Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

Message added by Scarlett45

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

While we understand the frustration (change is never easy), please keep in mind that not everyone feels the same way and that for those members who don't, the ongoing conversation about other forums and chat options can equally be a cause of frustration.

Out of respect for your fellow posters, we kindly ask that you continue any discussion about alternatives via PM or the Technically Speaking: Bugs, Questions, & Suggestions area.

Yes, maybe, those who want to follow guidelines stick to certain stores and those who don't go to others.  Not sure how that might apply to the employees though. Hard to imagine any employee would choose to work in a place without masks on the customers.  Maybe, those stores need to be self-check out only.

What are the employees to do quite and maybe not fi d another job? I am 63 and do not have a car. At the moment I live within walking distance from my job. Who is going to hire me?

what a family tree! Jeez

And Jeff Lundgren had another son, Damon, who participated in the murders and is serving a life sentence.  Lundgren himself, who had a history of stealing from his employers and expecting his fellow church members to support him, died by lethal injection years ago.

The Mormon temple in Kirtland is actually quite interesting and has some historical significance.  It is where Joseph Smith and his group first settled after leaving New York State.  They were run out of town by the local 'Christian' citizenry and headed west from there.

Another sort of ironic fact is that the barn where the murders occurred borders on a local park with the name Penitentiary Glen.

Exactly.  Most people working at the Dollar Store have limited prospects for employment, especially these days.  Many need to take public transportation or walk to work, have limited education and training, don't have a lot of work experience.  If someone quits the Dollar Store because the customers don't have to wear masks, it is unlikely they're going to be able to find something better.

To all of you who responded to my post about getting custody of my niece, I can't thank you enough. I had to wait to reply because it moved me to tears. This is why I love this place. Wonderful, loving people are always here to listen and support you. Like I told one of the people who will be providing services to my niece, we feel like we have been out in the wilderness crying into the wind with no one hearing. I think I have talked about the problems with her mother before and got quite a lot of support, but the abuse I finally was told about was so horrific that I could not put my feelings into words. I had no idea if we could get her out and I was just too scared to articulate it. Even now, I'm afraid to assume it will end well, for fear of jinxing it. I will try, though, because she needs me to.

Again, I am so grateful to have this place and I will be  better about being a functioning part of the community. I hope we all stay well during this horrible time and I send all the love and good wishes anyone could ever be capable of. I feel enveloped in a giant virtual hug and I am sending it right back. I will be here watching over you from afar. Much Love, Janet

Janet- your great niece is lucky to have you. I’m sorry for all she has been through, and the fight you’ve been through to keep her safe. We are all here for you.

That is so unfair! It boggles my mind how the #reopen people keep repeating, “if you’re so scared, stay home!” without thinking of the employees who will be forced to serve them if things open back up. I wish these loud complainers could staff all the businesses until things return to normal!

The laugh was for the lingerie. I know how you feel about buying clothes right now. I usually wash something before wearing it, but only if I’ve tried it on and know it won’t shrink too much. I’m not comfortable trying anything on. This means before my jeans get tighter I have to think about scaling back on my eating!

Exactly! I just feel like they’ll have to close the dressing room. People touch clothing with their faces, and there’s no way it can be sanitized besides washing. Then, someone will get the virus, and blame the store for not doing everything they could to sanitize the place. It’s a lawsuit waiting to happen!

I know! How will I ever buy another pair of pants?  I'm difficult to fit with pants.  My waist is much smaller than my hips, so, I may try on a dozen pair just to find one that's right.  Without trying them on!  lol  It's crazy to consider.  And shoes!

Can someone give me some tips on doing a video for a friends wedding? It was postponed due to covid, but apparently, we may attend virtually. I received an email requesting that I send a video to the couple to be revealed to them...at the ceremony or reception I guess. It’s a surprise. I wasn’t able to find an example. Do I dress up in the dress I was going to wear? It’s just a little awkward, as I have never met the groom. The instruction said to make it personal.

I would dress up, and tell them how glad you are that they have found their person (or whatever works best)and how sorry you are that you couldn’t attend but you can’t wait until there can be gatherings again.

Same with the stores here.  I buy a fair amount of clothing online and a couple of the places have notice on their website that anything that is returned is not put back into circulation immediately but undergoes a sanitizing process that varies based on the product before it is put back in stock.

My local Target isn't taking returns right now but the person doing customer service told me that is temporary and, once they do start accepting returns, they will extend the usual 30 day limit to accommodate returns of stuff bought during the moratorium.

I think you definitely dress up and look like you're attending a wedding.  If you don't know the groom, tell them how much you are looking forward to meeting him and getting to know him.  Make a small toast, refer to your relationship with the bride and why it is special.  I don't think it needs to be anything long and drawn out.  A couple of sentences wishing them happiness is plenty,

Sarah Mally had her guests make videos; you could check those for inspiration! 😉😂

Seriously though just say you're happy for your friend. Maybe tell a story (not too embarrassing since you don't know who's watching.) I would say that you've know that this friend has good judgment/is a good judge of character/ has good taste in men, etc. and you're sure that the person she chose is special/is the right person to spend her life with, etc. Then wish them many years of happiness.

And just like that, my granddaughter Elizabeth is done with high school forever (her last day was today.) At least she got her Senior pictures done before the pandemic.

Also, their Prom was officially cancelled, even though they took a vote and asked if the kids would guarantee payment if they did it later.

Everyone agreed to pre-pay and they still cancelled it.

On top of all of this, she broke up with her longtime boyfriend. He was a nice kid, but tbh, the rest of the family are glad they broke up. But still, poor kid.

