S01.E09: Whose Show is This?

I really enjoyed the finale. It was a lot of fun even if it was meta upon meta. She Hulk breaking that Disney+ platform grid to go look for "Kevin" may have been a little self indulgent, but it serves to show they can poke fun at themselves. I think Feige should have appeared. It's kinda lame he didn't after all that. The 70s TV  Show intro was sheer perfection. I can watch that over and over on its own. Did I see Lou Ferringo as The Incredible Hulk for about half a second?

So happy Daredevil/ Matt was back. I was hoping there would be an end credit scene with Jen saying you will be seeing her in Daredevil's show as she turns off the light with them in bed.

Happy to see Bruce again. Skaar being dragged along as well is not a surprise.

Here's hoping for season two and the movies.

This episode proves that Jen is the most powerful being in the MCU. Not only did she get into “The Control Room” of the MCU, she re-did her storyline — no Infinity Stones required!

Fun way to end the season, but where was Madisynn?!

In principle I like a good 4th wall break to close out the season, but this was just horribly done. So you just drop the season spanning blood-plot and call it a day? Then they didn't even do the changed climax Jen negotiated with K.E.V.I.N., they just cut to after. How lazy can you be?

Also Jen calling this show a "legal comedy". Well that is rich. How often have we seen a court room from the inside this season? Maybe in two episodes? I wish this show was a legal comedy. I'm a massive fan of Boston Legal. But this was nothing of the kind. The writers even admitted that they have no idea how to write "the legal stuff".

I think if I didn't stan Tatiana Maslany so hard, I might be out at this point. But I do, so I will at least check out season two. Here is hoping that they hire some actually talented writers who can write "the legal stuff" and actually make this show into a legal comedy. Because whatever they are doing now is not working.

I knew it was going to be good when it began with a throwback to the old school Marvel tv shows.

Everything Jen went through was so upsetting to watch. She was the victim of a sex crime and she lost her job and her apartment and her privacy. I love that her family was so supportive, especially her dad spraying the reporters with a hose, because fuck the water restrictions. Love Nikki and Pug helping Jen take down Intelligencia from the inside. Poor Pug looked so uncomfortable. Actual lol at Nikki telling him to call women "females" to really sell it, because yeah...immediate red flag. Glad Todd is being held accountable, but what about that bastard Josh?

All of the fourth wall breaks have been great, but this was the most epic of them all. Jen literally smashed through the D+ site and fixed her own story. Kevin Feige actually being a robot named K.E.V.I.N had me rolling. He has a good sense of humor.

"Same daddy, same issues. Two daddies, two issues." No lies detected. "I smash fourth walls and bad endings. And sometimes Matt Murdock." Iconic. Matt just dropping in from the sky was hilarious. And he's met her whole family now. I already shipped Jen/Matt after the previous episode, but I adore them even more now.

He's probably a horrible actor. At least they gave the robot a small baseball cap rim. That was a nice touch.

It was... and Bodybuilder-She-Hulk looked way better than the CGI Abomination we had all season. Which is a bit embarrassing.

I would emphatically disagree, but to each their own.

It's not like the bodybuilder version looked great, just way better than the horrible, horrible CGI we got. That Disney released the CGI in this state really shows how little faith they had in the show. It looks like they conjured a demon from the uncanny valley.

Jen ripping on KEVIN and the MCU should’ve been longer. She didn’t even get to how the other female characters have been treated.

Skaar!

Love me more Matt!

Seriously. What was the point of the support group threatening to kick his ass if we don’t even get the pleasure of watching it happen?! What a rip!

Other than that, this was fun. You can’t resist a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Did Jen Walters violate her Plea Deal by turning into the She-Hulk (by the end of this, who the heck knows what happened and what didn't happen), should Jen Walters be in a cell next to Emil Blonsky? I am not sure how much legal recourse Jen Walters has against people who said on the internet that they didn't like the She-Hulk, because I didn't like the She-Hulk.

Maybe the universe of the rewrite of the ending didn’t have Jen signing onto the No-Hulking provision? 🤷🏻‍♀️

There's more than one way to do legal comedy than the inside of a courtroom. But I'd say most of the season there was an inside the courtroom scene. Mostly off the top of my head,

1. Jen as an ADA is beating her opponent, punches out Titania.

2. Pug takes on Smug Boy's civil suit against Runa

3. Jen takes on Donnie Blaze

4. Jen's colleague wins the right to the name She-Hulk back from Titania

5. Jen sues Luke J. on behalf of Leapfrog

6. While it's technically not a "courtroom," Jen wins Emil's parole board hearing

Now one can think that all of these were not written well or whatever, but there's no reasonable dispute that these plot lines existed across various episodes. Throw in things like the negotiation as to Mr. Immortal's divorce, Jen being called in to doublecheck on Blonsky's parole as his attorney (in part) and Jen being honored as a woman lawyer, and that pretty much covers the season.

