The Bachelor in the Media

I watched part of the Billion Dollar Buyer show (I was wrong on the name in my post above) that featured Sean and Catherine Lowe (fell asleep towards the end so I don't know how it turned out).  Based on the notes that Catherine wrote to Sean during his Bachelor season, she wants to start a "luxury' stationery brand.  Expensive white linen paper with embossed sayings/expressions on them.  The Billionaire had her make some prototypes which were totally juvenile in their embossed messages.  Her price point was extremely high-wholesale to him at $2.50 per note card.  When he spoke to her about the price she just kept reiterating how luxurious they were.  To sell in gift shops it would be $11.00 per note card.  The focus group had a hard time reading the embossed message.  At one point the billionaire asked the focus group if they would be willing to pay more if they knew it was from the Bachelor couple...

Can you imagine them trying to pitch that overpriced crap on Shark Tank? Mark Cuban and Kevin O'Leary would rip them to shreds.

There was a rerun of the Billion Dollar Buyer and I was able to catch some of the show that I had missed the first time when I fell asleep.  Catherine didn't take constructive criticism or people's comments very well.  Sean was really a non-entity.  The Billionaire really wanted them to emphasize their celebrity and Catherine 'reluctantly' agreed to do so.  I would never buy something just because a former bachelor or contestant had their names on it.  Although I never cared one way or another for the Lowes, I kind of like them less after this episode (well, at least Catherine as she seemed entitled).

I'm less likely to buy something I might have otherwise been interested in if I found out one of the a-hole's from this show was in any way connected to it. I would never, ever, even if I had money to burn buy a sheet of paper that costs $11. Sadly, I can see all the moron hipsters who are too cool for anything wasting their money on it because note cards are old school and texts are for losers.

I'm a graphic designer and an artist and I know several graphic designers (not me) that make most of their money a year from selling luxury level, custom stationary to rich brides and similar. A single invite can cost more than $11 easy. Catherine is also a graphic designer, albeit much more of a connected one than I am (or have ever tried to me-no jealousy or even respect really. It's just what it is). I didn't see this episode but I assume that she's trying to take that luxury graphic design sensibility mainstream and I don't mind. At least she's always been a graphic designer. Her interest in this type of thing didn't start only after she had a platform; unlike those who become handbag and jewelry designers  after they've been nothing but party girls for a couple of seasons of a tv show

I mean, I've been around graphic designers and artists when we're all drooling over pricey paper and old school embossing and so on....And while I don't think anyone really would or should pay $11 for a card in a retail store, I don't fault a designer or artist for getting so excited about product that they forget that or just want to make it work somehow. I think it's more about her not being quite savvy enough than about entitlement. Of course, it could work out somehow and then I'll be like "well, yeah, she knew her niche".

clarity is good

Fair points, @nicgwatchingtv, and I do and have put my money where my mouth is when I say that good graphic design is well worth paying for, and if whatever that graphic design costs ends up working out to $11 apiece for something you've designed specifically for me, that's one thing. Heck, even if it's not a custom design, but it's being individually hand embossed by someone properly paid for their labour on paper hand made by someone also being properly paid, then the price has some justification (heck, at that point, $11 is probably undervaluing it). But for mass-produced notepaper? I agree that it's very likely more clueless than entitled, but it's still pretty monumentally clueless.

There are definitely pieces out there that are worth $11 each, but it's unlikely that the people that would buy something so pricey want something that is tied to the Bachelor nation. I too am a graphic designer, and I get why she wants what she wants, but I'm not sure she can connect the word "Luxury" and Bachelor and be successful.

My local news just did a report on Olivia, one of the b-ettes whom Arie sent home the first night. She is from "here" although she works in Chicago, so that's where she was "from" on the show. She brought him a Matchbox car. She said she cried when she got sent home, but that wasn't shown (she was disappointed!). She said she did not know who The Bach was when she signed up, nor when she got the call-back in April. She said Arie wasn't her type and not someone she would date, although she said he was nice and a gentleman. She didn't mind getting sent home because of that, but she WAS totally bummed about missing the travel with her new friends she made, the other b-ettes. She also said everyone got time with Arie that first night, whether it was one minute or five minutes. She is not watching the show because she can't stand seeing all the travel porn she missed (she did not say porn, that's my word). She especially liked Bekka K (not sure which Bekka/Becca that is) and Caroline for best b-ettes. And while she knows the ending, she is not allowed to say who wins/loses, depending on how you view the ending!

Oh, Olivia also said The Bach was the end of her desire to be a reality star. Ha ha!

Apparently, on Ashley's podcast, Arie talked about the rift with Jef. Supposedly it goes back to Sean and Catherine's wedding and how poorly Jef treated his date. According to Arie, Arie stood up for the date and Jef didn't appreciate it. Jef then got into an argument with Arie and several of the producers. That was the last time they saw one another. The article I read asked about the rumors that Jef hasn't been on any spinoffs despite desperately wanting to, and Arie said he doesn't know why Jef hasn't been cast.

If he was fighting with producers, that would explain it.

ETA: Who was Jef's date to that wedding?

