Paul & Karine: These Condoms Ain't For Sexin'

Paul is the creepiest creep who ever crept.  Even if he didn't have a criminal background, his awkwardness would keep him single forever and ever and ever.  Unfortunately (or fortunately for him) the language barrier is disguising how weird and cringe inducing everything he does is.  

 

The reason he was looking in the Amazonian for a woman is that no American women will give him attention that doesn't involve the use of pepper spray or a rape whistle.

This is where I have a problem with this show. It does a lot of image damage to that other country where the spoused is being hatched.  It is always some disturbed Ameircan guy with the obvious reasons like being mentally unstable or financially insecure that travels across the world and finds a vulnerable girl. I understand this kind of scenario gives good ratings, but i would rather watch something more realistic & inspiring. 

Yes, no American woman in her right mind would take Paul or Sean. What the show fails to portray (or the public fails to understand thus creating a bad stereotype is that no woman in that other country in her right mind would take those guys either. Sure, Amazonian teenager living in a shack is probably bursting with happiness for having found her prince charming, but take a girl living in Sao Paolo with education & good job & healthy mentality and she would laugh herself to a heart attack if she gets approached by someone like Paul.

Her dad looked pissed, but like he lacked control over the situation. The cameras there didn't help, but I'm guessing that's why he didn't argue about her going to the hotel. He also said that Karine 'knows what she wants', & the way he said it struck me he meant she wants to get to the US. She's not innocent at all, with the way she seemed upset Paul didn't want sex right away. To me it seemed like she was worried he wasn't impressed enough & was changing his mind. Her behavior, to me, falls right in line with the pics & videos showed where she was pretty much advertising herself.

Paul has a pointy chin & that beard pointing down makes me imagine him with little horns on his head.

Brazilian women are proud of their bodies and wearing skimpy clothes and swimwear is no big deal.  It does not make them promiscuous.  Like women everywhere, they come in all shapes and sizes.

I did not ever call her 'promiscuous', nor did I ever call all Brazilian women promiscuous as implied. Maybe she's genuinely 'in love' with Paul. Maybe she just wants out. By 'advertising', I meant she was trying to attract someone to get her to the US; that's all.

I hope the people that saw him w/his shirt off were wearing protective eyewear! He is so white!! I almost never go out in the sun so I am white, but I have never seen anything like that! 

Oh, I was also wondering about her name & if he is pronouncing her name correctly. I've never heard of anyone pronouncing their name Karin-e. Makes me wonder if the E is supposed to be silent. 

It looked like Karine was a little freaked out by his creepiness but what could she do? Judging by his criminal past it looks like it would be a bad idea to break up with him. I dont think she had any idea what she was getting herself into. I dont think ANYONE who meets someone (who lives a long distance away) online knows what they're getting. They all act like they know the person inside out but unless you've met that persons friends, or seen how that person acts when they're angry or have had a bad day you don't really know them. When your skyping with someone they are on their best behavior. There's no way you can really know someone from talking on the phone and skyping with them.

Darcey seemed to learn that lesson the hard way. Before she met Jesse in person she was acting like a lovesick 15 year old. Actually she was still acting like that even after they met. It was crazy the way he was ordering her around and talking to her like she was a 3 year old. "She'll put her panties here next to mine, shirts go here, and pants go here...". "don't you want to take your makeup off before we go to bed, I like natural". Every other word out of his mouth was "Beautiful" and every other word out of hers was "engagement ring".  I don't know, judging by the look on his face, he didn't look like he was that impressed by her and when she used the world "bullshit" he seemed a little taken aback (even offended) and definitely embarassed.  I expect when they got back to his apt and were alone he said something like "Youre such a beautiful woman, using that language takes away from your beautiful spirit". I imagine that would be his passive aggressive way of telling her to watch her mouth. 

Those two couples really creep me out.

While Brazilian women who live in metropolitan cities across Brazil may indeed show more skin in their daily dress - and not all do - Karine lives in a small Amazonian outpost which is hardly cosmopolitan. I too, would view her dress as culturally inappropriate for where she lives. In addition, Creeper Paul, Idiot 'Murican With Zero Cultural Interest or Common Sense, brings Karine - who is dressed in a very skimpy dress by local rural standards - to a hotel with him in full view of a large group of men who were standing across the street from the hotel. Review that scene, the men are all gathered together on the corner staring at the foreigner and local girl being filmed going into a hotel together. The typical cultural norms in a town/outpost like Karine's is that nice women don't dress like that and they surely dont go into hotels with foreign men to "just talk". Her reputation in her hometown is more than likely ruined at this point, unless she is already known as such a woman and it's no surprise to anyone and the film crew is the attraction (who more than likely stayed at the same hotel if its the best one in town).  I've spent time in places like her town and you're either a nice girl or you're not. Either way, news travels faster than fast, and spending the night, regardless of what actually happens in the room, is not okay if you're not married. They're not in a Ipanema Beach hotel, where her dress and their behavior wouldn't even be looked at twice...I find it unbelievable that Father Karine allowed this and didn't just drag Paul's creepy ass down to the boat docks and put him in a dinghy to sink or swim.

