I watch way too much Investigation Discovery, so I understood the format right away. But André Holland is more attractive (and younger) than Cuba Gooding Jr.—the opposite of what usually happens on true crime TV reenactments.

Ha ha, me too! I watch just about everything on Investigation Discovery! It's my jam. :-) I think I am going to like this. It's like if those reenactment shoes were reenacted by better looking, and more talented, people. :-)

Disclosure: Paranormal Witness has been courting me for years, trying to turn one of my personal stories into an episode. I have spent countless hours on the phone with the producers. The one reason I have backed out, so far, is because they seem to want to embellish, or at least misrepresent, my story. I imagine that others who have appeared on the show have let them, kind of given them what they want, but I won't. So this season of AHS is kind of like a Paranormal Witness or True Haunting Dream-real ghost stories without the pesky truth, ha ha. :-)

I have heard this before Paranormal Witness. I think if you don't let them do what they want to embellish your story they won't do your story.

Does anyone know if we stay with these characters for the season or if each episode is a different story?

I just have one comment: That house, despite the ghosts was awesome!! Jesus, a house that cool with a outdoor hottub a winding staircase, and 10 acres of woods all for $40,000?

As we're watching this my notoriously cheap husband told me to never let him get a house like that for that amount of money.

At first I thought it would be some kind of weird bugs falling on the house,(I HATE bugs!) Then you think it's hail....but then finding out they were human teeth was crazy. I'll take the teeth over the bugs any day!

Tv/movie Pet peeve# 73   It makes me crazy whenever you see an auction scene and the people are biding with close amounts then one person will shoot the price WAY up so the other won't bid anymore.... When Matt went from from 25,000(?) to 40,000, I was like  No,no no.... just go up gradually because eventually the hillbilly boys can't afford that much. Ok, pet peeve over.

Did anyone think while Shelby was cutting the carrots and then  heard a noise......don't you dare put that knife down, don't you.....

And then she does! I'd be carrying that thing with me if I went wandering around the house checking for noises.

Great scenes with Paulson and Bassett, especially that big arguing scene.  Even though she's company for Shelby it sucks living in a house with someone you do not get along with at all.

Pretty sure Kathy Bates was who Shelby hit and Wes Bentley was in the woods.

Wes Bentley was definitely in the woods. I missed Kathy Bates though.

I chuckled at "OJ" & "Marcia" being married too. I adore Angela Bassett so I was glad to see her. The actors are great - it's a good cast - I'm just not quite sold on the story yet.

I don't hate watch the show, but I don't love it. (Wednesdays at 10 are packed. Queen Sugar is the best show in that slot, IMO.) I enjoy all the actors that tend to pop up on Ryan Murphy shows. Last season things went full camp, and that was a lot of fun. The show wasn't particularly scary, it was gory and funny at times. This season looks like it's really going for scary.

They were definitely pushing for things that weren't there. For instance, they kept pushing me to encourage more of my friends and family to come forward and be interviewed-whether they knew anything about what they were meant to be speaking of or not. It's all bizarre. Still, although RAW TV is still in charge of the show, they DO have some new producers. I like the latest batch. It might still work out if we can reach some kind of understanding.

As far as this continuing on...I think there will probably be 2-3 parts per story. Then they might move on to something else. I am interested to see where this is going. It DOES seem like they threw a bunch of elements of other stories into this one as possible (Blair Witch, Amityville, and a host of Southern Gothic movies) but that might not be a bad thing. I loved what STRANGER THINGS did, for instance. As long as it is done well I don't mind so much.

I am still perturbed about the whole "Roanoke" thing, though. If they're going to call the chapter that, why make the distinction of it being in North Carolina? Things like that bug me, though. The people around me LOVED the Garth Brooks' song "Beaches of Cheyenne" but I could never get past the fact that Cheyenne does not, in fact, have an ocean.

I like that this season feels more season 1, slow build, instead of last season all at once Hotel. Hotel was all extreme, all the time, no breaks, something is HAPPENING! every scene, so many stories going on, Lady Gaga is a vampire.  I just don't know how I feel about the big scare, because like another poster said, the dolls from the woods are very Blair Witch and I'd probably like this season more if there wasn't a Blair Witch sequel coming out now. Like why couldn't this season be last season? Other than that, I didn't feel as disgustingly sick as I did during hotel's first episode, so I can stick around.

must say I will never, ever, stay alone in a house in the middle of deserted woods. It would be creepy under any circumstances. And

Agree !!!! I would never be sitting out in that hot tub in the woods ? I get creeped out if I get home late or have to put garbage out , or have to look out the window into darkness and I don't live in the woods haha.  When I've driven in dark roads in upstate New York I keep expecting someone to jump out in front of the car lol.  So this is up my alley

Thank you! That makes much more sense. When I think of Roanoke then I think of the historic Roanoke, VA. So I imagine this will tie into the lost colony.

