Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

Message added by Scarlett45

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

Message added by CM-CrispMtAir,

While we understand the frustration (change is never easy), please keep in mind that not everyone feels the same way and that for those members who don't, the ongoing conversation about other forums and chat options can equally be a cause of frustration.

Out of respect for your fellow posters, we kindly ask that you continue any discussion about alternatives via PM or the Technically Speaking: Bugs, Questions, & Suggestions area.

Do you remember the morning a few weeks back, when I asked for thoughts/prayers/vibes/luck because I was taking the LSAT?

Today is score release day and I got a 170!!!! So delighted. 🤩🥳

So, thank you. Those thoughts/prayers/vibes/luck worked. 🥰

I take the first big/terrifying section of the CPA exam on Tuesday morning -- please send all that my way again, if you can spare the time! Because why mess with a good thing, right? 😁

And yes, I am too excited to speak properly, so you will have to decipher way too many emojis. Maybe once I'm credentialed, I'll straighten up 🤭

Whoop whoop!  Congrats to you and good luck on the next exam!

Re Falwell:  guh.  To be born of the golden goose and to be so genuinely stupid.  What a sleaze bag.

i mean, I’m a sleaze bag too, don’t get me wrong.  But I’m not famous.  JJr was BORN to be straight laced, (alcohol) grain free, self righteous, egotistical, pompous, financially able to rent a yacht for vacation without breaking a sweat, live like a king.  He could be running the circuit among evangelicals all over the country, ghost writing, sipping brown water and cleaning his own damn pool.  He didn’t have to “DOOOO” anything.  But noooooooo.  If he didn’t choose that life, FINE!  I bet there was enough money in the pot he could take his happy self right on out to FL or LA or the French Riviera.  Go!   Have a big time!  But you can’t do BOTH, stooooopid.  (I read a book recently where the son was taken with speaking like an Englishman and so pronounced stupid “stew-pid”.  I love English pronunciations as well but don’t think you can improve on the red neck “STOOOOOOOPid”).  The POINT, Rev JJr is you can’t live like Charlie Sheen and look like Billy Graham.  You just can’t pull it off.  You have to BE a squeaky clean evangelical President of a college where males and females sit on opposite sides of worship centers and don’t interact, or you have to Rambo out the door and be whatever trips your trigger.  Nobody really CARES about THAT.  You just can’t do BOTH.  The lack of general understanding of the tolerance levels of ones own personal public audience blows my mind.
Ladies and Gentlemen:  I give you JIMMY SWAGGART.
there are so many fun examples right here - but I’ll stop.  There are those people (Lookey mentioned Tiger) who somehow fly under the radar for a long time.  (I adored Tiger, and was destroyed when he toppled over like Saddams statue...).   That’s how it goes:  the crash is usually public, in spectacular and memorable fashion.

ETA:  @rue721 you ROCK!!

@iwantcookies fingers crossed, I’m glad you were able to get a scan so quickly but Mama (me) was RIGHT about agonizing through the weekend.  Go outside.  Go do something.  Do t sit there and stew. ❤️

@lookeyloo how is our sweet son and how are you?

@Jynnan tonnix Any talk of blowing that popsickle stand today?  I was betting they wouldn’t keep you the weekend.  (I got my MD from Liberty online.  I now pronounce you HEALED!)

You are a SUPER STAR!!!!!reese witherspoon yes GIF

Did you save cash for your tuition or will you be taking loans? You should be able to get great scholarship money with your score. Law School debt is the biggest regret of my life, so any way you can reduce or eliminate it I would recommend (I graduated from University of Chicago Law School at the height of the crash).

😁 Thank you! It was my goal score, but I didn't do as much studying as I wanted and choked a little on the analytical reasoning section, so I didn't really think I'd get it. Feeling sooooo good today!

I'm hoping for good scholarship money. I'm willing to go down a bit in the rankings to get it, and I've had some success negotiating with schools before. So fingers are crossed! I also don't know how Covid will affect things...on the one hand, schools are broker, but on the other hand, fewer people may be applying and trying to matriculate right away.

Anything I can't get the school to pay for, I'm going to try to get work to pay for 😅 I'll take out loans for the remainder, and/or cash-flow what I can. I am definitely money-conscious about it, because Big Law is probably not an option, so I'm assuming I won't make much more coming out than I will going in. Also trying to decide if I want to go part-time for some or all of it.