Yes, turning into She-Hulk even for a fourth-wall break would have been a violation of her plea deal. But it looks like she worked it out with K.E.V.I.N. that there was a new happy ever after ending in which everything worked out just the way she wanted it. We were told that the conviction was overturned. So overturned conviction presumably means that no one is going to be looking too closely at what she may have done under the terms of a plea deal that is no longer valid.

Assuming the legal system in the MCU is somewhat akin to our own, Jen doesn't have legal recourse against people like you or me who simply say "I don't like She-Hulk." She would, however, potentially have legal recourse against people who post death threats against her, who dox her, who post revenge porn of her, etc. etc.

And for the rest where she doesn't have legal recourse, there's always Nikki. (And Matt. And Wongers. And maybe Madisynn, two n's one y, but it's not where you think!)

The new-ish TV world with the season all done before the first episode is released. When a Fonz or Urkel emerges and pops it is too late to punch them back into the story until the next season, and then there is the danger of Madisynn in this case overwhelming Jen and taking over the show.

For me this was the first episode where the comedy worked thru out the half hour. The last two episodes do give me a reason to hope for a second season. As K.E.V.I.N. seems to be uncommitted about Jen showing up elsewhere

Loved it!

I appreciated the subversion of the big MCU third-act showdown, and jumping through the Disney+ homepage to confront K.E.V.I.N. was a fun way to do it. "I smash fourth walls and bad endings. And sometimes Matt Murdock," lol! And Jen's thumbs-up to the camera after asking about the X-Men was hilarious.

Beyond that, I really liked Jen fighting for the more thematic ending about her two identities. And I loved her pointing out that she didn't need to fight a Todd Hulk because Todd was already a villain without all that.

It was nice to see Nikki and Pug working so hard to help Jen out--you could tell Pug hated every second of being there. And even more so than Emil just turning into the Abomination for speaking engagements, I'm glad it was evident that he didn't know much about what the Intelligentsia guys were actually about. The little bit we got of his speech, with the "Todd told me you guys...", was all super generic motivational-speaker stuff.

I'm not a big shipper, but I love Jen/Matt so much, easily one of my favorite MCU couples. I laughed when Matt dropped out of the sky to "help out," and the family dinner scene at the end was too cute.

They better not ignore Jen and Matt's relationship going forward. I get that Daredevil's show will have a completely different style and tone, but she needs to pop up for a cameo, especially if he needs a lawyer or something like that. They are so enjoyable together.

This was a more fitting resolution to the first season of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law! I was about to be upset until Jen popped the Disney+ menu screen.

I'm glad the blood theft was dropped because they never really showed us how Josh got Jen's blood. Speaking of which, I hope to see Josh come to some severe legal trouble for what he did to Jen.

Todd being the HulkKing wasn't surprising.  Emil hosting private events on his retreat was cute. The end credits showed how he got past his inhibitor and I cackled.  The only blip was Bruce showing up at the retreat. How would he have known where Jen was if she didn't even tell her parents where she went? It was far better for him to show up at the family brunch with a kid.

Satisfying season finale. Bring on Season 2 and the Hulk movies!

One quibble: seeing Benedict Wong's name in the end credits spoiled the stinger scene! I was like, "Wong? He wasn't in the episode. Ohhh."

I don't think that was a blip. It was part of the planned absurdity of the showdown at the retreat that Jen protested against and got re-written. The unlikeliness of Hulk finding out where she was and showing up in the nick of time was the point, it was the show subverting and making fun of the typical Marvel tropes - a feature, not a bug. Once Jen returned to the scene (for the aftermath) Hulk was nowhere to be seen, because the incident had been changed so that he never showed up there.

Holy shit, I was not expecting all of that!

So, good old Todd was Hulk King and the head of Intellegencia this entire time, but that wasn't She-Hulk's true threat!  Nope, in the end, Jennifer takes on the MCU's arguably strongest obstacle yet: the Marvel Formula!  Yep, once Jen sees that her finale is going to turn into a rush affair filled with returning characters for no reason, generic stories about using her blood to gain powers, flimsy ways to tie everything together, and an atypical fight scene, she literally breaks out of her own show and invades the real world to confront the almighty Kevin!  Who.... is actually not that affable cap wearing guy we've been seeing at every press release and behind the scenes video clip for almost the past twenty years, but an actual A.I. named "K.E.V.I.N."  That all totally checks out!  And she was able to convince it to let her tell her story instead!  Best 4th walking breaking moment ever!!

Loved the old-school opening montage/clip as well.

As satisfying as it would have been to watch She-Hulk smash all of those fools, I did like that Jen was able to defeat them all legally and Todd is likely going down for good.  Do wish we actually saw what happened to Josh though.  Bastard deserved the worst for sure!

