S18.E05: When the Going Gets Tough

I was surprised when Christine mentioned the townhouse next to her was for sale or for rent (I can't remember) and Janelle said she would not move  to Utah b/c she's so connected to Flagstaff.

I get that Savannah was still in school when this was filmed but they only lived there since 2018. How connected can they be? It's not like Flagstaff is her childhood home. I say MOVE next to Christine! Have the time of your life! That's a show I would watch.

I was waiting for Savannah to jump and say, yes, I would love to move.

It was the middle of Savanah's junior year, I think. Right?

She graduated high school in 2023, so Christmas 2021/January 2022 would have been midway through 11th grade. Savanah might have only been in Flagstaff three years or so at that point, but those are three pretty big years for a high school kid.

Also, Gabriel and Garrison are (I think) in the Flagstaff area. Logan is in Vegas.

Hunter was on the East Coast, I think and EDIT now he's in Vegas, too.

Maddie is in North Carolina.

Most of Christine's kids landed in Utah. At the time she moved back, it was everyone but Gwen (and Ysabel, who was with Maddie at that point, I think). It made sense that Christine and Truely went there. I think it's a less obvious choice for Janelle.

I found it interesting that Christine said she will never be Robyn's friend, after having previously said that she thought the whole family could still get together for holidays and such.

To me that isn't a contradiction.  I get together with a lot of people for holidays that I wouldn't call friends.  They may be family or friends of family.  Just not being a friend can be neutral and doesn't have to be sworn enemies.

This family has been messed up for long time, and it's not just because of Robyn. Christine was never cut out for polygamy, and Kody has despised Meri for years and years. Janelle may have only stayed for religion and free childcare. You almost never hear them say any of them ever loved each other.

Polygamy only works when people are willing to pretend.  It also works for some when the wives are bonded with each other to provide the emotional support they need. Kody pitted his wives against each other and stirred up drama.

I don't think there is a lot of modest housing in Flagstaff, which is part of why Janelle didn't find a new rental, when that little ranch house she rented went on sale (I mean, aside from her wanting to force Kody's hand to pay off the Coyote Pass loan, so they could build).

In one episode (earlier on during their time in Flagstaff), one of the Browns said that that enormous house that Meri rented didn't cost much more per month than the modest ranch Janelle rented.

IIRC that was Meri's second home in Flagstaff - the one with the elevator and waterfall after she got asked to leave the first one. The home currently on is her third rental home there. When Robin and Meri had the argument on Coyote Pass in a past season they both stormed off saying they had to go look for a rental.

And honestly I personally have a really hard time believing that Meri's second was not that much more than Janele's ranch rental. If you go back to Vegas Meri always had to have a bigger rental, a bigger house, etc.

And the fact I can recall this is really sad...

Kody said something unintelligible in a subsequent talking head about "sending a message to the other wives" about something.  My guess is that he and Robyn had a falling out and he was punishing her.

Impossible. Haven’t you heard, Robyn has approached everyone with her “hat in her hand” since the first day she showed up? Yep. Hat in hand and fake tears coming out of those eyes.

Believe it or not the elevator house was $2,975, and Janelle’s was $2,850.

It would be nice if one of the  kids could actually go to all four years of high school at one school.  Logan, Aspen, Leon, Hunter, Maddie, Gabe and I forget how many others  sure didn’t get to.   There would only be a few who either went to all four years at Vegas or all 4 years at Flagstaff.

Just did a quick search for Flagstaff rentals out of sheer curiosity.  You can definitely rent relatively modest houses for $2000 (a few even for less), with the highest listing at $8000.

As for Meri's house; wasn't it listed only a couple of months ago for almost $6000 a month?  I wonder where the $2900 from a few years back came from, which really seems low for such a house in that area.

But what does Kod do that he needs an office? I'm seriously asking. Does he work?

Based on personal experience from family members with offices that don’t need them: It gives them a sense of power as they are the only family member with a dedicated space that others are banned from using, and it gives them a false sense of importance because what they do is so mission critical it can’t be done at the kitchen table on a laptop like everyone else.  As for what they actually do: annoy the shit out of everyone else forwarding junk emails and memes, and/or porn.

I agree. With a crowd that is around 20 people, you aren't going to be friends with all of them.  I have 23 cousins and while I like them all fine, there are those I am closer to than others and one I really don't care for.  But we all manage to have an enjoyable time when we are together.  Christine and Sobbyn didn't need to be friends, just behave like adults around each other.

The elevator house sold for $810,000 after she moved out. Then it sold in 2021 for $1,465,000.

