Friends style: The One Where Everything Is Awful

That one Pornstache scene was weird. Even aside from his new look, it felt like a completely different character. How long is he supposed to have been in prison at this point?

No more than six months, right? Maybe 8?

It has to be less than that. If he's in prison from the end of S2, that's four-five months at most, going by Daya still being pregnant.

God, how many generations of fuck-upedness is tucky from? That her mom just lackadaisically told her she was going to get raped from now at what, age 9? She probably kept trying to have something approximating a normal relationship/friendship except predators can home in on her like a bloodhound. Ugh.

It's not Sophia's responsibility to have someone else's child shuttled at their whim. Gloria needs to stop using her as a foil for her own impotence in influencing her son. And what did she expect? She could start shit and walk away and nothing would happen once she turned her back? Not even Red is that stupid at fighting.

One of the things I liked about this storyline was that no one was 100% right. Sophia and Gloria were both feeling insecure as parents and that insecurity caused both of them to be unreasonable. Neither is to blame for the other's problems; but they're locked away from their kids and can't effectively parent them, so they take it out on each other.

Very nice twist of Lorna sending one of her admirers after Christopher. I thought she was sending him after the soft skin nice smelling hair fellow from the beginning of the episode.

It was hard to watch Tiffany get raped twice in back to back scenes. I wonder what happened to her nice, cute boyfriend.

When Piper and Alex show up on screen this show comes to a screeching halt.

Oh Tiffany. That poor girl. Doomed from the start.( Tho the show sure pulled out every " southern white trash" stereotypes in her flash back)

I'd have liked to see a bit of romance for Suzanne.

Poor Pennsatucky. I shouldn't even like her but I do and that is just so sad. I knew that guard was gnarly after that crap in the park.

And I don't care how unbelievable this would be - I want Doggett and Boo to take that piece of crap out. I feel like those ladies would get the job done.

Also - I like Lolly. Made me laugh so much in the beginning with the Alex confrontation.

I thought it was going to be Lusiack for getting Nicki sent away. Especially since they mentioned his brother in law selling the heroin at the beginning of the ep.

Poor Tucky.

I never thought I'd like her but I do - and that was horrible. That dead eye stare.... that is chilling.

Add me to the posters who, at the S1 finale, were probably also cheering as she got her ass pounded by Piper...and, props to Taryn Manning - I just wanted to give her a hug by the end of the thing.  Bravo, Ms. Manning....Bravo!  (Taking a hideous character and believably making you empathize with her is no easy task.)

And that stare was seriously just heart breaking.

Man, poor Tucky. Sadly, it seems she's used to see those things as normal, but I'm hoping she'll tell Boo and Boo will explain a couple of things to  her. On a shallow note,  that redhead guy was HOT.

I'm glad Lori Petty wasn't trying to kill Alex. But wow, she's seriously crazy.

I'm starting to ship Suzanne with that girl and I'm sorry she was too scared to open that door. That girl could be good for her, she looks sweet and honest about her feelings.

I just knew Morello was going to send that guy after poor Christopher.

I feel so bad for Tucky. I hate rape in all forms. It pisses me off.

I agree that Nathan was cute.

Hearing "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" was awesome. I love that song.

I had that feeling about Donut Guy the first time he asked Pennsatucky to drive him on an errand.  I thought he was going to do that to her when they were at the pond.  He's a sadistic $&@*!%^.

She won't turn him in because she is conditioned to believe that is how she is suppose to be treated...hopefully she talks to Boo about it, Boo will set her straight.

I have a sick feeling that her grandpa (he was sitting in the recliner in the flashbacks) began that conditioning - and she learned early just to check out and wait for it to end.

It made me sad for her when the cute guy treated her well ( in comparison to others) and she had no idea how to act.

Taryn Manning has been the best actress on this show from the start.    She outshines the rest.

Took ten episodes, but finally a good one.

And Piper, you fickle, feckless bitch.

Okay Morello setting her latest admirer on Christopher was twisted but I laughed my ass off when the last guy to enter the house wiped his feet first.

