That’s typical for Book Character Day. I had a Supergirl and Black Panther yesterday. Parents just use the same costume they plan on using for Halloween. My own kid was an angel and took, I kid you not, her Bible. 😂😂

We’ve seen her take the kids to the library and read them books. The “book character” day was more about an excuse to let the kids dress up at school for Halloween without inflaming the religious right. Pistol Pete is part of their family history so it makes sense for Derick and Izzy to bond over it.

Derick's obsession with Pistol Pete is absurd. WHO cares about their college mascot days so much that they look for stupid obscure books about it so their kid can dress up?

It’s something Derick has in common with his father. The book was originally published in 2007, his father died in 2008. No clue when the Dillards came upon it, but it could have been purchased before his death, for future grandchildren. Or, they may have bought it for .50 recently. Either way I get it.

I know that when my son was a student at Ga Tech, you could buy such books about their mascot, Buzz. I think we bought one for my grandson when he was young.. And there were books available about other mascots. Most of the books followed the same format,  taking the mascot on some adventure that took them through the various landmarks of the university.  I think they were probably all published by the same company and possibly had the same author. They aren't great literature but they are fine for their purpose.  I think it is perfectly fine for Israel to dress as Pistol Pete in the first grade. It was a relatively easy costume for Jill to come up with, it would be fairly comfortable for a little boy to wear all day and Izzy has a special connection to the character.

I get Derick's emotional attachment to the Pistol Pete thing, though I also think he uses it as a substitute for having a real personality. (In the same way Jeremy apparently thinks eating burgers gives him one or Jana thinks having an aesthetic best described as Tampax commercial by way of Pinterest gives her one.) 

I wouldn't be surprised if his friends and other Arkansans he knows have been bewildered by his Pistol Pete fandom, and it causes him to double down even more.

He's all up in Pistol Pete's business, and Tusk is right there, automatically being a cooler mascot with his own book!

I think Pistol Pete is one of Derick's connections to his father. IMO, nothing wrong with that. I'm sure he misses his dad more than we know.

As much as I snark on these people, come on a first grade boy dressing up as Pistol Pete is perfectly fine, and I'd say that whether these were the Dillards or the random Smith family in class. He has seen Pistol Pete on the sidelines at games - bc I think they do go to a game or two a year or at least homecoming. PLUS Pete is big in his family as he knows that both dad and grandpa were Pistol Pete in college. He's a 1st grade boy, it's perfectly normal for him to want to be like his daddy/do what his daddy did - whether we like his daddy or not. Plus many/most boys that age in SEC country would want to be something related to sports as their character - whether that's football player or mascot. He does read books - that doesn't mean he OR his classmates want to be a Hardy Boy when they can be something associated to football. I mean are people expecting a 6 year old boy to want to be a Shakespearan character in tights or to fit in with the other boys - who'll predictably all be football players and cowboys!? I assume he told J&D this is what he wanted, so they grabbed the book - and honestly probably had it bc Derick probably got it as "swag" at some homecoming event years ago. 

As for Derick's obsession with Pete - I mean I don't love Derick - but he lost his dad suddenly as a first semester college freshman. If anyone thinks that didn't affect him and the trajectory of his life, they're kidding. He was at the time practicing to try out for Pete and hadn't told his dad/it was going to be a surprise. So OF COURSE he clings to Pete because it is like the ONLY thing he has that he shared with his dad as an adult. It's no different from guys who lose their dads in the military when they are young boys/before they remember them, and then they go into the military; lots of them will say that they never got to share anything that was important to them with their dads - not driving a car, high school football, shaving, or anything, so at least this way they get to share something that was important to dad.

And if Iz and/or Sam end up going to Okla - as Pete or not - god bless, they could do MUCH worse. I'm not saying people going to those schools don't have heinous views under the guise of religion, but come on they'll still be 1000000% ahead of the Seewald cousins who'll have absolutely NO academic training. I mean even 1st grade public school puts Iz 1000% ahead and it's only 1st grade.

And still, not half as cool as Brutus!  He is featured in multiple books for kids. As his bio states 'he went from nut to famous mascot'.

It was obviously a great time for him and a legacy of sorts. I have a friend that was our high school mascot and she still brings it up 30+ years later.

I'm also going to play amateur psychologist and say that Derick might have a very rose-colored view of his college days because that was the last time he was "normal."

I think (actually not just think, I KNOW) that there must be times Derick is so overwhelmed by having a wife so overwhelmingly needy and so lacking in some of the most basic life skills. You got a sense of this during their video about evolution: it seemed as if Jill's thoughts on evolution were based on some Bible study coloring book. Derick is politically conservative and definitely religious, but he's clearly an educated person.

When limerence wears off and you're stuck with a wife who can barely put together a sentence, it's ... not fun. So of course Derick is nostalgic for the days when he was a track star in college.

Sam is all Duggar mostly because there is nothing Dillard about him. I would say there is a strong resemblance to John David.

I wouldn’t be surprised. She’s the only one who has gotten some therapy, so a lot of those emotions are still at the surface (I’m pretty sure the other girls have pushed them down as far as they can).  Hopefully, she’ll go back to therapy if she feels like she needs it. And not really read or watch anything related to the trial. She already knows who her brother is on the inside.

She's not on the prosecution's list AFAIK. The only witnesses (besides experts) I have seen are the guy from jail, Bobye Holt, and Boob himself. 

There's no need to revictimize when Smuggar confessed his transgressions to his father. All they need is proof of a history.

I dunno. It's very in amongst Millennial and Gen Z Christians to get a short bible verse tattooed on their arm. Or a cross on the wrist. Famy has one. So does Steph Curry. They're both a few years OLDER than Jill.
