I pronounce "lure" as "loor", with the o's as kind of a "ew" sound (that I don't know how to represent in text). And, yes, "pour" and "poor" are homonyms, even though "our" is a homonym with "hour". Edited to add: I guess that makes "lure", "poor", and "poor" all homonyms in my world, with the exception of the one starting with L. Their commercials, which tout all kinds of miracle treatments that most insurance companies won't pay for because they're experimental, are why I actually LIKE the commercial raising awareness of pancreatic cancer using disappearing runners. Yeah, it's depressing, but so is the fact that pancreatic cancer research gets so little funding even though it's an incredibly deadly disease. (I tend to take this particular disease personally. friendperidot July 1, 2017 Share July 1, 2017 I'm from KCMO and I worsched things all of my life until at 22 I moved to Washington DC. I also said I was from Missoura, now when I say it, I mean, Show Me. So, to bring it back to commercials, yes, Cathy Mitchell is all over H&I. I started watching that channel last summer, Hill Street Blues, still a good program, then I moved on to NYPD Blue that I had never watched before, some very excellent programs and actors, to now when I start watching Star Trek Deep Space Nine and change the channel 5 hours later before Kung Fu starts unless I'm sound asleep by then. But I've been reading reviews of the red copper pots and pans, mixed, earlier this year I bought a set of Farberware instead and this week I bought a second set as a birthday gift for my brother. But, to try to keep to commercials, she makes some interesting concoctions and I think chocolate chip pancakes sounds disgusting. I'm not a big fan of chocolate (sacrilege, I know, but there you have it). Why anyone would want to melt a plastic cup is beyond me, but then again since I belong to a FB group about making dollhouse miniatures from everyday items, maybe there would be a reason. I've started saving all kinds of used to be trash items. Ah, now a commercial comes on that qualifies for this thread, Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete for Lipozene. It's the friend that walks up to them to tell her story, something about the way she says, "Hi". I don't know what it is about her, but she annoys me. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/45040-commercials-that-annoy-irritate-or-outright-enrage/page/280/#findComment-3420781

There was a whole sharing community built up around genealogy research before they came along. If you got data from your kooky cousin who got her data from one of those "we can prove you're descended from kings, and from there to Adam and Eve!" sites, you double-checked and then didn't pass it along. (No, seriously, she sent Mom that, and the detour into wackjobland happened three generations back - recent enough that Cousin could've driven half an hour to see the gravestone proving her wrong). LilWharveyGal July 3, 2017 Share July 3, 2017 (edited) Just to clarify a bit further, Ancestry essentially provides two services. The first is access to actual official records, such as censuses, birth, marriage, and death records, immigration data, military records, etc. While there can be errors in these records if something was written down incorrectly, I've found them to be generally quite reliable. The second main function Ancestry serves is to provide a platform for building your own family tree. This is where people can enter whatever they want and the quality is questionable. If I wanted to I could create a tree saying that JFK is my father, and Rudolph Valentino was his father, and Billy the Kid was his father, and if the tree is made public that information will pop up for anyone who searches for any of those three individuals. Occasionally I will look at other members' trees if I hit a brick wall, but only as a starting point to do my own research to confirm that what they're saying is true. I'm a very very amateur genealogist and I still have a soft spot for Ancestry. It can be a useful tool but you have to know how to use it. And to get back to the topic, I don't think I've ever seen an Ancestry ad that wasn't annoying! Who the heck says, "Holy crow?" Several years ago, I was out of full-time work and spent a year researching my maternal family while freelancing and looking for work. There were so many people who had created trees in Ancestry that had just copied off each other. It wasn't necessarily right, and was just plain wrong, in some cases that I as an amateur found. My mother and I went to old family graveyards and small-town libraries to research our family. Selfishly, I didn't want to share what I'd found. It was A LOT of work, and I don't want Ancestry profiting from it. There are free tree collectives out there. I haven't worked on it in so long, so I've forgotten what they are. Much of what Ancestry sells can be found for free. It's not easy to get or compile (that's what you're paying for), but it's free. I don't find bickering or nasty-to-each-other humor to be funny at all. Aw, I kinda like those, especially the one where Flo's 'dad' says, "I've got the meat sweats!" 4 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/45040-commercials-that-annoy-irritate-or-outright-enrage/page/280/#findComment-3428672

Not the whole family trees, but actual easy to verify things like birth dates and death dates I would expect. It's not so easy to be sure you've got the right person; that's what Mom (and, I assume, bilgistic) spent all their time on. And this should probably go to the Small Talk thread now. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/45040-commercials-that-annoy-irritate-or-outright-enrage/page/280/#findComment-3428806

bubbls July 4, 2017 Share July 4, 2017 So, Oreo Powers That Be, you want your new product associated with a grunting rapper who makes your commercial sound like something out of a porn flick? Really? Because nothing says yummy Oreos like the sounds of humping and rutting. 9 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/45040-commercials-that-annoy-irritate-or-outright-enrage/page/280/#findComment-3429464

TheNewJanBrady July 5, 2017 Share July 5, 2017 Liquid Plumr commercial with people's actual plumber butts--i.e. ass cracks--showing on national TV. I can't believe they're allowed to show that! 6 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/45040-commercials-that-annoy-irritate-or-outright-enrage/page/280/#findComment-3430033
