Further, and I'll try and keep my legit temper in check, she hasn't worked with winter textiles. Maybe if your instinct is to eye-roll and get super nasty super fast about someone who does come from a literal, objective reality, endless summer climate...you should ask yourself why. Because she wasn't lying. My Puerto Rican mom and all of that side of my family think "winter" is under 70 degrees if and when they move to the mainland. Anyway. Loved Kentaro's. Love Kenya, but not all of her elements. Margarita's dress was pure Muppet, Brandon should have refined the hems. Ayana's fabrics and styling looked cheapitty cheap cheap. All that written, I am glad all 5 are showing something next week. That's the cool thing -- we don't have to question why we have the reactions we have. We just have them, and that's OK. This board is for discussion and snarking, and Maragrita brings plenty of both on herself with her own eye-rolling and super nastiness. If she put half of that (negative) energy into designing, she might be more successful. Just IMO. No one said she was lying, but Margarita knows what "cold" means. Puerto Rico does not exist in a vacuum and neither does Margarita. She went to fashion school (!!!) in RI. She's seen movies. She's been to fabric stores, fashion shows, etc. She knew enough to pick fur!! (My stepmother, step-sister, etc are Puerto Rican -- they are not totally oblivious to Winter.) Margarita's dress was fugly and tacky because she made fugly and tacky clothes, not because she's from Puerto Rico. There are plenty of designers who come on the show from x and/or have never done x or worked with x. She is not unique or special. I liked Kenya's coat, but when they were in Mood, she had her hands on a multi-color slightly-abstract Chevron (wool?) fabric that I thought was fantastic. I was hoping she'd get that! I want to get it and make something, lol. I loved Brandon's and Kentaro's. Slight issues with both, but loved and would wear both. Ayana's was close but it didn't quite hit the mark. I liked the coat well enough, but the jumpsuit was a little to clownish. She was on the right track, though. I like these 3 and will be happy if they are top 3, but I'm truly excited to see all the collections and let the best win. Edited November 3, 2017 by Scorpiosunshine 31 Link to comment

Mondo's speech wasn't self-pitying at all. They designed an outfit using a print they created that was supposed to represent them in some way. He didn't even tell them what the plus sign meant, but the judges loved the print and the whole look, and kept pushing him for the story behind it, so he told them. Not only that, but I thought there was a remarkable lack of self-pity in the speech; nothing maudlin or woe-is-me to it, and there was no crying a la Kenya. He simply told his story, said it was freeing, and that was that. 54 Link to comment

I didn't love Ayana's but that's a matter of taste. She's very talented and she's super creative with prints and colour. I wish both Kentaro and Brandon used more colour but it's almost like they're designing colour-blind -- they're men, after all (LOL!) -- so obviously there's a huuuuuuuge market for that. Most people only want to dress in neutrals and are too afraid not to. Everyone I know wears a black winter coat and it bores me to tears! They look like they're setting up a Margarita win. I think the same thing...and if she wins I will never watch this show again. I've had my share of disappointments with winners, but this woman has zero taste level. Zero. Her ideas suck. Last week "she found herself as a designer" with a Wonder Woman rip off. This week, she made her model look like a cave woman in that horrid faux fur dress that was anything but editorial. She's also so annoying. I thought once the twins left she'd stop, but it wasn't the twins, it's just her. Ugh. When they were in the back while the judges were making their decision and she was whining about how no one picked her and the only people that believed in her were Tim (why, Tim, why???) and herself, I thought -- that's because you aren't good at this. And, again folks...this show presents challenges. I don't care if you've never lived where it's cold, never designed for someone plus size, never worked with unconventional materials, etc. They are CHALLENGES. They are meant to be difficult. I like Brandon, Kentaro and Ayana. I haven't always loved what they've created, but they have points of view. Ayana has really pushed herself. I couldn't wear a think Brandon has made, but his ideas make me smile, straps and all. Kentaro too -- when he is on, his garments are so interesting. Kenya can make some extremely wearable garments, but the aren't fashion forward. Margarita has no design sense. She should go the route of Anya and just make flowy dresses and STFU. Any time she declares how brilliant she is the judges shut her down, which is just about every week. I don't know how she got this far. 25 Link to comment

Kit Kat November 3, 2017 Share November 3, 2017 I have missed challenges like this. Simple. Straightforward. "It's cold. Make a winter look." or "Here's New York. Use it as your inspiration." or "Here's a storage unit full of crap. Make something." or "Here are a group of Drag Queens. Make them an outfit." I can't STAND what the show has become. "We're taking you on a King Kong ride at Universal and we want you to make a look inspired by King Kong." What? Or "Here's this obscure kids' movie about dance. Watch fifteen minutes of it and then make a outfit inspired by movement." (That challenge still confused the hell out of me.) I own seasons 1-8 on DVD and own many more episodes through Amazon and the way this show has fallen, it's almost upsetting and it shows to me that I have way TOO much invested in it. But tonight's challenge. I got on board immediately. And ugh, Margarita. You're just not a good person. 12 Link to comment