Glad Emil wasn't actually part of Intellegencia, but was simply turning into Abomination for motivational speeches (I'm guessing he didn't know it was Intellegencia he was dealing with?), but it looks like he's back in prison for breaking parole.  Or suppose to be at least.  Because Wong already broke him out.  I so hope Madisynn is still there: I can only imagine her playing off with Emil!

Loved Nikki and Pug working together to help Jen: including poor Pug having to pretend to be sexist troll.  After his time on Arrow, I never knew I would find Josh Segarra to be so lovable in a role again!

Jen's parents are still the best.  She might be right about the odd dad issues the MCU characters have, but at least her dad is top tier.

Matt Murdock just dropping out of thin air (because Jen just wanted him to be there) was hilarious.  And he's already met the family!  They so need to keep Jen/Matt going in the MCU: Tatiana Maslany and Charlie Cox are perfection together.

Bruce is back!  And Hulk has a son?!!

As usual, I'll probably need a bit to assess the entire season and figure out I feel about it in the grand scope of things, but this might be my favorite finale out of the entire MCU, and this show as a whole was one of the funniest things out of the MCU for me.  Whatever issues it might have, I loved the humor, the characters, the references (all those references!), and how the writers clearly knew that a portion of the fanbase would respond to the mere concept of this show/character in an ugly way, and totally just went all in with it and made them the villains here.  Plus, again, Tatiana Maslany.  This better not be the last time we see Jen or She-Hulk in the MCU!  Make she continue to break 4th walls and piss off trolls with her twerking for years to come!

I should have known that this was going to be one wild ride when we opened up with a 70s Incredible Hulk style intro for the show, and the rest of the episode did not disappoint! I absolutely adored the fourth wall smash where Jen stopped the typical MCU ending, full of characters randomly showing up, a big showy fight scene, a super villain with powers like the hero, the super blood, so that Jen can have the ending that she wants for her legal comedy. It was hilarious, but also thematically appropriate. Jen started this show not wanting to be a Hulk and wanting to just go on with her life, but when she saw that it was impossible, she struggled to try and find a way to be Jen and be She-Hulk, so it makes sense that it would end with her solving the problem the Jen way, not the She-Hulk way, while also holding onto that part of herself as well. The show was always more about Jen than about villains or evil plots, so this is the best way it could have ended.

That whole fourth wall break was some epic stuff, its been awhile since I laughed that hard at anything, they just kept going further and further into the joke, having Jen running down the Disney Plus screen, breaking into the Disney lot and confronting the writers, and all culminating in meeting Kevin...or should I say K.E.V.I.N, the AI that runs the entire MCU with its algorithm to create almost perfect blockbuster entertainment. That was an epic amount of smack that Marvel just laid on itself, I can appreciate that they and Kevin Feige can laugh at themselves and admit to some of their own clichés, Jen really got to lay into K.E.V.I.N over how her story was turning out, turns out Thanos didn't even need the Reality Stone, the greatest power in the MCU to warp reality is Jen's ability to Hulk smash the fourth wall and give herself a happy ending.

Loved Jen commenting on the very high amount of people with daddy issues in the MCU, but at least Jen's dad is awesome. I cheered when he sprayed those reporters with his hose, water regulations be damned.

Todd being the Hulk King is probably the MCU's least surprising twist villain ever, to the point where I'm not even sure its supposed to be a twist. What a pack of creeps, Jen was right that Todd and his legion of losers dont need powers to be the villains, they did plenty of damage to poor Jen on their own. I hope they get every book thrown at them, now all we need to do is find that scumbag Josh and set the support group on him. I felt so bad for Jen, she had these horrible people do these horrible things to her and she was the one who got fired, lost her privacy, sent to jail, and was under attack by the media. At least she had her family and her friends, it was so sweet how Nicki and Pug did so much to help her, Pug is such a sweet heart that he couldn't even pretend to be one of those assholes without getting fed lines.

Matt and Jen are the best together, I started shipping them last week but now I am totally on board this ship. They were so cute with her family, they better have Jen at least get a cameo or two in his next show, whenever that happens. I know that it will have an extremely different tone than this show, but I know they can make it work.

Skaar! Its happening!

So Jen doesn't just break the 4th wall she breaks the Marvel Universe. Lol. K.e.v.i.n being an AI that makes nearly perfect movies/shows. I loved her just wanting Matt to appear out of thin air. I don't blame her.

I'm glad they dropped the stealing blood thing because it was obvious Todd was behind it all. And she's right we didn't need a big CGI fight we've seen enough of those. The real villain of shows like this and Ms. Marvel are internet trolls.

I'm sure a lot of people are going to hate this. But I loved it. It was a legal comedy all the way through, not perfect but better then others.