This! I am amazed Paul wasn't very considered or curious about peculiarities of Karine's envrionment & culture. I live in relatively big city, and my side job is related to interacting with a lot of older gentleman from all over the world (sounds like escort, when i tell people, but it is actually for local dog shows). And even I, an adult woman with average looks, get that "aha" grin from hotel staff sometimes. In a small rural setting that Karine lives in, the grin must be wider than the Amazonian river. 

Why do I believe that Paul was just swinging the globe, trying to find the most remote & exotic place where his fame hasn't yet reached the eyes & ears of the locals? He probably looked at South Pole first but then figured no pinguin would ever interact with him, so he went along with plan B.

Well, I learned something today! Thanks for making me go look that up. I really appreciate it. My wife will be fascinated. We'll certainly share this information around because it is fascinating. I would bet that most of our families will stop using "third world", as well!

From international development standards, the term 'Third World' has not been used for a very long time and is considered extremely condescending, colonialistic/paternalistic and patronizing because it referred to people living in impoverished situations outside industrialized countries like America, Europe, Australia, etc. I would liken it to someone using the term 'Oriental' rather than 'Asian'.  'Third World' infers that there are people that are living in a different world than us, which desensitizes us to other realities, and reduces others with less than we have to 'Oh but it's a different world there so...' As in somehow it's okay that people in Africa, Asia, Latin America or elsewhere live with less than, but in OUR a country it's not done. Which is bullshit because a lot of people in rural America live like that, especially in Kentucky.  Karine's family, from what I have experienced in many countries, is not too bad off overall. The fact is, Karine lives in the same world as we all do, and is entitled to the same human rights we all are. We live in one world, there are not three different worlds out there, and every persons existence, no matter how much they have or do not have, is as real and valid as anyone elses is . 

And dumb fucks like Paul - and that supreme douchnozzle Mark of Mark and Nikki - think they're saving these women because they are white knights. fuck that shit. these guys are such damaged goods that's they cannot get a decent human being in their own county so they go prey on women in other countries who maybe want a ticket to a better life and see this as an easy way out and up. Totally agree. It is in Karine's best interest to learn English - fast. The language barrier is huge. No friends in the US, no support system, her parents are not wealthy and live in a remote Amazon village with probably minimal phone and Internet service. He holds all the power and the relationship is unequal in every respect - control is not cool. The dude is showing her who he is - the creepy stuffed toys, the insistence on an STD and pregnancy test. My Spidey senses would be at 11 and I would be running. She gets a trip to the US, which might be exciting. She knows little about her husband and probably doesn't really want to find out.  She will be his 'slave' or whatever he wants until she gets on a more equal footing with him - if he allows that. If he allows her to work - which will mean she will be around others. Does she have the ability to call her parents or any relatives living in the US if there is trouble?  Would she know how to call the cops or find a women's shelter if necessary? Is there a Portuguese community in the city in Kentucky? If her dad was on the police force, surely he has some buddies that can do a check on his prospective son-in-law. If there is Internet access, Google the dude's name and see what comes up - few people are ghosts on the Internet. Might be just standard stuff like employment, but if he does have a record there may be newspaper articles about any court cases, criminal records, etc.

Also - has anyone noticed that he seems to have a very odd gait?  Or is it just me?  There aren't many clips of him actually walking, and those we do see, cut away rather quickly, but its almost like he limps/tiptoes/wobbles - I can't even quite figure out what I'm seeing.  And he always seems to be holding on to Karine or a banister.  A medical condition perhaps?

The one of him and Karine, her hand seems to be growing out of an unseen limb and the lighting on each of them is completely different. DEFINITELY her photoshopped into his picture ... The other one, I think, is her and her family and who knows who with Paul photoshopped into it. Funny if the network made Paul take it down when it's so obviously not them and him just still laboring under some sort of creepy delusion.

I hadn't paid that close attention to the pictures. When you look closely at the first picture, Karine's right arm is curved around his shoulder. In the second picture, his left arm looks like it would have to be too long to go around her in that position.

I greatly appreciate all the posts here!  So much fun!  I think it should be entirely obvious to Karine that Paul is a human dumpster fire, even without the language.  And really, anything that keeps him out of her vagina is a good thing for her.  She seems like a decent person, whereas Paul simply has too few chromosomes.