(she's way too good for him, in our eyes, natch😁)

Just a suggestion for anyone wanting jeans with tricky bodies - Dillards has a brand called Westbound.  They come in tall and petite plus regular.  https://www.dillards.com/brand/Westbound/women-pants

I only wear the pull on variety - not your typical elastic waist - flat front and with a shirt on look like regular jeans.  These are very forgiving but not sloppy.  I wear a petite but also have a smaller waist that is tricky to fit.  I have jeans, capris, and shorts.  These are fab.

I don’t think I’ll ever wear non-stretch waisted pants again!

This is how I totally know I have gone old lady:  I found some very nice knit pants with elastic at JJill years ago and I have half a dozen pairs in various shades.  I also have maybe half a dozen pairs of traditional dress pants with zippers and buttons.  Every morning, I go to the closet and decide what to wear and 4 days out of 5, I pick a pair with the elastic.  It's like wearing yoga pants or pajama bottoms all day, but I can wear a nice blouse, even put on a sweater or blazer if I have to go to a meeting with the bosses and nobody knows the difference.  I now have two pairs of elastic waist jeans.

You kids don't know what you're missing if you haven't tried it.

PS: I do occasionally wear a skirt or dress, but only in the summer and not too often because I do a lot of moving around sitting, squatting, etc in the course of the day and a skirt sometimes isn't practical.  During the current crisis, my employer has actually relaxed the dress code for docs seeing patients to 'business casual' and specifically told us to only wear stuff that can be laundered and not dry cleaned.  They specifically asked male staffers NOT to wear ties.   If you know anything about big time corporate medicine, this is seismic.  They still have a dress code at the Main Campus that says no one, not men, not women, can go sockless and that anyone wearing something that doesn't cover their entire leg (ie a skirt) has to wear hose that cover their legs.  Luckily, I don't work at the big house so no one checks to see if I am wearing pantyhose.

So we have something exciting happening in Houston. The Blue Angels will be doing a flyover and part of their route is about a tenth of a mile from my apartment,so they will be right over me. I have always wanted to see them and never thought I would be able to. So I am happy.

I have a pair of jeans by The Limited that I got from Belk.  I just looked and those jeans are under $11.00!  I may have to order some summer jeans, since, I know I can use that brand.  They have stretch and are very forgiving.

https://www.belk.com/shop-by-brand/belk-exclusives/the-limited/womens-clothing/jeans/

I used to shop at Belk all the time when we were stationed in Georgia. Some of those jeans look as though they might work, but, I really prefer pull-on styles.

It's so annoying...I have a really prominent low-belly pooch which I always just put down to an apple shape and gravity, but came to find out, shortly before I had surgery to remove a bit of my colon which had a cancerous polyp on it last Fall, that it was actually due to a hernia. They put everything back where it belonged when I had the surgery, but since it wasn't hernia surgery, per se, there was nothing done to really prevent it from popping right out again. Which it has done. For a few months, there, I could actually wear tops which didn't need to be tunic length to cover that bulge, and I could wear pants which I had to button over it, but no more. Now I'm back to looking as though I'm about to give birth to a long-"dropped" cantaloupe unless I wear some sort of swing style tunic top. And I actually still weigh about 20 pounds less than I did a few years ago, but can't wear any of the clothes I did then. Hopefully I can get the hernia properly fixed one of these days.

I really prefer pants with a tab and a button if I am leaving the house. I do like all my pants to have at least 1% Lycra/spandex in them for comfort, but I only wear pull on styles lounging at home or overnight flights.

I don’t need more encouragement to eat, and that button is a great satiety signal. I’m always someone that weighs the least after a long winter, because I’m wearing so many clothes and I’m bundled in layers I think I eat less. I always way the most in the fall after a summer of socializing and dresses/skirts. I have heard most people are the opposite (losing weight in summer because they are more active).

Has anyone else noticed a change in their TV viewing habits since all this started?

I don't feel like watching anything I used to like watching. Usually I watched snarkable things like the Duggars, 90 day Finance, Married At First Sight, etc.

The trashier/weirder people and families, the better.

I also liked watching The View, Late Night programs and anything to do with news or politics.  Now? No way..can't stand any of them. (I do watch local virus updates.)

I have no interest in any other TV anymore.  Just me?

@ChiCricket, everything seems different since lockdown. I absolutely cannot watch the news or political programs I might have checked into before; have no ability to concentrate enough to read a novel or watch a long movie; started several Netflix and Prime series I just can’t seem to finish; spending a lot of time on social media, but nothing controversial or political (like this forum!). I have loved the musicals put on youTube by Andrew Lloyd Webber and even got lost in Tic Toc videos for awhile.  Everything feels different.

My main programs lately are Deadline White House with Nicolle Wallace and Andrew Cuomo’s daily briefings. That is enough news. I am liking the at home Versions of the late night shows. Before the corona crisis we had stopped watching them.  I like my lottery dream home. No current events.

I'm overloaded on junk tv, like TLC reality shows like Sister Wives, 90 Day Fiance, etc.  I've even checked out some Bravo shows that I had vowed to leave before the virus hit. But, my biggest change is now I'm watching stuff on Netflix and Amazon. Just started Orange is the New Black, Ozark, and Autopsy: The Final Days of various famous people.  lol  I've even caught a few episodes of my all time favorite show Breaking Bad.  If anyone wants some laughs, check it out.  It's a drama, but, man, parts of it STILL make me lol on many occasions. I think the tv is a form of escapism for me. I'm also watching a lot more music videos, as I find they inspire me.  And, I do need solace and inspiration.  THIS video gave me so much HOPE.  Tears pour every time I watch it.  James is from NC, so, he's special in my heart.

Has anyone used WebEX, before?
