When he was younger and less mature, kids were seen as something to be controlled through that blanket training crap. Lots of swagger on getting a baby to behave. Confident. Loosing a baby? Life is fragile and a baby/child is not something to be hit with a piece of tubing. I really didn't want to rehash the discipline style, we all know it's abhorrent. Maybe Austin and Joy's perspective might change and develop now? At least get them thinking? After burying their daughter, how will it affect them? Austin, I hope you and Joy find a gentler and healthier style of discipline. TLC gives everyone a script to speak on camera. Considering Austin's horrible upbringing, he might have been given words to say on camera to make him appear to be someone he is not. Considering his on camera demeanor, he is not comfortable. The pictures, show a different man. Gideon is too young to “fake it”, and the pictures of him and Austin together show a boy who seems to adore his father. I’m sure they discipline Gideon, but I have a feeling it’s a lot more gentle than the Pearl’s. 12 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5476682

If I remember correctly, he defended the Pearls. @Sew Sumi, do you remember the IG details!? What did he say exactly? But, like you said, he might not get out tubing and is just verbally firm...Giddy certainly looks like he has a good relationship with both Austin and Jill. Let's hope! rue721 July 26, 2019 Share July 26, 2019 The thing about Austin defending the Pearls is that he himself was raised in a household where their teachings were undoubtably considered A-OK. Attacks on the Pearls might have felt like attacks on his parents’ choices, and not defending them might have felt to him like it would be dangerously close to disobedience. Austin clearly works hard to be a “good son,” I’m sure he would never put his parents on blast in public (even implicitly). He seems like the kind of man who wouldn’t even want to entertain a disobedient thought, honestly. Very much a straight arrow. That said, it’s one thing to waive away anything from your own childhood as being for the best or coming from a place of love on the part of your parents or whatever, it’s another thing to actually take a piece of tubing or a piece of wood to your own little son (or to use any of the other heinous, abusive “disciplinary methods” that the Pearls recommend). Austin defending practices or ideas that were probably a part of his upbringing seems to me like him defending his parents and his own childhood, I don’t think it means that he’s actually going to want or even be willing to repeat the same things with his kids. 3 19 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5477269

He and Austin were both part of rebellious group of kids, but their rebellion seems to be less ideologically driven (more's the pity) and just getting into trouble. I am not familiar with the congressman he works for because he represents a district further south in the state. It is not the Ballingers' home district congressman that he's working for. Fun fact: if you watch Ballinger Sr's returns during elections, he never wins the counties he lives in. He pisses people off that badly. It's always counties that are less familiar with him as a person who vote for him in large numbers. So, it doesn't surprise me that his son is not working for a local congressman as you'd expect. 7 3 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5478324

Maybe Austin says what he says to bring in the clients to his family camp place but the idea of hitting Giddy with tubing is not happening in his own home. However, he seems to be endorsing those sicko Pearls... That's my point, maybe the loss of the baby will give him a reality check. Sometimes it takes adults years to realize that what happened to them as a child was either abusive or a really, really bad idea. 17 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5478923

queenanne August 10, 2019 Share August 10, 2019 I believe Joy said she would wear dresses because Austin likes them. That doesn't say a thing about whether or not the dresses need to be modest, or how he feels about shoulders. Maybe he just thinks they're more feminine, likes the flow, thinks Joy has good legs, etc. I like the picture of Gideon on the horsey. He looks deep in thought considering something; and also like he'd be doing that deep raspy breathing toddlers do, when they think it would be helpful. I also dig the joyful hollering kid in the pontoon (?) boat. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5515282

These clearly are thrift store shoes and should have been thrown out. When I was a child, we went to actual shoe stores where the clerks were the owners and knew about feet and shoes. The guy in the store told my mother that shoes like these should have been thrown out because they do no more good for the feet. I'm sorry for Gideon, wearing someone else's old worn out shoes. There was an episode when Joy was young where she proudly showed Michelle a pair of shoes, maybe even cowboy boots, that she had colored in with a sharpie and taped up. I think asshole Michelle embarrassingly rolled her eyes. And then there's that episode where her with her dirty bare feet and Austin looked through baskets of dirty shoes to find her a match to the one she was wearing. Now poor Giddy is wearing old stiff shoes that look 3 sizes too big. She might figure out the whole shoe thing one day. 😁 👞 8 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5516890

The turned up toes make me think they're probably thrift store finds, too. After my nephew died, my sister put his favorite cowboy boots in her closet along with her shoes. Several years later, after my next nephew came along, he was playing in her closet while she was getting ready for work. He was about 3, and, next thing she knew, he was clomping out of the closet wearing the cowboy boots which were a couple of sizes too big. Even though they were big, the toes were normal. I think the toes turn up from storing the shoes without filling the toes with old socks or newspapers and I would hope that Austin's mom would've taken better care of them than that if she meant to hand them down. Eventually, my nephew got big enough that the boots fit him and he wore the boots from the brother he never met until they fell apart. 15 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5517163

GeeGolly August 11, 2019 Share August 11, 2019 Did we discuss someone on Instagram asked Joy if she had a daughter? She replied, "No, those are my nieces". Another person commented that she should recognize Annabelle. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5517673

Popular Post Sew Sumi August 11, 2019 Popular Post Share August 11, 2019 Geez. Let Joy refer to Annabell as she chooses. And if she chooses not to mention her, that's okay, too. 29 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/51212-joy-and-austin-this-one-time-at-family-camp/page/136/#findComment-5517706

Joy just lost a baby, I guarantee her daughter is on her mind 24/7 whether she refers to her publicly or not. In addition, it was fairly obvious from the previous poster's question that they were curious as to Joy's relationship to the little girls in the picture that was posted. There was no reason for Joy to do anything other than explain who the girls were, she chose not to editorialize about her loss and she deserves her privacy. Now, Lauren would've posted a couple of chapters on her loss had someone asked her the same question.
