The Duggars post about politics on social media frequently, but these social media posts are not an invitation to discuss politics here in this forum. This rule extends to Duggar adjacent families, friends, associates etc. Such discussions are a violation of the Politics Policy.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss certain social media postings of those in the Duggar realm as they relate to politics- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

You're not referring to children who are walking, are you?? I've lived in the South my entire life and I've never seen children in church (Easter or any Sunday) dressed in nice clothes but no shoes! Babies, maybe. But not walking children! I hope you meant babies - people stereotype the South enough as it is lol!

Yes-these are walkers up to around age 5 or so. These are my 2 after a wedding at ages 3 and 7.

That has got to be a Southern thing.  I cannot picture anyone I know wanting barefoot kids at their wedding, let alone in the wedding party.  The style of clothing is also not like any sort of flower girl/ring bearer outfits I've ever seen.  I did attend a wedding in Atlanta last fall, but, even though it took place outdoors and there were several young kids in the bridal party; all of them wore shoes and dressed in typical kids' wedding attire. Maybe this is more rural South?

ETA: Your kids are adorable.

Cute kids! I could see barefoot kids at a wedding, if it fits in with the general feeling of the wedding. Shabby-chic, if you will. I'd be shocked to see it at, say, a Catholic mass in a cathedral.

I still can't imagine 5 year olds all dressed up in expensive outfits going to church barefoot! At least not any church I've been to - and they're all in the South!

I'm not Southern, but I would guess it's something that's supposed to evoke innocence or angels. I'm not sure I've ever seen an angel depicted as wearing shoes, though aside from naked cherubs, they do seem to wear some pretty fancy looking robes sometimes.

I'm not southern, but I would image it's to do with weather. It probably goes back to when there was no air conditioning. Assuming the people could afford shoes they would probably get all sweaty and smelly etc. Shoes were expressive unlike today, and mostly leather. So hot sweaty leather shoes. It makes sense.

Whatever the reasoning, I'm from the north and I find this interesting.  @AUgirl Thank you for sharring your culture!

I don't know if this explanation applies to the Seewalds, but I was about to say that I think being barefoot in expensive and/or dressy clothes (and at events where it's unexpected) -- for young children or even for everybody -- seems to be a fad among some very well-off people (with a trendsetter fetish, perhaps). I've encountered it at one expensively catered evening party (where it was kids and a handful of their moms) -- in the mid-Atlantic, not the south -- and I've seen a bit of it in the media (where it's been a wide range of people)

A quick Google suggests that that is what's going on. .... Here's an example from England, where it's cool and rainy. So hot weather may not have much or anything to do with it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/news/why-going-barefoot-has-become-the-new-status-symbol/

It's a fashion thing, in other words. So maybe it's part of Jessa's claim to being the Fashion Arbiter of Fundiedom. (I actually don't think so -- I think in her case it's just babies.)

Barefoot walkers is not happening in the NYC area but it is trendy here to photograph the kids in nice clothing and have them barefoot. Never seen anyone walking around barefoot in a church, building etc.

I don't really care what the heck people wear on their feet.  I just worry about plantar warts, splinters, injury.

Yeah, I've seen photographs like that. .... In the above article, it appears that Julia Roberts (to go with a recent PTV19K theme) was barefoot in a black floor-length red-carpet dress at the Cannes festival last year.

So I guess the much-maligned Jilly Muffin was just a hair ahead of a big rich-people trend!

Yes, Jilly Muffin was a style setter!!!!  Imagine that!  I'm so proud!  (sniff, sniff)

Jill was REALLY ahead of the fashion world when she and Derick were photographed barefoot in a hospital!  Such a dreamy place to walk around barefoot among the medical waste and body fluids...ahhh....such sweet memories....

My grandchildren live in then pacific northwest and my daughter in law loves getting their pictures made for chanukah, passover, family group birthday shots, etc. and I cannot tell you how many of them have the kids barefoot (or as the granddaughter used to say "bare-a-foot".  She likes it.  Kids don't care.  When we are in the pictures, we are "bare-a-foot" too.  We are not fundies, we are not rich, and I don't think we are trendsetters.  Maybe some people just like it, and it is easier than getting white mary janes for the girls and similar for the boys?