Waiting for Wes Bentley, of course. But also Denis O'Hare and, to my great surprise, Evan Peters, who completely won me over last season as Mr. March.

I think we did get a glimpse of beautiful Wes there at the end. Evan is one of the main reasons I watch, always. I already liked him from a few small roles before AHS, but tortured pretty Tate killed me. Metaphorically speaking.

I will be so pissed if they hide him under pig man makeup.

That's the point of the song, though - a cowboy died doing rodeo in Cheyenne while his wife was back in California, and she went crazy in her grief and ran out in the ocean and committed suicide. So she haunts the beach, walking the sands "of Cheyenne" (so poetic). I've had a theory it was Garth's little homage to "Ocean Front Property", where from George's front porch in Arizona he can see the sea.

Back on topic, the stick figures hooked me. That creepy device freaked me the heck out watching Blair Witch Project, and it did it again here. Although I admit, I'd be curious to see AHS: The Mist.

I was surprised when this episode was over because I felt it went by too quickly - and with too many damn commercials! I was a bit annoyed by this episode because my mom and sister were confused and I had to keep explaining everything to them, which took me out of the story. I loved the house, though my mom and I laughed at it being only 40k. There's a haunted house by me that was probably a quarter of the size that went for 200k and that was with only 5 acres. Anyway, the framing of the show was interesting for the first few minutes but got annoying. I really hope they don't do that for the rest of the season. The last two minutes of "Into the Woods featuring Kathy Bates" was probably the best, in my opinion. I love when AHS is creepy, though I also enjoy the comedic parts. I'll be tuning in, but I always tune in, even for trainwreck shows. (Except for "The Lottery" because that was just insulting to the viewers.)

Like I said, there were parts I liked but parts I didn't. I don't know if I liked the framing device too much, that bugged as well. I wouldn't have minded if the "real people" started the story and then each episode started. I didn't like them telling us what was about to happen or what just happened. It kind of bugged me, like we are going to see it, or we've seen it, we don't need you to keep telling us. I totally understand what the show is doing but, it bothers me and it  did in a way take me out of the show at times. I wonder if RM did it this way so he can have actors he likes around.

My comments while this was on were pretty much "nope nope nope nope nope nope" (particularly when it rained teeth), "Leave now!", and "What are you doing, bitch?" regardless of gender.  Why did these people insist on walking outside in the dark so much?

So yeah, this premiere hit all of the right notes, with the bonus of no one being raped with a gold pointed dildo. I saw Wes Bentley as one of the torch people, and I'm guessing that was Kathy Bates that Shelby hit. Damn it, I was actually unnerved by this episode.

And as an Investigation Discovery junkie, the reenactments just made sense to me. Full disclosure, I've never seen the Blair Witch Project, so all I saw was little creepy stick people and thought, "Why they still there? This is clearly not a good situation!"

I kind of feel like this season is called "AHS6: A Response To Y'all Telling Ryan Murphy He Loses The Plot In Episode 5 Every Season."

Me too. I'm really glad that so far (well, for one episode) the story is streamlined and linear without a lot of side "cool visual that ultimately distracts from the plot and is left dangling" stuff wedged in. And a complete lack of raping so far!  Keep on this track, Murphy.

So I actually had to Google this, and the whole Roanoke thing is a deliberate mislead. The famous Lost Colony of Roanoke Island was indeed located on Roanoke Island, in North Carolina. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roanoke_Colony Virginia Dare, the first white child born on the continent, was one of the lost colonists.

However, there is also a Roanoke in Virginia which is a thriving city and also goes back to Colonial times. The show apparently takes place in North Carolina, though.

You know what they say about too good to be true...

However,  I'd like to know some things:  one, who the hell was maintaining this property?? You can't tell me that a farmhouse built in Colonial days stays that intact by itself. It should be filled with broken glass, stained mattresses, old porn magazines and angry raccoons. Not one broken window, not one rotted floor. And how is it that the local Historical Society never took any interest? A property like that in that kind of shape would be a gold mine and a wonder.