Poor Tucky. Bravo to the actress though, great job at turning an intensely unlikeable character in the first season into one of my favourites.

This episode was far too disturbing for me.  I'd rather see people get murdered.   Especially the prison guard.

I noticed that too.  Would the writers be clever enough to write that in, or was that an actor choice?  It was so funny.  I guess it was written in since the cameras paid careful attention to it.

I don't even know why they didn't send the guard by himself. Why did they need a separate driver at all?

But at times they've even sent one guard with two prisoners (taking Rose to chemo), so apparently the minimum in minimum security is taken quite seriously.

Then again, sometimes they send two guards with one prisoner-- get buy party supplies. Van procedure is totally random!

I'm confused, when was Pornstache in this episode?

His mom went to see him in prison to tell him the baby wasn't his. I thought it was a different actor, otherwise he looks completely different in prison.

My fav bit of the "southern white trash" scenes were the 6 or so dudes are having a random mosh pit.

Pennsatucky's boyfriend was insanely dreamy.

And I knew that guard was bad news....when she didn't want to go in the mud a few episodes and he pulled rank and called her inmate. No, no. no. Manning was great in this episode. In general, really.

Agree. Very few of the others are in her league. I'm glad they paired her with Boo so much this season, because I think they have a good chemistry. And I hope Taryn Manning finally gets some of the Emmy attention after this season (if the show continues to get Emmy attention). Nobody else deserves any for S3, in my opinion... although, I did take note of the actress who plays Gloria this season. She's solid. There is just a lot of amateur acting in this show, to be honest (and not just from the actual amateurs... I think Laura Prepon is the worst.)

Even if it's only 4-5 months, he looked pretty beaten up.  He also looked and sounded like he was regressing to being a kid.  Corrections guards don't tend to have a good time in prison.

The funny thing is with Laura Prepon is that it can get way, way, way worse than it is on this show.  Did you ever watch "That 70's Show?"  One of my all time favourite shows, but she was horrible on it.  Showed absolutely zero range, expression, and emotion.  It used to drive me nuts.  On "Orange is the New Black" she's actually shocked me with her acting, how much improved it is.  That's how bad she was on 70's.

Had anyone ever heard the expression "tittin and hairin" before? I'm from rural south Alabama and had never heard it, but I googled it and "titting and hairing" did produce five results, so I guess this is a real saying.

Is it wrong of me that I kind of like that Vinnie guy. He reminds me of the guy from Doogie Howser.

And man do I feel bad for Doggett. I love her and Boo together. I really hope she tells Boo because I have a feeling Boo will protect her.

That was seriously the most attractive man who has ever been on this show.

Seriously. I don't even like long hair on guys, but I was practically transfixed by him. Dayum.

I instantly knew Morello was going to send her thuggish admirers after Christopher. What a psychotic piece of shit she really is under the sweet exterior. I think if I had to pick one character to whom I am most sympathetic, out of literally everyone it would be Christopher.

There was an off-screen rape on Game of Thrones this past season that got the Internet's collectives panties in a twist. Like it was just hysterical whining almost all across the board. Here a character gets raped twice, and the rape is graphically shown. Where's Jezebel's, etc., outrage now? Hmmm.

I think Laura Prepon is the worst.

Hear, hear. That dead monotone is grating in ways I didn't know a monotone could be grating.

Craziest episode ever.
Penn's story is so sad and insane. Completely agree. T.Manning is so great.
Piper, please tell me you're doing this thing on purpose because you've fu**ing lost your mind.(I know it's typical Piper but still, there must be something..)

Alex/Lolly, gosh.

Crazy Eyes, so sweet

and Morello. God, she's out of her mind

After binging on season one of Outlander, I seem to be completely desensitized to rape. I don't think on screen rape has ever been portrayed as gutwrenchingly abominable as it has on that show.

That being said, I think Taryn Manning did an good job with the material she was given. I thought she was a competent enough actress in prior seasons but she's now convinced me she has a bit of range.

