because several kids have died by parents saying they followed the Pearl's techniques...."

[snip] Personally, I want more details [snip] (such as) "...according to Aug 2014 google , there was a family in Macon, Georgia, (or wherever) who was found guilty..." That is far more responsible and direct.

I do not agree with Duggar's child-rearing because I feel it falls more on the sisters' shoulders to raise Michelle's and Jim-Bob's kids, and especially since these girls were never given a choice in the matter. Marriage and raising a family should not be the only 'career choice'. As well, judging by the television series', Michelle is very naive and ignorant of many worldly issues and I question her ability to teach/instruct children beyond grade 7.

Mimionthebeach - I LOVE your name/handle/avatar ! : ) Lol, It brings back fun memories of a great song.

Jessa posted a video on her instagram of Joy doing some squats in the gym.  She was wearing a skirt over pants.  What is the point of that?  There were a lot of comments on the video from lunatic people explaining that the skirts are for modesty but how is a skirt more modest than pants?  Why the skirt OVER the pants?  I just don't even understand.

Does Gothard ever mention what the masculine ideal should be?

The gym is filled with sweaty, un christ like, immodest people. Joy is probably traumatized with all the shirtless guys on the treadmill. She also looks ridiculous

Skirts arent necessarily more modest. I know that older, more conservative Christians want the females to not dress masculine, and pants are considered masculine.

The logic comes from the old testement of the bible I believe (the same old testement that says your aren't supposed to shave ot wear two different kinds of fabric at once) women are supposed to dress feminine and men masculine.

I believe that these rules don't technically apply to Christians in the 21st century, because they wweren't really gods commandments, more of the laws of the land back then.

(I hope I didn't de-rail this thread, and I'm not much of a bible scholar anyway, so what I said should be taken with a grain of salt.)

If the Duggars subscribe to the literal passage about women "not wearing armor", then they are insincere in their "thank yous'  to our female military, LEOs, and firefighters, all of whom wear uniforms and defend...why then, did Jana and Jill train to be first responder/firefighters in the first place? Doesn't make sense, but they can't wear pants....??/

Jana and Jill training (and I use the word loosely) for first responder/firefighting was a cover up to keep an eye on the boys to make sure they were not defrauded by hussies while going on calls.
