For a second or two, being asked someone's big-selling video release in 1982 made me think of porn stars, but then I realized J! wouldn't go there. 

After that reality check, Jane Fonda came to me quickly, since workout videos were my next thought, and hers were HUGE (count me among the 17 million).  I'm a bit surprised in this day and age two of them associated video so closely with music video, even though they weren't routinely individually released on videocassette.

I love how James is able to adjust his wagering strategy when it is warranted with two strong challengers, and damn if it still wasn't a runaway!

TS I got were virus, Bob Woodward, and one other that I can't recall. No idea for FJ but once the answer was revealed - d'oh! I can remember my mom, my aunts, and some neighbors doing the workouts when I was little.

Cool story! The WWII Museum is great isn't it. I'm glad that Ben is a nice guy. He & Josh Mankiewicz from Dateline are brothers.

Or young women at home start practicing to speak like that because it's so rad and "cool." Then they apply for and get on Jeopardy. And the cycle continues.

On another note, James doesn't remind me of anyone, necessarily, but I'd love to know his skin care regimen.  His skin is flawless-although he does look to be wearing quite a bit of makeup.  He looks more "unnatural" than most other contestants--almost like there's an Instagram filter over his face at all times.

I finally got around to watching some episodes and am impressed with James, but I had to laugh yesterday when he did his pushing in the chips motion. 

Maggie, the producer, warned us not to do that. She emphasized that we should say what our wager is on a DD, not make a gesture, and that a recent contestant had done that motion. Now I know who she was referring to.

Well, shoot. I accidentally closed my multiquote box, and since I went through 3 pages of comments (it's been a week...), I don't want to do it again. So here's what I remember.

Giving directions - I once read somewhere that the landmarks you use when you give directions is an indication of which buildings you notice and are important to you. The example that stuck with me was churches - a regular churchgoer would remember where all the churches are and use them as landmarks (I remember this, because in our small town I only remember where 1 church is). So whoever said McDonald's and the library? You're my kind of directions giver. 🙂

I owned the Fonda tape - exercised to it some - had some hot little exercise leotards, but did not get it. I was busy bouncing between Madonna and Cyndi Lauper (the early 80's are a bit of a blur). The Mister got it right away and was amused by my choices, since he remembers both the videos and the leotards. 😉

Yes. To me it's not that he looks like anyone but that he looks like he came from the Uncanny Valley, like he's not quite human and maybe AI. "HELLO FELLOW HUMANS. JUST RESPONDING TO CLUES IN THE FORM OF A QUESTION, HEH HEH. I, TOO, CELEBRATE MANUFACTURE BIRTH DATES."

Now that I'm done poking fun at him, I will say that I appreciate someone who is not afraid to make big wagers. That's always been the most frustrating part of watching Jeopardy for me. Unfortunately, even when you have a big bettor, the other contestants will often continue to make small bets even if the leader is so far ahead there is no way to catch up unless the trailer bets big when he or she gets a daily double. That's why appreciate Laura for making a $7000 bet even though it didn't pay off.

I don't like watching board hopping but I respect the game play aspect of it.

On a separate note, does anyone know exactly when this season of Jeopardy ends? I see past seasons have gone all the way through July.

The challengers were pretty good last night and rightfully seemed pleased with their performances against James - it was barely a runaway after all.

I know there were a few ts's but I didn't get any of them.

For FJ my first thought was Madonna but I quickly switched to Jane Fonda after searching the clue to make sure it didn't specify a music video.

Yes, of course a man would remember Jane's videos and the leotards. As to remembering what exercises Jane was doing, or what exercises anyone watching was doing (in her leotard), not so much. Imaginations run strong though. Best not to ask about that.

Yes, he def said "working it." That was Jane's catch phrase. She said it enough that it became a joke.

Not paying attention can be a big problem on that site!

The category is listed at the very top, in with the players' names. Scroll down a bit and the clue is a few inches below, in red. The answer is down way further, below the photos of the players. So you might know the category/clue, but you don't know the answer if you didn't scroll further.

Complete game coverage, winners and win $, etc., is posted sometime after 10 a.m. central along with who got what on DDs and what clue categories were left on the board, plus Andy's comments on the game which are always interesting.

Just a primer so people don't get accidentally spoiled!

That's short for Triple Stumper, which means none of the three players could answer it. We take some pride here in being able to answer what Jeopardy brainiacs cannot!

DD is Daily Double and TS is triple stumper, ie none of the contestants got the correct answer, either answering incorrectly or not answering at all.

