My husband and I are HUGE Honda lovers. The first ones we bought, we traded in after 8 years. Never had one issue or recalls. They were the Civic Si's that are sport vehicle and come in manual only. LOVED them. Only traded them in for the 2015 model as it was a special type and we wanted to jump in on them. Then we traded those in in March for Civic EXT(we got manual, it's all we like to drive)and LOVE this car too. We only traded in our Si's because my husband is going to have to drive an hour to work come January and we needed cars that could take regular gas and have better milage. The Si's only can have premium gas and being the sporty version, didn't get the greatest milage. We live with in 10 minutes of every store, so milage wasn't a big deal until now. I don't see us ever changing from Honda's.

How are all your medical problems coming along? Sorry, I forgot what exactly you ended up having re: broken bones in your foot/ankle but i think about you. You are like my mother's friend who can turn a serious situation into something funny, sometimes without even trying.  I love all your stories no matter what the topic.

My suggestion if buying a new vehicle, do not buy a first year model. I bought a Chevy Equinox the first year they came out. Loved it, rode well, got me through the snow, was just the right size for my needs. However, it was in for recalls many times, a big inconvenience, even though I got a loaner each time.

I really do adore my Tiguan, never had even a smidgeon of a problem.   But like I say, apparently I accidentally bought that one oddball...

a car story:

i was upstairs in my office (back when I had a “real” job ?).  My husband and I own a bus repair shop just off the expressway below Atlanta.  We’re on an access road.  I’m not sure why - have never understood this, but our road has always been a magnet for serious wrecks.  Always.  My husband has worked in that building his whole adult life except for the Navy, and diesel mechanic school.  At least once a year, there’s a total smash up, generally right in front of our building.  It’s kind of creepy.   Life-flighting victims out kind of bad. 

I’m upstairs working (or maybe playing solitaire, I forget).  Suddenly I hear this terrible, screeching banging horn blowing nastiness.  I jump up and run downstairs, all our techs are out in the yard with their hands up in that crazy way you do when you see the train going over the cliff.  At the time, I had a pewter grey Jeep Grand Cherokee that was my absolute FAVORITE car I ever owned.  I loved that car.  There was never a comfort invented not on that car.  I used to joke that it came with a little Swede who popped out with an umbrella to keep my windshield dry when it rained (like an alpine clock).  That car was the shizzle.

Here’s what happened.  A girl (18) is driving along that access road nearing our building.  She had a small dog in the car with her, and I’m guessing that was a contributing factor.  Her wheels slipped off the road on the passenger side.  She lost control enough to hit the guy wire that steadies a telephone pole, which started her spinning.  I’m also guessing that instead of hitting the brake, she had her foot on the gas.  About 100 feet later, she went thru a ditch on our side of the road and thru a chain link fence.  She sent 3 poles flying.  She missed the corner of our building by 3 inches, cleared the small parking area, hit my car, my husbands car, a BUS and the other side of the fence, where she finally stopped, the fence wrapped around her front end like sandwich wrap.  Minutes later, we’re all at her car, thinking another life-flight moment... she gets out absolutely unscathed.  Not a scratch.  (Dog wasn’t hurt either, although he peed all over the place).   Her drink was still in the cup holder.  The interior was completely intact.  Was it a Hummer, you ask?  Oh nay, nay!  A Ford Focus.  True story.

i had just paid off my car.  I didn’t even have the title back yet.  My husband was patting my back, telling me to go back inside, “you don’t want to see this” kind of thing.  It was totaled.   She hit that bigass Jeep so hard she bent the frame.  It was so jacked up, I couldn’t even reach the top.  Anyway, I always thought my husband wasn’t trying to get me inside to spare my “feelings”.  He wanted me inside to keep me from punching her in the throat.  (Jk, totally non violent....but I surely did love that car).

