Brief mention of the Duggars as being used as media-friendly faces to cover up the abuses. Probably nothing most Duggar-watchers don't already know, but a good overview. ;-)

I watched it too. I thought it was very well-done and as @2727 said, a good overview. They obviously took great pains to avoid a sensational tone, but a few times I wish they'd let 'er rip a little although I understand why they didn't.

The same producer published a video in late 2015 - Growing up Quiverfull - The Duggars' Destructive Cult. I'm sure it's been mentioned here before. It's the personal story of a young woman who grew up Gothard. She's also featured in the most recent video.

My favorite thing -- of course, since it's my undying theme -- is that the guy repeatedly stresses aspects of Gothardism that both attract and heavily enable control freaks. As in -- No, this isn't just a group that accidentally misguides lovely people who want their children to go to heaven, although it may do some of that; at heart, it's a group that explicitly and in multiple ways sets out to attract people who really really really want to control others.

Gothard, himself a control freak and also a disgusting greedy guts, obviously knew that the greed to control others is a powerful powerful motivation for people to pay -- and continue to pay for years -- to join his group, which includes many mechanisms to help control freaks maintain their control.

Gothard's a grifter, and like all grifters he launches his product toward an audience with a powerful emotional and psychological motivation to get that product because it will fulfill their deepest desires. And, like all good grifters, he understood which motivations are strong and which are puny. In this case --  that a rage to control others is the kind of ultra-strong motivation that can really pull in those buyers.  Way way more powerful as a motive to spend bucks -- for years -- and give the grifting cult leader your undying devotion than any desire to live a godly life or ensure your family's salvation ever ever could be.

EMLTA: Plus, you get to exert your control, with assistance, while being able to deny to everybody -- including and perhaps especially yourself -- that you're in it for control. You get complete plausible deniability to pretend that, instead of a control freak, you're really an ultra-loving father who is deeply anxious to help shepherd his wife and children through a safe and godly life and into heaven. ..... It's golden grift, the Gothard product. It has it all. No wonder he and his disgusting family have made money on it. (and tapped into a large vein of abusable women, to boot!)

when Sierra was cooking brownies and there was burnt stuff smoking up the house, I think Jana referred to that as the "hot kitchen". It had all that commercial type ovens, food serving areas and what not.

Interesting article. The author indicates they were raised Quiverfull but some of the organizations mentioned don't appear to be ones mentioned before with the Duggars. Still, very similar ideas.

My six year old daughter chose her own outfit today for church.  Leggings under a dress.  Totally Duggar approved!!

I tried to convince her otherwise, especially since the heat index is hovering near 100, but she refused. So, while she dressed like them, she's certainly not Duggar material!

I just have to put this out there:  after twenty years, it looks as if the Duggars are finally going to be bang on trend in one aspect:  Walking crosstown today I looked in the windows of both (1) H&M; and (2) Buffalo Exchange.  In both windows were:  Fragile slip dresses hung atop the world's ugliest, most gawdawful - tee-shirts.  It looked hideous.  Apparently it's en vogue now, though.  

(On the bright side, if you're a woman who puts off wearing or buying those slip dresses because you hate your upper arms, well, now's your season.)

I remember that being a look in the late 80s - early 90s. So, not surprised it's coming back now. I read somewhere recently that fashion trends tend to go on a 30 year cycle. (I'm holding out for 100 year cycle, and hoping as soon as we hit the 2020s we all start dressing in flapper dresses and dapper suits.)

Were they spaghetti straps?  I think that's why I found it particularly egregious.  By definition in my experience spaghetti straps are made for flippy slinky dresses, thus adding the tee seemed particularly clumsy.  It looked like sensory-clashing hell on the mannequin, thus I hoped that Buffalo Exchange window dresser just got a wild hair, but then I saw H&M's and my heart sank.

Is anyone actually buying those? All I see when I look at them is Monica circa season-one of "Friends". Add in some black clogs and tie a sweater around your waist and you're her exactly.

Fashion may be circular ... but that doesn't mean it's cute. If that's my alternative, I'll stick to the basic camis under every top I own, thanks.

Yep, spaghetti straps, t-shirt. Usually paired with thick white socks and chunky soled work boots.

I think it's absolutely fair to say. Jessa and Ben had a long courtship by fundy standards because he was so young, but he did move onto the property and they got to spend time around each other for several months before engagement. Jinger and Jeremy were long distance, but had the most opportunities for private conversations before engagement. 

Jill met Derrick for the first time via Skype with JB right there, went to visit him in Nepal with JB right there and then BAM was engaged to him. They saw each other a handful of times before they were married. 

Compared to both Joe and Joy, who I think had natural attraction to Kendra and Austin and got to actually TALK to them without pressure before engagement if even in a group setting. Their "courtships" were actually what courtships were like among the middle class 150 years ago, young people in the community would get together in public/group settings and chat, you got a sense of someone's background and general personality- once things were progressing the young man would ask to visit the young lady at home, have dinner, escort her to social things and an engagement would follow.

I think they had the least amount of time together and when they did communicate via text etc., they were heavily monitored. Might be contributing factor to them being mismatched.  Plus they are both nuts. ;)

Plus Jill "fell in love" with Triple D before she even met him in person. I think she was in love with the idea of love and he was the first one Boob suggested for her. I think back then, before Joshgate, Boob thought he would have loads of time and lots of choices for spouses and the show would go on forever featuring HIM!

As I was growing up, I knew something was wrong in my household, but it wasn't until I became a mother that I realized how messed up my own mother is and how damaging her "parenting" was.

I doubt Jill has had this come to Jesus moment (heh) but I'm willing to bet it's dawning on Jessa. Her mother's abandonment of a baby at six months has to be percolating in her mind as she manages having a toddler, whom she adores, and a baby. At the same time, her sister bestie is rejecting some of Duggardom.

But she also liked a Facebook page for a company called The Klassy Girl Boutique, which sells outfits such as this ...

We have a stupid rule we can't wear blue jeans to work any day but Friday. We can however wear demin skirts. I have a couple I wear when if a shirt doesn't look right with black or white jeans (which we are permitted to wear). However mine are defraudingly above the knee.

But nice ones that are current.  To my knee. With cute ballerina flats or other similar shoes.    Full disclosure:  I did grow up with the Fundie long denim skirts. Not all the time though.  But I did wear them. A lot.

I have a really cute knee-length denim skirt I got at Steinmart. It's stretchy and super comfortable. I think the Duggar girls gave denim skirts a bad name because they always paired them with those Polo shirts and God awful crunchy permed hair.

I don't like denim skirts -- I think that the fabric is too stiff for a skirt and, as a result, they don't hang nicely, and they don't move in a flattering way when a person walks.

That having been said, unless you spend your free time telling people how much better you are than they are because you wear denim skirts, and you're not busy posting on Facebook about how Jesus loves you best because of your clothing choices, I'm certainly not going to snark on your choice of a denim skirt with some cute ballerina flats. It sounds like it could be a really cute outfit.
