 I am both impressed and saddened that I immediately knew what video they were parodying.  I have no idea how this became a skit because this video wasn't popular enough back in the day to make it on, even though it's totally parody-worthy.

Cold Open: Ben Stiller back as Michael Cohen! And hey, it's Martin Short as Trump's doctor! Loved when they kept cutting to the FBI agents listening. And oh Jesus of course Kate is Giuliani (love that he was on Fox News on commercial), I was expecting Darrell Hammond. And oh my god It's Jimmy Fallon as Mickey Mouse Jared Kushner, that was great. And holy crap, they actually got Stormy Daniels. (I'm betting she introduces Childish Gambino)

and with that out of the way, here's Donald Glover.

Monologue: At least when Childish Gambino sings, I'm okay with it. And was Donald borrow that outfit from Hillary Clinton? Could not get that out of my mind. That payoff with the clarinet was amazing.

Court: Ha, it's about Jurassic World and it just kept getting better. I hope the rest of the show is just Kenan and Donald Glover playing off each other as wacky characters. Sorry, Kel. And holy crap, Donald made KENAN break.

Friendos: THERAPY THERAPY THERAPY. That was great. Lambo.

The Night (I Watched You): Ooh, old school music video (@Maverick, I knew that was referencing something). And hey, it's the bar from the monologue. I really enjoyed this , it just kept getting better.

A Kanye Place: Ha, well that's one way to cover the Kanye crap. "Leave Chrissy Teigan out of this!"

Pillow Talk: Melissa in a sketch again! This was great. I just lost it when Melissa started impersonating Cosby. Like...what?

So Zoe Kravitz introduced Childish Gambino, getting on stage afterwards was a good touch. 

WU: Rudy's Kings of Dementia Comedy Tour sums him up exactly. Someone on Reddit said that Pete Davidson looked like a character on Arthur and I can't unsee that. I liked how Pete's latest rant was about Colin & Che hosting the Emmys. And I was expecting Creepy Mark Zuckerberg to talk about Facebook Dating, and not Leslie Jones, as welcome as she was. Of course her bit ends with Colin, but come on, that was a prime opportunity for ScarJo to pop up.

Che: "Pass." Slayed me.

Lando: Loving Donald as Lando (Lando!) Loved how it was for the Black People In Space (cut to four people), and loved seeing Max Rebo (Rebo!). Really wish Lounge Singer Lando was the sketch, seemed to have been a much better idea.

Barbie: I love how Kenan was so into Barbie, and Donald was so great in this. He played off Kenan amazingly well. "I'm Barbie!" "It's almost Not Night anymore." 

And Daniel Kaluulya introduced Childish Gambino the second time.

Prison: This was good and clever.

Overall, such a good episode! Amy Schumer is next week.

GREAT! It really is all about the writing. I went in with very low expectations and enjoyed every single sketch.

Melissa did that same pillow talk sketch with Aziz Ansari. I found it funnier this time than that time, for some reason.

Not much Kate this week, but Cecily is really coming into her own. It took me a while to recognize that Kate was playing Giuliani-- awesome make up job. They really are committing.

Might be the best episode this season. Took them long enough! I am guessing Glover came in with ideas, because the writers have been dull for many months now, so it was probably not their work.

Stormy looked newvous during the good-nights. I hope everyone was warm and welcoming to her.

That was legit fun all the way through. I really enjoyed it. I think Donald is a great host. He brings his own unique energy. He killed it as far as I'm concerned. (And yeah, Lorne why wasn't he hired in the first place?) Come back anytime Donald!

I could not stop laughing at A Kanye Place. That was perfect.

Che and Jost just slayed it tonight. There were a few lines that just brought the house down in a "OMG! He said that?1?" way. (Che saying he asked Stormy to come out for one. Then "Pass") Having said that, Pete's commentary was a little too meta for me this time. They really needed to promote hosting the Emmys? For one thing, that's not until September.

But otherwise, this is a contender for best show of the season for me.

Perhaps, but Melissa's original claim to fame was doing impressions. She was a semi-finalist on season 6 of America's Got Talent back in 2011.

I thought Donald seemed a little stiff during the monologue, but as soon as it rolled into the Jurassic World trial, he definitely kicked into high gear.  Blood humor is usually not my thing because I’m just that squeamish, but I laughed and laughed when Mikey couldn’t read the not-even-applicable disclaimer that Donald was directing him to because it was soaked in his friend’s / family’s blood.  (Feels very wrong to type that.)