Re car talk.  I have heard fantastic things about Subaru's.  My MIL has an outback and my coworker just bought  a Forester (my sister has one of their wagon's also but I cannot remember which one).  My coworker had a Honda that lived a nice long life (it was an 02) but kept having issues the last few years so she bought this new one.  She loves it.  When her Honda kept breaking down the tow truck driver told her he never has to tow Subaru's which sealed her decision.

 We've always owned GM vehicles but are thinking about changing to Subaru for our next car. My daughter has owned 2 of them and absolutely adores them. My husband, who is a master mechanic, has ridden in her car several times and is very impressed.

I’m on my second Subaru Outback (the first was 12 years old when we traded it in for a new one). It’s a 2010 and it hasn’t had any issues, just the regular maintenance (I’m fanatical about maintenance). My mother in law has had Subarus for the last 30 years, and just got a Cross Trek a few months ago - she loves it.

Maybe so but I am mad at Toyota because they didn't come forward when they had that brake issue, brakes that failed, and a man went to prison for manslaughter I think, until some type of innocence project found out about Toyota knowing the brake failure was an issue and suppressing it.  Of course I could have some facts wrong.  But, I have a Jetta now which I like, and know that VW wasn't forthcoming about emissions and fuel economy.  I found that out afterwards.  I had a Honda before the VW that I loved, but, after 11 years it had some issues.  Also, Honda didn't take responsibility for drive train issues in some Accords that were documented but they wouldn't deal.  So, I guess, find a car that works and go with it.  I want Mr. lookeyloo to get a Subaru Forester next.  I drove one before I settled on my Jetta.  My best friend replaced her Highlander with a Forester and so did another friend I made the recommendation to.  Both of them say "best car ever".

I don't know where to put this, so here goes.  We were in North Georgia today at an air show.  Walking along minding our own business when I almost bumped into a young woman that is the double of Kendra Caldwell Duggar!  Honestly, I was looking for Joe, because I was Sure it was Kendra.  But, alas, she was with a guy probably her spouse.  Girl had long hair, a pink baseball cap, Kendra face.  All this happened in a  split second.  I watched as they walked away.

I made the huge mistake of buying a first-year Toyota Highlander.  Worst car I ever had.  Nothing but problems, including having the air conditioner back up and flood the inside of the car.  I ended up having to add Freeon every 6 months because there was a leak under the dash that no one could find.  Started driving Hondas in 1981, and still do, except for the one Toyota. I started with the 1981 Civic hatchback, moved to the accord wagon (I wish they still made that model), and I'm driving my second CRV now.  Never a mechanical problem ever.  They just keep going.  I also found out how well they are built when I was hit from the side.  Crumple zones worked perfectly.

Full disclosure. My Toyota Highlander was bought off of a lease. It was 2 years old. We bought it off of Husband’s boss’s wife. Husband’s boss is a mechanic. Owns the shop that Husband has worked at for a million years. Husband knew that vehicle. I have had that Highlander for 10 years now and it is the best vehicle I have ever had!

Still no news. My mom is holding out hope that she is lost, hurt, and unable to contact anyone. The rest of us and the police are pretty sure the worst has happened. Not knowing is the second worst part, the worst part is that she asked for help from a sibling who refused because every time before the money was spent on drugs or gambling. While none of the rest of us blame the sibling and all of us probably would have responded in the same manner, my sibling is spiraling into massive depression.

Actually, the worst part of this is that I'm pretty sure the ex-boyfriend beat my sister to death and that her last moments were filled with pain and terror.

@Nysha That’s horrible to hear.  I also feel badly for your sibling and hope that he/she doesn’t blame themselves. Although I still hope and pray for a better outcome, my heart goes out to you (and yours) in the meantime, the just not knowing or thinking/feeling if the worst has happened.

@MargeGunderson, I have a 2012 Subaru Outback, my third Outback since 1998. I used to commute 55 miles a day RT to work, so I piled the miles on the first two of them. Only issue ever, was a bad water pump in the first one (warranty repair). They aren't exciting cars but dangit they just keep on going and going.

