Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

The Politics Policy is still in effect. A participants social media is NOT an invitation to discuss their political view points. Consider if discussion of certain social media posts will cause you to violate the politics policy BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

Wow, that is such INTERESTING information.  I HARDLY knew any of this about Moody Aviation.  And she is ASKING for one time donations.   CURIOUS to see how many they get.

She better hope for a lot.  I think we researched and it's going to be in the 6 figures for Timothy and that's just school.  That doesn't include housing/utilities/food/etc

So many contradictions in the bolded!!!

They want Timothy to learn and become more knowledgeable about the Word of God. Yet they only want him to read the KJV version of the bible. How does only reading the KJV version contribute to MORE knowledge?

Not only that, but Mommy and Daddy are going to fly to Spokane and pick a fundie, bible believing church for Timothy.

I was raised Catholic, 12 yrs of Catholic school, and I was thrilled to branch out and find my own (still Catholic) church. A mid -70's groovy, sit on pillows on the floor church!

Damn highlights!

Why do all of these people feel like it’s appropriate to beg for money from other people? Let’s be honest, that’s what it is. Raising funds for a family emergency, disaster, etc. is one thing, but for an expense they knew was coming? You’re asking for a handout, people, and the subtext is that because you’re so godly you deserve it. I wonder how much they give back to others. (Don’t get me started on GoFundMe for new cars, vacations, etc.)

I would send care packages to their poor hungry kids. But most likely their parents would eat it all.

I'm not sure he's taking class on-line or something. I read somewhere that his program that he wants isn't quite as established especially in WA area, but I forget.

I believe that they removed their academic campus in Spokane, so the first year of bible study is done online.

It was a hard one to make because we are well aware that Moody Bible Institute errs on the side of Calvinism and is not solid on the KJV Bible.

OY!!!! How can you be even MORE harsh than super-duper Calvinism??? "Sorry, Calvin, you weren't selective ENOUGH about the elect; we have our OWN ideas about who is really really worthy to go to heaven"??

And one of these days I hope someone in that circle sees the light wrt the KJV Bible and the faults in its translation.

It’s amazing to think that Tim Rod (T-Rod) is already ahead of the Duggars by taking the SAT, applying for and getting accepted into a program of higher learning, and having a specific plan for his future. AND planning to work full time to help pay for it!

So it seems as if the poor kiddo is going to have to pay his own way, on love offerings and his own hard work. I suppose grants and loans are out of the picture.  Although if he stayed local and applied for financial aid, with PapaRod’s income the kiddo would most likely have a LOT of aid.

Poor One of Thirteen. I don’t think he is escaping so much as moving from one crazy prison to another.  And they still have another year on the stink bus to make sure he is good and brainwashed while he takes his online Bible classes.  Resistance is futile.

I feel pretty sure grants and loans are out of the picture specifically because this, as you point out, involves filling out the FAFSA, and I'm pretty sure the Rods are against the evil gubmint knowing what kind of money he does, or more accurately doesn't, make.

I still have no idea what missionary aviation actually is , flying planes and throwing bibles at unsuspecting victims instead of dropping bombs on them ? And as always with these KJV purists , do they have any idea of the unbiblical lifestyle of the KJ in the V ? Maybe they think KJ is King Jesus

Maybe they hope to install a bunch of god-bothering pilots on commercial flights to give a boost to god-bothering passengers.

Appears the aim is to ensure that no one on the planet will ever be safe from god-bothering. ... .No matter where you are, they can come after you with leaflets.

A couple of questions for those who follow the Bateseses.  I really don't know too much about them other than what I read here.  Does their house have the dorm style rooms like the Duggars have?  I watched one of their older shows and it seemed the house was much warmer and more homey than the Duggar's home.  Do they do the whole team thing like the Duggars?  It seemed that the mother was much more involved and in control of things at their home.  It makes me wonder why the Duggars even ended up with the fame from TLC when the Bates are much more engaging and attractive.  They also do the down-home country thing well.  It's better overall that the Duggars ended up more famous because the Bates are able to make their brand of hate and control much more palatable.  Kinda scary when you think of it.  I do think they are much better parents than the Duggars by leaps and bounds and there seems to be real love in that family, not like the robotic Duggars.  I admit I only watched a couple of episodes, but that was my take.  I did find some of the boys to be jerky and OMG Erin's hair.  What is up with that???  Her sisters didn't seem to go so overboard with the 1800's Nellie Olsen look.

Gil and Kelly are definitely more loving and hands-on than Boob and Michelle, but they still had the older kids doing the lion's share of the work. The one big difference I notice between the families is I don't think the boys were permitted to be lazy like the Duggar sons were. The older ones worked in Gil's tree business and Lawson had a landscaping service and helped support the family with what he earned.

Lol, as far as Erin's hair, it's actually way more toned down than it used to be. She was practically in Gibson girl territory in the early days.

In any case, hurrah for Timothy for escaping to both the other coast and, ultimately, the sky.

It's too soon to tell if Timothy will actually escape since he's doing his first year of college online. On the one hand, these poor, grifting fundies have lowered my expectations to the point that I'm pretty sure this will either be ignored this time next year, or we'll be invited to donate to Timothy's gofundme so-i-can-go-to-a-fake-god-school-and-get-away-from-these-crazy-people. On the other hand, I'm impressed that he took the SATs, thought about what he wanted to do with his life, and applied to a college that would help him reach his goal, so I'm hoping he'll actually succeed.

