Pretty sure before it became such a big deal, the halftime show was local talent.    Atlanta does have a very vibrant music scene.   It would be like having the Super Bowl in Detroit and NOT having a Motown show.

Sort of, but not really. Grambling University's marching band has performed during halftime at 6 Super Bowls. When the game has been in New Orleans they have had a jazz themed halftime show a few times. Up With People has done a couple.

I find it bizarre and more than little weird and creepy that posters are bitching and whining about (insert musical act) being chosen to perform at the game as if that choice is somehow costing the poster some vast amount of money. Unless you are actually going to the game, which is a moronic choice all on it's own, there is ZERO cost to you. It's a free mini-concert, which NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO WATCH OR LISTEN TO.

Use that 25 minutes for something useful.

Go off to another room and fap or have sex.

Read a chapter in a book.

For one people can criticize about anything they want. For the other, the NFL is a cultural giant, whether we like it or not, and given the borderline overt racism of 32 old white men telling their largely African-American employees how they should live their lives, and selecting the whitest of the whitest bands to perform in a largely African-American city that does in fact have a wealth of musical talent, I think it's fair if some people want to hold the NFL accountable.

I haven't watched a halftime show since Prince, and the only other one I remember was Timberlake/Janet Jackson because of the controversy, and I didn't see it live, and I know Michael Jackson was the first 'big name' performer, and I won't be watching this one, but maybe if the NFL did start booking local acts with some cultural diversity then I might be more inclined to check it out.

It seems that sometimes the NFL books half time shows that are connected to the city and the venue and other times, they don't.  While I agree that the NFL ownership lacks diversity, so does the viewership in many instances.  Maroon 5 is a middle of the road act that isn't going to upset the middle class, middle aged viewership.  They're not going to rock the boat or create controversy and, undoubtedly, many of the older fans will also recognize a song or two of theirs, unlike more current acts.  The NFL's goal is not really to entertain, it is to be as inoffensive as possible to the broadest segment of their audience.  Presenting cutting edge acts significant to the local culture is just not in their ballpark and probably never will be.  I think you're also giving the city/venue more importance than most NFL fans do.  I think most people cannot name the locale of the last 5 Super Bowls, even those who are avid fans.

It's also important to remember that the only reason there is a big halftime show at all is because it is sponsored by Pepsi.  If Pepsi doesn't pay the big bucks, there is no show.  I would imagine that Pepsi has at least as much input into the choice of an act as the NFL does, and I don't think they are as interested in providing a showcase for local acts as they are with appealing across a broad spectrum of their consumer base.  Maroon 5 fits their commercial goals better than a local Atlanta-based hip hop act which doesn't have a broad audience.  I just don't think people watch the Super Bowl halftime show expecting to learn about the local music scene in the town where the game is being played.

Speaking of diversity, it appears that Cardi B will only perform her Maroon 5 duet if she is given her own solo set within the show.  It looks like the NFL will be forced to diversify whether it wants to or not.

They probably won't though.

The median viewer is a 50 y/o white dude, so I know they're motivated to cater to the demo especially since the massive clutching of pearls over Beyonce. You would think they would want to skew a little younger at some point though. It's just not a good look, especially being in Atlanta, and the NFL could actually move in that direction if they wanted to. Like that 50 y/o white dude is going to stop watching or more will watch based on the halftime show.

Damn, the Rams are going to have that division wrapped up by Halloween.

My fingers are crossed for this heh. I need more from them than one playoff appearance in several seasons, a terrible coach that time left behind years ago, and an "I don't want to talk about it move out west.". Yes they doubled their worth with the move, but I don't want them to become the Bengals. No offense to Bengals; I mean Bangles fans.

I don't honestly care what act is on during halftime. I'll watch whether I like them or not. I never could stand Beyawnce and I watched her do the same act she's been doing for 20+ years. Hell I'd even watch the reincarnate of Lawrence Welk and I'm far from a 50 y/o white dude. Well I'm not a white dude. All I care about is a well played game that isn't dictated by the officiating crew and musing about a few new commercials. jmho

Noooo! Not handsome Jimmy!

Buffalo big over the Vikings is the most inexplicable result in a long time.

That was a tough game to watch for Vikings fans. It was like they stopped playing and just watched Buffalo go to the end zone. At least Green Bay lost too. Thursday's game will be tough but I hope they go in with a "there's nothing to lose, go for it" attitude.

I like that Buffalo team. I hope they do well the rest of the season. And Cleveland, too.

Detroit beat the Patriots??

It's an upside down season!

I'm entertained by the fact that, for now, the Browns have a better record than the Patriots.

I wonder how far back we have to go to find the last time the Browns had a better record than the Patriots. Maybe as far back as to when Belichick coached the Browns? Nah, there are probably 1-0 vs. 0-1 starts a few times before then.

Just two days after the Minnesota Vikings told defensive lineman Everson Griffen that he would not be allowed at practice until he received a mental health evaluation, Griffen was transported to a mental health facility after he threatened to shoot someone at a hotel in Minneapolis and was acting erratically at home.

Paramedics were called to the home and Everson agreed to go to the hospital. However, on the way to the hospital, he “got up and jumped out of the ambulance because he was in fear that someone was going to shoot him.” The officers convinced him to get back in the ambulance and they escorted him to the hospital.

I can't believe Sam Shields is playing football again.  He's had at least 4 concussions that are known, and the last one he had with the Packers was in Week 1 of the 2016 season, and at the end of that season he was still having concussion symptoms.  The Packers' medical staff wouldn't clear him and strongly recommended that he not play football again.

What a difference two seasons (and more importantly, a better coach) has made for Goff. His accuracy in the first half was insane. Their defense needs to improve, but hopefully the Rams continue to kick ass this season. They are so much fun to watch.

