Wow, that Mary Louse is just all kinds of punchable.

She is triggering my unrealized (until now) desire to throw Mother-In-Law off a cliff.

I need a Xanax.  Or a blood pressure monitor.  Or both.

lol We've all had that desire at some point. 😉

I was looking forward to seeing Meryl Streep in this but I'm so disappointed in her storyline. Custody battle for the kids. 🙄 As if that hasn't been done before. They couldn't think of a more interesting scenario for her (and us)?

Cory is Perry's half-brother. They wouldn't just casually drop the fact that Perry's father left and had more kids for no reason.

Good guess. I was trying to figure out how he would be related to Perry since Jane and he are becoming a couple.

Except for Renata and to some extent Jane, these women seem to have given up on life. What made them enjoyable to watch in season 1 is missing this season. OG Madeline would NEVER have let ML in her house nor left Celeste alone with her. I understand tragedy, grief, lying can mess with your brain but to change the characters 180 degrees has just sucked the joy out of this season.

I wonder why if the bankruptcy court judge questioned the payment for Botox, he had no questions about the expenses for the disco party.  I can’t imagine anyone in town would not make them pay upfront.

Interesting question about who Corey is - Celeste certainly looked at him oddly.  If he is Perry’s half brother, he might have heard some dirt on Mary Louise from his father.

My guess is he came to Monterey after hearing about Perry's death.

Did the bartender drug Celeste?  Was that another Mary Louise set-up?  Sure looked fishy to me. I think they’re making Mary Louise the baddest baddie ever, and it didn’t need to go that far to make an interesting story. They have my attention, have to say!

Celeste said she took an ambien.

If that isn't a veiled reference to Kramer vs Kramer, it should be!  ;~)

I thought that's what happened but then Celeste told Maddie she took an Ambien so I don't think she was roofied---or at least, it was self-inflicted roofying.

I'm getting pretty worried about Bonnie, and I don't like how they keep showing that bridge.

The drowning seems to suggest something but it could also just reflect the fact that she's drowning in the lie.

Is anyone starting to wonder if Bonnie and Ed end up sleeping together?  Or that she tells him the truth?  They seem to be circling together this season with Nathan's weird obsession harassing Ed or wanting Ed to talk to Bonnie, Ed actually talking with Bonnie and even in this episode, they were dancing next to one another.

Ha, good point! At least that was done well and breaking for its time. This is just cliché. Concerned Grandma (or evil MIL?) fighting for the kids. They think they're being clever trying to shock us.  I'm more interested in her story of how her other son died and  how Perry's cycle of abuse started.

This is the most mystifying thing.  I feel like I have missed something because I cannot understand what Nathan's thing is about Ed.  That fight at the party was ridiculous!

I haven't watched it yet, but maybe it's just that he's a good husband and father (to his daughter, and Ed's own). Also still smarting from the comments from the first episode, where he pointed out that he shouldn't be the one talking to Bonnie.

I've never watched Desperate Housewives or any similar trash found on network TV, but this show is starting to feel like that.

Also, I keep wondering if Ed, Bonnie or Celeste work and if so, what do they do?

The judge may not know about the party, but he didn’t know about the Botox either until he questioned an unknown expenditure.  Maybe the disco party people extended credit and think they’re going to get paid.  I assume there was a down payment but it was somewhat of a last minute plan so maybe it wasn’t in the judge’s paperwork.

I would have loved it if Maddie had just slammed the door in Mary Louises face. Celeste’s slapping ML  was great fun but between the Ambien, The slap, and the push of the kid when they were fighting, ML is making a TV worthy custody case (doubt it would ever pass muster in real life).

also, I’m kind of annoyed that we don’t see much of Bonnie’s or Renata's kitchen. I’m redoing mine and could use some ideas. Love Maddie’s but need more ideas. Celeste’s is too cold and sharp for my taste.

Ed is a tech guy/web designer who works from home most of the time.  Bonnie is a yoga teacher.  We saw her at work last season.  And Celeste was a lawyer before marrying Perry. She ended up staying home with the kids.  I'm pretty sure that was Perry's idea and another way he could control her. But it certainly seemed like he had a lot of money so she's probably well off even if she's not working.  (She did bust out her lawyer chops last season when they went up against the town counsel to be able to perform the play they wanted to.) It was a little strange that she didn't know who to go to when she needed a lawyer tonight, though.