I think the problem wrt GoT's rape scene is that the woman's rape was centered around the response of a male character. Tucky's rape was about her, her upbringing, and how she felt. Also, rape storylines in a setting of women's prison, and in circumstances like both Tucky and Daya are revelatory about the welfare of people that the general public rarely thinks about, where a rape scene in a fantasy series that didn't occur in the source material feel unnecessary and gratuitous by comparison.

Also, the producers of GOT have had some weird tone deaf repsonses to the way the way people react to how rape is used on that show. Some argued that the rape of one of the main characters of GOT was being used as some sort of character development/empowerment thing, based on how the producers were talking about it. That's why "internet" panties were in a twist- and the feminist sites (that that one poster seems randomly hostile towards) were reacting to how women are treated on that show in general and how rape is used for shock value.

Tucky's multiple rapes were shown as they were because it demonstrated a depressing pattern in her life. And showed how she never had much agency, even outside of prison.

Taryn Manning has done wonderful work this season.  Tucky was doomed from the start clearly and her mother basically telling her to expect and accept sexual abuse was so heartbreaking.  So her rapes while more graphic than Sansa's, make narrative sense.  It explains her story, it's not used to further a male characters story or to be exploitative.

Oh yeah, I agree that she's always been a terrible actress, but it bothers me more on this show than it did on 70s. Probably just because I didn't give too much of a crap about that show in general but I think she is the worst part about this show, which is a show I generally love. The Alex-Piper relationship is toxic regardless, but it could at least be interestingly toxic if her acting didn't sink all of the scenes Alex is in like an anchor. Well, that and the complete lack of chemistry between her and Taylor Schilling. (She had more with Eric Foreman, IMO! ;)

Wow.  I can't believe I'm actually sympathizing with Dogget this season.  And now what I'm afraid will happen is that she'll get pregnant and want an abortion.  If her "supporters" find out about it, that would be really bad for her.  But her bringing a child into this world -- that would be terrible too.  At least she might be able to stay clean during a pregnancy in prison.  And I certainly wouldn't mind her bringing down that POS guard by naming him as the father.

This episode left a really bad taste in my mouth (as it was intended to do). It was made clear that Coates was a creep when he forced Doggett to "fetch" in the mud, suddenly turning on her, and then forcing himself on her. I thought he was going to rape her there and then. It disappointed me that Doggett fell for his apology, but the flashbacks made it painfully clear that she has been conditioned to expect abuse. So sad. The show has definitely changed the charactwer from her original characterization, and I'm glad of that. S1 Pennsatucky was almost too much of a villain. Taryn Manning is an appealing actress, and I'm glad she's been given something else to play.

I also felt terrible about the way things developed between Sophia and Gloria. Very depressing.

No way did I expect that the name Lorna gave her Vinnie would be Christopher's. Nice way for the show to remind us she's not the sweet ditz she tries to portray.

I have disliked Doggett from the beginning, but I liked that she was at least trying to be honest with the new guard when he first started. She could have manipulated him, lied to him, gotten him in trouble, etc. but instead she showed him where to get the van keys, told him not to leave her alone in the van, and was generally helpful. I thought maybe they would develop a genuine friendship but when he got super weird asking her to fetch something in the mud with her mouth, I was like oh shit, this got creepy really fast and I was afraid for her because obviously the prisoner/guard dynamic is very lopsided. When he seemed genuinely apologetic, I was still a little suspicious but I thought okay, maybe he really is sorry. But nope! He skipped past creepy and went straight to rapey. The blank look on her face of one who endures sexual abuse was so sad.

Wow, Pornstache just isn't Pornstache without the pornstache. And grown men who call their mothers "Mommy" always creep me out. I wonder how normal his brothers really are.

A stacheless pornstache is a sad sight to behold. But yeah, adults who refer to their parents as mommy or daddy totally creep me out.

Taryn Manning is really fantastic in this role. Even if the first season when the character was really horrible and sometimes hard to watch, it was never because of bad acting. She does a great job.

I think her monotone and lack of emotion was actually a good thing in the (not very good) movie Karla