The one she’s currently shown in on the show they tried to get $5,800 but they have now lowered it to $4,500, that’s what Meri was paying when she lived there.

I'll concur. I don't have nearly that many relatives around for the holidays; usually around 10-12. My wife's side of the family is even smaller. We usually have 8 people for Christmas festivities there. I can't stand my sister-in-law, and I've now made it through more than a decade of Christmases without having to say more than "hello" to her.

Just watched this and playing catch up. OMG the amateur theatrics from Robyn. Histrionics. Over the top even for her. Her neck looks better though it pains me to say that.

It’s challenging for me to see anything good about a man who has 6 children each with two women and can’t find it in his heart to be even civil.

In her Live Watch of S18.E05, Mykelti just said that she asked Robyn not to invite Meri for second Christmas.

My guess is it won’t take long for Kody to be out looking for a replacement for eyebrows.

Good luck to him finding a replacement. Even if a potential bride had never watched the show, normal curiosity would drive her to look up past episodes.

If she still wanted to proceed after she sees the kind if asshole he is, she is the type of woman he deserves.

It seems with all of these reality shows that they start making .money and the original premise of the show is ruined. They all used to live in the same house and we saw the real plural marriage. Then they got the big bucks and got separate huge houses etc. This is not the plural marriage the show started with.

Chalk this up to another TLC crash and burn: Jon & Kate, Roloffs, Duggars, Plaths, not to mention a raft of other "reality" TV shows on other cable channels. I keep wondering why these families think filming their day to day lives is going to be a cakewalk, and only enhance their relationships. I also keep wondering why I tune in every week...

For those wondering what the douche does for a living, Google it. It's out there. There was a hint in this episode when the were zooming in on the outside of the McMansion.

I thought a lot of the outdoor exchanges between Sobbin, Meri, and Koduche were in the McMansion back yard, not Meri's.

Can we move past Christmas 2 years ago and jump into more real time? I think we have beaten Christmas to death and it time to sit back and watch this house of cards finish imploding? Then I want the Christine and Janelle show!!

She doesn't really have to be friends with Robyn to still gather with the larger family for holidays. There's a bazillion of them; they could spend Christmas together and never say more than "hello" to each other.

But Christine also said in a previous episode that she will never go to Robyn's house, and she isn't inviting certain adults and kids to her birthday party. I'm not saying I blame her for that, but she isn't giving off the vibe of someone who would actually be willing to sit through a holiday with Kody, Robyn, Meri, and certain kids. It seems like she said it so she could come off as more mature than them, but she would never really do it. Just like Kody will never actually show up with a Christmas present for Savannah. These people say things to look good on camera, but it's often bullshit.

regarding Meri's houses over the years - gotta say, recent revelations have me reconsidering my attitude towards her.

Janelle operated the way I always thought Meri should have - leaving w/i means, getting smaller home for fewer people,  and investing money into the general fund to help the ones with the most dependents at home.  And now, she is thoroughly FUCKED.

Is it possible Meri saw the writing on the wall and was protecting her financial security? Did she know if she wasn't sitting on real estate or otherwise hoarding assets/resources, she could wind up with jack shit?

Meri, I take it back. Wet bar and 5 bedrooms for 2 people was just her insurance policy.  If I gotta leave, I can sell this place and actually walk away with something perhaps.   as for her big rental in Flagstaff, is she maybe air bnb-ing it LOL? Pay the rent out of "general fund" and then pocket the air bnb proceeds? Just spitballing!

Houses are assets, and Meri understood that she should have the same share in assets as the other wives, no matter the number of kids each wife had. Look at Janelle, she gave so much in money to the family via inheritanceand 401K funds, where I've heard that Robyn stated she was leaving her assets to her kids.  No assets for you, Janelle!

Where Meri gets my goat is going OVER the preset house budget in Vegas, private college for Leon,  I BELIEVE a car for Leon, and the Flagstaff McMansion, aka the rennal.  Although she most likely paid for that out of her Lulano grift.

I will always remember Meri blubbering about NEEDING! THAT! WETBAR! which for architectural reasons that escape me meant that a 5th (?) bedroom would also need to go into her house, and her mumbling that it would be her hobby room or some such nonsense.  I recall also her wanting to be last when it came to going to the real estate office and choosing her flooring, cabinets, etc.  I wonder if that's because she figured Kody would be so worn down by then, he'd agree to her selecting the cabinets made of pure gold and the marble flooring hand-delivered piece by piece from an abandoned castle in France or whatever the hell she chose.  I just recall her being extremely whiny and pouty about the entire process until she got exactly what she wanted.  That might have been savvy future planning on her part, or - more likely - she knew she'd get her way if she pushed Kody hard enough.  In any event, it was gross behavior on her part from start to finish.