I thought the cold open was, for the most part, a lot of fun (no one in the audience really recognized Martin Short, which was also kind of funny in itself).  But I’m ambivalent about having the real Stormy Daniels on—a porn star who had sex with the president.  It’s not that I’m prudish about it, just wondering what the takeaway is supposed to be.  I’m not making any sense, I guess, but it’s just like, “This is what we’re lending cool kid cred to now?”

It struck me as odd, too. And when she said that porn stars aren't known for their acting ability, I thought, boy she was right. Talk about stiff. 

I laughed when WU said that her attorney had been on only 20 shows after he said he was "speechless." 

It seemed like Weekend Update was on much further into the show than usual. 

The Jurassic World trial and the Kanye Place were my two favorites. Distractions, indeed.

I hear what you're saying. It's definitely odd. I was expecting a parody of her lawyer given how often he's on TV. I'm not really that surprised, though. It's also weirdly consistent for the show given Monica Lewinsky also cameoed back in the day. I know. Different situation, not a porn star, etc.  But I wasn't overjoyed back then.

On a different note, I meant to say that I'm highly amused that Ben Stiller is now in "Friend of the show" status. Not to recount all that back history we've discussed before, but that was not always the case.

NOTHING is normal anymore in today's climate and SNL is no different. When Barbara Bush recently passed, Dana Carvey went on talk shows saying how the Bushes were always kind to him and invited him to perform as George H.W. Bush at the White House. Now we have a President who goes on Twitter to complain about how horrible SNL is. Yes, they want to do the best show they can every week, but I can't help but wonder if trolling the President doesn't play into their decisions. They did the Stormy Daniels cameo perfectly, IMO, because she showed up after a half-dozen other cameos. She'll get the most media attention -- even more if Trump tweets about it in the early hours of tomorrow or Monday -- but she was the surprise ending. When Monica showed up, they did two entire skits based around her.

Part of what's so surreal about everything is that the Trump stuff every week is so wacky that they have to outsource so many people! The opening skit was full of cameos but also used several cast members (Kate, Aidy, Leslie, Cicely, Beck). In the '90s we had John Goodman as Linda Tripp. Now we have Baldwin, Stiller, ScarJo, Fallon, Fred Armisen, John Goodman, and at one point Bill Murray and Robert de Niro as specific characters. Dr. Bornstein is so wacky in real life that it feels like ONLY Martin Short could play him.

This show really was on fire. So many of the skits didn't go where I thought they were and were smart as hell. I loved Kanye Place and Therapy, but I really died at Donald Glover in the existential crisis-themed Barbie sketch. It was just so dark and weird.

Mulaney to Glover is one of the stronger pairings of consecutive new shows in recent memory for SNL. It's a shame they weren't on in consecutive weeks. For my money, they both would have been all timers without the painful cold opens. Not only is there basically no humor in the coldvopen outside dredging Twitter jokes from the week, but the cast gets absolutely sidelined. "Thanks for your hard work and contributions to the show this year, Heidi and Chris, but you'll have to wait a little longer to get in on a "Live from New York." Balwin's doing it again. But it's great this time... instead of Kate's 472nd painful impression accompanying him, it will be Stormy Daniels!"

But no to dwell on the negative...

Donald was great! He seems a touch uncomfortable when he needs to talk about himself in earnest  (pun not intended), but damn if he isn't a performer. Threat, indeed! He and Keenan played so well off each other all night. It was almost Arrested Development style comedy for much of the night with Donald setting up the zany-Ness, followed by a pan to Keenan with the reaction. Chris really got to play too, which was fun.

What threw me about Stormy Daniels was that during the cold open, they let her be self deprecating about her acting ability. Then during WU, they all but called her a greedy racist and it seemed much less friendly. Did she piss someone off between 11:35 and 12:15?

I'd never heard of Childish Gambino, so I assumed it was a different person.

There weren't really any clunkers for me, but there also weren't any sketches that I'm dying to watch again (unlike last ep's lobster sketch). I'd say this episode was adequate.

The Michael Che joke about Stormy's rate going down if she appeared next to him was a dig at the industry, not her. I'm not really sure how it is now, but in the '90s, female porn stars (such as Jenna Jameson) were discouraged to do interracial porn and told it would lower their value. If you did it once, it would then be the only work you could get.

