I got FJ.

I got the missed clue of Tambourine Man.

I got the entire category of TV catchprhases right and the entire category of lawyers wrong.

I had a horrid DJ round. I missed 18 out of 30 questions. Hangs head in shame.  Not my categories, I guess.

Very happy Kendra won. Did Jeff say, "Bess Trump"? Must've been accidentally as he was looking at old Bess's photo. I would've liked it if he won as well. All three are too young to remember, 🎶 "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man"🎶. I think the Byrd's? did a better version than Dylan. Good game!

(I'm too young, too. It was released 10 years before I was born, according to wikipedia.)

"Mr. Tambourine Man" as a TS blew me away.  Yes, even given their ages.  Because it's not just about the popularity of the original recording; it appeared on several of his own albums over the years, was covered by numerous other artists, and has been used in TV and film throughout the years to this day.  I would have bet and lost big money the lyrics would register with one of them.  But, in that same category, I enjoyed Ken's Dylan impression on the "feeel" in the "Like a Rolling Stone" lyric.

"Bessie Trump" made me laugh so hard I startled my cat.

I ran First Ladies, words, and party, got all but one in Budapest, logos, and TV catchphrases (thank goodness for cultural osmosis), so I had a great first round.

In DJ, I was all over the map; I ran lawyers (those billboards gave me a laugh, too) and airports, got all but one in Dylan, missed two in measurements, three in botany, and nearly completely blew titles, only getting one.  Sadly, that one was the Nicholas Sparks dreck, but I watched the film version when I came across it on TV for James Garner and Gena Rowlands (and their part was good -- the youngsters, though, ugh) so that was apparently enough to put Nicholas Sparks + N Title = The Notebook away in my memory bank.  I should have got two in that category, as Naked Lunch was the other title I knew, but I couldn't spit it out in time.

FJ had me puzzled briefly, and the interesting part is I wasn't consciously cogitating during those several seconds, just sort of staring, but then the logic process going on in the background (something that contains water + WWI-era military invention + single syllable) turned the light bulb on and it came to me in a flash -- a delayed instaget?

I finally landed on the “just write something” response of pond, which kinda sorta fit British and water related (and at least, for sure, one syllable).

This was my favorite kind of FJ: one I may not know (I didn’t) but can still figure out by following the clues (I did!). Just in the nick of time, though— I was briefly stuck in the lake/pond circuit, too.

I like the new champ.

One can go back and forth.  I love Roger McGuinn's guitar on the Byrds version (which really does provide the "jingle-jangle" the song talks about), and McGuinn, Crosby, and Clark's complex vocal harmonies.  But the Byrds only used one of Dylan's four verses, thus losing so many of his arresting, surrealistic lyrics:  "Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands, with all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves.  Let me forget about today until tomorrow."

Great stuff.

Trench was my answer too for FJ although I didn't think it was much of a secret invention.  DS got tank instantly.

I did get Mr. Tambourine Man and was surprised it was a ts.  Though I love Dylan's songs, I never thought he was a very good singer so I vote for the Byrds as the better version, even if they did leave out a verse.

I managed to get Cicero, which is the first time I ever got Cicero in the years I've been watching Jeopardy. Finally sunk in, I guess.

I went with trench, while having no confidence it was the right answer. I was right not to be confident.

This. A distinctive singer, but not (imo) a good one.

I ran TV Catchphases and nearly ran First Ladies, Logos, and Dylan (could not get to the title of "Like a Rolling Stone" in time. Beat my husband, the programmer, with the Python logo.

I would have been good with any of the contestants winning, I liked them all.

Last night was a so-so game for me.  FJ was an instaget, given my interest in WWI, but since "tanks" was an answer on Celebrity Jeopardy the other night, I second-guessed myself a tiny bit.  I also got 2 stumpers: Cicero and Mr. Tambourine Man.

Otherwise I only ran TV Catchphrases and Airports Named For People, and only got all but 1 clue in First Lady Firsts, Brest, Budapest & Bucharest, Logos, They're "N" Titled and Bob Dylan Lyrics.

Edited to note that the tv thing I recently watched about the battle of the Somme talked a lot about the absolute terror provoked by tank warfare.  Even if they weren't used that extensively or that successfully, really.

At least she knew the Jimi Hendrix song "Hey Joe".  It's a cover, but Hendrix's version is definitive.  Which could also be said of his version of "All Along The Watchtower".

Ugh, terrible game. Ran nothing. Missed one each in Valentine's Day, Get Hoppy, Independent Spirit Awards, and Ghost of Tom Joad, and 2-4 in everything else. Didn't get FJ but I at least figured it was a space thing...I guessed Venus but I didn't think it was right. TSes were John Paul Jones and cylinder.

I got the missed cues of Bold and the Beautiful, John Paul Jones,shilling, clay, sovereign and cylinder.

I got the entire category of college subject right.

Much better night than last night but missing FJ still put me in negative territory.

Same for me! except I didn't get B&B.

My Jeopardy calendar has had the category It Happened on Valentine's Day for yesterday, today and tomorrow. No repeat clues though.

I also said Venus for FJ!  So no FJ for me.  

But I did get the TS of John Singer Sargent, shillings, Socialists, clay, Brazos, Oklahoma, and cylinders.  I didn't miss any in the Tom Joad category -- surprising, since I hate Steinbeck and never actually read The Grapes of Wrath.