Popular Post ElectricBoogaloo November 3, 2017 Popular Post Share November 3, 2017 (edited) Even though Margarita has been a pill of late, I still felt bad for her when she was told she wasn't allowed to buy fur when she was at the cash register. That sucks. And great that Tim gave her five extra minutes to run back to the faux fur section to try to find something similar, but as she said in her talking head, if she had known before then, she would have made different choices about her design. She specifically said she chose that rabbit fur to give her design an expensive luxe feel, and substituting faux fur does not achieve that. To me, that's the kind of element that affects your design. It's like getting to the cash register at mood and being told, "Oh, you can't use [insert any specific color here], but I'll give you five minutes to get some other fabric that goes with the rest of your materials." What she ended up creating was terrible. An entire dress made of faux fur? That was like the laziest version of a Burning Man costume. I'm just going to wrap this piece of faux fur around the body and add a belt to cinch in the waist. Seriously, that was horrible. I liked the lines of her jacket, but doing it in that ivory color made it look like a bathrobe. If she had chosen just about any other color, it would have looked so much better (and more like an actual coat). I agreed with Tim when he said the painting/pattern that Ayana was planning to do looked very childish. But I thought the paint splattering he encouraged her to do instead was very 80s. I hated the jumpsuit. It wasn't flattering and it looked messy. I also did not like the way it looked with casual flat white shoes and the black/pink jacket. She looked like a mom who threw on a coat over her pajamas to drive her kid to school. I liked Kentaro's look even though it was impractical. I don't know why the judges were so enthused about the leg things he made though. They're called legwarmers. They've been around for decades. Last week or the week before, I mentioned that Kenya is not very good at expressing herself to the judges on the freeway. This week was no different. Instead of giving a coherent reason as to why she should go to fashion week (a question that EVERY designer knows will be asked), she broke down into a snotty mess of how broke she is and how much she has sacrificed. Look, I like Kenya, and I think she just gets really nervous around the judges (she seems so much better at communicating when she's talking to other designers in the workroom and in her talking heads), but I was just shaking my head the entire time. Girl, this is not a need based scholarship. This is (allegedly) a merit based competition. It doesn't matter if you're broke. What matters is convincing the judges that you have the talent, skill, and creativity to show them an interesting collection. Everyone else was such a bunch of ass kissers for naming Brandon as one of the finalists. They all knew he was going to be in the finale so they wanted the judges to think they see his "talent" too, even the people who have been bitching about him all season. I laughed my ass off when Ayana said he never knows what to expect from him. Really? Because I know exactly what to expect from him every week: an unstructured crop top and a shitload of straps hanging everywhere. When Heidi pointed out that Brandon put his model in strappy high heels, I had a rare moment of agreeing with her. When they zoomed in on the model's shoes, all I could see was that the leggings were totally uneven. One side was at least an inch shorter than the other. Whether it was deliberate or accidental, it looked stupid. Edited November 3, 2017 by ElectricBoogaloo 26 Link to comment

I've always explained it thus to the truly vegan crowd - the reason most people don't have trouble with leather is: We have a dairy industry. Half the cattle born are male, and of no use for the dairy industry. So therefore, we have a beef industry. The hides of beef cattle are a by-product of the beef industry. So, not many dairy or beef consumers have a problem with using the by-products of these two lucrative industries. So, I tell my vegan friends, (who naturally oppose these industries) that only through total veganism will stop the use of leather. But most people oppose fur because it's not the thrifty use of a by-product. It's killing for one part of an animal, wasteful, and often cruel, therefore most people find it distasteful. To me either it's killing all animals is bad or it's not. I'm a meat-eater, but meat is not necessary to sustain human life just like fur isn't. There's no justification for leather vs fur. Chris Rock once pondered why Michael Vick was in jail while Sarah Palin was sniping wolves from helicopters. I thought three were going to fashion week, so I would have picked Brandon, Kentaro and Ayana. If I had to choose a fourth, it's hard to say. Although Margarita is very hit or miss, I think she makes more interesting clothes than Kenya. Kenya's strong suit is that her clothes are wearable and well-made, but may not be as high fashion. I probably would go with Margarita. 3 Link to comment

Hers is likely the only collection they could mass produce for a JC Penney style customer. Brandon may not pull this off... This is a perfect explanation for why this show has deteriorated and will continue to. 5 Link to comment
Cindyluwho November 3, 2017 Share November 3, 2017 I blame Lirus for doing a great job selling that Muppet dress to the judges. 11 Link to comment
amazingracefan November 3, 2017 Share November 3, 2017 (edited) I haven't liked Kentaro now for 3 weeks in a row and this week they gave him a win! Even if he technically completes what he is doing to a good standard I don't think he has been that inventive or interesting for a while. Ayana had a pretty boring dress, but they magically forgot about that rather quickly. I also thought that the coat of Kenya didn't really go with what was underneath, and there wasn't really anything that interesting. Brandon's top was probably the best part for me, but I'm tired of hearing all the praise for him, he still keeps within a narrow style. We're all supposed to find him charming apparently but he comes across as quite smug now. Margarita didn't completely finish but had something more for the runway than some others there. Not interesting reading the hate for Margarita so I haven't. I also don't understand why they asked the designers who should go with them, they'll pick their friends. And as all season we had to hear the models' opinion all the way through as well. Edited November 3, 2017 by amazingracefan 3 Link to comment
Bebecat November 3, 2017 Share November 3, 2017 Wish we knew how models were assigned. I like being able to comment throughout show. So many things come up...:) Seems like since M was going to be "saved" from her own bad taste again, they went ahead and showed her at her worst. Maybe the producers don't much like her lol. She came off as extremely childish, ungracious, and just plain unlikable, IMO. Also I just can't see going for real fur these days, rules or not. It is the next best thing to forbidden in fashion. A fake fur coat can be cute if made by a talented designer. Even a fake fur collar. Her coat was nothing. Judges stressed "fashion" and praised this most basic, bland piece. She was lucky fur wasn't allowed and she was forced to make the coat, but no one made her do that hideous dress. 7 Link to comment