@Jeeves, Subarus are the Energizer bunnies of the car world! I don’t commute in mine (public transportation) so my first only had 65,000 miles on it when we traded it in (45,000 of those from the first owner) and my current one only has 46,000 at 8 years. I want to keep it for 4 more years, at which point I hope to have enough saved to buy a new one outright.

I loved loved my Hyundai Santa Fe aka "The Big Rig."  Besides basic maintenance,  it never had any problems.  My son has a Hyundai Elantra which he loves & has had no problems with either. 

Anyone out there remember the Gremlin?  Think it was built by AMC.  I had my heart set on one of those ugly  looking cars growing up.  My first car ended up being a used Mustang which I swore someone dropped its carburetor before installing it.  It hated starting & staying started on  rainy days but don't we all?  Finally found a good mechanic who fixed the problem.

My father was a fan of the never buying the first year of a new model.  I forgot all about that. 

My BIL & SIL's driveway  looks like a Honda dealership. They  lean towards the SUVs.   I drove a Honda smaller sedan once as a rental (don't remember model) & wasnt impressed.  Maybe it was me. 

Now for Mr. Barb-  I think he's owned or leased everything out there.  He's the kind of person that gets a new car every couple years except he's been slowing down as he gets older.  I, on the other hand,  will drive mine til the end of time.  I think I've passed that trait onto Son of Barb.

My other BIL is in sales and drives long distances.  He has a Ford Edge & loves it.

I’m also in the market for a new car. I did get a Mazda6 in January and love it except that I’m so small that it ended up cutting me behind my legs as the seat is too long. It’s also hard for me to see over the dash unless I’m ramrod straight.  It’s very painful for me to drive it over a hour and it takes me t least that long to get to my daughter’s house. I tried Subarus. My brother’s family has a few of them but again I’m too small to see over the dashboard and get close enough to reach the pedals and I feel awkward with the steering wheel too close. I’ve been in a vehicle when the airbag deployed and OUCH. I’m going looking at something tomorrow. I hate that what I buy has to be based on fit and not type or model. My daughter has a Honda Pilot and loves it. Lots of room for the 3 kids and stuff. Lots of stuff especially sports stuff.

Have you tried driving while sitting on a memory foam pillow?  I have lower spine issues and drive sitting on a donut shaped memory foam pillow and not only can I drive much longer without being in agony, but I also sit up much higher.  I never drive without it.  It would also help with the seat cutting into your thighs, since you would be sitting higher and your legs would be at a different angle.

It’s not my thighs. It’s my lower leg just above the calf muscle. Still that’s a good suggestion and I may try that out if can’t find another car that fits me better. (I still need to get away farther from the steering wheel).

The Gremlin thing reminds me of way back in a class in high school - and I forget what point this was supposed to illustrate, being asked, as a class,, to write down the name of our dream car on a secret ballot, and the teacher then tabulated all the answers. Everyone else wrote Rolls Royces or Corvettes or other such vehicles. My first car was actually a little Horizon (Plymouth?) hatchback that my parents passed down to me. He was named Schnapps. When I was thrilled just to have any sort of car as my own, a friend of mine was ooh-ing and aah-ing over some sort of Mercedes or something, and I asked her what was wrong with my car. "Nothing", she answered, "but who wants Schnapps when they can have Champagne?". And the name stuck. 

All that being said, I have always had a soft spot for Jaguars. I think it's mainly because of the hood ornaments. Our next-door-neighbors had one when I was a kid, and I always used to pet that sleek silver cat. A couple of years ago, my son managed to find me my very own Jaguar hood ornament for Christmas! Now I don't need the car!

Just thought I would shaee my own car stories.  My first car was a Ford Pinto that I inherited from my dad.  The WORST car ever built.  My Pinto had a carbuerator whose 'butterfly ' would stick frequently.  I carried an old pot handle to stick in the carb so I could start it.  This car also had a missing tooth in the flywheel.  If it got stuck, you had put on gloves, grab the fan blade and manually turn it until it clicked.

I bought another Ford (a Thunderbird) after that.  I will never buy another Ford again.  Since then, I owned a Plymouth Duster--great car that I bought very used (150,000 miles) and drove for a few years--got me through chemotherapy and radiation.  