So I guess the much-maligned Jilly Muffin was just a hair ahead of a big rich-people trend!

Just to clarify: Julia Roberts walked the red carpet at Cannes barefoot as part of a protest.  The authorities at the film fest have a dress code that specifies that all women walking the red carpet at premieres are REQUIRED to wear stiletto heels.  Apparently, security at the festival has actually forcibly removed women from the red carpet who were deemed to not meet the criteria including women wearing platforms or booties..  Because she is a celeb and knew they wouldn't dare prevent her from walking the carpet and because she knew it would generate publicity; Julia Roberts deliberately removed her shoes to make a point.  Many others followed suit.

So, love her or hate her, Julia Roberts took off her shoes for a good reason in support of others and against stupid rules.

ETA: I've worked in hospitals for more than 35 years and remain astounded at how some people behave.  Not only do people parade around barefoot, they let their little babies crawl in public spaces and, in the waiting areas, people frequently sprawl out all over the floor sleeping.  For God's sake, anyone who is that tired should go the he** home! Aside from the heath risk, it's just plain rude.  And nobody should bring their healthy child into a hospital if it can be helped, let alone let the kid crawl all over floors where not only have hundreds of people walked, but where someone might've bled or peed or puked.  Hospitals are germ factories.

Apropos of nothing, I'm watching a hockey game between St. Louis and Minnesota to kill time before the WARRIORS game in about 10 minutes. There's a guy named Spurgeon on one of the teams. I guess he's pretty good, because they say his name a lot.

But it's CREEPY! LOL

The venue manager in me would find this to be a potential problem.  You never know whats on the floor (even though its cleaned) and if the child had something drop on their feet or stepped on something that injured them the venue could be responsible.  So I am of the opinion shoes need to be worn inside unless its your own house.  But I am a strict manager.

And where were real hospital personnel?  Mr. lookeyloo has been hospitalized twice recently and the staff must have radar because they were there saying "you cant walk barefoot, put on these socks".  the one with grippers so he didn't slip.  Honestly, they appeared out of nowhere when he tried to skip the socks.  And we're not talking Cedars of Sinai where the rich movie stars go and seem to have special treatment.

Now, now, Jill IS a medical professional.  I am sure the staff was so impressed by her awesome handling of her own pregnancy, labor and delivery; that they let her manage her hospitalization, too!  If Jill was barefoot, well, she knows best!

In reality, while I wasn't there, I can just imagine the conversation during chart rounds and in the break room.  You think this place is snarky?  Hang around labor and delivery and listen to the staff sometime.  I expect Jill was the butt of a whole lot of jokes and sarcasm, probably for months afterwards.

Even the VA hospital, where I worked at for 31 years, gave each patient gripper socks.  Green for walkers, yellow for fall precautions, grey for confused. Hospital floors and barefeet are gross.

My mom must have been way before her time. Back in the early 80s she took my younger sister and me to the mall for just a random Saturday wandering around trip and decided we looked extra cute that day and hiked us into Sears when we got to that end of the mall to have pictures taken, total spur of the moment thing. We were in lovely orange and yellow tank tops, awesome 80's yellow terry cloth shorts, and flip flops. Got us up on the table to pose and took the flip flops off our feet. It's her favorite pictures of us and out of the many torturous times she took us to Sears, the only pic of us as kids that's still on display in her living room. Happens to be one of the only times I remember my sister NOT crying thru the before, during, and after of the whole fiasco.

The nurses at my local hospital must have had the same training. Lol.  They have even gone as far as checking other rooms to get me a pair of socks while I had to patiently wait for their help getting to the bathroom. But I do appreciate their care.

