I have a different thought on this subject. I think Jill and the kids are welcome but Derrick won't let them. Also, I think Jill could be on the show, but Derrick prevents that. If he cant, they cant. Remember, he's the boss.

How long has it been since we've seen them celebrating a big occasion with the Duggars? I don't think they were together at Easter, or last Christmas. I know you don't have to celebrate every occasion with your family (with my in-laws we do a casual Christmas meal together and then don't get together again until the following Christmas), but they seem to have been having family celebrations with the Dillards and not the Duggars.

Now, I'd probably prefer the Dillards to the Duggars, but Jill seemed awfully close to her family. This must be difficult for her.

I’ve had the same thoughts, except I’m not sure that Derrick has strictly forbidden them to visit.  I think it’s more of a “I’d rather you didn’t” scenario.

Its not fashion forward by any means but she looks like a vibrant young woman in a casual day during the fall/winter. The jeans are nice (and they fit), I like her boots, her hair is clean and she’s smiling. I’ve worn this exact same outfit many times (although my sweater fits, so you can see I have breasts), but I do love that color burgundy.

First Thanksgiving In Our New Home

We had a great time celebrating Thanksgiving with some friends in our new, cozy little home. The boys were so excited and, this week, Israel kept asking us how many days were left until Thanksgiving. Last night he could hardly sleep and then today when he woke up he was so excited to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade (a Dillard family tradition) and have friends over for a big “Friendsgiving” lunch and fellowship. 

We have so many things to be grateful for everyday and today is a good time to stop and thank the Lord for all of those things, big and small. 

What are some of the things you’re most thankful for this year?

Much as I loathe Derick, he really is looking better in recent pictures. Cleaner, neater and generally healthier.

Okay, I'm giving Jill props for this. I don't think this is her "friend" who sells RF. These may be friends Derick has made at law school, or friends from church, or maybe an old friend of Derick's from his life before Duggardom.

Anyway, Jilly Muffin, who grew up cloistered in the Duggar family compound, has hosted Thanksgiving dinner in her own home, with invited guests who are not family. When you look at it that way, it's a huge step, IMO. I don't know if it signals estrangement from her parents, or just emancipation from circling the orbit of the TTH. Plenty of non-fundie young families go through the experience of juggling the expectations to spend holidays with their families of origin vs. creating their own traditions of having the holidays in their own homes. 

Derick does look better. Maybe his immersion in the secular world of law school has caused him to dial back his religious fervor. I don't assume he's changed his beliefs, but at least for now he's focused on a course of study from texts other than the KJV Bible. For all we know, Derick may never have been well-suited for a career as accountant, but chose that major in college as a good career choice (and that's not a stupid thing to do!). Maybe his law school courses are resonating with him more deeply than his accounting classes ever did. And even if he wasn't born to be an accountant, that training will be useful if he does become a lawyer.

I'm not going to snark on Jill's presentation of the Thanksgiving meal. It's real, and how a lot of families do it. I don't think she had the good fortune that many of us did, to grow up in a home where our mothers laid a pretty table for special and holiday dinners. (ETA and even if she did, as @Scarlett45 pointed out below, the presentation isn't everything. There are many ways to have a good time - and the company and atmosphere is the important thing.)

Oh the pants are LEATHER. Cute cute. (I thought they were denim but I can see the texture now). I still think the sweater should’ve been longer/bigger - which would’ve been an intentional look, or fitted. Jill dresses like someone who lost 40-50lbs and still thinks she’s her old size OR someone who was teased as an adolescent for having breasts/a buttocks. Given she was molested by her own BROTHER, I am not surprised she might have negative thoughts about her body (poor thing!) but she’s got a cute figure. You can be modest and still wear clothes that fit. 
 

Lauren for all of her drama queen tendencies knows she’s got a nice ass and wears clothes that show that in an appropriate/non vulgar way for a young woman. Jill take notes.

Yes. Other people have a variety of traditions. I’ve done Thanksgiving at 5 star hotels in cocktail dresses AND in my sweatshirt & disney leggings with takeout Chinese (like this year). What matters is that loved ones are together and happy, and find joy in each other. I enjoy a fancy holiday meal (I love fancy things!) but I can also enjoy a Thanksgiving in lounge wear and paper plates as long as I am with the people I love. Neither one is better than the other, it’s the intent and love behind it. 
 

If Jill had a great time with her guests and felt the joy of their company then who cares about the paper plates, not me. 😁

Well they all look OK for now.  Hopefully no one got sick from the turkey.  No mention of Cathy or Dan.  

I don't get the 2nd picture.  Derick looks like he's 10 yrs old & Mommy told him to stand with the leftovers.  Why is he wearing  what looks like a heavier jacket inside in two of the pictures? 

Poor Izzy. He sounded very excited about Thanksgiving.  Too bad he doesn't go to a preschool where he could have made a pilgrim hat as well as turkey pictures.  Or brought in something from home to contribute to a "feast"  & make homemade applesauce for snack time. Or learned a Thanksgiving song or two & listened to Thanksgiving stories.  But all he did was ask everyday how much longer til Thanksgiving.

Actually, I don't think the burgundy top is too big. If anything that first blue sweater may be too bulky for her. 

