I'm really enjoying the "In Memoriam" segment this year. I'm impressed with the choice of more upbeat songs this year, not to mention the use of a choir instead of an individual singer.

Not appreciating this In Memoriam segment. I'd rather the music be a bit more somber and have the photos enlarged. I can barely see the faces on my 32" screen, with them featuring the performers.

WOW. Shocker. I saw that Jada looked really pissed after what Chris said but was not expecting that. And the violence in The Godfather clips was then kind of anticlimactic.

I get that Chris Rock's joke was clearly at the expense of Jada, who clearly didn't agree to it or liked it, and I get being angry over it (I think Jada's talked about feeling insecure over her alopecia) but Will's reaction? Yell at him, fine. Punching him is over the line on live TV.

Will Smith punching Chris Rock followed by an upbeat choir version of Spirit in the Sky over the “In Memoriam” segment is a lot for the 10:30 segment

I would love to see him escorted out and possibly arrested. Chris rock can accept the Oscar on his behalf. Make it good and awkward.

If Jada really does have alopecia, then that joke really was in extremely poor taste, but wow Will's reaction was extreme, if he actually did punch Chris Rock. I thought it was staged at first but then I lipread what  Will said and Chris did appear flustered.

My problem with the In Memorium is it was too fast.  I barely had enough time to read the names on the screen, and I'm a fast reader!

The accountants are backstage with the envelopes. All they have to do is call whoever does the vote tallying and invoke Article 86* to find out if Will's name is in the Best Actor envelope. 

I will say that I am 100% certain that Will's team immediately started texting him to say that the first thing out of his mouth if he wins should be an apology for the punch. If he wins and doesn't apologize he's only going to make it worse.

*Which does not exist to be clear.

I just rewound during the commercials, and he was laughing while Jada was doing an exaggerated eye roll, that’s why I thought it was all a bit at first.

I didn't even make that connection! I thought it was a joke about being in a bad movie, which all actors are sometimes. The ironic thing is, Chris (or the joke writer) would have looked like the jerk for a joke about a physical problem, but now Will looks like the jerk.

I don’t understand how the Academy consistently gets this montage wrong.  You play some poignant and/ or inspirational lyrics-free music as a base, you have no live performers on stage pulling focus from the video, and you splice clips of the deceased with some pull quotes about farewells, life and love from some of their most famous roles.  Boom, you’re done.  There is no need to reinvent the wheel on this particular piece.

Although the joke was in bad taste (and not particularly funny), I was confounded by Jada looking so angry on live tv. She is not that good of actress to act angry if that was a bit.

But then Will went onstage to bitch-slap Chris?

I still cannot believe that actually happened.

Aww, I was rooting for Lin Manuel-Miranda. I did think they picked the right Encanto song to nominate, but unfortunately, they were up against not just a Bond film, but Billie Eilish.

Unless I'm mistaken, that video of the Japanese feed came to us by Timothy Burke. Who is Burke?  He's the guy that has an amazing video capture setup that apparently allows him to grab any television feed, anytime and anywhere on the planet.  First became aware of him when he was working for Deadspin. He does his job exceedly well.

I have to believe the way it played out on the Japanese clip is how it went down.  No acting involved.  I really wasn't paying all that much to the comment that set him off.
