Post-Election Fears & Anxieties

He is so unstable and so unqualified that I'm really scared about what happens with someone SO unfit for office in this job.

I also sort of wonder if he turns on a dime now and just drops a lot of the stuff he was saying on the campaign trail. Was it all for show?

Someone said one of his talking heads is already -- not even 12 hours into this thing -- retconning the wall stuff into a "metaphor" for border control.

Someone do me a favor and google this: "homes for sale in Cape Breton" or "homes for sale in Ontario".   Do that please and let me know what you come up with on google search.  Google a few of them, not only one

Okay - what am I looking for.  Looks like homes cost a fortune there.

I was in the middle of a West Wing rewatch, and it's suddenly soured for me completely. Every time I hear the words 'president', 'White House' or anything similar, I feel queasy. And I was gearing up to watch Designated Survivor at some point soon. Dammit.

I hate to admit it, but Home Alone 2, which was one of my most favorite films prior to Trump cruelly swiping the election, is ruined now. I don't think I could see it now considering that it had Trump in it.

Barack Obama was our president for 4 years.

He's been President for nearly 8 years, two terms. Many people hated him throughout his tenure and battled him at every turn. The black vote mattered in his elections, but despite that he barely got the numbers to win with 51% of the vote. People either loved him or despised him. They ignore all he's done for the good of this country (and the list is long) and they focused on things that weren't so good like the ACA which is something it took him four years to get the House to finally pass after mutating it into something it wasn't in the beginning.

The Republicans won, that's all there is to say. Now the ball is in their corner and we'll all just have to wait and see what comes next. But as of today. President-elect Donald Trump has full access to everything within the government, all secrets all nuclear codes, all the enemy lists that will no doubt have his name on one of them. My final opinion, James Comey took this country down and of course he had plenty of help. But people obviously wanted this and they got it. They win, we lose. That's all.

Someone in this thread quoted Curio as saying that Obama was a great president because there had been no big scandals while he was president and a few other similar facts.

I would like to say that when a president does almost nothing, there will be almost no scandals as well as almost nothing else. Surely that cannot be a valid criteria for greatness in a president.

My hatred and contempt for Obama breaks through all kinds thresholds. I think he has to be one of the very worst presidents the US has ever experienced. I just shook my head in despair on most every day of his presidency. What a Plucker!  I use the word, "Plucker" as in "MotherPlucker" because it would not be appropriate to call any sitting president a "MotherFucker". But I can't think of any other name to describe this dolt!

I loved the fact that he was so verbally abusive towards Trump at that White House state dinner. But now, he will have to swallow his pride as he hands over the keys to the Oval Office to Trump. What a revolting development!

Fuck you Obama. Could you not have thought of anything more destructive to do other than to become President of the USA? I think History will look back on you as one of the biggest chumps that ever entered politics. I just can't believe that Americans voted you into a second term. So embarassing. So sad. Lord have mercy on the USA. They are gonna need it. In spades!

So you equate "no scandals" with "accomplishing nothing"? And, of course, "Obama is teh worst president EVAH because reasons," which are not elucidated. Your user name sounds like it might be of Arab or Muslim derivation. I don't know if you are or not (it doesn't matter), but President-elect Trump says it'll be OK to discriminate against you people again.

I disagree.  Attitudes changed over time?  Nope. Even after the Civil War we had Jim Crow for decades.  To this day the justice system is skewed against black people.  13% of the population but 50% of the poluation in prison. War on Drugs was a war on blacks.  Oh and lets not forget The Voting Rights Act was recently overturned.

Racist attitudes havent changed...just the way they manifest itself.

Don't forget the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Progress is glacial, but it does occur.

That was a pretty scary day. Still, watching men and women rush into a scene of horror and destruction to try to rescue others made me feel hope for humanity. Seeing people lined up for blocks to donate blood was amazing. America was wounded that day, but you could at least say for sure there were decent, selfless people in it. Today, I have no faith in my fellow man. I'm going to look at my fellow white people and wonder who among them was craven and selfish enough to inflict this kind of damage on the most vulnerable in society.

Buzz Windrip will be representing us out there in the world. What. The. Fuck.

Yes, when I read "It Can't Happen Here" earlier this year, I didn't think it was a prophecy.

One Trump talking head just said that it wasn't a physical wall, but a "metaphor" for tighter borders.   The re-spin is going on overdrive.

Some moron in the comments of a Washington Post story said the same thing -- that the media took Trump literally, but not seriously, while his supporters took him seriously, but not literally. No, I felt like writing, the Trumpistas believe he will build an actual wall that Mexico will pay for. They believe he will deport all the illegal aliens. They believe he will bring back manufacturing jobs, when his own products are made in China and elsewhere.

