Dorinda Medley: Berkshires Chic

In the previews to the reunion, Dorinda actually looks much younger although I still hate her hair.  She needs to go back to that short bob and tone the color down.  But she looks much better.  Wonder if she is off the sauce?  Or is it just diet and exercise?

She said that she doesn’t drink on her work out days because it’s too hard to keep up the regimen

I still like Dorinda even though she goes way too far when she gets upset. My impression of her is that she's genuinely a nice person.

I spend way too much time thinking about these women.  I had a thought about Dorinda.  She always seems really jealous of the opportunities that these other women get such as Lu's show and her asking Sonja to perform with her.  She seems super bitter about B.  I started wondering why would she be this way and then it dawned on me, besides her stupid line of tshirts, no one has come to her and asked her to be the face of their product.  She has not slapped her name on ANYTHING.  Bethenny has all of her various products, Lu has her bad fashion line/home goods/singing/cabaret act, Ramona has wine/(maybe) face stuff/jewelry, Tinsley HAD stuff but doesn't seem interested in more right now (well she does Coupon Cabin jazz), Sonja has her shoes/clothing line (maybe), but Dorinda has none of this (neither does Carole really).  I think it bugs her and that is why when she is drunk she lashes out.  I could be completely wrong but it jumped into my head and I thought hmmmm.  She does think her wacky catch phrases make her super popular and she tries to be the procurer of whatever the ladies need but then gets very angry when not appropriately thanked (in her mind).

Part of me is just waiting for Dorinda to blow up at Ramona.  They’ve had ups and downs before, usually over John, but not a full drunken meltdown.  It was rough watching Bethenny and Luann try to convince themselves that Dorinda doesn’t mean what she spews when she gets wasted.  And we know she hates Sonja.  I’d just like to see that veil come completely off.

It's only a matter of time! I think most people have at one time or another been really drunk and blown up at someone because they have said something that, a really drunk person, has taken offence to. Usually the next day yoy forget about it and chalk it down to being really hammered and blowing things wsy out of porportion. Dorinda somehow manages to hold onto that drunken rage even when she has sobered up. Even when shes not drunk she still has the mindset of someone who is. Scary.

The interesting thing is that Dorinda is no longer feeling even slightly wrong or ashamed or sorry for what she says and does when drunk.  She was abjectly apologizing to Bethenny last year when she went off and stabbed herself, and again this year after the Miami dinner.  But by the end of the season, she thinks she’s more wronged than wrong with Luann, and she’s reveling in her Jovani heckling.

Well she did admit she was wrong and her tears seemed genuine when she was crying to Bethenny about how she had hurt Lu with the things she had said. But Dorinda has done the mean drunk routine enough times and becoming more and more plastered at events (beyond these girls trips) that her tears and apologies are no longer easing the scrutiny on her drinking. And this season especially, her drunken moments hasn't produced anything comedic like her infamous 'clip' scene from last year so she likely isn't getting as many people giving her passes. Essentially, I think Dorinda is now at a point where she needs to either admit she had a problematic relationship with alcohol or she has to double down and cut down any kind of insinuation of the sort. For now, she has chosen to do the latter. She has already in some way acknowledged her drinking issues when she was confronted by Bethenny on camera. My theory is that she has confided things to Lu in honesty and in private and I think she saw Lu's comment as being a violation of something that was said in confidence. Of course, if she had let the comment stand, it wouldn't have called nearly as much attention to her behaviour as it did by her trying to address it (in a drunken state which she tries to deny is the case). I think sober may feel sorry for what she did but at this point, it's self-preservation. To be clear though, I don't think Dorinda is intentionally lying to the viewers. I think she's lying to herself and isn't yet ready to admit that her relationship with alcohol can often times seem quite unhealthy. I'm not sure Dorinda understands the concept of a functional alcohol (though in many cases in front of the camera, she's barely functioning all that well).

It was also interesting to see how she tried to defend herself - by suggesting that she isn't an alcoholic because she's never been arrested for public intoxication, assaulted a police officer or has a mugshot...as if that is the criteria used to measure whether one may be an alcoholic or not.

I'm rewatching the last episode of the season and the thing is, Dorinda was right. It was petty, petty, petty of Luanne to not invite John. Though Luanne had a point, Dorinda should have asked before the day of. Still it's petty.

If Dorinda had just not gotten drunk, she could have been right. But instead, she got drunk and heckled Luanne on stage and now, even though she was right initially, she is now forever in the wrong.

I just don't think Dorinda not inviting John was an intentional slight. At that time, most of the girls were single. So I don't think she was handing out plus-ones. In addition, Dorinda (HERSELF) hadn't really been taking John to things that year. I can only remember seeing him during their private lunch. 

I think when Dorinda asked last minute, Lu was probably busy with prep and copped an attitude about it. But didn't Lu say that she finished the text by saying, "Fine, bring him, whatever"? So I believe her when she then relayed that she felt she handled it wrong and rushed to invite Scott, so as to kind of rectify things. In her mind, she had told Dorinda to bring John. 

I used to love Dorinda, but she has just been a beast this year. I'm glad that she's in therapy and I hope she's curtailing her drinking; but until she's ready to be 100% honest about her issues, she's never going to totally improve. Dozens of people admit their alcoholism before they end up in trouble with the law. That's not a requirement for hitting rock bottom.

I think that the reason Dorinda got teary and hugged Bethenny at the end of the reunion is Dorinda reading "Bethenny's regret" as  Bethenny confirming (on camera, no less!) that she is not a drunk. She can now go back into denial and continue drinking her face off.

(See, Bethenny doesn't think I'm a drunk, so I'm not).

Absolutely 100% on Dorinda's response to Bethenny's well-timed apology, which I think B actually pulled out of her tortuous ass right then and there. That's all an addict needs is validation of their denial. It was a shitty strategic move on B's part to gain Dorinda's loyalty. Also, I gather that after Carole's outbursts and going down in flames, Dorinda wised up pretty fast that she needed to jump ship and Bethenny threw her that life raft as well.  Especially if she wants to keep that apple next year.

Six months late and I just finished watching S10. 

I think Dorinda is so, so sad. She's clearly never gotten over the death of her husband and seems to desperately miss him. That's where the drinking, coke (ALLEGEDLY) comes from. 

She seemed desperate trying to convince us she likes John. I'd forgotten they've been together for 6+ years. 

Yes, she needs rehab. But she also needs SOMETHING to look forward to when she gets out of rehab. Out of all the HW's, I feel like she's the only that has a regular housewife life--as in she doesn't work (outside of the show). IIRC, we've never seen her at work or any business ventures.

I think most of us have a difficult time understand her relationship with John.  Okay he’s overweight, red faced and just not attractive.  The problem is, I don’t see anything condemnable in his personality either.  We’ve seem Dorinda walk out on him on multiple occasions.  We’ve seen him escort her out of an event when she’s too tipsy.  There must be something we aren’t seeing because I just don’t get it.
