This was the first time in a long time that I actually started clapping out loud when a tv competition winner was announced. (Scared my cat and everything.) I only started rooting for Kentaro after I saw his collection but I still thought there was no way the judges would give him the win. What a delightful surprise!

I don't have a problem with the fact that Brandon didn't win.  I wonder,  however,  if the judges/producers built him up through the entire season to make him believe that he was going to win just so they could introduce some drama and show how upset he was when he lost. I have a bit of a problem with that.

Wendy Pepper is one of those (like Joe and Bill from the first season of The Amazing Race) who I've seen described as a villain, but it was always a puzzle to me why.  I saw both much later as I caught up on the early seasons of the shows.  People just want villains in shows, even if it's people who are playing by the rules.  Good reality shows though aren't a pantomime, they are more interesting than that.

She's a good narrator, Kentaro was never about to do most of that, he would say that himself.  The judges made it clear from early on that Brandon and Kentaro were the ones they liked the most, so any other result than that would have been a surprise.

I disagree that her fabrics were bad. I think some of those fabrics would have been lovely used differently. That shiny pewter grey would make a lovely flow-y skirt or dress. With proper draping, it would move like liquid metal. It was totally the wrong fabric for a structured tunic, and a structured tunic was the wrong use of the fabric, as was the 2nd look that used it: the straight skirt. The fabric reminded me of the bias cut gowns worn by starlets in 1930's movies, especially B&W ones where the shimmer helped give definition to the fabric movement.

The greenish print that she used several times had the same issue... totally wrong fabric and weight for how she used it, but could be lovely used differently. But then I hated most of the overly ruffled looks anyway, so nothing could have redeemed them. The fabric choices just made them even more meh.

I mostly muted the finale, due to Margarita's jaw flapping every time I glanced up. So I did not hear all that much...just un-muted once she was eliminated.

Sigh. I don't want to get too off topic, but these broad generalizations are really hurtful and offensive. I don't disagree that gender discrimination and misogyny are systemic issues that need to be addressed - but they're not unique to Islam (just look at our country), nor do they define Islam (Ayana herself is a perfect example). Anyway, I wish Ayana the best and hope she thrives in spite of biases like these.

This finale was such a pleasant surprise! Kentaro, Ayana and Brandon were my three favorites, and I would have been happy with any of them winning, but the editing on the show – not just the finale but over the course of the season – really was NOT pointing to a Kentaro win. I feel like the judges were pretty lukewarm to him (often under-praising him IMO), even when talking about his winning collection. So, even though I didn’t absolutely LOVE Kentaro’s final collection, it felt like a just outcome (although Ayana’s clothes would have been a better fit for JC Penney).

Aside from the unpredictability, this was a great finale because all the collections were decent and reflected unique points of view. I also liked all the finalists (Kentaro and Ayana are absolutely delightful, Brandon has his charm, and Margarita didn’t bug me).

I’ll admit, I felt awful watching Brandon cry. I do think he’s a very talented designer, and actually liked a lot of his runway looks; the problem, as the judges pointed out, is that they were far too repetitive for a collection. The only ones I can remember are the ones worn by Liris and the one with the backpack that he showed the judges in the penultimate episode. By contrast, I think the other contestants had a number of standout looks.

I’ll echo the praise for Meisha throughout this season. My favorite model, though, was Marsha, the tall black model with the short fro (she wore the long striped coat with shorts in Margarita’s collection). She was so striking and had such poise – still don’t understand why they decided to “eliminate” her. And as annoying as she is, Liris does have a banging body and great walk. I almost feel like Jazmin (Margarita’s model with the big sarong moment) is the flip side of Liris – wonderful attitude, but not as modelesque and kind of awkward walk.

I never said it was unique to or defined Islam. I also never wished her the worst nor wished her to fail. I believe I said I thought they would all do well in their fashion careers.

I thought Kentaro's show was very theatrical. The fashions were artistic. The lighting was dramatic. The music was moody. The whole package just worked very well for me. One of the judges said that a mark of a truly good runway show is when people are very quiet throughout, and Kentaro's show achieved that standard. I did not expect him to win. But I thought he should win, and I'm glad he did.

Kentaro's interview in Entertainment Weekly.  Overall, it's a scream.  Kentaro weighs in on Brandon as well as the Twins (he liked them as people).  He said he saw several people go home with tape measures around their necks.  He felt that women can look at their clothes at the apartment but men can't so maybe everyone should be naked.  Best observation:  When he found out the winner got a trip to Japan, he said he preferred a trip to the Grand Canyon.