I did miss Madisynn with 2 n's and a y that's not where you think. I would've loved her to tell Wongers that the Sopranos is starting when he was picking up Emil. At NYCC someone was cosplaying as her. And she kept in character when she asked questions at panels. Lol

I really hope we see 1 ep in the Daredevil show where we see Jen at Matt's place. It can just be an end tag. We didn't get much of them but I'm shipping them.

The 70s intro was fantastic. It's sad that so many fanboys are too insecure and fragile to enjoy this show, because it was made by, and for, people who love comic books and nerdy television.

I did find the reaction to Jen's actions rather extreme, especially in a world that's getting more and more used to superhero histrionics. Tagged, fired, ostracised and demonised in the press? I didn't really buy it. I get that this is the emotional climax of the show, but it was too big a swing.

Of course Todd is the ringleader of the incel misogynists. I mean, we all knew it but I'm glad the show didn't try to pull a fast one. I feel like the writers of the show just perused Reddit before writing the Intelligensia meetup scenes. Same with Blonsky, who turns out to be a good guy after all.

The bait and switch with the show avoiding the usual MCU climactic battle because it's a tired, played out trope, was fantastic (I've been saying this for a long while now). Good on Jen for calling out the writing. This was fantastically done, with her popping through the Disney+ interface and wandering the studio lot to find the writers and Kevin. This is what fourth wall breaks can be, if you just commit to the idea, and it's just what they did in the comics on occasion.

I had a huge smile on my face for the whole bit. I never thought Marvel would be ballsy enough to break their universe like this. I just wish it had actually been Kevin Feige or, even better, some really handsome A-lister playing him.

Also, telling her to transform back into Jen because "you are very expensive" was funny.

"A woman has needs."

"Historically, we've been light in that department." Fucking fantastic.

I want a second season. Hell, I want Jen taking her antics into other shows and movies, and completely upending the MCU formula.

They had me full on at the very beginning. I was 5 when The Incredible Hulk was on TV and that was regular viewing in our house so that throwback, that spot. on. throwback, was just absolutely divine. I was cracking up the whole time.

THEN we got the spiral of Jen's life even though she was still working on figuring out Intelligencia even after moving back with her parents (I loved her Dad telling the reporters to get off his lawn) and then the showdown at Emil's sanctuary which then gives us the ultimate 4th wall break...

I loved it. It was so true to She-Hulk. But it also just took me to 4th wall breaks like the end of Blazing Saddles. Or even a movie Disney did back in the 30s that involved a guy going to suggest they do a cartoon on 'The Reluctant Dragon' and wound up doing an entire tour of Disney Studios (which hasn't changed much since then architecturally-speaking) and then got a sneak peak on the new short Disney had just finished that was 'The Reluctant Dragon.' That Jen fought for the show to end on her terms and not in a knock down drag out fight that really wasn't necessary -- though I did like how messy it was getting -- and that she just wanted to see Matt again so there he was.

Nikki and Pug were delightful.

"Come on Pug, be gross."

"Oh God, he can't improv!!"

"Does that bitch ever use a door?"

"What's going on? Did they hook up? Are they a thing?"

And yes, I'm totally into Jen/Matt. Even knowing that Matt's life is a constant dumpster fire... I don't care. They hit all the notes for me. LOVE THEM.

This was great.

Between this and Falcon and Winter Soldier, I'm thinking all MCU shows should have a finale that ends with a family cookout.

Generally, I enjoyed the episode and thought it was one of the stronger episodes of the season. I was glad that in neither version did Abomination turn on Jen. I always expect Pug to be a jerk because of Arrow, but he's nice and I like that.  I'm amused at bringing Matt back for nothing in this one. I was kind of expecting her to use him as co-counsel. Liked Jen's room having Legally Blonde and Erin Brockovich posters. I like that Jen has a large network of friendly coworkers and family. It's nice to see a superhero with a support system and no tragic backstory.

Wow, they really made a great choice to go super duper ultra meta for the finale. The 1970s Hulk show vibe of the cold open was incredible, but it was like nothing compared to Jen busting out of the menu and into the Marvel offices.

I cannot possibly express how much I want a K.E.V.I.N. toy.

Wait, does this mean Jen is done with GLKH? I guess I wouldn't mind seeing her start her own firm next season, a la the 2014 comic. But there was something gleefully silly about the GLKH setting.

As Hard Drive pointed out on twitter today, they (almost) accidentally had the scoop a few months ago about an AI that runs Marvel.

That hallway fight must have been very expensive. Even in the movies, with a higher per-minute VFX budget, Bruce as Hulk usually fights aliens or robots -- y'know, other CGI entities. Having Jen fight actual humans feels like a nightmare of compositing and stunt alignment.