So much about this enrages me, but maybe nothing more than what will happen at The White House tomorrow.  Our current sitting President - the first African American to hold that title - has graciously invited Trump to visit his future home. He will greet a man who insisted he was born in Kenya, and spent years clamining he had no legitimate right to the title of President. It is horrendous. There are so many reasons I didn't want Trump, but this was at the top of my list.

Mine, too.   This particular lie is racist in origin and comes from something so base and malicious that it's breathtaking.  What happened to those "investigators" he dispatched to  Hawaii who supposedly were finding all kinds of things?  What were those things?  Of course, no such investigators were dispatched and it's doubly offensive that this racist bastard sought to delegitimize President Obama because he couldn't stand the thought that he was accomplished.  Then to add insult to injury, he had the audacity to demand the president's academic records.  Like, who in the fuck is he?

That's why I curl my lip in disgust when I see opportunists like these Black pastors and that famewhore Omarosa willfully ignoring that Drumpf is a malignant racist.

I have a personal question I'm wondering if someone can maybe answer. I'm a Type 1 diabetic who's covered now under the medicaid expansion in my blue state of Washington (which I'm very grateful to live in, now more than ever). That was part of the ACA. What happens if they dump Obamacare? Can individual states (the blue ones I suppose) still do things to keep people covered?

thanks for doing that. I tried to google homes in Cape Breton and kept getting a 'connection was reset' notice. I tried other websites for Canadian properties and the same thing. Then I went to other various websites not at all related to Canada or homes and they all pulled up fine, it was only the Canadian property links when blank when I clicked on one. Oh, and they look expensive but keep in mind the Canadian dollar is only worth 74% of the US dollar, that's why people are planning to relocate there.

Like most, I'm in disbelief that people could hate (HRC, Muslims, Mexican immigrants, women, smart people, etc....your choice) so much that they would vote an unbalanced man into office.

But think of it this way. Think of all those people who wrote in, voted for Independents, voted for HRC. This mixed bag of people....we are in the majority. There are still more of us balanced, thinking people than there are of rabid Trump supporters (and I doubt that most were rabid supporters). Hopefully this new majority will find enough common ground to never let this happen again.

I was finally able to sleep for a couple of hours this morning. I was up until 6.

Spoke to my parents and cannot believe how clueless/naive/STUPID they are. Yes, STUPID. My mother actually said that she listened to that asshole's speech and is convinced he'll do a good job. Forget that he's a racist, bigot, sexual predator, xenophobe, sexist, con man. And my father actually thinks he'll "give jobs" to US citizens. I had to tell them both, NO. Plus I have the wrong skin color even if I am first generation American. I will NEVER accept this turd as my president. I tried to tell her he could/would repeal ObamaCare, and she believed his whatever he said last night. Who are these people? I want my parents back.

And I"m obviously a masochist, because I do want to hear Clinton's concession speech, and now that Ryan piece of shit is lying through his fucking teeth. I don't know what I'm going to do.

My very right leaning niece and sister posted early last night about how the electoral college must be done away with.  I posted that I agreed with them wholeheartedly.  I wonder if I should ask if they still feel that way this morning.  Fortunately, I don't see them often, but my family already planned a trip for Christmas.  I think this is the first time I've absolutely dreaded Christmas.  I do love my family and they are mostly decent people, but I am sure my brother in law and my neice's husband won't be able to contain themselves.  I've already told my kids that other than the trip, it will be a very small Christmas this year.  We must pay off all credit cards/loans asap in case mommy loses her job in another year.

Sure, nice minimum wage jobs (which will remain under $10/hour) that service all the rich people, and you'll pay 25% of that in taxes (as the only deductions allowed will be capital/business losses).

My neice's husband seriously thinks Trump's going to cut his taxes.  I tell him that he doesn't make enough for a tax cut, he needs to make $250,000 or more.

All those apocalyptic movies showing the huge have/have not gap?  Well, it'll be here soon.

Well I guess some jobs will come from the new weed industry. And, of course, the weed industry lobbyists who will soon fill Washington DC.

Honestly though, Trump could create lots of jobs with his infrastructure plans. But he'll never be allowed to because McConnell, Ryan and the rest of the Republicans will never allow such frivolous spending on things like roads, bridges and dams. I mean, who cares if they crumble, as long as your economic ideology is pure, right?