This exactly!!!   That dress was gorgeous, a work of art, no doubt.  But I think that some of the appeal of the dress is in how Miesha wore it as she came down the runway.  She nailed it.  I found myself wishing that they could award a special prize for the top outfit of the show, apart from the winner.  And she was a real doll.  I don't remember her being as negative about the designers as some of the other models (Liris, I'm looking at you!)  and she seemed to be a sweet girl.  I hope she goes far.  As for the winner, if it couldn't be Ayana, I'm glad it was Kentaro.  I didn't like some of his stuff, but overall I think he had a solid collection, and he also seemed to be a sweet guy.  As far as Brandon went, I felt really awful for him when reality set in and he realized that he wasn't the judges' favorite anymore.  Those tears were real and came from his heart.  I'm glad his family was there to help him up from that huge disappointment.  Margarita?  I'm glad her family was okay, and that she got to show, but yeah, she deserved fourth place.

I particularly disliked her gratuitous and condescending big moment of the swimsuit reveal.  There have been fashion week runway shows featuring plus size models wearing lingerie and swimsuits for at least a couple of years now.  Perhaps Nina Garcia was so impressed  that she was moved to stand and applaud because those are shows she has not bothered to attend.  But, yeah, overall I also felt Margarita's collection to be too costumey.  The prints were overused and some of the designs were straight up staffwear at a tropically themed casino.  The red fringes....ugh!   Her collection could have used some serious reining in.

I am now watching the episode and have read no posts (don't want to be spoiled). So I may repeat something that 100 others have already said.

Brandon sleeping makes me think of when Chris March snoozed - I think it was Fashion Week, too. I like the colors and brightness of Margarita's collection. I'm glad she's just going to own it, besides, what else can she do now?

Kentaro walks into the sewing room and says, "Brother", so I wonder is he a) talking to Brandon or b) doing a plug for the Brothers sewing machines. (a)!

I actually think Margarita's collection is the best for JC Penney.  Gosh, Brandon is sewing his own labels into the garments, too! At least Tim didn't tell them they were the most talented group of designers ever on the show. But I do think this group is in the upper half, not as good as 4, 5, 7, but better than many of the more recent seasons.

I really like Margarita's collection. It was so fun to watch and you're wondering what's next. Brandon's, I guess, is good, but there is one that was like a nightie and another like the thing that they put over you at the dentist or maybe when you're getting an x-ray. I thought Ayana's was just lovely. That last dress brought tears to my eyes. Meisha looked so beautiful. (And Heidi agrees!)

And we get a little plug for Heidi's line by Zac.

That was a good runway show. Brandon's fell kind of flat compared to the others. Nina says how Kentaro put together a good runway show and it was Margarita who figured out the order for him. Nina is emotional talking about Ayana. I have to say any of these four would have won the last two seasons over Erin and Ashley. Go Ayana! Now that Brandon didn't get this, maybe she will win!! Well, Brandon can definitely come back for All-Stars!

I'm happy for Kentaro, but I really wanted Ayana to win. But I think she'll have a lot of doors opening for her. Poor Kentaro's dad, falling off the runway! I wonder how JC Penney will redo Kentaro's collection.

Soooo glad Kentaro won!  He deserved it. And his parents were absolutely adorable. 

Ayana seems like a lovely person, and I did like the finale dress, but otherwise yuck - so many dowdy mud-colored frocks. I was going to be pissed if she won.  

Margarita's was gaudy, but otherwise, whatever. She wasn't going to win.  Glad her family is okay. 

I like Brandon, and while I wouldn't wear his stuff (I couldn't pull it off even if I wanted to...) I do like some of it, and I like that it's distinct.  But yeesh, that collection was a snooze.  I could hardly tell most of them apart.  I thought his comment about what real designers do, w 60 looks, revealed the problem. He just wanted to jump forward to that, but in doing so he kind of missed the 10-look challenge at hand.  Oh well, he'll do well.  He would have with or without this show.

IIRC, Chris had been eliminated.  Then, unexpectedly, one of the survivors left or had to leave, and they brought Chris back.  He probably had not caught back up on his missed sleep, his one night of 'normal' and during the next challenge he took a nap.  This was quite a bit before the finale, IF I remember this correctly.