I don't know about some drama with his date but what I've read around the Bachelor Nation grapevine is that Jef tried to bring some strippers into the reception and that pissed off a lot of people. This was later clarified to they weren't necessarily strippers but some not so innocent women. So I guess if he did have a date, that might be the behavior Arie had an issue with - i.e. trying to sneak other women into someone else's wedding reception, while you're there with someone else. Who knows how accurate the whole thing is. That said, considering the stories about Arie and his behavior with girlfriends and ex-girlfriends and what's currently going on with him, I find it rather ironic that this would be the impetus for his friendship with Jef ending. Nah, there's more to that story, IMO.

A one-on-one date on The Bachelor can start in a variety of ways—maybe with a helicopter ride, maybe a trip to a vineyard, or maybe they’re walking deep in the woods and hey what do you know there’s a makeshift hot tub over there—but it almost always ends the same way. The sun has set, and the Bachelor and his date are in different clothes than they were before, and they’ve just finished dinner (by which I mean they sat at a table talking about why they aren’t married yet for 30 minutes while some rubber-looking filet mignon got cold) when the Bachelor says, “I have one more surprise for you.”

“Another surprise?!” the contestant exclaims.

“Do you like so-and-so musician?” the Bachelor asks. He doesn’t say “so-and-so,” really, but he might as well, because the musician he names is never a musician anyone participating in modern culture has ever heard of. (Case in point: This past Monday, Arie Luyendyk Jr. took his date Seinne to see something called “LANCO.”)

“I do!” the contestant responds, lying.

And then they dance while the anonymous musician plays a ballad 10 to 15 feet away from them. It’s sooo romantic.

I'm not sure where Instagram posts belong, so I'm putting this here.  I had no idea Krystal did those fitness competitions (this post is from 2015).  Glad to see her admit that some unhealthy behavior contributed to her looking like this...

Disgusting. For the life of me, I can't see what anyone could find attractive about popping veins, bulging muscles, and a spray tan that's six shades darker than the person's natural skin tone.

"As for the American stars: Some of their first reactions to show’s global twist were hesitant. “I’ll be honest,” Ashley Iaconetti, who has also appeared on “The Bachelor” and “Bachelor in Paradise,” said by phone. “My first thought when I heard was, ‘Darn, I’m not going to be with all my friends.’”

I've put in a forum request for the show!  I'll let y'all know when it's been made.

It’s not the working out, That is the problem, it’s the cutting they do I think a month out from competition.  I once got in that shape and was encouraged to compete, but even down at 98 lbs I have a fat layer like a seal, so I gave up the dream.  You have to diet down and dehydrate yourself to get the striation and vascularity.  She’s right that it’s not healthy.

A woman where I work does those competitions. For months before hand she eats nothing but boiled chicken, it smells DISUGSTING, and then days before goes without anything, even water. It's horrible. She also turns into a massive bitch because she's starving and dehydrated. IDK why anyone would put themselves through that.

You're so lucky  to have that, it will keep you looking young so much longer.  I really dislike the look Krystal goes for, not only stringy and veiny in the body but it makes her face look strained and prematurely wrinkled.  I also hate that her type is so often described as "fit," when it's unhealthy and not really fit for much of anything but posing.

Ashley I needs to get a real job. Add Clare to that statement.

For some reason I kind of love both of those silly women. In spite of all the tears, they can still laugh at themselves, and I think they are two of the most beautiful Bachelor alumni. I would watch a reality show of the two of them running a hair and cosmetics salon, with lots of funny clients looking for make-overs and raccoon-style romance advice.

Clare is one of my all time favorite contestants on any version of this show. Along with Onion Ashley. I guess I like em crazy. HAHA

Ashley I, OTOH, can go crawl into a hole with Corrinne and Krystal and never come out again. They can take Chad with them. UGH

I despise Ashley I.  But I can’t fault her for cashing in on Bachelor nation shit.  I would too.  Still can’t stand her though.

But I love Futuristic Krystal!  She’s too deluded to be acting.  I am and always have been pro wrong reason.

Didn't know if anyone had seen this--seems Bekah had been reported missing:  https://www.northcoastjournal.com/NewsBlog/archives/2018/02/01/not-missing-in-humboldt-bachelor-contestant-bekah-martinez

I just saw this and came here to post about it!  Bizarre.  Did she not tell her mother she was leaving to film the show?  And/or use "going to work on a pot farm" as the excuse?  Huh?

Wow. That says a lot that “going to work on a pot farm” is the COVER-UP story she tells her mom instead of saying she’s going on The Bachelor. Hahaha! But maybe Bekah has a “tragic origin” story herself. I’m going with child of a “hippie mom” who parties too hard and was never there for her; that’s why she grew up fast for her young age and became a nanny to be the mother figure she wished she had. The fact that the mom went to the police in the middle of the night and then “forgot” to follow up with them that she’s okay—or maybe knew all along she was on The Bachelor— leads me to believe she might not have been in sound mind at the time. very strange!

OMG that mug shot of Baby Bekah! Arie, look at the prestyled “most interesting person you’ve ever met” looks like! Please Show, give us a reenactment of her marijuana farm job.

I wonder how long ago the missing person picture was taken. There's quite a difference in attractiveness between that and her current look.