Mary Louis is so freaking awful, to the point of me imagining people dressing up like her as a scary Halloween costume (grab your lightly colored sweaters and false teeth!) that its hard for me to admit that she might have a point about Celeste not being on her right mind right now for the twins. Clearly the twins should be as far away from Mary Louis as humanly possible, but maybe Celeste does need some help, what with the drug induced blackouts and driving while comatose or whatever.

For real though, even if the kids like her, everyone needs to stop letting Mary Louis just walk all over them when she is clearly up to no good. Especially with Zoggy. When will she start telling him that his dad was really a nice wonderful guy and his mom was a dirty slut or whatever insane thing that Mary Louis is saying now? No wonder Celeste slapped the glasses right off of her judgmental face! Why should Jane allow her anywhere near Ziggy, she has even less right to him than she does the twins! Everyone just needs to get her to back the hell off!

Nathan is so obsessed with Ed, I almost feel like he has the hots for him but has no idea how to handle it so he pulls his metaphorical (or literal this week) ponytail to get his attention like any dude who clearly has no idea what emotions are. Madeline's head might literally explode if something ever came of that though. I do think they might be heading for some kind of Bonnie and Ed flirtation, they have been pretty friendly lately, and both Madeline and Nathan were looking at them at the party looking not happy.

That party was so freaking extra, and so very Renetta. Her giving a speech about how its her fault for marrying her husband was peak Renetta. Celeste looked great especially in her 70s clothes, and Jane finally looked nice with that hair. Maybe she should wear more bandannas?

This is getting patently ridiculous, the way the Monterey 5 are NOT talking to each other about the things they NEED to talk to each other about, namely Mary Louise. I don't buy for a second that Maddie would be rolling over for ML at ALL.  Ed just talked about how Maddie is a 'charge' kind of woman in a crisis, so where the fuck is she?  Nobody should be letting Mary Louise at Celeste's home. Nobody should be allowing Mary Louise/Celeste to have private conversations. Seriously, am I really suppose to believe someone like Renata wouldn't be all over this shit, despite her financial/marital crisis?  And the way Celeste/Jane are not communicating AT ALL. It is immensely frustrating watching these women wilt and avoid Mary Louise's steamrolling, it's just absolute bullshit.

Holy cow that was good! Best hour of TV I've watched in a week, and that's saying something. (I had a very TV-intensive week.)

I gasped when Celeste slapped Mary Louise. I didn't see it coming, and it looked so real.

I'm loving Meryl in this role. She really inhabits it in a complex way I didn't appreciate at first.

As for Celeste, I just assumed she'd been blackout drunk the night before and didn't remember what she'd done till it was too late. Ambien certainly wouldn't help.

Boy, do I love a good Rectify crossover!  Pickle makes a mean, mean trustee.

Otherwise, this show is just extremely entertaining.  My advice to people who are no longer enjoying it: stop watching.  Because it's not worth the stress.

Renata's chain link black cord sweater wins for freshest threads of the week.  Looovvve.

Celeste is too smart to behave this stupidly. You'd think an attorney would be better at looking out for herself. It's annoyingly unrealistic- she gets this clueless "Duh, wha?" look on her face when anything happens and it's driving me nuts.

And why is everyone being so accommodating to the shit stirring she-devil? Heads up Monterey 5 ladies- have a meeting, come to a consensus on how to deal with/ignore her, and stick to it. They are ALL playing right into her hands. Sloppy writing.

What is up with these 45 minute episodes? I think the producers think the episodes are ending on more compelling notes than they actually are.

Even though there was some misery in the first season I still felt the show was much more aspirational then (and therefore more enjoyable). Maybe it was just the novelty of it at the time but between the music and the interesting color palette and the luxury of seeming to drive around all day thinking and the real estate porn (and also more levity in general) the first season drew me in so much more. Perhaps they’re cutting us off from that this season to set a mood of wallowing and dread. But I really think they should have designated one character as comic relief. Hopefully Madeline or Renata will get their mojos back soon and it will be one or both of them.

I am really enjoying this season.  It is almost as good as the first.  Watching every character self destruct in almost logical ways is fascinating to watch.

I am probably in the minority but I really feel sorry for Renata. I know we are in a time in history where rich white people ate inherently evil and Renata is a first class bitch but she made her money honestly and like she said herself her only real crime was marrying badly.   She wasn’t the one who committed a felony and yet she is being taken down by it.

I also feel sorry for Celeste.  She is drowning in a sea of misery and  Mary Louise is just making it worse.  I am not sure if we are seeing the passive aggressive woman who turned Perry into a monster but she is definitely pushing all of Celeste’s buttons and trying to get custody of her kids is a low blow.