University of Chicago is a fantastic school! And WOW, I'm sure that program was really demanding. Do you feel like the name or network or education/rigor helped you a lot, or would you rather have gone to a lower-ranked school if it meant saving money on tuition?

Honestly- knowing what I know now I would’ve gone to DePaul or John Marshall on a full scholarship. My Mom paid for my undergrad so I would’ve had NO LOANS at all if I had done that. I hate these fucking loans. Hate them. I didn’t find full time work until 18months after graduation, then I was temping and under employed for a while- interest, interest, interest.

U of C didn’t know what they were doing post crash and I was actually told to go WORK FOR FREE (can you believe???- how was I supposed to live???) they have better loan forgiveness programs now but we were the Guinea pigs.

So if you get a full scholarship I would take it.

Since we've got a few medical professionals and people very familiar with the medical system in here, I have a question for the group. I'm trying to help out my neighbor--she is going in for a colonoscopy in two weeks and with Covid, she has to be dropped off at the door and then picked up after, no one can go in with her. She doesn't have any family in town and the center won't allow patients to use Uber/Lyft/a cab, so she wants to find a day nurse to drive her there, pick up her, and stay with her for a few hours after, just in case. She is refusing my help, even though I've tried to convince her it's no big deal for me (she is very independent and hates asking for help and she's made it clear that she won't accept my offer to help). Has anyone ever hired a day nurse or an assistant to help for a day or so? I've been trying to look online for a service she could use, but I really don't know what to look for.

I haven't personally but a single friend in Baton Rouge did it several times.  Her doctor's office helped her - apparently she wasn't the only one in that situation.  If not the colonoscopy doctor, maybe her primary care doctor.

Usually the clinic/nurse/etc. will ask if you have a safe place to go, a ride, or someone to assist you.  If not, the clinic or hospital will normalize have a social worker to assist with such matters.  You can check sites like Care.com under either seniors or special needs.

I’ve taken my mom for colonoscopies before.  Aside from being a little loopy for a few hours she was fine.  Maybe your neighbor would be okay with you driving to and from and just popping in every two or three hours after she returns home.  She’ll be probably sleep most of the time anyway.

There was a service we used in Ann Arbor for my mother’s routine medical appointments that did just that. Call the patient advocacy at your local hospital or google “patient escorting services” (be careful with the order of those three words...just saying).

Thanks, all! My neighbor is great, but she's fiercely independent and doesn't like to ask for help for anything, ever. Plus, her doctor's office doesn't seem to be much help (which surprised me, you'd think colonoscopy practices would be used to patients who need help with transport). I think we've found a car service that has unmarked cars (she's worried the center won't let her get in a car that has a logo on it) and the driver routinely does drop off and pick up of people from medical appointments. I'm going to make it clear that I will be stopping by a few times that day no matter what she says and if anything goes wrong with the car service, she needs to call me.

Would she be willing to give the nurses station your phone number in case they figure out her ride is just a driver?

I'm going to suggest that, but we'll see. She's one of those older ladies who never married and is used to doing everything by herself her whole life and I think it's hard for her to admit she might need help with certain things. I'm similar in a lot of ways, so I understand. And this is actually helping me in the event that I have to have anything done and don't want to bother friends or family, lol.

Yes there was. They were in a triad, meaning they were all in a romantic relationship with each other.

Truthfully I don’t think emotionally many can let go of the notion that women are supposed to be sexually monogamous. Also many are uncomfortable with male bisexuality, so a triad of one woman and two men makes many uncomfortable although intellectually they aren’t offended by it.

I am not sure why I felt uncomfortable.  It wasn't because I  disagreed with what they were doing ..their life their business.. it, to me, felt unnatural.  I do not mean in the moral sense more like they felt that they should live this way but in their heart of hearts they did not want to. Something just felt off..and the ending where they all three climbed into bed together just made me uncomfortable,  but I will admit they may be because I am a bit of a prude.

I am not sure why this did not post earlier.

I have no one to pick me up from colonoscopies in the past and the clinic/Dr. was no help. I had to figure something out on my own. I finally ask a friend if her mother could pick me up. I used Uber to drop me off.