But that second picture is fabulous! Even the hair and makeup look good. And dare I say Jill looks better than Amy.

@madpsych78 yes, that fuzzy parka item looks like a piece of outwear that she borrowed from her husband (I know her husband is slim but I’m speaking of women who like to wear their boyfriend/husbands oversized sweaters and things). 
 

Her hair does look particularly nice in the second picture. It’s shinny and the bottom is curled in a lovely way.

I saw a Butterball lady on TV yesterday talking about this as one of the methods of thawing, so apparently it's still a thing.  Here's what it says on the Butterball site:

I don't know why Izzy is crying in the group photo, it could be for a lot of reasons.  Maybe he was acting up because he was so excited and being told he had to stand still so they could take a picture.

I suspect that Jill might have unintentionally built up his expectations about Thanksgiving.  

A week from the day:  "Boys, Thanksgiving is coming up!  Isn't that exciting!  It's going to be so much fun!"  Sam is too young to understand much of this talk of future events, so he ignores her or gives her an obligatory smile and goes about his day.  Izzy is more aware of the passage of time, and vaguely realizes that this is A Big Deal, so he's much more interested and his interest spurs Jill to keep talking about it.

Four days away from the day:  "Boys, Thanksgiving is getting closer!  I bet you can't wait, can you?"  Sam nods and moves on.  Izzy is feeling the anticipation and starts asking "Is it Thanksgiving yet?"  Jill doesn't realize that Izzy is expecting really big things, like fireworks, presents, people laughing and overflowing love and affection.  Maybe there's going to be cake and singing.  It's going to be GREAT!

He starts to ask daily "Is it Thanksgiving yet?, hoping for all of the wonderful things he's been dreaming of to finally happen.  Mom tells him, "Not today, but soon.  Stop asking."

The day before:  "Boys, we're going to put this turkey (Iz only sees a plastic blob) in a cooler and put it in the bathtub!  We're going to pour cold water over it and thaw it out!  Thanksgiving is tomorrow!"  Iz and Sam dutifully pour cups of water over the plastic blob in the box in the bathtub.  Mom takes pictures.  Sam is mildly interesting in pouring out the water, but soon loses interest.  Iz is willing to go along, because it has to do with THANKSGIVING, but he doesn't really understand it.  But Mom is happy, and THANKSGIVING is tomorrow!  It's gonna be great!

Thanksgiving Day:  Izzy wakes up, eagerly waiting to see what the storied Thanksgiving will be.  Nothing happens.  Mom is wandering around in the kitchen and there's talk about the guests who are going to arrive soon.  Dad pulls out the laptop and there's something called a parade on it.  Iz watches for a while but it's just random things he doesn't understand.  Floats, marching bands, sometimes someone sings a song.  It's somewhat interesting at first, but it's not what he was expecting.  Maybe the Guests are going to bring THANKSGIVING!  He waits, and when the guests arrive, they're just a mom and dad and some kids.  All the conversation seems to be about turkey, and how it will be ready soon.

All the adults are telling each other "Happy Thanksgiving!"  NOTHING'S HAPPENING.  No one seems to expect anything else to happen.  They're talking about dinner!  But first, they must pose for a picture.  Iz asks "Is this Thanksgiving?"  He's really asking "Is this IT?  Is this what I've been waiting for for what seems like forever?  I had such high hopes for this day."  But his parents crush his soul just a little bit more when he's told "This is Thanksgiving.  Don't you dare run off.  Stand here and let us take a picture."

Later on Izzy will realize that his dreams are not only not important, but that he shouldn't have them.  He will live the life his parents give him, and they'll do everything they can to prevent him from thinking and living independently from them.  He will follow their rules, their religion, their plans, and do it with a smile on his face.  His longing for love and acceptance will hinge on his adherence to those rules.  If he eventually finds that he can't accept life under their terms, he faces a life where he's adrift, making his way without their help and unprepared socially and educationally to succeed.  His best hope to escape is if his parents move further from the ideals they currently hold dear, and move as a family to a point where he can have them behind him as he forges his own path through life.

But for now, Iz forces down his bitter disappointment and eats dinner.

That North Face Jacket is made of the same material and only a little warmer than his sweatshirt. When I was in high school, kids wore those (North Face) jackets all the time in school. It looks normal to me.

I would totally wear that on a day I was feeling confident. The top is absolutely my style, and I'd buy it in a hot second if it showed up at Macy's, or the late, lamented Dress Barn. And I'd wear it, as I said, with leggings or skinny pants if I felt extra confident, or any day with my ubiquitous "floopy pants" (those unstructured not-quite-palazzo-but pretty-close that I buy in every available color whenever I can actually find them). That’s how we do it too, so I didn’t see anything wrong with Jill’s method of thawing her turkey. I did however wonder at her cooking it overnight, but I’ve never cooked a turkey that big so maybe it’s fine. I know my grandma used to stick hers in the oven at like six in the morning, and she bought big turkeys like Jill’s turkey.

I looked up the pants. The price is $72. They have stretch panels on the side and maybe the back, so they're not all leather. The website doesn't say too much. I have some Ann Taylor pleather pants I wear or rare occasions. They look great and are washable, so they keep their place in my closet. 

These pants must fit tight. I'd wear a long sweater too to cover up a bit.