If I was Jane I would worry too.  How long before Mary Louise starts to question her parenting choices?   The guy she is dating?    Maybe you know she should take Ziggy?????

Last week I was all Team Ed but his passive aggressive behavior is getting old.  Maddie was right, either leave or agree to fix their marriage.  Constantly reminding Maddie that he's been wronged (and flirting with Bonnie) while rejecting counseling doesn't help.

Yeah, I called it in ep 2 that Mary Louise was going to go after the boys.  As much as I can't stand her and think she's manufacturing a questionable list of wrongs, Celeste is a mess.  The ambien blackouts are putting the kids at risk.  Still, I wish Maddie had shut the door in her face.  And certainly Jane needs to tell her to stay away from her son.  Or maybe Jane should move again, far far away.  Renata and Gordon can move into her apartment. 🙂

I do not read spoilers so if this is true it's just because I've been thinking for weeks that the clues are there-- I believe Bonnie is going to try (?) to drown herself.  Either her mother is having flashes of a previous incident or is having premonitions.  There are too many references to drowning for it not be a literal event.  (Of course they are all drowning figuratively.)

I have mixed feelings about Ed. He just found out that his wife cheated on him AND that Abigail already knew about it, so he's understandably hurt and upset. He deserves some time to process his anger. He shouldn't be expected to immediately get over it or make a decision about his marriage right away. I think making a big decision while you're still upset is not a good idea.

But that's why I think that Ed and Maddie need to continue seeing a therapist regularly. They need to make progress, not just stay stuck in the same place where he's clearly still upset and she's anxiously waiting to see if he wants to try to work things out or leave.

I do get what Maddie said to him. If he's going to leave her, she'd rather know sooner rather than later so that she can either start rebuilding a new life or start fixing things with him. I understand why she wants to know, especially since it seems like he hasn't been very communicative with her when they're in the house at the same time.

I can't tell exactly how much time has passed since he found out about her affair (the first episode was the first day of school and this episode was some time before Halloween so it's definitely been less than two months) and there's no exact timeline for deciding if your wife's affair was a deal breaker, but he can't keep punishing her indefinitely.

Don't get me wrong - she did a terrible thing and he's allowed to be mad at her. But he can't keep up the (mostly) silent treatment forever. At some point, he needs to actually deal with it one way or another, either by leaving or starting to mend fences with her. What he really needs to decide is whether he can forgive her and trust her again because if he can't do both of those things, there is no relationship left to salvage. You can't be in a relationship with someone you don't trust and you can't be with someone if you're still holding a grudge. I'm not saying he has to do both of those things immediately because it takes time to heal a rift like this, but if he knows that he will never be able to forgive her or trust her, then he should just put both of them out of their misery and divorce her. There's no reason to torture everyone in their family by staying if he knows he can't forgive her.

Dear Ed,

Either shit or get off the pot. Yes, Madeline is the one who had the affair. However, Ed either needs to commit to working on their marriage or filing for divorce. Passive-aggressiveness isn’t cute on anybody. Like, why the fuck did he show up at Amabella’s party and act surprised that his wife, who is trying to remedy things, would ask him to dance? He is so put out by it, and I’m baffled. It’s like, why did you choose to even go at all?

Mary Louise is a true piece of work. She disgusts me every time she doubts Jane was raped. That being said, what the hell is going on with Celeste? I’ve never taken Ambien, but are constant blackouts normal?! If I were Celeste, I’d book an emergency appointment with my PCP/m and/or psychiatrist to figure out why these drugs keep making me blackout and to see if I could be prescribed something with less harmful side effects. Celeste is going to have a very hard time defending medication inducing blackouts. She needs to go on the offensive here, as do all these women.

Celeste is also an abused wife.  I have known plenty of high powered women in these bad relationships.  Hell even Renata  to a certain extent stays with a man who abused her trust to such an impossible level.    People stay.  I would say “women” stay but Ed is staying with a woman he know has cheated on him and lied to him.....constantly.

As for Mary Louise  no one knows what she knows and yeah and she is just passive aggressive enough to get under their skin but up until now to not give them a reason to feel threatened.

I'm pretty sure Ed is a music executive, Bonnie is a yoga teacher, and Celeste is an out of work lawyer.  (Someone upthread said that Ed is a tech/web guy.  I think I got confused because of the littlest kid - Chloe's? - precocious taste in music from Season 1.)

I still don't get what Renata and/or Gordon do for a living?  (Someone upthread says Renata is a CEO - CEO of what?)
