Jeopardy! Season 35 (2018-2019)

Since there aren't many TSs these days, I've decided to keep track of how many clues I can answer correctly during a game. I doubt I'll make it into double digits. James' range of knowledge is astoundingly vast.

I got a laugh out of his "happy birthday to no one," mainly because I'm no one so I took it as a personal shout out.

I was stumped on FJ. First I thought Moldova, but it's too small. So I went with Siberia, even though I know it's 5 million square miles, not the 10,000 asked for in the clue. But at least it was an answer.

I "knew" glass harmonica but couldn't come up with the name.

I didn't get FJ. I won't tell you my guess. It was bad.

I was frustrated that I couldn't get the exact name of the instrument.  The museum where I worked hosted a wonderful traveling Ben Franklin exhibit several years ago, and the highlight of the opening party for staff and volunteers was a performance on that glass harmonica.

My final guess was Chechnya, but I knew in the back of my mind it was wrong.  I assumed it had to be geographically near enough to Moscow, so I did at least eliminate Siberia.  Does a correct first letter count?

It's a glass Armonica. There's no H in it. I swear, AT said "harmonica" - and that's just plain wrong. Franklin invented it and that's what he named it, regardless of what other languages call it.

I said that, too. Definitely the glass armonica. I've heard one played. They're amazing and eerie. Kind of like a cross between a singing saw and a theremin.

Jaem's big bets make me nervous, but the runaway games do make FJ less exciting.

This was a terrible board for me. I knew some things that I couldn't extract from my brain and/or mouth, but mostly it was crickets. I was sooo close on FJ though. Got the date, got the reference - but said "Ukraine," Crimea having slipped from my mind completely. The mister gave me the side-eye on that, but he didn't get Crimea either - even though I got him more than halfway there.

This was a good FJ for husbands, apparently. I was thinking about that little outpost of Russia that's on the other side of Finland* (which has been part of Russia for longer than 2014, is much smaller, and I couldn't come up with the name anyway beyond "starts with a K"), but my husband said, "Hm,  isn't the answer Crimea?"

*I mean, it's not bordering Finland, it's just separated from Russia and to the west.

YES! I was shouting at the TV when I heard Alex pronounce the "h".

In addition to hearing it in concert, I've visited the Franklin House in London. They have some recorded armonica music playing there.  It truly is angelic!

That was a completely un-fun game. I don't actively hate James, but his mowing down of competitors is not enjoyable. Those two contestants looked so miserable throughout. And I do find a lot of the double jeopardy questions to be easy. While he does have a wide breadth of knowledge, it's not as impressive as Ken Jennings'. He's stayed silent on a few I've gotten, so that's how I know!

I said Siberia too!  I was trying to think of a large place....

That's one of my problems: I don't have a concept of sizes or distances, so I wasn't sure how big 10,000 sq miles was.

I had googled glass harmonica, so since that came up, I just went with it. I'm happy to drop the H. Ave a appy day!

But I do wonder if they would have ruled me correct for "panino" instead of "panini", since panino is the singular (and therefore correct if you are only making or ordering one).

I thought they were asking for the gadget itself, which is a panini press, not a panino press.

This is where I'm at, too. By this point, I'm just not interested in watching him. It's been a long time since Ken, but I swear I don't remember that run being like this (complete domination every game), but someone correct me if I'm wrong. I just loved Ken, though (still do), and was only lukewarm about James from the start.

Probably going to stop tuning in for a bit.

I believe that there were a quite a few games when people came close to at least having a chance to beat Ken.  All the games were not runaways. And, he was very conservative in his betting for most of his run.

So.... happy birthday?

I keep track of my number of correct answers sometimes. It's fun! Although sometimes depressing.

Count me among those who said Siberia.... at first. Then I realized the clue said they moved the clocks forward which would mean it should be somewhere to the west of Moscow, and came up with Crimea just in time

I’m actually enjoying James’ run.  I’m sure it sucks being up against him, but I enjoy his balls-to-the-wall approach, and his range of knowledge is impressive.  I hope he continues for a nice long while.

I like watching him to. I mean the only suspense is how high his daily total will be, but his vast knowledge, and how quickly he gets the answer is amazing. Plus I like his risk taking. Lately it was a big deal to bet more than $5k. I can see how people who like close games are bored but he’s already a legend. I’ll remember him way more than the three-way nailbiters.

I wonder, once he’s done, if others will adopt his riskier style of play.

I know all of y'all will have gotten FJ today as an instaget, but my brain appears not to be working correctly, and I blanked.  I probably didn't pay attention to what the category was.  Yeah, that's the ticket -- I didn't know the category....  Nah, really I got hung up on the Greek part when I probably should have focused on the bird part.

And I am 0/3 so far this week.

One good thing I can say about James's seemingly endless run is that Alex Trebek seems to be tickled pink by it.

Totally agree with this, and given the medical fight Alex is in the midst of I am 100% down with anything that brings him joy.

I chortled aloud when James sang "Better Man" - or, I should say, attempted to sing...because that sounded nothing like the actual song, at all. It was charming, though, as was him looking choked up at the end related to granny and his new record.

I did not get it.  I didn't know what the region was called. Could only think of Athens. So, I tired working backwards by thinking up bird names and never made it to Finch.

I got Plutonium, but I thought it was wrong, because I thought the clue said something about a Greek god, and Pluto is Roman, no?  If they made a mistake on the clue, it would explain why nobody on the show got it.  Or, I could have just forgotten the clue by the time the answer was given because I'm seriously getting senile.

You're probably right. I got it by thinking of birds. It helped that my sister and were talking about finches on Sunday - there was a bird she didn't recognize in her backyard.

I didn't even hear the next question because yeah, the clue said Greek and Pluto is Roman. Hades is Greek.

Attics Finch was an IG.

I think people will definitely start choosing the $1000 clues first.  It does make sense to rack up money before the first DD.  And maybe he’ll inspire larger DD and FJ bets overall - that would be fun.

I just feel so badly for all those people who went through all the channels to go on the show only to come up against this one boy wonder (James).

How disheartening.

At least the woman on the right kind of laughed about it. The one in the middle seemed bummed.

James must have an Achilles’ Heel. He can’t just go on winning forever.

I think I got 2 TS but I'll be damned if I can remember them now!

FJ came to me pretty quickly. Helped that we saw Jeff Daniels as Atticus in "To Kill A Mockingbird" in NYC a few months ago. Highly recommended if you get the chance to see it - he is excellent!

For some inexplicable reason, I thought about FJ for two seconds and yelled "Atticus Finch!".  Stella jumped off my lap in a hurry. She hates when I yell. Bosco, asleep on the chair next to us, wasn't bothered. He's such a laid-back kitty.

How is Miss Stella doing?

I totally misread FJ as 21st century instead of 20th.  I am not saying I would have gotten dear old Atticus but at least I might've had a chance if my eyeballs had behaved better.

Hubby did the same.

He will either burn out, face off against a contestant that is even better than he is (or luckier in uncovering DDs), &/or lose big on a DD or 2. For now Dr. Toothbrush has taken to calling him Watson.
