The Bachelorette in the Media

Distorted-faced Kaitlyn and giggly-giggly Tayshia need to go.

Last season, they brought in frozen-filler-faced Jojo, which was distracting enough.

Kaitlyn looks like a caricature of her former self.  Barely only recognizable via those oddly placed bird tattoos on the backs of her arms.

I thought Tayshia was a natural.  Kaitlyn, who I don't have any history with, not so much.  They only need one host.

Ratings have been going down in general for this franchise.  Some viewers might be staying away because of no Chris but it's probably mostly due to a natural erosion.

Tayshia's totally suited for this kind of thing, she's bubbly and non-controversial.

As far as the ratings, I had no idea this was premiering. Like someone else said, I watch mostly streaming so I don't see the promos and my interest has waned over the years.

Chris H doesn't hold that much appeal for me, his stilted conversations with the lead plus the Captain Obvious "this is the final rose" appearances don't add that much to my viewing experience.

I have a vague memory that the Bachelorette season is split between 2 leads, how is that going to work?

That was the original guess when we heard there would be two leads but assumed there'd still only be one season.

But there's actually going to be two seasons of The Bachelorette this year.  Katie's is going first and Michelle Young's will film this summer and air this fall.

I saw the dating game show too but having never watched that show before was wondering whether there’s even a reward at the end. Seemed like it just cut off after the victor was selected like they’d never see each other again. Are they given a paid date? Do they just figure it out for themselves like in the real world? This should probably be on another forum but I’m too lazy to look for it.

It's a lot like the original, from what I remember, and really not much sleazier. Hannah was actually kind of sweet. What I liked best was Michael Bolton singing.

Kaitlyn is starting to resemble Jocelyn Wildenstein, the cat lady of Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Interesting article about Chris Harrison and Katie refusing to do the show if he were the host. https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/chris-harrison-bachelor-exit-payout-1235000029/

The article says that his total payout was around $10M, and that he was making $5M/year as host, which sounds more realistic than numbers that have previously been reported. He got two years' worth of pay to go away quietly.

I'm surprised that Katie's alleged refusal to participate if CH was the host carried so much weight. My understanding is that prospective leads don't have a ton of negotiating power, unless they have a huge fan base like Emily Maynard did.

Yes! That part surprised me too since I didn’t know anyone was clamoring to have Katie as Bachelorette. I was pretty ambivalent about the choice myself and am just watching mainly out of habit.

I think that was just an easy out for ABC. Everything is very reactionary today …

I think it was a culmination of a lot of former contestants coming out against Chris, Strahan's reaction to his Chris interview and Katie saying this.

I think Katie's "power" came in the fact that the controversy blew up towards the end of Matt's season on air and somewhat close to when filming for the next season of The Bachelorette was set to begin.  Katie backing out would have been another PR nightmare.  They might have had to even recast some of the contestants meant to give her a love story.

And I'm impressed if she did that because I think Chris could absolutely not host Michelle's season of The Bachelorette. The longer he stayed away; the easier he'd be to replace.

Poor Kaitlin! She hates the fact that women are talking about the way she looks. Given her fame whore tendency, I bet she will hate it even more when we stop talking about her.  She was never a beauty, but now, she looks horrific.  Her next reality show should be “Botched”.

I actually think she looked adorable Before.

She looks awful now.  I cringe every time I see the way she tries to express any emotion, as her face moves in different directions.

Sorry, Kaitlyn.  If you didn't want to be talked about, then honey, don't do stuff that will be talked about.

Yup. When she was on DWTS she staged pictures of herself fake-crying because of all the mean things the trolls were saying about her. The day the comments stop is when she'll start crying for real.

Rachel Lindsay has a revealing article up about what it has been like as the first black bachelorette.  It's sad what she had to go through.  I hope things get better for Michelle's season with all the tea out there.

https://www.vulture.com/article/rachel-lindsay-the-bachelor-franchise.html

For someone who said that she's "stepped away" from the franchise, she sure still loves to talk about it when it gets her publicity. She makes some valid points, and I was on her side during the CH interview debacle, but she's just as much of a famewhore as anyone else on the show, and way too full of herself. She says she signed up for The Bachelor because:

Quote

I was 31 years old, and I had achieved everything I wanted careerwise.

And of course none of Rachel's stories are ever complete without another dig at Peter Kraus:

Quote

Peter, meanwhile, was the audience favorite. But if you looked closely, he didn’t offer anything other than being a fine physical specimen. He fit the prototype of a Bachelor Nation contestant. Because Bachelor Nation applauds mediocrity.

