I'm sorry that Patty didn't win today, but she certain amassed a lot of money in just 2 days.  I wanted her to hang around for a couple of more days.

Me, too. She was a delight.

But if Patty had to go, at least she was beaten by somebody with an accent suitable to Pemberley ; )

Yup! It simply has to be a question. I've even heard that someone once gave "Who?" as an accepted response (as in the English rock band), although that could be an urban legend.

I don't know whether or not it happened, but my husband insists you should be able to just ask it with the rise at the end, the way one typically does as a question - something like "Milton?"

Anyone know if someone's ever said "Is it....?"

I don't normally feel too surprised over TSs, but Kandahar did surprise me. I'm not very good at geography, but it's been in the news for 20 years or so.

Didn't do great, and I really should have gotten FJ. Studied the book in college, saw the movie. Oh well.

I believe someone did, and fairly recently (within the last year or so)! I remember it being a woman who was possibly in the middle, but can't recall what the clue/answer might've been.

EDIT: I did some research on this forum and it was actually in September of 2021. The contestant answered "Is it Alanis Morissette?"

Yeah, that one was only worth $200 for a reason, so I wonder if they got caught up in the historical part of the clue, trying to figure out who Britain was trying to conquer at the time of the battle, rather than the simple formula of Kandahar = what country?  Because it's hard to believe three J! contestants had already forgotten the scenes at Kandahar's airport, if nothing else in recent history.

I seem to recall that, sometime late in Alex's time, there was a category where all the correct responses were questions.  Alex seemed a little disappointed that everyone added "What is..." to their responses anyway.

They should periodically have a category all about Alex.

They had one on 11/8/22, the second anniversary of his death. Maybe they could do that on 11/8 (or the Friday before if the date is on a weekend) every year.

February 6:

63% / 52% / 58%

J!: Ran Wine and Doctor WHO, missed two Museums and Parts & Labor, three February, and four in Add A Letter (partly because I got home just barely in time for the game to start and I didn't quite understand the category)

DJ: Ran Train Routes (the four that were revealed, at least), missed four in S-SS-ing the Situation and Homer and two in the rest.

FJ: Thought about it for several seconds and got it right. Not a great game overall but at least I'm starting the FJ contest out well for the week.

My only TS were Episcopal Church and Neglected Tropical Diseases (just watched a video about those the other day).

I feel so stupid.  I was trying to think of something trenchlike that you could hide in so I said a trough.

I got the missed clues of tropical diseases, Mckinley, Alaska, Boston, business and American Revolution.

I got the entire categories of Dr Who, War and the partial category of train routes right.

Instaget FJ for me tonight.  Was Tonya just playing for second place?  Odd wager.

I also got the TS of Episcopal, tropical, Alaska, business, and scissor.

Jesse's vocal fry was killing me.  He didn't do it all the time, though.

Jesse looks like an actor (perhaps someone on an entertainment show) named Jesse. I couldn’t think of his name and it was distracting me. All I came up with is Nautilus, tropical diseases, Boston, and business. I should have muted the FJ music so I could think.

I spoil myself every day on FJ reading the clue online before the show airs in my market. I have no idea if the think music would distract me. I read the clue and give myself 30 seconds.

Got today's, so my goal of 1 FJ every week has been achieved. 😊

The business TS surprised me; I think they got distracted by extraneous information in the clue rather than just concentrating on what the B in TCB stands for.  I was also a little surprised no one guessed tropical (maybe no one wanted to risk $1000 on a guess when the scores were all so close at that point in the game).  Same with Alaska once CA was ruled out (I failed to guess that one, too, and it was a real "duh" when Ken said it).

My initial reaction was Tonya should have bet more on the DD in the vocabulary category in DJ, as the difficulty of those generally comes from the time crunch; with extra time since she's the only one with a shot at it, go for it.  But, then again, there were three TS in that category, so maybe not.  I got nothin' on the logic behind her FJ wager, though.

I ran wine (of course, and now I'll be having a Stag's Leap cabernet with dinner thanks to the notes clue giving me a craving), doctors, and the vocabulary category (that one was fun!) and got all but one in museums, and only missed two each in Feb and parts, so I was off to a decent start.

I didn't run anything in DJ, but I got all but one in trains, POWs, songs, and the vocabulary category.  I missed three in the Iliad/Odyssey category, which was better than I anticipated doing.  I missed another three in Homers (but, unlike all three contestants, I knew Roxbury = Boston, so that took a little of the sting out of my meh performance in that one).