THE STORY OF A MONTH

Meri: I have a secret.  I tracked Kody's time with me for 20 years and found out he was with me way less than he should've been.

Robyn: I have a secret too!  I tracked Kody's whereabouts using my phone tracker app that I made him install for a MONTH!  And he was with me WAY LESS than everyone! *giggle* It's so harrrrrrrrrrrd, isn't it?  Like, OMG!!

Christine: Yeah, there was a period of time where Kody spent a whole month with me.  When he wasn't playing on his phone or napping in the closet, he was telling me that if I agreed to move to Flagstaff, he'd finally learn the names of all of our kids.

Kody: I spent a month with Christine to get her to finally STFU about how I was never there.  A whole month.  That's, like, a lot of days in a row.  Then I peaced out and she went right back to her female emotional whining so I never went back.  I can't win with these women.

Janelle: A month?  I would've lost my damn mind.

I expected "he was telling me that if I agreed to move to Flagstaff, he'd finally learn the names of all of our kids" to be the peak of my laughter at the above, and then you brought it right home with Janelle's "A month?  I would've lost my damn mind."

Oh my word, laurakaye. That was hilarious (and I can hear Janelle saying, "I would've lost my damn mind").

I believe Meri's father had five wives at one point. Bonnie (her mom) was his first wife, whom he married when they were still mainstream LDS. I also think Bonnie *might* have been the only wife who didn't eventually leave him. Even if they didn't all leave him, some of them did. I would imagine Meri took note of their fates over the years.

Quoting three people here to reply with the same point.

It doesn't bother me though because Janelle lives within her means. I would prefer if she cleared out some of the clutter, sure, but she only needs two bedrooms and that's what she has. Good on her. Take a note, Meri.

I also think at the point in time she realized she couldn’t do the RV and needed an apartment, she was also still saving to build her little garage & upstairs house (casita she maybe called it?). I don’t think she’s living paycheck to paycheck sweating over buying groceries and stuff but she doesn’t have “I can go buy a house money.”  I hope we see her finances play out during their “divorce”. I really hope she doesn’t just call it a day to get away from him and leave some of her rightfully owed money w/K&R.

I think it was a major dill breaker for the first three wives to see Kody keep all of his promises to Robyn and shower her and her/their children with attention and resources, especially resources that weren't allocated fairly. The other three were boxed out and punished for not jumping on the bandwagon. And Robyn sits there and plays dumb. I absolutely think it was because of her. But I also think if it wasn't Robyn, it would be somebody else with a similar outcome.

What I can't figure out is why 5 grown adults couldn't figure out how to split time 4 ways. If Kody had an "office" at Robyn's house, he could still have a laptop and work from the other homes. In Las Vegas, all 4 houses were huge, with plenty of room for a real home office or a desk in the master bedroom. It sounded like Kody was at Robyn's all day 5 days a week but didn't count that as "time" because he was working. But where was he eating lunch? With Robyn and her small children?

But even if you split the time evenly, the kids would still only get to see their father every 4th day. The real truth is that polygamy doesn't work unless you are like Janelle and don't really want your partner around much anyway.

He NEVER should have known about Janelle talking over her concerns with Robyn about the house purchase.  And it explains why Robyn was always talking about wanting to rent and praying for a rennal.  She isn't as smart as she thinks she is.

I think "office" translated into "mancave."  I think Robyn set him up with his own little hidey-hole where he could squirrel away from all those other pesky wives and their time-sucking kids.  She probably made sure he had plenty of fresh celery, LIV water, a mirror, and in return, when he awoke from his nappy, he would stay for some of Robyn's home cookin'.

While it's true that private conversations between the wives, or a wife and Kody, should not have been shared, I do think that Janelle should have talked to Kody directly about the fact that purchasing a million dollar home for Robyn would tip the financial scales in Robyn's favor, when the goal was (ostensibly) to have all assets divided in 4 equal parts. I think Janelle talked to Robyn about it because she felt Robyn would more easily influence Kody than she would.

But Robyn prayed and prayed to God to give her the rennal which had 7 bedrooms and he failed, then she threatened to move an hour and a half away just so they didn't have to buy. Same B.S she pulled with whining to Kody about keeping her cookie closed for business with any more kids because she was so overwhelmed with 4 kids, a nanny and a failing joolry business.