My husband who doesn't know fashion even if you hit him with it thought Kentaro's collection was "fashion". He said Kentaro's was the only one that he would associate with a fashion show. His meaning is -- fashion on a runway show is not street-ready or wearable and Kentaro's achieved that. It is conceptual only. He didn't like the other collections much -- Margarita was too gaudy, Brandon's flamingos were weird and Ayana's was odd except the gray pants/jackets and the final wedding (?) dress. That was my DH's POV. 

I personally always like Kentaro so I was glad he won and I thought his collection was the best.

I’m glad Kentaro won. I loved Ayana’s final dress, but I thought her first three looks were terrible. I found Brandon’s looks boring — it’s the same thing we’ve been seeing all season. As for Margarita’s looks, most of them seemed like things you can buy off the rack at “upscale” boutiques all over south Florida.

As much as I enjoy watching the show, I think it’s time to pull the plug. If the best sponsor the show can get is JCPenney, well ... they sell reasonably priced clothing for regular people. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s not fashion. I’ll eat my hat if either Heidi Klum or Nina Garcia has stepped foot in a JCPenney store other than in connection with a product-placement challenge on this show, let alone have any JCPenney clothing in their closets.

For some reason I was very glad Brandon didn't win.  I can't stand it when the designers get so cocky that they feel their collection is already runway ready when everyone else is making finishing touches.  Plus, I thought his collection was B-O-R-I-N-G!!!  I can't understand why Tim criticized Kenya's collection for having a bland color scheme when all of Brandon's was the exact same color and print.  I felt he always got a pass even though all of his designs looked the same to me.  Maybe it looked different in person because I just didn't see what any of the judges were seeing. 

I was really hoping Ayana would win.  I knew she wouldn't though when the judges said they didn't like her first three outfits.  I knew it would be between Brandon and Kentaro.  I also knew it wouldn't be Margarita even if she did have the one and only "Big Wow" in the whole runway show.  She should have followed the judges critique and not sent Carmen Miranda's closet down the runway.  They told her they didn't want that.  They wanted New York, not Miami.  I guess I'm okay with Kentaro winning even though Tim said he looked like he had about 3 or 4 different looks in his collection.  I guess they don't have to always be cohesive.  That was his whole theme, non cohesiveness, and he won!  Go figure.

Among our celebrities, Kanye West has worn the kind of clothes Brandon makes (replete with straitjacket straps), followed by Justin Bieber, followed by Ariana Grande (for her second album performances--the first was Lolita prostitot aesthetic). So he definitely has a market.

I don't really think this is true.  How in the world could she have predicted how catastrophic the hurricane would be, or how the federal government would completely drop the ball a la New Orleans post-Katrina?  In fact, when she dedicated her line to Puerto Rico, the crowd didn't even respond.  It wasn't this big story until later.  

I know she's greatly disliked, but worrying about your island, your home, your family, doesn't seem hate-worthy.

One area where I think Ayana really fell down was in dressing the plus-sized models. IMO, Marguerita- who I wasn't a huge fan of otherwise- did a much, much better job of dressing their curves. Ayana chose that shiny fabric for a lot of her pieces, and it showed every lump and bump. I did really like her finale piece, but her opening piece was so bad that it almost canceled it out. 

Brandon had a similar problem, with his shapes being incredibly unflattering to the model figures- plus the fabric he used looked like old sheets that had been through the wash too many times. Absolutely the worst color pallet to use in a runway show, because the overhead lights washes it out even further. 

I was thrilled to see Kentaro win. I really didn't think he had a chance after the preview, but he managed to rearrange his collection to make it progressive in a way that felt cohesive.

Thanks for the link to the interview! Kentaro seems like such a sweet and positive person. I liked his answer to this question (regarding his friendship with Brandon):

"Are you guys still close?
Yes, we are friends. I talk to him. … I wanted to have designer friends at the show; it’s good to have someone I can trust."

So refreshing from the usual, "I'm not here to make friends" comment you often hear from reality show contestants. I hope they stay friends!

Just looked at the JC Penny versions of his looks. Sadly, they seemed to have lost something in translation, especially the red top - it didn't even look close to being the right shade of red. And where did that black pleather cami even come from? I'm surprised they didn't create a version of one of his white & black looks - there were a couple that I wish I could wear!

Watching Kentaro's collection, accompanied by his music, was like watching a Japanese ghost story. It gave me the same sort of dissociative and unsettled feeling that I get when I see Japanese horror films. Not something I expected to experience during a Project Runway finale.