I worked in radiology for 31 years.  At our hospital, every x-ray and scan and ultrasound performed before 5 pm was read out by the radiologist that day.  The results are available to the ordering doctor almost immediately.  It just takes time for the doctor to make the call to the patient with results.

To be fair when I had results in less than two hours, people were seeing something they'd never seen before.  The radiologist called my GP's office along with transmitting the results.  The PA immediately went to the GP.  Together they called my specialist who wanted to see me ASAP.  Before that appointment, there was a lunch time gathering of radiologists and doctors in the specialty.  In fairness none of them had seen that particular problem before and many or most of them won't see it again in their lifetimes.  It's quite rare.  It was both alarming and comforting that so many people were involved in trying to figure it out.

My friend in California had to call someone to drive her to and fro for cataract surgery. $125/hr...5 hr minimum. I hope your neighbor sees fit to just allow you to do a good deed. Perhaps if you phrase it that way she won’t think she is taking advantage of you or whatever her hang up is with allowing you to help. Wishing her the best.

Hi everyone.  I don’t usually post in here but I am wondering if anyone knows what happened to @Sew Sumi?  She has not been active for a couple of weeks and that is quite unusual for her.  I have “known” her from TWOP, Free Jinger, and even going way back to when TLC had a fan forum for 16/18/19 Kids and Counting.  I just want to know if she is ok.

Sorry this is so long.

My grandson's school situation has gone from good, to bad, to really bad, to worse, and hopefully is on its way back to good. He was supposed to transfer from his school to my granddaughter's special needs school because of his newly diagnosed epilepsy and severe learning delays. Instead the school district voided his IEP and transferred him to a totally different school with no accommodations at all.

Their first bs excuse was the IEP wasn't valid b/c it was from a different state. My daughter reminded them they had to legally follow it until they wrote him a new one. The next excuse was they didn't have a nurse trained to respond to epilepsy. So he had to do school online and he could work with an online special ed teacher for one hour, once a week.

Unfortunately, the first day after two classes on Zoom he had a seizure. His neurologist faxed a letter to the school district stating that grandson could not attend online classes. Their response was to tell my daughter she had to come to the school on Monday and pick up his work then take it back by 2 pm on Friday. My daughter told them this would not work and suggested they either hire a part-time nurse or have a teacher come to the house. They told her the school district could not afford to do either and this was how it was going to be.

After she called me in tears for the third time in a week, I found the phone number for the State's special education director and she called him. After explaining everything, the director said he would take care of it. She told me that a half hour after she hung up with him, the school district superintendent called to let her know a teacher from the next town over would be coming to teach in-home lessons and when schools opened for everyone he'll go to that school. She is both a special education teacher and a nurse, she lives in the same town, and she will drive my grandson to school and back. At the new school she will be his primary teacher.

This doesn't start for another week and I'm really hoping that she and my grandson hit if off. When he lived with me for pre-k and kindergarten I had him enrolled in a small private school where everyone loved him. But for the last two years he's gone to 5 different schools and he's now the weird kid that gets bullied and teased. He needs to have some success or he's just going to give up.

@Nysha I have been retired from special education for years,  but the law used to be, that it was illegal for a school district to use the excuse that it was too expensive to provide the services detailed in the IEP. You did the right thing to go all the way to the top, and I hope your grandson gets all the services he needs and has a wonderful school year.  Sometimes the old saying, " The squeaky wheel gets the grease" holds true in special education.  As the parent of a daughter with learning disabilities and as a special education teacher,  I experienced this first hand. School districts( or at least some) will try giving parents under the sun  to get out of providing services.

How are cysts removed? Surgery right? The worst is not knowing.

I think it depends. If it’s obviously a cyst and not causing any trouble, they might just wait and see. I have a couple of ovarian cysts that so far are behaving themselves. (Once again, apologies for the TMI.)

I had two large breast cysts removed surgically, outpatient. My abdominal and uterine aliens were surgery, but endoscopic, so pretty fast recovery time. But it’s been six years since my last experience and techniques and procedures are improving all the time.

I know it’s hard not to, but please try not to assume the worst. Distraction is your friend. Also ice cream. And naps.  Hang in there, okay?

Positive Sunday news:

I am happy that I got a place to sleep and food to eat!

No rain for at least a week. And no rain in the upcoming week either.