No, I saw that - since I had seen the correct response, I wasn't worried about being spoiled, I was looking to see what the clue was.  My mistake was on the home page, not reading the date, and assuming "Today's FJ" was for the day prior, not realizing they had the new one up before the show aired.

LOL, yes, the key is knowing what day today is when you click on a home page link. Today's category/clue/answer is posted way early, before the results of the game are given to Andy. If I look before 10 a.m. central, I don't know who won but I do know FJ and the answer. After 10 a.m., complete results for that day are on the site for that day's game, even though the episode won't air until hours later.

I always look because I like being spoiled. I'm that low-stress person. It's also like being a little omnipotent, if even for one-half hour.

I don't see it that way, at all.  It think it was a weak bet and the opposite of bold!  She had $12,000; James had $28,000 pretty late in the game.  She bets $7,000, which, true, is better then the typical $2,000 or something, but still not enough to matter.  Assuming, as she did, she gets it wrong, she is left with $5,000, with no chance of catching the leader.  What was the point of conserving $5,000 (yes, want to play in FJ, but still have time to answer something correct to end in the black)?  This was her opportunity.  Bet it all (or, leave over $500 for FJ), get it right, she has $24,000 to James' $28,000.  Much closer then $19,000 she was aiming for (with additional clues still left on the board for James to increase his lead).  My issue is what is the point of holding back $5,000?  It serves no purpose.  She was "saving for a rainy day" in the middle of a torrential downpour.  Just my opinion.  That was Laura's opportunity to put herself into real contention and she let it pass.

For future reference, there is a Glossary thread explaining the various terms and abbreviations frequently used in discussing the show.  (It has good info, but it's not pinned, so it falls down the page, and no one new to the forum is going to know it exists and go looking for it.  But now you know for the next time you wonder what the hell we're talking about here.)

I agree with your assessment. Any bet more than $2,000 is considered "bold" now, but IMO very few players know how to use the DD to their benefit. James does. I wish others did, it would make for more exciting play. Most can't see the big picture and, therefore, are too conservative. Then they go home.

Well, damn. You are 100% right. I guess I wasn't paying attention to how much she had at the point she made the wager. I will say it was a bolder bet than some would have made but you are correct that it was not a bold bet. At least she could have possibly made the game not a runaway which I think is more than some contestants would have done.

I read an article in the paper about a study (several years ago) about directions. They were testing mice (rats?) in a maze that had symbols at various intersections. They would time how long it told the mice to complete the maze, over and over. Eventually, they would remove the symbols and retest the mice. They found that the male mice would do the maze in about the same amount of time as they did with the symbols, but the female mice would take longer. Their conclusion was that the female mice had learned "take a left at the triangle", but the male mice just learned at what point to take that left. So when the symbol was removed, the male mice knew where to take that left, because they had not paid any attention to the symbol, but the female mice were confused, because they relied on the triangle!

I don't like the "upside down" category picking, going bottom to top, but it actually makes sense as contestants, especially with the way the champion is betting.  You are more likely to have a greater amount of money this way for DD bets, you pick the bigger numbers earlier and accumulate more earlier in the rounds. 

Also this plays to his advantage because by the end with the supposedly easier clues, there is not enough money left to try to catch him or at least play into contention. 

Another win, though not a huge one by his standards

But I bet he lasts another week, then someone will use his doubling up strategy against him and beat him,.

Coincidentally, yesterday I was thinking about mice and mazes and wondering if the scientists clean the mazes betw tests. I would think that mice would be able to smell where they went before... although that wouldn't necessarily tell them if the way they went before was correct.

Jim Nabors is a pretty good similarity to James, though I would choose a pic where he's smiling more.

Googling, I saw a comparison betw Nabors and Eli Manning, so I thought I'd post a pic of Manning to see if anyone thinks HE looks a bit like James.

Still, I'm not finding the guy I think has the best likeness to James.

I had to google argonaut. It's a type of octopus. I never knew that, and I wish Alex had explained it. I knew the clue referenced the Argonauts, but I was trying to come up with a sea creature name that used a part of that word, which is what Jeff did with nautilus.

I was surprised by the morning glory ts.  I did get all of those except Argonaut, for exactly the same reason as you.  I did not know there was a mollusk by that name.

I would think the females would eventually find their way while the males would stumble around and finally think, the heck with it, and lie down to take a nap wherever they were. Well, if mice are anything like humans that is.

If James is reading here, he must think it hilarious that he looks like so many people. I personally think he's a twin for that dude from Naperville who is winning buckets of money on Jeopardy.