Two, since the place was clearly being sold at auction for whatever it could bring, how long it take the bank, or state, or whoever owned the property to auction it off? I can't imagine the state of NC wanted to have this white elephant sitting around for too long not generating any tax revenue.

I'm originally from North Carolina, so I'm going to put on my geography nerd hat for a sec: while there obviously is a Roanoke Island, there sure as hell aren't any mountains on that island or any woods like the woods in this episode, so that annoys me.  I'm also annoyed by the fact that North Carolina looks an awful lot like Santa Clarita, but whatever.

Cuba was predictably bad, but aside from that and my geography annoyances, this was fun.

Ha ha, I know that's the point. I wasn't trying to argue about it, it was just one of those things I could never deal with. It runs in the family, My mom, for instance, hates the song "Jolene" because she strongly dislikes the sound of the name itself. She's never known anyone named Jolene or anything. No nasty husband snatcher in her past-she just doesn't like it so she can't listen to the song.

The creepy stick figures, a la Blair Witch hooked me too! Just the visual of them strung up in the trees and at the house had me spooked. I enjoy little simple things like that. That creeps me out much more than jump scares or gore.

I think that is what threw me off. Along with the name "Roanoke" which, like I said, I associate with Virginia (and honestly did not get the Roanoke settlement reference until I read theories here on the forum tonight) it physically reminded me of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Roanoke Valley, VA so I sat there the whole time wondering how they could be in both NC and VA at the same time. :-) (Although those mountains still didn't look totally like the geographical area, either. That's my original home.)

  • House was up for auction, they never asked why or who were the previous owners?  I'd never buy an old creepy house anyways regardless of price. High rise lofts are less likely to be haunted plus you're never alone. Just call the concierge. Ghosts and demons really like creepy old houses.
  • When the sister and Shelby went downstairs to investigate, the sister grabbed a hammer, why didn't Shelby grab something....anything, a screwdriver, a flashlight, a wrench. Anything is better than nothing. Multiplier of strength
  • So you hit the creepy lady w your car, first instinct is to grab a flashlight?  Mine would bet to tell your husband what happened. I could hear him on the speaker phone. If a lady gets up and starts walking, no need to follow, just call 911
  • Lots of peeps in the country get dogs. Why - they scare off critters, coyotes, snakes ect.  They also serve as alarm systems for intruders and are good at protecting/ defending your home. More Importantly, in horror movies they can sense demons and ghosts.  Get some if you live in the woods.

Felt like it would be an anthology season but when there wasn't a conclusion I guess not. Maybe two parts for each story? It just doesn't feel like they can sustain this premise for 10 episodes. Not looking forward to a whole season of talking heads and reenactments, but I might be surprised.

I wasn't bored exactly but I far from loved it.

It felt a bit cheap compared to previous seasons, too. American Horror Story: Budget Cuts. But since these True Story reality shows tend to look cheap anyway perhaps there was a point with that.

And goddammit, France's Conroy's out for yet another season.

There's absolutely no way AHS would give us a story where we know the main characters survive to tell the tale, so I'm definitely in the camp that doesn't expect the mockumentary format to last. If we're watching the finished product, the documentary will end at some point and we'll pick up where we left off with the "real" people. But more likely, I think we're watching as it's being filmed, and at some point filming will be interrupted by a real haunting.

As I think the mockumentary thing might get stale, I hope they're doing this, and I think it could be really great. So far it certainly seems a LOT more focused than the past few seasons, but it could certainly go off the rails.

I agree. Something about the casting and the formatting of the mockdocumentary struck me as being off. The supposed "real" characters are so much younger than the characters in drama playing out. Usually it is the reverse so it must mean something. I expect the two casts will merge at some point and the terror will hit the film crew and the "real" characters.

In 2015 Archaeological evidence of Roanoke was found, including Border Ware Pottery dating to the 15th Century. The artifacts were found 50 miles inland and give credence to the idea that the lost people of Roanoke moved inland and joined the Native Americans living there. It's possible that this season will deal with what happened to the colonists after they moved inland and joined native tribes.

