Good cliffhanger. It is sort of untoward that one detective thought to be getting too close to a case would be allowed to take out the alleged perp on an expedition to jog her memory.

I didn't like this episode. It could have been reduced to 15 minutes and combined with episode 7. And the sister sex scene was wack. Unless they are showing that the sister was part of some sex club.

Agreed on all points. You'd think another officer would have been required to go with them or something. It did feel like a lot of filler. I really don't care about Ambrose's dogwood trees! I mean, I guess that was an attempt to show his state of mind at the time. I was afraid he'd attempt to kiss Cora in the car or something. I got the sense with the sister it was like she was trying to live through Cora and wanted to know what it felt like because she didn't think she'd get to experience it herself. That didn't make it any less creepy! I was waiting for the mother to walk in and start beating Cora for corrupting her sister. I'm guessing much more will be revealed next week...

I think of all the episodes so far, this one seems the most like padding to me. The only scenes that really mattered, and the only ones that stuck out to me, were the sisters getting their Flowers in the Attic on, and the cliffhanger ending. The rest was just boring. Cora really seemed like a weak willed person, didn't she? If someone decided to hunt her in the park, she probably would have just been like "Did you want me to run, JD?" with her big doe eyes. She dosnt seem that passive now, maybe whatever happened subconsciously toughed her up?

I first thought that Phoebe just wanted to live vicariously through Cora, but looking back on it, she was looking at Cora kind of...weirdly when she was changing. Maybe she is just sexually frustrated and kind of unstable, or maybe she has some rather...Lannister style feelings towards her big sister. Other than that though, this episode was basically a total waste. It was hardly even set up for the final two episodes. We just needed to see the cliffhanger, and maybe the last scene with Cora and Phoebe (depending on how much that ties into the mystery), but other than that? Nothing.

Much of this show is preposterous. It's like a bad Lifetime movie. They certainly did not need 8 weeks for this to unfold. I really feel there will be no big shocker at the end. No big surprises. I wouldn't be surprised if Ambrose was the guy in that mask.

I can't stand the actress who plays Detective Farmer. She is a great talent from the NYC stage, but on this she is super annoying.

Yep I said this last week.  She almost makes me not want to watch anymore.  Every. Word.  Is.  Slow. and. Super. E-nun-ci-ate-ed.   She managed to make the word "else" have three syllables.  I guess it makes sense she's from the stage (I didn't know that), but she just doesn't speak like normal people do!

That sister is so gross and creepy she also makes me not want to watch.

There better be an amazing twist at the end or I want my eight hours back!!

God, what is wrong with us.....that sister scene...barf....yep, this was another fast forward special for me. This show is nasty, so here I am bitching about it. I need mental help. Yeah, what is wrong with that sister anyway, besides being a pervert?

The Sinner is so lurid and offers up nothing as it moves along. It is just wacky and I still want to know why Cora said Frankie was JD.

The sister is obsessed with sex and probably got Cora to take her to some party and she got killed there. The song was probably a trigger to remind Cora of that night.

And they shoehorned in this "kink" with Ambrose which for me no matter from what lens you view this detective, he is a wack job. That is why his wife wants nothing to do with him any more. Even the dominatrix walked away. He got way too close to Cora and crossed many professional lines. Ambrose needs to retire.

For me it is a lot about how much of the whites of her eyes show above and below the irises. And of course her sweet disposition :)

I'm surprised that Cora and the cop never happened upon the freaky wallpaper during their tour.

I wondered a few times if the sister is imaginary but since the parents have interacted with her it's doubtful.  Unless they created her and she is only real to them.  Have we actually seen the sister talk to the parents?

I told myself I was too through to even complain about this ridiculous show yet again but here I am with two thoughts. First, a million ewh!s to the sister sex scene. And secondly, USA owes me a new pair of eyeballs because when the prison released a confessed, violent murderer into the custody of an unarmed cop with with no armed escort and a full tank of gas with only a finger wag and "OK see you in two hours or we're gonna come after you...", my eyeballs jumped out of my head, rolled down the hallway into the elevator, out to the street, around the corner and disappeared into a Manhattan-bound C train.

That would never be allowed without a court order. And a judge would almost never agree to that.... because a detective is on his own personal mission to find out "Why." He is a detective, not a DA.

The two of them could have lammed it. This show is beyond ridiculous for so many reasons.

Your post is 100 times more entertaining than this show.

Do we know what Phoebe is actually dying from?

I'm beginning to suspect some form of Munchausen's. Whether the normal variant or by proxy, I don't know. But this family is just screwed up enough that either seems plausible. On the other hand, the poster who asked if we've ever seen the sister in a scene other than with Cora... now that's an interesting observation. Cora having MPD would explain a lot, although I'd hoped they come up with something less "done". It was the first thing I thought of in episode 1 and with all the other crap they've been throwing at the wall, I forgot about it. There was a scene where the Dad carried Pheebs into the bedroom, but I don't remember another.

I had been thinking that Phoebe died (IF she died) while Cora was missing. That she was there when Cora left for that night, and the fact that she never came back is what killed Phoebe and why her parents blame her for Phoebe dying. CAuse of course, they think it was her choice to stay away.

Ambrose could have been killed by Cora like in the final scene of the movie "Identity." He interacts with her like she is normal and just made a mistake. She is a murderer. In real life, he would never be alone with her and feel safe.