My god, is there anything Donald Glover can’t do?  I thought it was going to be hard to top the Mulaney episode so soon, but Donald Glover was  (unsurprisingly) fantastic. And I need those Childish Gambino songs ASAP; Saturday was a jam.   

There’s already a “Cut for Time” sketch on the SNL app, which I also found funny. Not sure if it’s on their YouTube channel yet, but if it is, I’ll add the link.

Cold Open: That was the most I have enjoyed a cold open in months. I think it was the “around the horn” nature of it, showing all the disasters underway. Plus the cameos. 

Monologue: Watched for a bit, then skipped it. Didn’t seem to be going anywhere. 

Jurrasic Park: Had to skip it, didn’t want any spoilers.

Friendios Rap therapy video: Right out of You’re the Worst. Where’s Shit Stain? I’d buy that song though. 

Raz P Berry: That was based on an actual video from the 80s. Right down to the monologue. Was it called Walking in the Rain? I liked where it went after the mistaken identity. 

A Kanye Place: We all really should care much less about celebrities and headlines. Get on with your lives.

Sexy Time: I love how she goes for it in these skits. The Cosby line was hilarious. 

WU: Starting to add some bite. Good. Pete wears the strangest clothes, and they are too big. Pete should have cited Jost dating ScarJo. Che got the response to Kanye right. Uh, Leslie, those men you dated may have been awful but you picked them, I’m guessing because you liked their looks or their badboyness. That’s usually how it works. Try widening your net. 

Star Wars event: Man, I’m really coming to dislike Star Wars. You’re the only black characters in sci-fi? You really should meet Uhura, Tuvok, Worf, the guy who created warp drive and a bunch of Federation admirals, to start with. 

Barbie: Hmmm. Did Keenan just call Danny Glover “boy?” Waiting for the uproar. Jason’s story was fascinating, about the girl hit by a car. Also, aren’t all those Instagram shots taken too far away?

Childish Gambino does not like to wear a shirt. 

Customer Service: I would welcome convicts doing customer call center service, over the overseas call centers I often get now.

I don't think they have to outsource so many characters. Or at least not because of anything Trump has done. I think it's a combination of a few things - big names being eager to take a shot at Trump while doing Lorne a solid at the same time, the show being willing to go for the cheap "recogntion applause" and laughter, and the fact that the current cast has too many generic white guys and not enough diversity or impression skills so when the newsmakers are older or quirkier they have to go outside the cast (Kate can only do one old Republican hack at a time after all). Plus I think we've reached a point where everyone in the comedy world has realized that if you're not being asked to play anyone in a DOJ or national security position they're going to be gone before too long so you don't have to worry about feeling obligated to keep doing it for years even if you're bored or want to move on like Alec since they will end up being fired or resigning in a few months.

For me I thought Donald seemed extremely relaxed and laid back, almost too much.  I didn't feel a lot of energy I have to admit.  Maybe that's just how he deals with performing live.  Also he released the video for his new single on Twitter DURING the broadcast and it was super duper distracting.  It was a very powerful and crazy video.  I guess he didn't care that some would be watching that instead.

Something funny.  Martin Short and Steve Martin were just on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon a few days ago.  Martin Short compared Jimmy Fallon to Jared Kushner.  Jimmy said "Aw.. thanks a lot" or some similar reaction.  I wonder if the SNL idea was before or after that.

Saddened? This is one of the greatest/funniest talking breakdowns in the history of music (The beginning of Shirley Brown's "Woman to Woman" is a close second). I didn't think SNL did it justice. The original is waaaaayyyy funnier lol.

The cold open was efficient in terms of fitting in all of the characters/strands of this crazy week of news. I don't know if having the real Stormy Daniels there actually enhanced the sketch, since her wooden acting stuck out among all of the better actors there. "Friendos" was funny even if I wasn't familiar with the actual rap group they were parodying - same goes for the 80's music video parody. I wasn't familiar with the original video (although after seeing the link posted above, I might be a bit obsessed now), but even without knowing the source material, it was still funny. Jost/Che were good (smart hard pass on Kanye) but good god, Pete Davidson is useless - both on WU and in any skit. One thing that stood out to me in this episode though, was that it seemed like Cecily Strong was everywhere. I like her, but it seemed unbalanced - she didn't need to be in A Kanye Place, that easily could have been Kate or Heidi in that role.