I'm probably going to jinx myself, but Monday I instagot the TSs of angiosperm and Mr. Tamborine Man (life-long Bob Dylan fan),
and 
I got Monday's FJ,
most likely because I didn't get as far as reading "less clumsy monosyllable." 
Note that the FJ clue stands alone without it:

  • "Cistern" & "reservoir" were suggested names for a secret invention, but the British preferred this less clumsy monosyllable

And then tonight, I got the TS of clay——but could only stare at the portrait of Madam X in my mind and not come up with "Sargent," probably because I got hung up on "3-named."
But then
my endorphins got going when I saw the FJ category of ART & SCIENCE. 
"Halley's Comet" was an instaget and I spelled it with 2 Ls!

So if hubris can jinx a person, my FJs for this week and the next are over, as per my usual game play.

I'm a little surprised no one guessed sovereign; I think looking at the coin rather than the word may have tripped them up.  I'm also surprised no one new clay.

The Pocahontas clue was awkward.  I mean, yes, that little tidbit is true; they have the wrong Rolfe, giving her son's name rather than her husband's.  But since the big problem is she was already a wife and mother when she was kidnapped and later had a forced/Stockholm Syndrome marriage, that's what they choose to ask about?  It wouldn't be notable, except they have a history of propagating myths about Native Americans in their clues, so this feels like more whitewashing to have that be the kind of thing brought up about her instead of ever asking about the important truths.

I ran TV shows (thank goodness for knowing Spanish), hoppy, and anagrams and got all but one in trees, but I missed three in portraits and two in Valentine's Day in the first round.

I did well in DJ; I ran two, got all but one in two, and only missed two each in the other two. 

For FJ, I figured it was a comet, and also figured it was a lesser-known one than Halley's.  Oops.

Me too - I knew it was wrong because trenches were not secret, but couldn't think of anything else once that was stuck in my head.

I guessed Venus for FJ, not very confidently; then I remembered that it was Valentine's Day and I was CERTAIN it had to be the correct response. She's the Goddess of Love, right?

Did the guy on the right not realize he had exactly half of the leaders score going into FJ?? Or did he just decide “Second place is good enough for me, I don’t want to win!” He guaranteed he would not win the game with that bet, even if he was the only one to get it right.

I did wonder about that too, but in his defense, he could still have won if Kendra had missed and wagered more than $100 (and if he'd gotten it correctly).

Yeah, typically they would follow up connected categories like this with the one that connects them— Bruce Springsteen in this case. (I’d have run that category.) I guess “Ye Olde British Money” was just too compelling to postpone.

Same here. Because the category was Arts and Science, I spent a few very confused moments trying to figure out what craft they could be referring to— découpage? Papier-mâché?— before realizing oh, that kind of craft. Then I had to work through the clumsy wording and register the “star” reference in order to get my mind away from sailboats and focused on spacecraft. I thought of and rejected Venus because no spacecraft have landed there. Then time was up, so I said, “screw it, Mars” although knowing it was wrong.

My husband guessed a comet (although not specifically Halley’s), but as contestant answers were being revealed, I argued that could not be right because you can’t visit a comet.

Him: Yes, you can. Several comets have been visited.
Me: No… you can’t land on a comet! They’re in motion!
Him: They just circle around, gathering data.
Me: That’s not visiting!! That’s observation!
Ken: Yes, Halley’s Comet.
Me: Bullshit.

I hated that FJ on several fronts.

But the point is that is not something she would have done. With exactly twice his score, her options are bet $0 or $1. And his only option is bet everything. Anything less and there is no way he wins.

I noticed that Trudeau rated a "be more specific" even though the clue specified 1965 and Justin wasn't born until 1971. I think the BMS was appropriate here and I think it should be used for most of the other edge cases like Bushes and Roosevelts and Mannings and Adamses where it's been waved away for some reason.

My favorite story about the two versions is when the Battlestar Galactica folks couldn't use Hendrix's version for a key element to the story, someone realized "Hey, it's Dylan's song" and were able to use his. More than one way to skin a rabbit, as the saying goes.

Aww, Steinbeck's my favorite, particularly GoW. That book is the first time the young me realized prose could be poetry. Then again, it was a banned book, so I was interested from the start.

But mileage varies.

I didn't have a particularly good game, though I almost ran Portrait of  a Lady and the Spirit awards.

With FJ, I didn't really parse it, and my thinking was very much like @30 Helens conversation with her husband. (mine got it too...)

Not a good night for me.  I only ran 3 categories (It Happened On Valentine's Day, Portrait Of A Lady & The Ghost Of Tom Joad) and got all but 1 clue in only 3 categories as well (State Trees, Come On Get Hoppy & The River).  I got the stumpers John Paul Jones, John Singer Sargent, sovereign and Oklahoma but did not get FJ.

Was anyone else hoping for some Springsteen clues?

Edited to note that I did get clay and cylinders.  I forgot about those.

I was hoping for Bruce to pop up in the Ghost of Tom Joad category because why else would they use his song/album title?  I would have settled for Bruce reading the clues and I normally despise the celebrity reading the clues categories.  Shoot, even having Tom Morello read those clues would have been better than what we got.

Ugh. Only ran On a Stamp, missed one in Landmarks and #1 Hits, I Have an Idea, and Conquers (surprised myself with that category, though); missed two in Class Menagerie and Love, three in Serving T for 3, Crafts, and All, and completely failed Schools. Also did not get FJ (I'm not even sure I've ever even seen the whole movie...). TS were intestate, moon, Inverted Jenny, and Lisbon.