The ambiguity with what happened to the colonists after the disappeared may give the ASH writers more creative license

At first I was a bit confused with all the talking heads then they showed the reenactment with text on screen and everything I figured the format is similar one of those cheesy ghost story shows I like to watch, so I don't mind it. (I hope that Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe would share the screen at some point though)

This episode was a bit slow at the beginning then it got creepier. Raining teeth? Dead pig? Blair witch sticks in the forest? I'm in! Still had no idea where the storyline is going but I'm gonna stick around for a couple more episodes. Hopefully Gaga won't ruin it when she shows up

This is just chapter 1 and who knows where it will go and that is kind of the fun for me.  I know a lot of people don't feel the same and didn't  like Hotel (which I thought was awesome) but I think one of the best things about the show is that it is More  or less unpredictable.

I like both the story telling aspect and the reenactment aspect of the first chapter.  The house was stunning and yet held the right amount of Innate creepy.  Just enough beauty that you understand why the couple would shell out their life savings to buy the place even with the hills have eyes creepers and yet enough creepy that you want to slap the husband for leaving his noticeably worried wife alone.

The acting is always awesome.  Hi Lily Rabe.  I hope you get more to do and even if you don't. it's nice to see you again.  Never leave us.  Sarah Paulson is as always one of the reasons I will stick with this show forever.

This most definitely has potential.

I really like the beginning of this season.  I actually like the documentary style they did and I have to admit it took a minute to realize the talking heads were actors, expecially when I saw the actress who played Tara's mother from True Blood as the guy's sister.

My take on this episode.  Spot on in the vein of My Haunted House or Paranormal Survivor.

Yes, there are many out there who will see the creepy house and still buy it with all their savings so that they cannot just move.  It is a running joke in my circle when watching the eyewitless accounts of a family's ordeal with the paranormal which always have me screaming at the TV.

I had a big problem when they bidded on the house and there was no real good reason why the sale was so low and only some skeevy mountianeers were also bidding on what looked like a mansion in the woods.  AND if I were pulled into the hot tub by unseen hands with pitchforks and torches, I would be calling my husband from the HOTEL ROOM IN TOWN and I would not give a rat's patootie about losing money on that property.

The only part that was what I myself would do is leave the house as fast as I can.  If the woman I hit got up and went into the woods, I would just keep on driving and I would let my husband know what happened and that I WON'T be coming back.

I was wondering about that too.

Also, are there rumors that there is something "off" about the house, hence the cheap price?  If so, how local is OJ to the area, and why hadn't he heard about these rumors, either recently when investigating the house -- because I doubt they were just driving around, randomly showed-up at an auction and purchased the house -- or when he was growing-up?  But then his sister didn't seem to know anything about the house either.

They sort of explained it.  They were hiking in the woods and came upon it.  Now I do have to agree with Constantinople that hubby should have heard something about this house but after seeing so many paranormal survivor, a Haunting and The Haunted, people just don't keep up with the legends of their town so ...well...  However, I would have been very wary of an abandoned house in the woods that is in pristine condition and no one wants to live there but me and the "Deliverance" gang.

Just a side note;  That was indeed Chaz Bono we saw.  It was confirmed.  http://www.newnownext.com/chaz-bono-american-horror-story/09/2016/

I also wanted to mention that this season is (very) loosely based on the Roanoke Colony from the 1500s that went missing.

Okay, a little unexpected. My Roanoke Nightmare is an interesting enough theme and the Paranormal Activity style documentary is actually fun.

Having Sarah Paulson/Lily Rabe, Cuba Gooding Jr/Andre Holland and Angela Bassett/Adina Porter effectively play the same characters is an interesting approach and done well in this episode.

I felt they toned down the more outlandish horror they usually do even if we did get a man wearing a pig's head, creepy rednecks and hailing teeth in this one.

Even with the smallest of screentime, Kathy Bates is creepy as hell. I love that she's going to be a villain again this season.

Shelby, Matt and Lee are sympathetic and engaging enough protagonists. I also feel there was an attempt here to recapture the 'innocence' of the first season and it mostly worked.

That being said, the secrecy surrounding this season was tedious and unjustified but this is still a great start to things, 7/10

I am in 100% agreement with this.  Big houses in the middle of nowhere creep me out, so this worked for me. As soon as it starting raining teeth I would have been out of there.  No way I would've stayed in the house by myself while my husband was away for work and I certainly would NOT have gone out to the hot tub at night.  Alone.

I kind of liked the reenactment format.  I don't watch Investigation Discovery, but I've seen enough of those "true crime" shows that use dramatic reenactments that I knew what they were doing.  I'm curious if they'll keep it up for the whole season.

I suspect that Gaga will show up for an episode or two later in the season.

For now, I'm digging it. But I always like the first few episodes each season before the writers screw it up.
