I just have to roll my eyes at a new "Subway is the healthy choice, yo" campaign months after Ireland's high court ruled that, because Subway's bread is so ridiculously high in sugar, it can't even be classified as bread under the country's VAT rules, it's instead a confectionery for those purposes.

I saw one the other day where the kid wouldn't eat broccoli. Mom didn't chase the kid around, she just opened up a bag of pre-shredded cheese and put in over the same broccoli the kid wouldn't eat.  I thought that was a LOT better than making Mac & Cheese instead of the broccoli.

(I was a fortunate kid in that regard - Mom didn't like broccoli, so we never got it served. LOL)

My son loves broccoli. Probably because I practically lived on when I was PG.

Is anyone else completely over the Kohl's hopscotch ad? I thought it was cute at first, but it's been so overplayed that now whenever I hear that beginning tinkly piano music, I have to mute or change the channel as fast as I can. It's like the ad execs (or whoever makes the airing decisions) got wind that the commercial was cute and popular and decided to play it at least once during every commercial break of every show ever. At least it damn sure feels like it.

I haven't gotten to that point yet on this one, but the one with the guy driving and the singing hood ornament has me wanting to throw something at the tv.

The Facebook Portal ad featuring a new, frustrated 'mum' trying to nurse her baby while portaling with her mum.  Now, I really adore the characters and how they're portrayed.  The new mum actually comes across like she's at the end of her rope without appearing annoying (and the sweet British accents help)

What makes my teeth grind is the message being portrayed here.  All I can think of is when my sister-in-law couldn't get my nephew (who hadn't slept more than 20 minutes at a clip) to nurse.  The reason?  The poor baby was hungry and thin breast milk wasn't filling his tummy enough to satisfy him.  When my sister and I visited, she took the baby from SIL, made a small bottle with formula to which he sucked down in record time - then slept for 2 hours straight.  Needless to say, she never breast fed after that

Now, if it's for medical reasons that the baby needs breast milk, then you need to do what you can do. But I don't like how it comes across (to me) that new mom's are made to feel like they're failures to the point of tears because they can't get their baby to nurse no matter how much they try different positions and what nots.  If the doctor okays the baby for formula then cut your losses, give the kid a bottle and give your boobs a rest.  You'll still be a good mom

Well, I would say that if one is wanting for whatever reason to make breastfeeding work, then "talk to mum" (or lactation specialist, or whoever) should come before "give the kid a bottle".  So the ad seemed okay to me.  And I can well remember that new "mums" can be at the end of their ropes about all kinds of stuff, most of which eventually works itself out. Of course that's easy to say 30-some years later. The ad could as easily been about how to burp the baby or how to get diapers to stay on...

Understood - which is why I did stress that if they need to do it, then they need to figure out how to cope.  My issue is a baby being okayed for formula, yet new mothers still forcing nursing because giving up equals failure as a mother.

Fair enough - I can understand why it could hit a nerve for you based on what  you've experienced.  I guess it just hit me as one of many Facebook ads about one of many possible things people might want to communicate about.

Colonial Penn: "I just got a text from my sister. Remember her neighbor?"  As hubby reaches for a cooky, "The guy that runs...blah blah"  "Not anymore" Camera shows hubby about to bite into that cooky but he stops and says "Are we gonna have that talk again about getiing insurance?"  As the conversation goes back and forth between the couple, every shot of him shows him about to bite into the cooky, but lowers it to say something.

Meanwhile, I'm yelling at the TV, "Eat the freakin' cooky already!"  He never does while the commercial is running.  Maybe he finally ate it afterward.  And I think if that were my brother & sister in law having that conversation, Joe would have eaten all the cookies by the time the conversation was ended.

At least no one attempted to take it out of his hands or shoved it in his face.

Years ago, there was a commercial for something in which a man was about to eat a powdered doughnut regardless of the hateful glare of his (presumed) wife, and before he could put it in his mouth- she took it out of his hand and shoved it into his face! And the whole time the song 'If  I Didn't Care for You!' was playing in the background!  NOPE!

Hey, if   you don't want to eat a doughnut, don't eat it but don't destroy another person's food  and smear their face with it and then try to pretend you did it because you care instead of because you are a control freak jerk who can't stand grown people around you making their own decisions about what they consume in their own house!

And yes, I say this as someone who knows that powdered doughnuts aren't the most nutritious or healthy foods out there but even that doesn't justify destroying another person's food- much less shoving into their face!  So not only was that vandalism and waste but couldn't one also say that that was abuse?

this one annoys me because, the sister has a neighbor and he's supposed to remember which neighbor? Is there only one neighbor the sister talks about and has introduced him to? To me, the sister's neighbor is a relationship so far removed from my every day existence that I wouldn't have a clue? Except Neighbor Billy, my sister had a friend/neighbor that she always called him Neighbor Billy. I asked her once if that was his birth name. At some point, she could have just said Billy and I would have known of whom she was speaking.

But what I came here to gripe about was not one commercial, but several, they all start something like, "they say..." "people say..." "history says..." and then they go on to prove what freaking rebels they are because they don't do what "people say." They just are annoying and irritating, maybe not enraging.

Editing to add a local ad that I am sick to death of, it annoys me, especially when I have the sound on really low on Pluto on Antique Roadshow, UK very late at night. This one penetrates into my brain even when I'm sleeping. It's set to Flight of the Bumblebee and the lyrics, hold on, this is going to just astound at the beauty of these lyrics, but it goes something like: "TulsaHyundaiTulsaHyundaiTulsaHyundaiTulsaHyundaiTulsa H y u n d a a a i i i."