Cecily is one of my favorite cast members, so I’m good with seeing her as much as possible.  I did wonder if Kate was shooting a movie or something because normally, she is the “star” (for lack of a better word) of the cast with the most airtime, and for the past couple of episodes, it seems like Cecily has been doing both her own normal roles and things Kate would have done.

In the cold open, even though Alex and Chris didn’t really talk, I thought they did a great job with their facial expressions as the wiretapping FBI agents.  I also thought Leslie’s update piece was quite funny.

This doesn't top my TV adopted son Chance's episode, but the cold opening, Friendos, WU, and the talking dirty segments were funny to me. I'm just not feeling DG and his fake wake and Black pride persona. Stay woke, I am Childish Gambino, I am, and that's why we can't really kick it. 

 

Oh the Orange Juice Jones parody (was that his real name?) was also funny. 

 

How could I forgot Che slaying me with... Pass! Slay! Slay! Slay! I had to re-watch twice. That's exactly how I feel about Kanye and everything single song he has ever sang. Pass! I also love the Kanye sketch. 

 

I see it's Oran juice Jones, as a child I thought it was orange juice... I'm going to leave orange juice, I don't want to appear any less knowledgeable than I was as a child. As an adult I know better. ???

This stood out to me, too. I don't have any complaints about Cecily's performances -- they were all good -- but I always wondered why things aren't spread out more. Perhaps it has to do with chemistry w/whoever the host is. I dunno.

In the Barbie sketch, which I loved, I was thinking that Beck would have been much better in the Kenan role. Still, this was one of my fav sketches. The Heidi, Pete, and Donald characters all said funny things. My favorite might be Heidi's, "It's almost not night anymore."

My favorite sketch of the night was Friendos. Man, that was great. I didn't realize it was a parody/takeoff of Migos, but that doesn't matter. It stood on its own.

I can say the same thing about the Razz P Berry video/sketch. Reading here that it was a takeoff of another video was a surprise, but even more was that after watching that video, I see that the sketch very directly used lines from it. Anyway, it was funny. Glover was great in it.

I thought the Jurassic Park trial was pretty good, mainly for Glover's lawyer character. 

Dirty Talk was good. I really like Melissa. Loved when Glover says, "You a little freak," and she responds with, "Yeah, I'm the Elephant Man," doing an impression. That was almost topped by her Cosby Jello Puddin' Pops line.

The CO was something else. Cameos galore. I loved Martin Short as Dr Bornstein. He was typical Martin Short as Jerry Lewis, but it worked for Bornstein. I also loved Fallon as Jared. He was funnier here than in his first appearance.

I'll have to watch Childish Gambino's America video.

My favorite episode of the season is still the John Mulaney one, but I did enjoy A Kanye Place and Friendos/Therapy and the funniest part of WU was the picture of Kanye and Che just saying "Pass". I was underwhelmed with Pete and Leslie's bits on WU, and that sucks because I like them. It seemed like they kept using a lot of the same people more often this episode than they usually do, you'd think the cast only consists of the same 6 people. Maybe it just felt more noticeable this time.

I'm guessing it's an ego thing: the Bushes are secure enough in themselves to just wave off a parody (or at least pretend to do so). 

Thanks for the reminders of Monica Lewinsky's appearances (I had totally forgotten) and also for the links to the original video that they spoofed. That might be my new favorite thing. (And that guy knows how to pronounce "jewelry.")

Interesting points have been made re:  Pete. I think this might be the first new episode since the Emmy host announcement was made.

I forgot to comment on Kate's Rudy Giuliani appearance. I liked it. Much better and more promising than her Mueller and Sessions, though I may change my mind when she does a longer bit.

The monologue was horribly bad, just painful. Maybe that's why I was underwhelmed for the rest of the show. I had heard of Donald Glover, but I an't say I'm familiar with him. And even less familiar was me having heard of Childish Gambino, but I had no clue he's actually Glover. That didn't help my "getting" this host or episode. 

Will someone please get Pete a decent haircut? I'm not sure what's going on with that boy's hair, but it's all bad.

When the dirty talk sketch started I remembered how awkward I thought the Aziz version had been and wondered if they had figured out how to make it work, but it seemed just as awkward this time, with the added confusion of whether Melissa was in a new long-term relationship or if it was a recast of the same boyfriend.

I used to be against all the celebrity cameos ...until last night. I couldn't imagine the cold open topping itself without all the cameos. It's just amazing.

 

That sketch already is approaching 3 million views on YouTube (the meet the parents sketch maxed out at 4.5 million).