Since then, I've owned 4 Toyota Corollas.  The 1981 model I bought used.  The 1984 and 1993 I inherited from my mom.

Get a Mazda CX-5!!! I have a red one, and it is my dream car! She's sassy, so I named her Roxie. Sporty, fun, drives like a dream, no problems ever. I can't imagine ever having anything other than an SUV anymore! Roxie has spoiled me. 

Went to the doctor on Thursday, and I feel like it's very promising so far! I haven't gained any more since I went to the gyno in April, and they didn't look back any further, but I know I've stayed steady. I feel like I'm slightly thinner than I was in April, because I've been working out a lot more lately...not currently working has some benefits. ? Plus I'm not living in fear. I think I've gone down a little, because my clothes fit better than they did then, but the muscle weighs more. Anyhoo, the doctor really took it seriously and was attentive, and ordered a lot of tests. I had my bloodwork Friday, so now just waiting for answers! I feel like she actually will work with me to find out what's wrong. It's encouraging to finally take action! I'm bad sometimes about feeling like I can fix things myself, if I just give it a little longer. 

Hahahaha I was trying on a dress I wore at my normal weight that I thought might fit, and I need to lose a little before I'd feel totally comfortable wearing it out in public (mayyyyybe I could with a coat lol)...but it was tight enough to get a good "bump" progress picture for my PTV friends! Oh, how my beautiful food baby is coming along so nicely after such a long food pregnancy. You guys keep me laughing!!! Month 22...your food baby is the size of a melon. ???

Sign me up as a fellow Honda lover. I've had 3 cars in my driving career--all Hondas. 2 Accords and 1 CRV. Drove one Accord until it finally died and the other until a deer totaled it. The CRV has withstood wildlife better so far. I love how smoothly they handle the road and have always found them reliable. When this CRV finally bites the dust, the next vehicle will be a Honda too. My family owns a lot of Toyotas, and though they're tough and reliable, even the relatives concede my Hondas handle the road better and are a more comfortable ride.

In feline care news I saw Mr Norris (18yrs old male neutered cat) urinating outside of the litter box. I hope he’s not sick. Sometimes he will MISS the box these days (I have those mats around the box in case that happens) but he was in another room entirely. 

I cleaned it out, if he does it again I’ll take him to the vet on Saturday. The last few days I had seen a puddle on the floor in the morning and thought the roof was leaking! (Silly me) Then I wondered if it was him. (Multi cat household) 

I’ve only seen him do that when the litter is filthy(cause id been slacking) or too low. (I refilled it after I cleaned it and put in my scoops of baking soda) No new changes to his routine, he’s acting normal otherwise- these days he sleeps, eats, litter box and back to the sofa. 

 

The floor is fine, I mopped it up with paper towels, vinegar and baking soda in the spot.  He’s just an old guy...

Oh geez, do I hear this. My 18.5 year-old kitten has gotten cantankerous in her old age. I saw her pee on our inside doormat several months ago, took her to the vet, and everything is fine other than early-stage kidney disease (pretty inevitable at her age). She kept targeting the doormat, so I took it up. She changed to a wool rug in our half bath. Argh. I have gone the can't-beat-'em-join-'em route and now have washable pee pads in our foyer, which she has adopted (I do think she is still using the litterbox sometimes). If we don't have houseguests for X-mas, I think we will relent and put a litterbox in our guest bath on the top floor so she doesn't have to go down two floors to get to it (she is not infirm, just old and sometimes lazy. And my lovebug.).

I own a 2 flat (or a duplex as they are called in certain parts of the country), and live on the second floor (my Mom and sister live downstairs), so he only has to navigate one floor. I have two litter boxes for three cats, I may get another. Of course I don’t want him in pain or suffering, but at 18 I’m not going to try to reinvent the wheel, I know somethings are just due to aging. I’ll keep you guys updated. At least I know I don’t have a leaky roof!!