I know!  I can't believe how much of a Rams fan I have become/continue to become.  I thought, "Great, we finally get not just one but two teams back in L.A. and I can't root for either of them," but I am truly enjoying the Rams.

Apparently defense is optional these days.

But honestly when you get a roughing the passer penalty for breathing too hard near the quarterback, you are going to give the QB tons of time to make those big plays.   High scoring games is going to keep people interested for only so long.

When George Steinbrenner was alive, I formulated a theory that if I know a lot about an owner, especially if the team is not in my city, he’s a bad owner and it’s a bad team.  Still holds true today.

Oh my god FUCK Jerry Jones. Why do the networks insist on showing his face when Dallas does anything?  The only other owner they do that for is Kraft, which is equally annoying.

I was watching the Packers game and they showed Dallas' game winning FG, and CBS insisted on putting Jerry Jones on my TV - why?  Why?

Of course, in Green Bay, they show the owners on every play, but that's only because they are the fans in the stands.

So let me get this straight:  Ryan Fitzpatrick is not the league MVP?  Color me surprised.

The Bills that I know showed up today. I don’t know who played against the Vikings last week.

That really is an effin’ mystery. Even if the Vikes really aren’t good the Bills looked good last week, right?

At one point midway through the third quarter, the Patriots had scored 31 points and the rest of the AFC East had scored none.

Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod please let there be a third tie this year.  Come on Texans do your business on D.

Also, hurry the hell up because you’re interfering with me watching the Giants game.

We had Cincy vs Atlanta 12 seconds left, 2nd and goal, Bengels down by 5, Andy at center, calls for the ball and-

Cut to commercial as CBSNY must switch to the Giants.

I love my Giants but come.on. We seriously couldn't see the end of the play? And of course Bengels scored the game winning TD which we learned about later.

Stupid Colts ruined everything.

On WTVH on Syracuse we got the full Pack/Bills game, THEN the end of Bengals/Falcons (which I will admit was exciting) and THEN the OT of Colts/Texans before they went to Giants/Saints.

Ahh how I long for the halcyon days of Giants leading 7-3.

Also, if NY is going to completely shit the bed again, some more, Drew Brees could make it worth my time to have benched Brady for Brees.

On the other hand, here in the Giant's second largest market we didn't get to see the game until midway through the second quarter.

Earl Thomas has to be pissed.   He held out all preseason in hopes of getting a better deal.   Didn't get one.   Wanted to be traded.   Didn't get it.   Got carted off today.   If he is seriously injured, he lost a lot.

And people wonder why Le'Veon Bell is holding out.   It's not the money, it's he doesn't want to be on the field as much as the Steelers wanted to use him without the money being worth it if he gets hurt.

If he went off the field in an air cast, I’m thinking that’s pretty dang serious.  Sorry Earl.

Dammit if we have to get bonus coverage of San Diego and San Francisco it would have been better to see Phillip Rivers leave as a loser.

I wish Earl Thomas and Tyler Eifert healthy recoveries.

I think that the refs made two bad calls in the Browns/Raiders game today that helped the Raiders win. The Browns were shaky at points in the game and Baker had some turnovers. But overall, I thought he played well and they should have won that game and Raiders should be 0-4. But they lost, and I think now we only have one winless team in the NFL.  Hopefully, the Browns will continue to grow/improve as a team and get some more wins.

Also, I'm glad that the Cowboys won today, Zeke came up very big for them this week, and their kicker did a nice job of helping them secure the win. We're now a quarter way through the season and I'm glad they didn't get another loss today. I was also happy to see Deshaun Watson and the Texans win.

It's interesting to see how things will shape up for teams as the season continues. We already have multiple teams that are 1-3 and who's chances don't look very good right now.

Poor Arizona.  All alone in the cellar.

Am I having flashbacks, or have the Steelers already been highlighted in several national games in only four weeks of the season?

And really haven’t played well.  While Ben has been pretty good, the defense is really bad.

Holy crap the Raiders won that game? I walked away when I figured the Browns had it in the bag and had no idea they reversed the first down call. Now I need to see what happened.

The NFL chews players up and spits them out. It always has, and it always will. The game is run by rich old men who want to entice young men with promises of riches, to risk their short term and long term health. There is no loyalty. And I say that as a big fan of the game.

Earl Thomas was never going to be given a better deal, because the Seahawks only see a 29 year old player, who has been in the league for eight years and has a mounting injury list. Just like Le'Veon Bell, a guy that the Steelers probably reckoned on getting another two good years out of, before he's run into the dirt.

On the football side of things, the Ravens also chewed up the Steelers tonight. That defense gave up 47 yards in the entire second half, and the offense actually looks like they can reliably score points.

The refs gift wrapped that game for the Raiders when they inexplicably changed the spot of the ball, but the refs had been bad all day in that game.  Hire them full time and train them properly.  It’s ridiculous to spend all this money on everything else and then let the game be controlled by part timers.

And get rid of reviewing anything except scoring plays and let them call the game.

What happened was that the refs reversed a call and took away a first down that would've allowed the Browns to run out the clock.  The replay looked inconclusive, at best, and no way the Raiders should've gotten the ball.  They then proceeded to tie the game and send it into overtime.  Had the call stood, the Browns could've run out the clock and gotten the victory.  There were a lot of questionable calls, most of them against the Browns.

This is my first week actually paying attention to MNF with the new crew so I’m not aware of too much scuttlebutt, but I have to say I would be fine with even more Booger.  As much Booger as possible is fine by me.  I don’t know if that’s a popular opinion or not, but I’m ok either way.

Jason Witten, eh.  It took me ten minutes to figure out he was the other guy was who was talking.