Well, Hannie will be about 12 the next time Jessa spits one out. They'll probably be in the Pool House by then, so there will be more room in the nursery for her to have her own bed to take care of any of those irritating night feedings. Yes, I bet Jessa and her pal Sierra are pumping like madwomen (or in Sierra's case, was). I read somewhere that she actually has PCOS. If true, I'm surprised she got as many as she did, but it would explain the drought between 5 (who is what, two weeks younger than Spurge?) and.....

tl;dr Hannie and Jennie will be plenty old enough to be competent sister-moms by the next time Jessa whelps. Ben will probably still take the semester off, unless it happens to be due during summer, in which case, he has no excuses. Students don't have weeks to take off at a time to go on multi-state Tour Bus trips, followed by a 3 day trip in the middle of the week to visit some HGTV gurus. IF he's in school, it sure isn't live class. I've done online classes both live and on message boards, and I got far more from live interaction than responding to what others had written on the manditory conversation boards.

About the author. He's an apologetic. I wonder if he hangs with fellow apologetic Ken Ham (excuse me while I go laugh my ass off, thinking Ken Ham is a reasoned person). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_White_(theologian)

And this is what Wikipedia says about author, James R. White.

"White often engages in public debate, having participated in more than 150 public moderated debates,[2] covering topics such as Calvinism, Roman Catholicism, Islam, Mormonism, the King James Only movement, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Atheism. His debate opponents have included scholars such as Bart Ehrman, John Dominic Crossan, Marcus Borg, Jose Ventilacion[3] and popularizers such as Dan Barker and John Shelby Spong[4] as well as Islamic scholar Shabir Ally and South African Muslim apologist Yusuf Ismail."

So basically what he does for a living is tell everybody else they're dead wrong, all day every day. You can see why this would appeal to Bin, since it's what he (and all the other Duggars and Duggar-adjacents) are devoted to doing. I think your chances of actually arguing the rest of the world out of their religious beliefs are probably pretty slim, though. Although I'm sure James White is probably better suited to it than Binny, who can barely put a basic sentence together. This guy's life is definitely what he aspires too, though. And the guy's a Calvin-tinged Baptist, right in there with today's Calvinism, babies-are-born-corrupt theological fad. The Duggars really are loving that one, and my guess is that they love it mainly because it's trendy. (and because it provides lots of ammunition to use the internet to say that everybody's sinful, of course.)

11 hours ago, RazzleberryPie said:

At a certain point he'll probably have to. Because imagine what his resume will look like after a few babies. If JB stops hiring, Bin's going to have a problem finding employment, seems to me.

Off the top of my head, things that piss off fundies about Catholicism:

1. The Pope (even though they're all in thrall to their "charismatic" leader of choice, e.g. Gothard)

2. Mary and the saints, which they consider idol worshipping (though Ben's hard-on for Protestant leaders is so intense he gave his sons horrible names in their honor)

3. The whole formal confession thing with priests as intermediaries to God (even though the Duggars' relationships with their children and how they confess all to them is even stranger and more intrusive)

4. Transubstantiation

5. Not taking every part of the Bible literally anymore, particularly regarding Genesis (the RCC is officially on board with evolution, for example) (though as we've all seen several times, fundies are quite inconsistent with which parts of the Bible they choose to take seriously)

6. (ETA) Infant baptism and the washing away of original sin (even though they believe that toddlers saying "I love you" are manipulative sinners and need to be beaten into submission)

Basically, it's a pissing contest over who loves the Bible more between groups who pick and choose the bits that consistent with their views.

As a lifelong Catholic these types of books make me crazy.  So many of them either don't understand Catholic theology or just misrepresent it.  I enjoy a good debate but both sides need to use accurate information to make their points and I am sure Ben and his favorite authors don't do that.  I would love to see him come up against a truly good Catholic apologist.  Maybe he would learn something but probably not.

In his online religion courses, Ben is just a college freshman.  Most freshmen aren't so arrogant, thinking that they already know everything.  But, Ben likes to pretend that he is already a preacher with a Doctor of Divinity degree.  I doubt that he is enrolled in a scholarly curriculum which requires the study of Greek and Hebrew.  I don't think he has the intellect for that.

The thing that puzzles me most (as a Catholic) about the Fundies is -- as Christians, how they ignore or disregard the DIRECT teachings of Jesus in favor of Old Testament teachings. As a follower of Christ, I was taught that He is the new Covenant. That the way to the Father is through Him.

The Fundies seem to like the Old Testament God better, though, He was meaner and punished people. Jesus just said, "Go, and sin no more." That's no fun.