Yeah, Peter really got under her skin.  Unfortunately, for her, he didn't get under anything else. 😏

I wonder how her marriage is going, and is she still practicing law?  Because it seems to me she'd want to concentrate on her marriage and career instead of trying to cash in on a franchise she supposedly doesn't even like.

I'm sorry.  But unless you were living in the 16th century what attorney could say that they had achieved everything they wanted "careerwise" by the age of 31?

Did Peter murder her dog or something? It's so strange how caught up on him she still is when, unlike most final 2-3 contestants on a popular season, he completely disappeared from the Bachelor realm and is back living his normal life in his old hometown.

It's interesting how one's lived identity really can influence how one see's things. I remember watching Rachel's after the rose episode and thinking it had a lot of racist undertones. Peter used a lot of racist coded language as did Chris Harrison. I think Rachel continues to bring up Peter because it was so blatant.

And many will never get it because as you noted, it's not their lived experience. So for some it'll always be viewed through the lens of "why is she still so hung up on him if she's so happy, why is she still talking about him when everyone's moved on."

Except just last year, when the Hannah saga happened with her use of the n-word and Rachel commented on it, that conversation quickly devolved into "I don't like Rachel either for how she mistreated Peter at the ATFR and was so cruel to him and robbed him of his chance to be the Bachelor."

Again, the conversation was about Hannah Brown's using the n-word but somehow it got shifted into rehash 10,000 of how Rachel was somehow the bad guy who maligned and attacked Peter during her ATFR.

So much as some would like to insist everyone's moved on and claim Rachel is the only one so hung up on this, a quick glance around Bachelor Nation will prove otherwise. Since to this day she is very much considered by many in Bachelor Nation, the mean, angry woman who attacked Peter's woobie, delicate feelings at the ATFR and denied him his right to be the next Bachelor.

Oh and the read about BN and their applauding mediocrity is on point. See Hannah Brown's success with fans of the show. Hell, I like Tyler C. but even the cult like fanaticism around him during Hannah's season was telling. A hot guy who was simply respectful and viewers acted like this man hung the moon. It's like the bar is just so low for many of these people.

You can tell the ratings are down by the lack of posting on boards like these, and others.

No one seems to care that this show is even still on.

Maybe when Michelle's season starts, as she is more of a fan favorite, but quite honestly, I didn't like her very much, nor did I like Katie.  Neither has the appeal of someone I'd want to watch.

So they build in this villain-stupid snarky stuff in hopes of keeping viewers tuned in, but even that shtick has gone stale.

Michelle is more the fan favourite?  If that is so then why the hell am I suffering through Katie's season first, or at all?

Yes, that's my understanding, but because Michelle went farther than Katie, they were able to get Katie's season started sooner.

I don't care for either.  I haven't cared much for any contestant in a very long time.  Sean Lowe might be the only "real" contestant, other than Trista, the original Bachelorette, that I can say I truly liked.

I'm just here so I can watch & share snark!  😀

Well I'm glad to hear that because I agree with the "fans".  I was excited for Michelle's season, Katie -- bleh!  Not so much!  What place did she come in, 7th, 9th?  She was basically the Karl of her season and she gets her own?

I see Katie as a filler because Michelle probably needed to finish out the school year. I don’t know why they didn’t just wait unless they needed more guys for BIP. I wouldn’t be surprised though if they didn’t want to have three African American cast members in a row, given the history.

Because the earlier filming would have taken place during the school year and Michelle didn't want to take more time off away from her students.

I've read that the reasons for having Katie's season first and Michelle's season second are that since Katie was eliminated much earlier, they were simply able to start filming sooner.  And that yes, Michelle needed to finish out the school year.

When Katie was filming, it was still height of pandemic, so they were able to screen and test all the contestants and start filming in complete privacy at that resort.  ABC figured, we have this camera crew sitting around, and the resort is empty, so let's just start filming.

I'm not a small business owner so I'm probably missing something, but this seems frivolous to me since none of their businesses provide essential services.

That really makes me annoyed. Small business owners all over the country, especially bars and restaurants, could not get these loans, even tho they were the intended recipients.

Lots of local restaurants and other small businesses are closed now… Small business owners are struggling and lots of people lost their jobs.

So good to know these suffering hypocrites got much need relief.

The businesses didn't have to provide "essential services" however the PPP money was to be used for payroll, ie Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

None of them had employees to pay.

Tayshia is spinning it that she used the money to hire someone who was unemployed. Well, that is not what the loans were set up for. They were to pay existing employees when the business couldn't because they weren't making money due to Covid.

Why not end the PR nightmare and pay the loan back? Because likely the loans will be forgiven and they are all greedy taking taxpayer money.