This is just me, but I honestly don't think I could salvage a relationship with a loved one who had this attitude. I said earlier that I don't know how I'd react if a family member was like this, but the more I think on it, the more I believe I could walk away from that relationship. Because having toxic, hateful views is bad enough, but throwing them in the face of someone you know doesn't share them? And rubbing it in when your views win out? Yeah, I just don't think I could tolerate it.

But everyone has their own tolerance thresholds.

Part of me thinks he did believe that, as we've been shown how deeply and obliviously racist he can be, but another part of me agrees with you that he may well have not really thought that at all. He just hated Obama and jumped on any excuse he could convince himself of to question his legitimacy, just as he latches onto any and every conspiracy theory and nonsensical complaint whenever he's dealt a hand he doesn't like. This will be a fun four years -- if that. I can't wait for the I Told You So moment.

You know, this is something I've been wondering. I know that Trump used to be tight with the Clintons, but I don't know when or why they fell out. But... could it be that Obama beating Clinton in 2008 is actually part of the reason that Trump began to hate him? Thus leading us all to this dreadful confluence of events?

It would be such a cruel irony.

I have to at least try to be unbiased as hard as it is and blame our media machine that really bolstered up our political agendas. Remember the little boy in Aleppo in the ambulance? Well, that night that we all saw that plastered on the news a very brilliant friend of mine commented about that. He said flatly, 'that's all political, for you to feel sad about, for you to feel encouraged to do something about'. I was shocked and said 'you are so cynical and hard hearts to say that!'. But weeks later after watching more news of Aleppo and our involvement in the fight there between Syrian rebels and the Syrian army I started to accept his analysis as truth. We don't like to hear or believe it, but we are very manipulated by what we watch on our nightly news and never doubt the motive behind the reporting or the genuineness of it. Yes, our hearts went out to a little boy living in a city ravaged by war. But what we didn't see is the bigger picture of Aleppo, our involvement and the need of having the support of Americans for it.

Watch Hyper-Normalisation, Adam Curtis's documentary, available on BBC iPlayer and (probably) youtube. It explores the idea that we are actually living in a world largely fabricated from the lying and manipulation of media and politicians. It's not a crazy conspiracy movie, but a measured look at how simpler narratives are created by those in charge, because they are easier to understand and deal with than the true complexities of the world.

This is by every unit of measurement the WORST birthday I've ever had.

The Republicans won. Now it's on them to shape this wreck into something that benefits this country. My chief issue with Trump has always been that he is dangerously clueless and ignorant about the process of governance. Well, I guess my issue is that he's clueless and refuses to listen to people who know what they're doing.

The only silver lining here is when Trump inevitably betrays the white evangelicals by not undoing Roe v Wade because he doesn't give a shit about them and will do whatever the hell he wants, they'll cry and gnash their teeth and I will make a toast to their tears.

He doesn't have to 'undo' Roe.  All he has to do is appoint a Supreme Court Justice who will agree to allow states to do whatever they want.  So in 3/4 of the US, women won't be able to get an abortion after 4 months because the fetus "might be" viable (which is allowable under Roe), will require a 30 day waiting period before they can have an abortion (when most women don't even know they are pregnant until at least the second month), restrict abortions to one hospital per state "for their safety" and only one doctor per state can do it, so trying to get that appointment in 30 days will be nearly impossible.

I've got Maury on, kind of an uplifting show there for once.  Teen girls who were wild, now grown and have become stable adults.  Then at the bottom are election results.  Thank goodness I didn't get my eyes checked yet because I can barely read them across the room.

My mom, who's getting close to 90, was an avid HRC supporter even back in 2008.  She's finding it hard to believe that every poll, just about every pundit had HRC winning, then this........I know, I know it happened with Truman, but my lord that was back in 1948.  I even thought back to the Nixon/Kennedy race, which was tight as hell, but even though Nixon was found to be crooked (well his own paranoia did him in), he was not a stupid or ignorant man.  Troubled, yes.  This orange clown??

I told Mom have to now focus on midterm elections.  She said well, I probably won't be around.  If/when Trump doesn't deliver and the middle class still has no jobs, the pendulum will swing the other way.  Politics are fickle that way.   It's just the damage that he could do (or his cronies) in the meantime.

I think he'll tire of the job quickly.  He won't do it, just delegate it.  Too bad Kasich didn't take him up on that offer.  I don't agree with Kasich, but he's not as bad as Pence.  Kasich as governor here hasn't changed much for me, honestly.  And we know Kasich has a backbone, unlike most of the GOP.  Here I thought Kasich would be in the catbird seat when the Orange one went away.

I need to clean my house big time (or is the official word bigly now?).  I'll put my energy into something positive.  I can't think about this all the time or I'll go nuts.