 

I will never forget watching that runway show. I am so glad that it was appreciated by the judges too, and that they awarded him the win.

Plus, the finale was taped during the first hurricane to hit the island (Irma), which caused a lot of flooding and damages to PR, but not even close to the catastrophe of Hurricane Maria, which arrived a week later.

I noticed early on in the episode that there seemed to be a definite Ayana edit (even if it was just her making a huge deal about Brandon's five minute nap), so I was surprised she didn't win.  Margarita's collection was horrible--boring silhouettes and gaudy prints, too little design, she was an obvious 4th place.   Brandon's certainly won for cohesion, but the standout pieces were definitely the ones where he didn't use that print from head to toe; it was disappointing.  Kentaro's first look coming down the runway was a knockout, and his whole collection had a quiet beauty to it, but I grew tired of all the plunging v-necks and bland hair/makeup.  I wasn't a fan of Ayana's finale wedding dress--I found it prosaic, and wasn't a huge fan of the rest of her collection either.  I'm really glad Kentaro won, even though it was completely unexpected.

Kentaro and Ayana were my top two through most of the season, so I'm happy with the results. I had a feeling when everyone went dead quiet during Kentaro's runway show that he was going to win. He put on a real show!

Brandon was the opposite. Each piece was cool, but he did not put on any kind of show. I thought his comments in response to the judges' criticism were interesting--he was seeing himself in the context of a big professional designer's runway show. But Nina was right: When you have only a 10-piece collection, you have to think of it differently. I kept waiting all season for the judges to turn on Brandon and tell him his work was getting repetitive.  It's too bad for him that they waited until the finale! But he should have known a show needs some drama and wow pieces.

Ayana had an amazing wow piece, but some of hers was pretty boring. I think she should have gone all the way with the head pieces and used them throughout the whole collection. The looks with the beautiful hijab are the ones that stood out most to me.  I believe she would have won if she had gone all in on that theme and really played it up more. 

I don't think Margarita really belonged in the finale, but the fact that she did her own prints was cool, especially the giant fish. I felt bad for her having to worry about the hurricane back home on top of the stress of fashion week. I live in New Orleans, and when a hurricane is on its way, it really is impossible to think about anything else.

I was so confused about the big reaction when Margarita's model took off her wrap skirt. I kept thinking "Isn't it fairly common for a model to take off an article of clothing on the runway? What's the big deal?!" It wasn't until hearing the critiques that I finally figured out it was because--gasp!--a model who is not a size 2 is showing her body! 

That being said, I liked the the greater variety of body types this season and enjoyed Liris. She deserved a more dramatic outfit for the runway.

I did the same thing! I was so happy Kentaro won.

I saw his win coming when they repeatedly showed him saying he knew he wasn’t going to win so he was just going to do what he wanted, etc. From right out of the gate the editors really played up his humble underdog in contrast to overly confident Brandon (I’ll just be over here sewing my name labels into my garments while you all are frantically trying to get actual important stuff done) as well as Ayana. I thought she also came across as overly confident in a couple of her THs and even seemed surprised at the end when she didn’t win.

I will never ever ever understand how Margarita made it as far as she did. Her garments looked tacky, unsophisticated and cheap. She was nowhere near the other three designers in taste. I love color - and was disappointed the other three collections didn’t have more of it - but her collection was a hot mess. It did not rise to the level of ‘fashion’ and it was obvious (to me) the judges were working hard to come up with flattering comments. (So let’s talk some more about when her model whipped off her swimsuit wrap. What a moment!)

Heidi Klum. Questionable taste in her own clothing for sure.. but man she has one bangin’ bod for a 44 year-old mother of four.

I felt the same way.  I'm fairly literal so when designers, especially on PR talk about their collections telling a story, I never quite get it.  This time I did because everything added to the odd, compelling quality of the presentation.  The music set the stage and the fashion weirdly played off it.  Even the initial silhouette behind the screen of the tulle dress made you want to see more.  After all the monochrome, you suddenly see the blood red and it's a shock.  His final look has the feel of finality.  I thought it was wonderful, intriguing.

Although some have complained, I think this was the best finale and season from PR in years.  All four designers had very distinct viewpoints and all were well executed.