I had no idea for FJ at first, but then focusing on "Old West" made the light bulb go on, and I figured it was barbed wire ("the devil's rope", as Native Americans called it, since it was just the latest thing used to steal their land).

My only guess is she was not confident in the category and bet that Matthew would get it wrong. If she had bet enough to pass his total and gotten it wrong, 3rd place could have overtaken her.

Of course she also wagered $1000 earlier when Ken just told her she was  $1400 behind so I am probably giving her more credit than she deserves.

So would that make it a "next-insta-get"

I don't check triple stumpers while playing, but on a whim today I thought I'd check and list them all (bolding the ones I got). There were a lot:

Episcopal Church, Tropical Disease, Second Republic, USS Nautilus, Business, McKinley, American Revolution, Alaska, Scissor, Boston, and distressed.

I did much better in Wine than I had any right to, almost ran it (now I know what "legs" means).  I also almost ran Doctor WHO (missing smallpox - measles was on my mind).

I went pretty blank on parts and labor - just didn't wrap my mind around it, but did manage to get teacher and priest, though I should have gotten them all.

So no FJ to start off the week. ☹️ But there's still time.

Yeah, the last time was three weeks ago, when they left two clues on the board in DJ.

I didn't get final.  I had ponderance stuck in the my head and it wouldn't get out.  Mantra is not a word I regularly use, though, so I don't think I can blame ponderance's trespass.

I got the missed clue of Spain.  Was that the onlymissed clue?

I got the entire categories of prairie and nuts right.  Besides War for the reest of that category I only missed one clue each.  I only got one war clue because I was mostly being a bone head.  7 days war, 7 6 what's the difference, and I knew the answer but couldn't think of peloponesian.

90%!! / 67% / 77%

Damn! I ran four categories in the first round! Nuts, Whoa O, We're Halfway There, and Livin' on a Prairie. Missed one War and two in Also an NFL Team. Not so great in DJ (but better than yesterday, so I'll take it); ran Words with Diphthongs, missed one Title Character and Role: Model, two in Holidays and Science & Tech, and four Countries. Didn't get FJ. There were no TS in the first round; I didn't get any in the second round but I did get the missed DD of sauna (got all three DDs, in fact).

There were two in the second round (Spain and Less [is Lost]), plus the missed DD of sauna.

The show will be pre-empted by the State of the Union tonight, so I just checked the archive.  I know I'd have recognized Ashton Kutcher had I been able to see the picture, so I gave myself credit for that one, but with the other photo clues I either didn't need it (the orphan clue) or it wouldn't have helped me (the rest).

I ran nuts, NFL, and the vocabulary category, but missed two each in the rest of the first round.

It got much worse in DJ.  I was terrible in literary; I only got Dorian Gray, and that was a guess.  I was pretty bad in 20th c. and holidays, too, missing three each.  I missed two each in science and models (it should have been one; I could picture Milla Jovovich as if she was sitting here, but couldn't come up with her name).  I got all but one in dipthongs, but didn't run a damn thing.

To cap it off, I did not come up with anything for FJ.  This was not my game.

With the Ratajkowski answer, I guess we've set the precedent that they will accept the person's Instagram handle.

Haven't they accepted e.g. J Lo in the past? I think commonly used nicknames tend to be accepted and it appears her podcast title refers to her as EmRata.

I actually played via the archive this afternoon, too, just because I didn't have a lot to do at work and I was bored (I'm off the rest of the week so I wasn't going to start anything new). Also my mom asked if I wanted to come for dinner so I figured I'd watch there and wouldn't be able to keep score. I did the same with the model clues; I knew I'd recognize Ashton Kutcher but I figured I certainly would not be able to put a name to a picture of Emily Rata-whatshername (and I didn't know she was in that movie, though I have seen her on the late night shows a few times); the name Robert Moog seemed vaguely familiar once I heard it but neither the picture nor the clue helped me in any way. I didn't even notice that there was a picture link in the orphan or Denmark clues (I got the latter from the cookies).

So did I correctly hear Ken say “ it’s your favorite writer” before the champ gave his answer ( and then got it wrong)?  Wasn’t that a hint?  I couldn’t believe it!!

yes, Wilde was the last word of the clue, but it was strange and I think it possibly could have thrown the contestant for a second

No joy in FJ-ville for me tonight.  It's one of those that I could have sat here all night and not thought of it.

Also no TS for me, although I did get the missed DD of sauna.