As for a stricter Christian outlook than Calvinism, the last church I went to believed if you died while in a sinful state you went to hell, even if you had been Born-Again. Your only hope of heaven was to be as Christ-like a possible every single second of your life and to make damn sure you asked forgiveness before going to sleep & hope that you either died in your sleep or had enough notice to pray for forgiveness beforehand.

Don't forget, they have to vet his second-year church (and are already making plans to do so!).  It's not like he can just show up at the door of another IFB venue, be an extra-acute listener for apostasy the first couple of times, and consider himself good.  Nope.  You'd think that would be enough for most Christians with a shred of logic or true faith.  Mommy and Daddums have to show up and vet the place.

For someone who wants to study theology and try to convert people, one would think learning about and having exposure to other religions would be helpful.  How can you tell someone where their religion is wrong, if you don't understand their beliefs? Secluding oneself and refusing to learn about the differences in the world is exactly the opposite of what education is all about.  These people just make me furious. I really want one of their kids to challenge their belief system and see what happens.  Of course, I'm pretty sure they would disown the kid, cry about it and then grift more money to help get them through this "difficult time."

Our church supports a missionary aviation firm that flies twice a week out of southern Florida. They take supplies to Caribbean countries each week and also ferry missionaries back and forth out of these countries. This work is not for the faint of heart. They fly old airplanes, some from WW11. They work for almost no pay and at times fly in supplies on damaged runways after natural disasters like Haitian earthquake and many hurricanes. It’s a very noble ministry.

I see what you’re saying. I do think without “fame & fortune” josh’s Rep would’ve made it harder to find him a wife even in fundy circles. My comment about Jill is rooted in without money/fame they would’ve HAD to have some kidults earning an income to keep the fridge stocked. Jana still probably would’ve been the mom substitute but the other Jslaves would’ve had to earn an income to keep the family afloat (like Lawson Bates supported his family).

How would Josh have had a reputation without his fame making the molestation public? I think they put quite a bit of spin on it when they told Anna and her family. Fundies like nothing better than a redemption story, and I'm sure they all thought having Anna available for sweet fellowship would ensure that Josh would never molest again. (And hopefully, he never has molested again. His porn and eventual cheating habits hopefully curbed that urge.)

They are so very, very ignorant. Even if you are a bible literalist, it is nonsense to hold the KJV up on a pedestal. Their big argument about why it's the only true translation is that it includes certain verses that have more tacked onto them than newer translations. Well, the reason for this is that the tacked on parts were added much later by different scribes, and not present in the oldest manuscripts, which is why modern translators don't include them. But this type of thinking is far beyond them. Their pastor pounds the pulpit and says the new liberal bible translators are taking things out of the bible, and the case is closed.

Baptists by definition do not agree with Calvinism. That whole debate honestly makes me feel sick these days -- I am so glad to be out of the fundy world, and to not have set foot in a church in 15 years. It's such a waste of time. People in my old church would have debates and be brought to tears over minute theological issues, but no one ever seemed to shed a tear over the millions of people throughout the world who lack clean water, food, and medical care.

I don't think everyone knew, but some church members did. But no matter what, they would have told any woman he wanted to court, since they told Anna and her parents who did not previously know. So you think that they only accepted because of TV fame? Interesting, but I think I disagree. Like I said, they love a redemption story -- even though his was fake. I forgot who it is that's been discussed here who is marrying a rapist. He's not TV famous, but because he says he became saved afterward and has been forgiven, all is supposedly well.

As far as Tabitha Payne-my thinking is that yes she married a rapist, but she was “over the hill” in her early 30s and the rapist was 40ish?(I think). No way would her parents have thought that was a possibility for her at 20. At her prime “Market age”. Josh wouldn’t have stuck around long enough to snap up the “left overs” of potential courting partners. (I’m gagging typing this).

Given the fact that Anna's parents allowed Priscilla to marry TFDW, I don't think they were too picky with the choice of Anna's husband.  Josh is the right kind of Christian and he repented.   It's not like they have a huge pool of possible husbands available.

Fundamental Christians put repentance on a high shelf because that is the basis for their entry into to heaven. Once you repent, you're forgiven and it's over as if it never happened. People who have been sexually active can even receive their virginity back by repenting and being forgiven. Josh asked forgiveness in front of his church/church elders and as far as their circle knew, never committed that sin again, so it was as if it didn't count. Plus, the whitewashed version they shared is that he was curious and touched the girls over their clothing while they were asleep*. If he hadn't been convicted by the Lord to confess this sin to his parents, nobody would have known. His "honesty" makes his repentance even stronger because he could have hidden his evil in his heart.

*Because of the released police reports, we know that his actions were much worse and more than once. I very much doubt that JB shared everything with the church leaders, let alone the Kellers.

He pledged to Anna's dad that he, David, would be accountable to Priscilla for his internet use. Why would Anna's parents not be thrilled?

Apparently Bin is Calvinist, yes, and his family belongs to a branch of Baptist called Reformed Baptist. Independent fundamental Baptists like the Duggars are not Calvinists, and reportedly this is causing a rift between Bin and Boob. Also, Boob is furious that Bin supports Black Lives Matter -- I give the guy a lot of credit for supporting it.

So across my IG feed today during my morning coffee was a post by Elijah - the kid from Hawaii that runs Boob's landscaping service, does the grilling for the family and was tied up on a crane to fix Grandma's roof.  His grandfather passed away today.  Now while there has been a lot of outpouring from folks, not a single Duggar/Seewald/Dillard/Forsyth/Vuolo has posted any comment.  It just reminds me that these folks seem to be all about themselves and don't seem to show much compassion or support to anyone else.