But we had to have that useless time wasting scene of him (and maybe us) thinking she had bolted on him when he uncuffed her and didn't watch her. Well the whole episode was just using time to stretch out to the 8 episodes. The next one better not be filler!

The scene where Cora wouldn't answer Phoebe's phone call, Phoebe had a panic attack and her mother, father and a paramedic were interacting with her.

So, does no one here like this even just a little (if so, please show up and post with me; I want to read opinions and shit, regardless of the ridiculousness!)? Even as a huge fan of actual true crime (books, docs, podcasts, everything), I have no issue with it; I not only find it entertaining but I also look forward to watching it and am super-curious to get the answers--impatient even. If OnDemand put up all the episodes right now, I'd binge 'em! Might even read the book.

Not that this has anything to do with anything, and not that Jessica Biel isn't very pretty, but she also often sort of looks like she's been sucking a lemon!

When Ambrose visited Cora’s parents, the father told Ambrose she had a form of lymphoma and died two months after Cora left.

The mother was holding the baby when she first told Cora that it was her fault Phoebe was sick and she’s been with Phoebe a few times, not the least of which was when Cora didn’t come home from her date with JD until morning and Phoebe was surrounded by her parents and paramedics. I think it was then that Cora had to kneel on rice and pray.

And IIRC, the mother was with Phoebe in the hospital after that.

All signs point to Phoebe being real, being truly ill, and being a manipulative little bitch.

I do. I like its bizarreness and unreliability. I do not think Ambrose’s marital woes or kinks have anything to do with anything, which annoys me a tidge, as well as all police protocol (I graduated from the University of Law & Order, so I’m totally versed) going out the window, but yeah, I really do like it. I also liked Falling Water and I like Preacher. Totally bizarre. I like the lead-ups and the tension. YMMV.

Jessica Biel looks like any mother of my friends’ kids who stays in shape. She’s not remarkable. In fact, I would say ubiquitously pretty.

IMO, Ambrose is interested in her to try to Fix Something since he can’t fix anything else in his life and he’s pretty much powerless. He’s trying to grasp some personal relevance, if only for himself. The bird watching isn’t cutting it anymore.

Oh good! I mean, I'm picky about shows for some dumb reasons ("aesthetic" being one--sometimes I bail if something merely looks unappealing to me; Twin Peaks: The Return was driving me nuts, but I did stay with it) but this show is not setting me off in any negative way so go figure. I dig it.

J.D. totally had Phoebe pegged in the flashbacks.  I mean, sure, he's still a creepy drug dealer with a cult leader like feel to him, but it doesn't make him wrong! Now that he is dead in the present, I'm extra happy for the flashbacks now, because Jacob Pitts continues to be one of, if not the, best thing about this.

So, the show thankfully avoided any of the parents molestation stuff with Cora's parents, but instead go all squicky incest with Cora and Phoebe.  I blame Cersei and Jaime Lannister for making this all the rage now!

Ambrose is an idiot for not only handcuffing Cora, but then giving her the moment to wander off, by stepping away to speak on his phone.  He honestly would have deserved to have the rug pulled under him and it be revealed she is actually a sociopathic killer this entire time, who was just waiting for her moment.

I'm definitely over the state cop already.  The actress just isn't working.  Plus, I notice her appearance has reduced the screen time for Ambrose's partner, and I keep thinking I might have found it more interesting if he was the one that was opposite of Ambrose and pointing out his mistakes and obsession.  Granted, that could be because I really liked Dohn Norwood as Psalms in Hell on Wheels, and I think he deserves better.  Granted, Abby Miller equally deserves better then to just be a bad cop and make doe-eyes at Mason.

At least it looks like the big reveals will finally be happening next week.

I like the show more than many here but not as much as initial reviews seemed to love it.  It's equally watchable and snarkable.

But in terms of ratings, it has pretty much just gone up and up.  The 2nd week dipped in total viewers but made it up the next week and has been climbing ever since.  And except for a small dip last week, the demo has consistently gone up as well.

I don't know if Jessica Biel will star in it, I suspect not, but I would bet USA will try to find a way to get a second season out of this.

There are probably a lot of guys watching just to see if Jessica Biel is going to do anything sexy. She hasn't been in the public eye much lately.

I like the show well enough. This episode dragged, and the scene with the sisters has scarred me for life, but I'm overall enjoying the show.

Good! I've become accustomed to you and me being on the same page here at PTV, haha!

Oh, not to worry.  I think even those of us complaining about the slow tempo and the extra padding are . . . intrigued.  (I have no problem dropping a show or quitting a book if I'm not getting any positive reinforcement.)

It would be great if I'm sitting here in two weeks with my eyes popping and my mouth hanging open.  I don't think it's going to be as amazing as all that, because I already have a strong suspicion that's not an urn full of sister ash--ha!--but good production values, A- name brand casting and the popularity of the source material all make me think there's a satisfying payoff coming.  Gimme!

See you next week, same Batchannel.

You know, no matter how unrealistic it is and all that, I can't help but think of some of the recent true-crime docs that are, in all honesty, just about as full of WTF-ery as this show! The Imposter, Mommy Dead and Dearest, The Keepers, even ol' Aunt Diane...

That's it. I'm out. First the scene with the fat hooker, or whatever she is, choking sicko Pullman. Then the scene between Cora and Phoebe!!!!  Nope, nope, and nope. Are there no standards left? This is TV. Basic cable that is pretty universally available.
