Well, I don't think any of these people are rigorous enough thinkers to worry about whether their political beliefs or other "philosophical" beliefs and their religious beliefs line up (or even try to figure out whether they do). And the Calvinism question is mixed, here. Bin and Jer come from Calvinist backgrounds. None of the rest of them seem to. However, a whole lot of conservative Baptists in the U.S. have been getting more and more Calvinist over the past couple decades -- those used to be somewhat more opposed traditions -- and now you see people like Derick, raised in and involved in what used to be a traditional Baptist church, following really Calvinist people. Zella March 3, 2019 Share March 3, 2019 (edited) I went to a Calvinist-ish college (unaware of that when I enrolled). I found a lot of people were pretty oblivious to that theological slant in the chapel services and religion classes. However, there was a very small but vocal minority who were VERY into Calvinism, and they were insufferable and obsessed. I left that college abhorring Calvinists, to be honest. In a way, I find it funny that none of the Duggar-adjacent in-laws who have expressed an interest in the ministry seem to be really into the nitty-gritty-ism of Calvinist theology like some of my former classmates were. But it would require them to, you know, read. 😂 Edited March 3, 2019 by Zella 9 Link to comment

Why would anyone choose to worship that sort of Deity? Even harder to fathom, for me, is why in the world it's surged back in recent years. Some kind of super-rebellious counteraction to perceived marginalization of conservative Christianity and its preferences like male dominance and such by "the world" is all I can think of. But it still doesn't make any sense to me. Historically, life was so hard and fate so random and rulers so brutal, that I guess it makes a little more sense to me that the Calvinist ideas would ring true (plus they evangelized a lot). But why people in the late-20th-century U.S. started madly embracing it again really baffles me. The backdrop just seems all wrong. Edited March 3, 2019 by Churchhoney 7 Link to comment

Jynnan tonnix March 6, 2019 Share March 6, 2019 I have flat feet, just like my dad (and at least one of my cousins - we laugh that we are feet twins). My dad probably grew up not having shoes for much of his life (he's gone now, but as many stories as he had of growing up in places ranging from refugee camps in Siberia to orphanages in India, I can't imagine he always had shoes). They never really came up in conversations, though, other than he used to tell me off a lot if I wasn't wearing shoes. He always saw it as very disrespectful, especially if you sat in a way that the soles of your feet were visible, shoes or not. Hmm...that was a long story for something only meant to convey the information that my feet are flat and while they always were, and I have pretty much only worn shoes under protest for my whole life being barefoot is still way more comfortable to me than anything else. 6 Link to comment

That's interesting about your dad! My dad was stationed in the Middle East for awhile, so I remember him talking about showing the soles of your feet was very offensive there. Perhaps that's something your dad picked up in his travels? My dad's parents grew up poor in Appalachia during the Depression, and I know they walked around barefoot just as part of everyday life because my grandpa has said he was made fun of for it in school. Perhaps because of that background, they associate barefootedness with poverty. They are the most vocal in my family in scolding me for not wearing shoes. Like, it really bothers them and always has. It drove them crazy that I was always tearing my shoes off as a kid and still am even as an adult. But I'm like you. I don't like wearing shoes and spend most of my time barefoot. (The exception being in public or around horses or horseshit and that sort of thing, like Joy was.) Edited March 6, 2019 by Zella 6 Link to comment
GeeGolly March 6, 2019 Share March 6, 2019 We are such an awesome group and can turn anything into an interesting conversation! I grew up with bare feet in the summers and continue to take my shoes off any chance I get. My children are the same way. My husband, however, wears shoes for the majority of the day - whether he's leaving the house or not. Duggar feet are in a whole other cringe worthy category. When they were less financially stable they would buy used shoes and then share them among themselves. They continue to share shoes. As Joy reminded us in a previous episode, dirty foot after dirty foot went in all those shoes. Thinking of Duggar feet, shoes and bedding is enough to make an iron stomach feel queasy. 9 Link to comment

True, but in this scenario, I'm pretty sure the horse would be trucked in from somewhere; held offsite penned up in some sort of trailer or equivalent (whatever does not run afoul of the ASPCA); and led onto the scene by a trained trainer at the perfect moment of readiness, as a perfectly blow-dried model skipped out of her trailer and in front of the wind machine for 5 minutes next to the horse. (I mean, maybe someone they know *did* trailer them in a horse from offsite; and thus there's no poop in the pasture.) 5 Link to comment

Actually, I'm 100 percent sure she took her shoes off for the photograph. Because it's not a photo of Joy per se.... It's a clothing ad -- for a romantic-ish, teenish, flowered dress..... And romantic clothing ads -- like the ones in Vogue and the New Yorker and Vanity Fair and Seventeen -- are fantasies. She was imitating advertising because she was posting advertising, not a "photo of Joy.' Many of the people at whom the ad is directed probably see it just that way, too, I expect. When you look at those clothing ads -- or car ads, or lots of other kinds of ads -- you definitely go into fantasy mode. You don't say, "Oh, that expensive car is clearly going too fast down that moonlit mountain highway! And the driver's looking at his girlfriend, not the road! That's unsafe!" When it's an ad, you're suspending disbelief because they've taken you into a fantasy. And your brain (at least subliminally) goes, "Wow, I'd sure like to be doing that! Mmmm. Exciting. Romantic. Maybe I'll look at that car model at the dealership tomorrow." Now, that's obviously much easier to accomplish when you're a professional photographer with a budget and the know-how to make the photo look fantasy-like in numerous ways...and you're photographing people who'll be total strangers to virtually all the viewers. Nevertheless, that's the effect they were going for in the photo, and I'd be shocked if it didn't trigger that response in a fair number of young girls in the target market, actually -- And triggered the response BECAUSE of the bare feet. The bare feet are one of the things in the photo that make it a sexy teen fairytale, not reality-with-poop. Fairytale photos can sell. Reality photos, not so much. 1 minute ago, Churchhoney said: Edited March 10, 2019 by Churchhoney 15 Link to comment
