I guess that FJ quote must be pretty well known to everyone but me. When it said “tear” I was thinking a water landmark, so I said Victoria Falls. I’m going to go stand in the corner.

That game sure had a shaky start. The new champ is a little extra. I hope he calms down.

I had to think about it for a second, but the name of the poet led me to India, which led me to the Taj Mahal.

The beginning of this game had me worried that we wouldn't have any players for FJ!

Dan needs to stop leaning (and pounding!) on the podium.

Me too with Victoria Falls.

New champ is a bit shouty.

That would’ve been hilarious! What would they even do in that case?! (I know it could never happen...just a funny concept.)

God that lady was annoying.  "I will take (full name of category) for eight hundred dollars, please, alex, thank you..."  Jesus, spit it out.  Glad she lost

Did not know final jeopardy.  I said the London Eye, even though that didn't really make sense.

I did get Lafayette

I don't know how people end up on the show still doing that. They start drilling it into your head all the way from the audition how to call categories quickly and efficiently.

I was semi-spoiled for FJ. There's a Jeopardy Blind Guesser account on Twitter that invites people to guess the FJ answer based only on the category. I saw someone's guess of Taj Mahal which planted the idea in my head, and when I saw the clue I just thought "of course."

From https://www.jeopardy.com/jbuzz/behind-scenes/breaking-down-four-rare-jeopardy-scenarios

Quote

“In the event all three contestants have $0 (zero) or minus amounts at the end of ‘Double Jeopardy!’, no Final Jeopardy! round would be played.”

This is one rule that has not yet been put to the test and we’re betting that EP Harry Friedman might make the decision to play the final clue for fans at home to enjoy.

The next day would have three new players, as happens when everyone is at $0 after Final Jeopardy (also on the link above).

Since you've been on the show can I ask a question?  On another board, I was told that there are people on the show that will help you figure out what you should wager in FJ?  I said I didn't think so because that's part of the game, but they were pretty adamant (without having been on the show), and I'm just really curious if it's true.

After the '50s game show scandals (and subsequent government oversight) there is zero percent chance that the show would provide help of any sort.  If I'm ever proved wrong, I'll happily buy dinner!

Count me in with Browncoat who got to FJ through thinking that the poet must be Indian. I haven't read much Indian poetry since a high school World Lit class overdid Santha Rama Rau so I didn't know the poet mentioned in the clue but it seemed like my thoughts were right.

Gutsy bet by the new champ who didn't bother me as he apparently did others.  I just thought he was excited to be there.

I never heard of it, but like others here, the poet being Indian certainly helped steer me toward the Taj Mahal. Also, the tear would be a sad thing, and so the Taj Mahal being built for the emperor's dead wife fit the clue.

I did not get any TSs. Instead of Norway, I said Sweden for the country where that massacre took place. I have '22 July' on my long list of shows/movies to stream.

Can someone explain the Baby -- Sharp -- Doo Doo Doo Doo category names?

Absolutely not. No help on wagering. As @j5cochran said, they give you writing implement and paper to do the calculations and set you loose. I wish they’d given us a pencil - in my case they gave us sharpies and it just made it hard for me to make legible calculations and re-check them.

Today’s FJ was instant for me based on the name (never heard the quote), but when I told my husband to guess what nationality the name was and choose the most famous landmark there, he couldn’t figure it out, so.

A 2nd teen tournament???? NOOOO!!!! At least the oldest MiniToothbrush will enjoy.

The only TS I got were the Frenchie ones: Lafayette (Terri's DD) and Marquette & Joliet. FJ took a few seconds to work out. I don't mind Dan; he just seems excited & I loved his gutsy FJ wager.

Somebody got a GFY (Terri maybe?) 🍹

If you're giving all the contestants equal help, and that help is part of the rules, I don't think that would be a problem.  It just never made any sense to me, no matter how much the other person kept arguing about it.  Because wagering is part of the game.

I got FJ but only because it was made into a movie (twice, I think).   The clue with the word "grave" was a good hint.

I've seen a number of performances - movie and theater (community and high school - can't afford the big time), and I got it because of the grave, but I didn't recognize the line.

I've never heard Quebec City referred to as just "Quebec" (I'm from Montreal - maybe it's an out of province thing?) Always thought of it as similar to NYC and New York state.

Decent games this last week, but I still miss James (and I know he annoyed people, but I was surprised to see him included on the PrimeTimer Awards for Worst Reality TV Personalities, alongside some genuine assholes).

He was also listed in the favorite reality person (or one of those categories - there are so many of them I got confused). So something for everyone. 🙂

I'm far behind (since I've missed every other game on tv because I live in Warriors-land), so apologies for dredging up something from pages ago.

Anyway, the contestant coordinators will tell you things like "the clue is going to be looking for a person" so you know to write Who is, and they will also tell you things like "be as specific in your answer as possible" situationally. I don't think they will say that you need to put a first and last name because it could give it away, but they will tell you to be complete. I feel like this came up in one of the games before mine but I no longer remember exactly how they worded it.

We've been gaming the DVR, with mixed results. We've seen single Jeopardy w/o the end, and double Jeopardy w/o the beginning. Last night we got it just right. Guess we found our Goldilocks setting.

