On the one hand, I agree, but on the other hand, a fourteen year old who is acting out sexually needs help. Not ditch digging and shunning, actual help.

Because something is going WILDLY wrong when a kid maybe not even past puberty himself is doing things like assaulting his younger sisters in common areas of the house and watching porn so publicly that random little kids are walking in and telling on him. Like, there's curiosity and then there's THAT.

And I know that JB and Michelle know that a kid acting out like that is a HUGE red flag, because they are obsessed with sexuality and sexualize everything.

It just makes me wonder so much about the greater context that Josh was operating in. Because a house where a five year old can be digitally raped by her brother in a common area and nobody even bats an eye is just mind-boggling to me. It just makes me think that Josh is the (most visible) symptom, but wtf is the disease.

That's true, but we'll never know if he had been given real help early on if things would have changed.  Possibly, and possibly not.  The fact is that his parents didn't even give him (or his sisters) a chance.  It's so sad.

Yes, but that seems like a huge conflict.  I can't see a judge being on cases so closely related.  It doesn't seem right to me.

You've said a whole heckuva lot here. And I can agree with all of it. It's all just so complicated because of the fact that the initial transgressions might have had their roots in relatively innocent adolescent curiosity/pushing boundaries, but looking at the way it all evolved, there were obviously other issues in there from the start. 

I was willing to give Josh the benefit of the doubt for a very long time, really. Between his upbringing, and the fact that other opportunities probably came to light sometime during his DC years, there was always the chance that he had a bit of an overactive libido, and opportunities to act on it which, given his background, would have probably been both spiked, and easy enough to access and hide. Still nothing all that damning in the major scheme of things.

But now, with all the latest allegations, it's impossible to look at it without seeing that he's a deeply broken human being - whether due, to some extent, to his upbringing or simply to his having been born a sociopath with uncontrollable urges toward sexual dominance and perversion. There's, of course, always some element in that which is somewhat beyond an individual's control, but if it had been identified and dealt with in an appropriate manner, might have at least mitigated his behavior. Some people are just beyond help, though. I have no idea whether he might have been one of those from the get-go, but it's heartbreaking to think that so much grief might have been avoided if his parents had not been so deep into their personal kool-aid.

I wonder if they really thought he's been cured though. He did have that monitoring program on his computer at the car lot. Was that there just as a precaution, or because they still had a concern? If they did have a concern, I hope they thought it was just adult/regular porn he was interested in and didn't know about the kid stuff and didn't do anything about it.

What I wonder about Josh are the years from age 15 until he married Anna and the years from around 2015 until 2019, when he was raided. Filling in those gaps would tell us a lot more about him. I also wonder what Josh knew about himself and/or thought about himself.

What we know is in and around 2003 Josh molested his sisters, in and around 2013 Josh was on Ashley Madison and around 2019 he was viewing CSA. We can also add that he tried to protect Jacob's abuser and also a telling scene from when Josh, Anna, JB & M were checking out the Dillard's McMansion. 

No doubt that Josh is a sexual predator, but I wonder if he's a true pedophile in the sense that children are his true and only 'interest'. Or in hindsight are we seeing an escalation of a need for more and more deviant sexual experiences. 

But either way Josh has, and is, a problem. If he gets 10 years behind bars he'll only be in his 40s when he gets out. That's scary because that leaves a lot of years for Josh to prey on more victims.

Bingo.  What are his compulsions?   I wonder if as part of his sentencing he will be required to have an assessment to identify exactly that along with his propensity to reoffend -- and will he be required to participate in treatment, during and after incarceration?

It's not so much with an idea that he can be "cured", rather a truly watchful set of eyes on him that cannot be sloughed off with any of his smug tactics because those eyes will have seen and heard it all before.

It's hard to say without watching the scene (the gist of it sounds like a lot of newlyweds who have felt the need to tell me and everyone else about their honeymoon. I never want to know, but it doesn't stop them from sharing!). But I think what stands out the most to me is that it seems like something a power-trippy person would do. It's okay if he brags about all the sex he's having on his honeymoon and makes swallowing jokes about his wife in front of her doctor, but if she mentions it, then he's uncomfortable.

Even in Josh's social group, a woman in her 50s or 60s is allowed to be alone with a young man not her husband. I dont think these rules apply to menopausal or post-menopausal women the way they due to women of reproductive age and young men. A little bit of misogyny, social expectations in inter-generational relationships, and practicality. 

Elder women in the family (I dont mean elderly, but the "elder generation") are often not subject to the same rules regarding separation of sexes the way that young women are. They are NEEDED for caregiving and domestic tasks, and are often "de-sexed".

If I were Mrs Reber I would not want to be alone with Josh, because he is a creep and an asshole and I wouldnt want him in my home eating my food, but if Josh wasnt Josh (just another young man, like a nephew of Mr. Reber) it would not be odd.

One thing that really stood out to me on his Ashley Madison/OKCupid profiles was how tame his list of preferences and desires were. At the time, I took it as a sign that he just wanted anyone who wasn't Anna rather than anything specific, sexually speaking, because all he wanted was the plainest of vanilla sex. But now I'm wondering if he's been escalating since then--extramarital sex probably being extremely deviant to him at the time; or if what he wanted was deviance or kink without consent. Because there are a ton of options online for finding someone who wants whatever your kink is, so if he wanted kink but said he wanted vanilla...there are some really sinister implications there, and I hope I'm just letting my imagination get the better of me.

That was awful too. I was with my BFF when she had her baby and I wouldn’t have DREAMED to sleep. And that wasn’t my baby!

Bolded your first paragraph for emphasis.  This cannot be stated enough. Teenagers who are sexually acting out can very often be helped through an accredited and evidenced based treatment program. Working with kids who are still developing their moral center and who still have a great deal of brain development during those years is much different than working with a 35 year old man or woman who has been sexually offending for years.  Digging a ditch doesn't teach you about harm to others, about emotional and physical intrusiveness, or about cognitive distortions that justified the offense.  Josh might have been put on the right path if his parents had gotten him REAL help. Now it probably is too late.

They believed in letting the church and families settle these sort of problems. They were STAUNCHLY against outside assistance. They viewed it as interference and showing weakness in their faith. 

Knowing what they know now, I wonder if Boobchelle would seek outside help if Jackson (the only male minor left) acted out in some way?

I know the way they view CPS. But it’s such a shame that someone, anyone who knew, didn’t at least make an anonymous report.

Unfortunately, even their church friends believed that such matters were to be handled internally. To report would be interference. Sad, but that's how they operate.