Is anyone else disturbed by the ads called 'Pandemica'? So far, I've seen 3. They're animated, with characters that are (I assume) supposed to be 'whimsical', but that look creepy to me.

The point of the ads apparently is that we should support getting Covid vaccines to underdeveloped countries, but they seem to be implying that those of us in developed nations are somehow piggish thugs who are 'hogging' the vaccines. The most recent ones show partying groups of critters who push past other critters standing quietly in line waiting for their shots, thus using up all the vaccine.

Obviously, any decent person wants everyone to have access to the vaccines, however, we still have LOTS of our own citizens who haven't received theirs yet. Johnson & Johnson as well as Pfizer are both providing their vaccines at not for profit (J&J) or cost (Pfizer) to underdeveloped countries. If ONE (Bono's organization which sponsors these ads) wants help fund that, I'd prefer they just ask for money rather than try to make me feel like a bad person for being fortunate enough to live in the US. JMO.

I haven't seen that one but Spike Lee is now putting out one where he is strongly implying that black communities aren't getting their vaccines because they are black, saying also that some people in those communities don't have rides to vaccination sites. There are, as you said, many many people who haven't gotten completely vaccinated yet, no matter their age, race or health, and from what I have seen, vaccination sites have bent over backwards to be accessible, everywhere, from grocery stores to clinics to convention centers to parking lots to wherever. I really dislike those that try to stir the pot, claiming victimization and bias where there are none.

Except there are racial disparities in who has been vaccinated, continuing the disproportionate impact of COVID on some races and ethnicities; Black and Latinx Americans haven't received vaccinations comparable to their shares of cases and deaths or to their shares of the total population in most states.  The CDC is actively working on vaccine equity.

There are many reasons for that, including well-founded historic distrust of the medical and scientific community among people of color, and Spike Lee has been quite active in encouraging vaccination in the Black and Latinx communities (and is working on a relevant COVID documentary).  I can't find the specific commercial you're referencing, but I feel confident he's not talking out of his ass in it.

Your individual health issues as a white woman over 70 years old have nothing to do with the widespread difference in vaccination rates between white people and people of color overall.  That discrepancy is a race issue, with many contributing factors, as the ad campaign addresses in the hopes of getting more in the Black and Latinx community vaccinated.  That campaign doesn't diminish anyone unable to, because of their medical condition, get vaccinated yet or at all.

I am really not trying to be argumentative, and I remember you from TWoP! but I am not clear as to why there are such disparities in black communities, both in getting coronavirus and in not being vaccinated.  Do they follow CDC guidelines for safety? Are they refusing to go get vaccinated, for free? The "historic distrust" doesn't wash, since the vaccine is for everyone, of any race, not just them, and the virus has killed thousands of people of any race, not just them. I hear it said that there are such disparities and I want to know why, and what personal choices contribute to it, and if people make those choices, why everyone else is to blame?

Delving into this further will likely be dinged as extending beyond discussion of the commercial, but thankfully such analysis is easily found via internet search as the scientific community and media are more open about this issue than they've traditionally been.  If you have additional questions after undertaking that research, meet me in Small Talk this weekend and I can try to fill in the gaps or point you to sources who can.

Optima Tax Relief:  This scofflaw hasn't filed taxes in 8 years and we're supposed to be in awe that Optima Tax Relief renegotiated his debt to the IRS so he no longer owes them money.

Meanwhile, the rest of us have been struggling to get by, paying our debt to society WITHIN THE LAW while this asshat skips off into the sunset, happy as a clam, that he no longer has a tax debt - until he stops filing/paying again. People are upset about some folks taking advantage of welfare - I'm way more outraged by this kind of crap. HOW can this tax relief shit even be legal?

OK, just catching up from a while ago - You can relax if only because those tax relief services don't get anyone off of paying the taxes they owe.  They just help otherwise unable people deal with the IRS, get them a monthly payment program and whatever else is needed to keep interest and penalties from piling up.  I do think it's deceptive advertising that these services act like they just make a few phone calls on your behalf and get you off of your tax debt.  It doesn't work that way for anyone.  The saying that the only two things in life that are final are death and taxes is still true.  Also, those services charge a hefty price for their "help".

I went wirefree after tripping last summer on a sidewalk and bruising my rib because my underwire dug into my rib cage.  I thought I ruptured something and braved going to the Dr. during the pandemic before the vaccine!  It wasn't one of those horror stories where the underwire breaks free and stabs you, just the underwire still in the bra.

Has anyone seen the Lowe's commercial for "Springfest" that advertises Weber grills?  It makes it look like the grill on the screen is $379, but way down on the bottom in tiny little print is an asterisk and disclaimer saying that the grill as shown is $799.  It flashes on the screen so fast you don't even have time to read that, plus even on my 60 inch screen I had to get up close and freeze the frame to be able to see the fine print.

Now that is about as bad as it gets as far as blatant deception goes.  I follow a consumer blog called "Mouseprint" (Part of Consumer World) that exposes this kind of thing in advertising so I took a screenshot and video of the commercial and sent it to the author of the blog.  He is going to use it for this coming Monday's edition, if anyone is interested.  He also contacted the company for comment but they as yet have not responded (and probably won't).

Here is a screenshot of the clip with the Weber grill on it:

Well, the grill ad DOES say "Starting at" in tiny print above the $379, as most of those kinds of commercials do. It's a form of bait & switch.

I used to work for L'eggs, which was a division of Hanes. We had all sorts of stuff in the employee discount catalog, including Bali bras.  There was one that I really liked and a year later, they slightly changed the design and it no longer fit as well as it used to.  Then I found a really great bra made by Glamorise. Of course, it's discontinued. I'm really loving lockdown because I am completely bra-free. I wish I had the nerve to go out like this.