JCP has a red top based on Kentaros collection in fluffy girl sizing...I am going to buy it...I'm in Canada but headed to Florida next week.  Poor Brandon, I wish Tim had heavily criticized him last week...so he got the hint.  The season long tongue bathing by the judges didn't help.  Ayana should stick to couture...her dress was amazing.  I love out there designs & loved Kentaro.  He didn't come across as nasty...he had opinions on others but was usually proved right.

I don't care if people like how her face looks when she's serious (seems shallow to me).  And she obviously belonged in the final as she was in it whether some like that or not.

I suppose the opposite is how we had to hear week after week how 'charming' Brandon looked and how people liked his smile or whatever, blah blah.

How was she supposed to look when a strong hurricane bigger than the island itself was threatening to make its way across there and she didn't know if her parents could get out?  Irma had the potential to do what Maria ended up doing. People with family on those islands were all walking around looking like that and still are, in some cases.

I wrote in another thread that I didn't think Kentaro would win. I actually didn't give the judges enough credit, based on their choosing Gretchen a few years ago. I thought they would consider it too sophisticated and artistic and conceptual. I am almost suspicious as to why they chose him.

If anything, Brandon's sleeping during the finale was similar to Jeffrey Sebelia who was completely finished with his collection when he brought it to NY.  So much so that he was outside smoking when everyone else was working and it caused Laura to accuse him of cheating by outsourcing his work.

Is there any significance to Tim not congratulating Kentaro on the win? Because I really thought he believed Kenya deserved to stay after the preview runway and seemed outraged that Kentaro stayed.

Kentaro said in the EW interview that Tim didn't like his work so I also thought it was interesting that we saw so little of Tim congratulation him while watching the runway show.  I think we can pretty much guarantee to hear Tim saying that Kentaro is a worse winner than Ashley.

I saw these photos of Ayana's collection and while she used a lot of plus size models, her fashions made her models look heavy.  There was an excess of fabric and design that was less about modesty.

So who was The Winning Model? The blonde woman with the Eastern European accent?

Yes, if the model has a protruding tummy, a shiny fabric is going to draw attention to that pooch when the light reflects off it. Ayana chose some pretty unattractive fabrics. I liked the fabric in the first look above and the fabric in the fourth look.

Agree with everything you said. I hadn’t picked up on Tim not being crazy about Kentaro’s work earlier in the competition but it seemed like Tim was pretty irritated when Kentaro pushed back on Tim’s critique during the home visit on how K’s collection was not cohesive. When Tim was trying to explain the issue to him, didn’t Kentaro say something to the effect of ‘but I don’t want people to be bored [when they look at my collection]?’ (I wasn’t sure K ever truly understood completely what Tim and the judges meant by ‘cohesion.’ When K added that dress he made at the last minute which he thought would add the ‘cohesion’ the judges were looking for, it ended up being criticized as the weakest garment in his collection..)

Anyway, maybe the combination of Tim’s (1) disappointment that Kenya was eliminated instead of Kentaro, (2) soft spot for Margarita, (3) confusion/shock/non-appreciation for Kentaro’s dead cat inspiration for his somber music and (4) K’s open disagreement with Tim on striving for deliberate cohesion - made it hard for Tim to show much enthusiasm for K’s win. I think Tim and a lot of (most?) others thought it was obvious K was going to be vying with Margarita for 3rd or 4th place behind Brandon and Ayana. And then the judges ended up loving the very things about Kentaro’s collection Tim didn’t- the non-cohesiveness, the eerie music, etc. and not showing anywhere the near same love for Margarita’s collection that Tim did..

This season it seemed like there were more instances of Tim being  out of tune with the judges and as a result giving some of the designers bad advice that backfired on them. So not as helpful a mentor as in the past. Kentaro rejected most of Tim’s advice at the end and followed his own instincts with his collection, and in so doing ended up sneaking up from behind and out shining the two established favorites as well as Tim’s pet Margarita. Kentaro showed that yet again- and this time when it counted most-Tim was out of sync with the judges on K’s unexpected appeal. Tim just didn’t get Kentaro.

I think by the end Tim was disgusted by how it all panned out so no big congratulatory hugs for Kentaro. Tim was probably more focused on consoling Margarita (and maybe poor weepy devastated Brandon..). I’m curious to see what public statements Tim will make (or has he already?) about the outcome of this season. Surely he won’t slam sweet Kentaro as much as he did Ashley since even if Kentaro wasn’t his favorite, at least he was/is is obviously more talented than her..? 

I cant wait for the reunion. Let the mob attack on the Indeed Sisters commence!