I vote for “Why not…?” It would make every answer sound whimsical.

Same here, except I shortened it to ponder. I was really trying to make that work, because it wouldn’t leave my brain.

So that makes it 0/5 so far this week, after last week’s big zero. This may be a personal record for most losses in a row. Woo hoo! Can I repeat tomorrow? Wait and see!

I realize that Wilde was in the clue but a lot of times the contestant misreads the clue - today , for example, they were looking for the country ( Turkey I believe) and the person gave something else.)   So I feel Ken should refrain from saying anything until the answer is given. Plus, did it cut into the allotted time to answer?

Ken meant well (or maybe was just lightly teasing a champ he has come to know), but still, adding extra conversation between revealing the clue and the start of the timer would be a distraction.
I always wonder about such instances——whether they might have done something in post production if it would have possibly changed the outcome of the game.

Same.

But at least Moog [synthesizer] was still an instaget from live, amplified music common knowledge of the 70s.

Maybe there will be a FJ or even 2 in my wheelhouse yet this week.🤞

I know I'm petty but I am sort of glad that guy who dissed Price is Right in his contestant conversation lost. I love both Jeopardy and Price is Right. Each show gives me different things. So when Ken said "Come on Down to Zero Dollars", I cheered!

Also, I read online yesterday that Mayim comes back on February 20th.  Not sure how right that is. We get reruns of Jeopardy every day and right now they are in this year's TOC. I may just rewatch that for awhile.

Ken shouldn't be saying anything other than reading the clue. I've felt that he gets too chummy with the multiple game champs (he probably feels some kinship with them).

I think too much is being made of Ken’s Wilde comment. Of course he shouldn’t be helping anyone, but Wilde was right there in the clue, right at the very end, one of the last things the contestants saw/ heard. It was not extra information, and so I think it’s a big stretch to call it a hint.

I also think Ken’s easy rapport with the contestants is one of his big strengths as a host. I like that he listens to, and recalls, details about their lives. It makes the game more personal. Yes, he could stand there and just read clues like a robot, but in that case why not just hire the robot. Let Watson host.

As Alex used to say, no harm no foul. No help was given, no advantages were gained, no one appeared to be flustered or bothered. IMO, it’s a non-issue.

The way it came across was that no one buzzed in and before time was up Ken poked Matthew with his comment, so Matthew recklessly rang in with his wrong guess. Then Carolyn rang in with the right response. In the scheme of things Matthew losing $400 and Carolyn gaining $400 didn't make a difference in the outcome. However Ken wouldn't have to be a robot to wait until time was up to express his dismay that Matthew of Magdalen College had missed something that seemed to be right in his sweet spot.

ETA: @proserpina65has pointed out that Matthew had already buzzed in when Ken made the comment, so I was mistaken.

Did Alex ever drop hints? I don't remember him doing so. I think Ken is doing a great job as host & I enjoy his wittiness. But I don't like his OTT glowing remarks re: the champs & how much they've won before the games start.  It's almost like he suddenly remembers the two new players, saying something like oh hey, maybe you too can have a chance at winning. But...he's still a fun host!

I would agree if social media did not bleed into the news and overall popular awareness. There were several news stories this week (from actual news outlets, not just clickbait trash) about how much Jeopardy fans hated Jake. It would be nearly impossible for Jake/ his friends/ his family to avoid this backlash unless they dug a hole and buried themselves for several days. Nobody needs to seek out social media. I’m not on social media, and yet I always know the big topics. It’s just there.

It's still possible to NOT to read/watch/listen to those stories.  No one should be cruel when expressing their opinions about various Jeopardy contestants, but neither should they feel they can't express those opinions, good or bad.

I got it by trying to think of a word I connect with India in some way.  Mantra is what came to mind.  Pure luck, I think that was.

Besides getting FJ correct, I did pretty well last night.  I got the stumpers of Spain and saunas, ran 6 categories (Which War?, Nuts To You!, Whoa "O"!, The 20th Century By Country, Holidays Around The Globe and Words With Dipthongs) and got all but one clue in 3 more (Also An NFL Team, We're Halfway There and Livin' On A Prairie).

I have a confession to make: I couldn't actually remember what a dipthong is.  Thank goodness the clues made sense without knowing.

I like Matthew and enjoy his accent, but honestly would be fine with him losing soon.  Unless, of course, the next champ is someone with annoying quirks. 😉

According to the archive, Ken made his comment right after Matthew rang in, not before.  I've already deleted the show from my dvr, so I can't check that.