The only TS I got was Mike Myers. When I saw Bohemian Rhapsody I was pleased and surprised to see him in it, but he was almost unrecognizable.

If I hadn't known it was Myers before I saw the movie, I never would have recognized him.

I did not recognize the quote at all, but after staring at the poet's name for awhile, and connecting "tear" to grief, I managed to get it right, though I was not at all confident of it.

Hearing it once is not the problem.

Its over and over again, day after day.

But like I said, I don't hate it as much as other kids songs running around Youtube

Just by coincidence I was looking at a list of most annoying songs and Baby Shark was on the list:)

Congrats to Dan on his win.

No ts's for me.  I don't think there were too many in this game.

Like so many others, I got FJ from thinking the name sounded Indian.

We had a Viewmaster when I was little, and I loved that thing!  Three for three for me for FJ this week.

Not sad to see Dan go -- he really needs to learn to use his inside voice.  Maybe he wanted to be on Wheel, where being shouty is good.  Also not surprised that he was a one-and-done.

I got mesmerize and Bottom, too.  I think Dan knew Bottom, but just couldn't pull it from his brain.

I got FJ right at the last second. If I was on the show I wouldn't have time to write it.  My sister had one when we were kids.

I got the TS of  mesmerism.

Otherwise, a pretty lackluster game for me.

I said Puck also.  We read Midsummer Night's Dream in 8th grade so it's a bit rusty.

Actually I think the only one I got right in that category was King Lear.

Showing my age but ViewMaster was such an easy question for me! I loved mine and couldn't wait to get new reels! Can you see a kid get excited by such a thing now? 🤣

My friend's son wanted me to watch him play his video game.  I think it was World of Warcraft, but I'm not sure.  Anyway, after I went back out and his mom asked me how it was and I said "it was no Space Invaders."  Then I was trying to imagine today's kids playing Space Invaders. Or Donkey Kong.  It would not go over.

I thought it was refreshing to have a blue-collar worker on the show. Maybe that's happened a lot, but not to my recollection. I was hoping he'd continue as champion.

There's something about E.J. that strikes me as off-putting. Some kind of arrogant veneer.

The only TS I got was mesmerism. I, too, said Puck instead of Bottom. And I was so sure!

Viewmaster occurred to me, but I discounted it for some reason. Then I was thinking of the Kodak Carousel, but it came about in the 60's. (Thanks, Mad Men!)

When EJ's isn't smiling, I think he reminds me of Ronan Farrow. But it might be someone else he's reminding me of.

I have never seen those! Those must have been in the late 40's? Just looked at ebay and it says these were circa 1960? You had to change it everytime you wanted to see another picture? I think I got my first ViewMaster in the early 50's but always had the reels...lots and lots of reels.

Quote

I don’t know what the hellAlex was talking about all of those people were old enough to get a ViewMaster as gift as they we’re still being made until the late 00s.

I know, because my kids had them and they were born in the early '70's. And I showed my son the answer and he knew right away the correct question!!

I guess Alex's kids must not have had one. I'm an 80s kid, and we definitely had one. It was awesome.

Ridiculous that what was essentially "the country between China and Russia" was a $1000 clue. Those horses were pretty, though!

I would’ve gotten mine probably mid to late ‘60’s. Yep, you put the slide in, looked at the picture, took it out, then put the next slide in. None of that fancy spinning reel stuff for me!

I watched with my mother and sister, and we were all just too confused by the wording of the question to get anywhere, but when the answer was revealed, all three of us immediately knew what a ViewMaster was as my sister and I had had one growing up. Then we asked my youngest sister, who is 21, and she also remembered getting one as a kid. This would have been in the early 00s. They may have been around for a long time, but that doesn't mean only people in their 70s+ would remember them! We all loved ours.

I didn't have a Viewmaster; I had a rip-off of one, some cheaper dealio that didn't have the circular reels. It had rectangles you inserted in the top and as you clicked, it moved down, coming out the bottom, so if you wanted to look at it again, you had to re-insert it at the top. It was still pretty cool until I got "carsick" when the pics changed.

I was very uncertain as to my guess of View-Master.  It seemed to fit the first part of the clue (virtual tourism starting in 1939), but I had no idea that they had expanded into virtual reality in 2015.

When I first heard the clue, I guessed either slide projectors or View Masters, then settled on View Master.

I had one when I was little, in the 1950s.  After WWII, when my folks moved back to Kansas from Phoenix, they visited places like Carlsbad Caverns, and bought the reels from some of those places, so tourism made sense to me.

I think Alex's remark made sense - they seemed to fade in popularity as other things like video games became more popular and available.  And really, if you're not around young children/tweens, it's not easy to figure out what they like or what they do for entertainment.

That was exactly my hesitancy with the answer. I got it, but I was by no means sure. I had no idea Viewmaster still existed in any shape or form.

I know!  I remember them as a kid and I'm not THAT old.

Between Bottom and Kit Marlowe, obsessively watching Upstart Crow is really helping on J! lately.  I'm sure I would have gotten those answers anyway but both are characters on the show so they are on my mind. Heh, if Robert Greene or Robert Burbage are future answers, it might be that someone on the writing staff are also watching.
